11 best infloor electric heats
In-floor electric heating systems are a modern and efficient way to provide warmth and comfort to indoor spaces. These systems are typically installed beneath the flooring and are commonly used in residential and commercial buildings. Here's what you need to know about in-floor electric heating:
Installation: In-floor electric heating systems consist of heating cables or mats that are installed beneath the floor covering, such as tile, laminate, or hardwood. They can be installed during new construction or as a retrofit in existing buildings.
Types:
- Radiant Floor Heating: This is the most common type of in-floor electric heating. It consists of electric heating cables or mats that are embedded in a layer of thinset or self-leveling mortar beneath the flooring material. These systems radiate heat upward, warming the floor and the room.
- Electric Underfloor Heating Mats: These mats are pre-fabricated with heating elements and can be rolled out and secured to the subfloor. They are particularly convenient for installation in larger areas.
Operation: In-floor electric heating systems operate by using electrical resistance to generate heat. When the system is turned on, the heating elements warm up, transferring heat to the floor covering above. The heat then radiates into the room, providing even and comfortable warmth.
Thermostats: To control the temperature and energy usage of in-floor electric heating systems, thermostats are used. These thermostats allow users to set desired temperatures and schedule heating cycles, ensuring efficient operation.
Advantages:
- Even Heating: In-floor heating provides even and consistent warmth across the entire floor surface, eliminating cold spots.
- Energy Efficiency: These systems can be energy-efficient when used with programmable thermostats to heat rooms only when needed.
- Silent Operation: In-floor electric heating operates silently, without the noise associated with some forced-air heating systems.
Applications: In-floor electric heating is commonly used in:
- Bathrooms: It provides warmth to cold bathroom floors and is a popular choice for this space.
- Kitchens: Many homeowners opt for in-floor heating in kitchens for added comfort.
- Living Rooms and Bedrooms: It can be installed in any room where comfort and warmth underfoot are desired.
- Commercial Spaces: These systems are also used in commercial buildings, such as restaurants, hotels, and retail stores.
Maintenance: In-floor electric heating systems are generally low maintenance. They have a long lifespan and do not require routine maintenance or filter changes like some other heating systems.
Cost: The cost of installing in-floor electric heating can vary depending on factors like the size of the space, the type of system chosen, and installation complexity. It's important to consider both the upfront installation cost and long-term energy savings.
In-floor electric heating systems offer an efficient and comfortable heating solution for indoor spaces. They are particularly popular in areas with cold winters, providing a cozy and inviting environment while reducing the reliance on traditional heating methods.

User questions & answers
Question: | How do you secure the wire |
Answer: | The heating wire can be secured to a subfloor with the cable guides (metal strap on a picture). Or with hot glue, or hvac tape (aluminum foil tape) - these are not included in a kit. |
Question: | There are two different pictures shown for the thermostat controller. Which one comes with the product |
Answer: | From what I can see in the pics, the 3rd picture just shows the thermostat with the 2 side covers, which hide the settings buttons, open. We have this system at home and the thermostat is as it appears in the pictures. The sides do open and close to reveal the buttons. Hope that helps! |
Question: | Can you add more wire to increase the square footage? Or does that controller only cover 30 square feet |
Answer: | The maximum combined load per one thermostat is 15.0 Amps. This allows to control up to 150sqft (1,800 Watts) per thermostat using 120V heating system, or up to 300sqft (3,600 Watts) per thermostat using 240V heating system. 30sqft, 120V cable has 3 Amps load. You can add up to 12 Amps or 120sqft, 120V. Multiple cables must be wired to the thermostat in parallel. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be used under laminate flooring that has the foam backing |
Answer: | No only tile ! |
Question: | Can you install this product underneath of linoleum |
Answer: | Hello, with the wide range of Linoleum available on the market today I'd be hesitant to answer this without the Linoleum manufacturer's recommendation. My suggestion would be to talk to your Linoleum supplier and find out what they say about having floor heating under their product, also make sure the glue is compatible with radiant floor heating. |
Question: | hi, can you set a timer for it to come on early..like an hour before you usually wake up so that its nice and toasty |
Answer: | Yes, it comes with a programmable thermostat and you can set different times for different days of week, and you can program twice a day - so maybe a 3 hour chunk in the morning and other chunk at night. |
Question: | I want to install this under a granite island counter top do you think this is possible |
Answer: | Certainly possible, I am just not sure how well it will work thru that thickness of that stone. I have heard from others that their floor heater gets too hot to use. Mine is set to 76 and it is not hot, just very comfortable to walk on during the cold ohio weather. I have not cranked it up to the high setting which I think is 82. I would think if your granite supplier is familiar with this and say it works, I would have no hesitation that this unit could not do the job. |
Question: | Can this product be installed directly on concrete |
Answer: | I installed mine directly to the concrete slab and poured a self leveling compound over the top. It works just fine. I think the larger concrete slab acts as a giant heat sink and maybe doesn’t get as warm as it might otherwise and/or takes a little longer to heat up. That said, it works great and gets plenty warm where we actually laid it... in front of the sinks and in front of the shower. If you step off that area you can tell an immediate difference and I wish we’d put down a little more than we did. |
Question: | Can the mat be cut to fit the space |
Answer: | Sure, cut mesh and reposition the heating wire the way you need. http://www.heattechproducts.com/how-to-install-radiant-floor-heating-mats |

Question: | I need a 25sqft and a 20sqft. Do you have any 20 sqft systems? 120 volt similar to the 25 sqft system you have here |
Answer: | 2.25" maximum; a little less if it's a thick belt. (The other answer here of 2.5" is a bit off -- it was probably a measurement of the outside rather than inside of the loop. See photo in my review with ruler.) |
Question: | Can the end of the heating wire be cut if I don't need all of it |
Answer: | No. It works with 1/2 inch pvc/pipe thread |

Floor Heating Cable
The Electric Floor Heating Cable consists of a spool of heating cable. Simply run the cable 3" apart across the area to heat using the cable guides to secure to the floor running the cold lead up the wall to the electrical box. These heating systems are ideal for odd shaped areas or to heat around objects. The RED HEATING ELEMENT CAN NOT BE CUT, so be sure to accurately measure the space you are heating.
Programmable Thermostat with Sensor
Honeywell / Aube model # TH115-AF-120S
The programmable floor sensing thermostat and floor sensor is designed to work with electric floor heating systems. It gives you the ability to accurately control the floor temperature for maximum comfort and energy savings. The thermostat features high-tech precision with straight forward, user friendly interface and contemporary design with backlit display. This floor sensing thermostat is digital, programmable, and includes the floor sensor. The thermostat is factory pre-programmed with a 7 day schedule that can be adjusted. This thermostat is 120 volt, rated for 16 amps, easily switching between F and C temperature scales.
THERMOSTAT FEATURES
- AF mode-controls ambient temperature with floor temperature limitation
- F mode controls the floor temperature using an external temperature sensor
- Two temperature sensors-one in floor, one in thermostat for accuracy and security
Installation Monitor
The Installation Monitor can help give you peace of mind while installing the floor warming system. Connect the system leads to the monitor prior to installation. The monitor will "scream" a warning in the event the heating element is cut or damaged allowing you to make any necessary repairs before the heating system is embedded in mortar. If the alarm sounds, stop work and consult the operation manual. We still recommend checking the ohms of the floor heating system with a multimeter before, during, and after installation.
- Red light and alarm indicates lead wires have come loose from the terminals or damage has occurred to the heating system
- A white light indicates the monitor is operating
- Can monitor up to 3 systems at one time when they are temporarily connected in series
CABLE GUIDES
Designed for fast installation of the the heating cable, simply loop the floor heating cable around the guide as you lay the cable system across the subfloor.
Secure the cable guides according to the planned layout using screws, nails, adhesive or glue approved for use with the given subfloor. The heating element should be spaced 3" apart across the area to be heated. Cable guides should be run perpendicular to heating cables. The heating cables should have a minimum distance of 2" from walls and objects. Spacing between cable guides should not exceed 36" in distance. Secure the heating element to cable guides by wrapping the wire around the stud. Maintain moderate tension of cable throughout installation. Do not twist heating element and keep the minimum bending radius of the cable to 1".
Cable guides are 12" long and can be cut to length. Includes enough cable guides for cable heating system.

User questions & answers
Question: | I need 24" x 60".. Can I route the last one feet wire along the side to increase the width to 24" and keep the length to |
Answer: | the 100x150mm that are Square/Rectangular Size: 4x6in. are too long for this case |
Question: | I am planning to install wooden floor (hardwood or laminate) in my bathroom. Can I use this system to heat wooden floors or is is for tiles only |
Answer: | I can just squeeze three Tiffen 77mm sized cases in this pouch but the front flap will barely close. Bower filter cases are even larger and are a real stretch to make fit. |
Question: | I have a concrete slab that I would like to add electric floor heating and tile over it. How do I avoid moisture build up with this product |
Answer: | Yes, it can, but you may find it too large for the 40.5 size and therefore not as convenient to use? I use it for 77mm filters and they fit very inside perfectly. It is very well made and I really like it. |
Question: | Can this be used when installing a drop-in tub to keep bath water warm |
Answer: | The belt loop is a sewn on nylon belt that closes with Velcro. The Velcro "pinches" the belt strap on both top and bottom -- it Velcro's to the body of the pack then a flap comes over and secures the closure from the other side. It is locked so well it is kind of difficult to get off. I am pretty satisfied with its security, BUT, I never use it on my belt. I keep it in my camera bag. |
