Behind the Scenes: How Salley Mavor Created the Art for MY BED

I like to think of my artwork as miniature shallow stage sets with scenery, props and characters bringing the story to life. I worked on the book for 2 years, with each scene taking from 1 to 2 months to complete.

Sketches

When I first read Rebecca Bond’s manuscript, I imagined scenes jam-packed with patterns and textures that created a warm sense of home. I kept this vision in mind when I studied reference photos of children, buildings and landscapes from different regions of the world. I drew sketches and used them as guides for the finished artwork.

Fabrics

For each scene in the book, I selected just the right fabrics from my supply. Some fabric I’ve held in storage for decades, such as age-stained linen passed down from my grandmother, which I used to replicate the texture of a Japanese tatami mat. When I couldn’t find printed patterns that were tiny enough for some scenes, I embroidered designs on fabric in miniature scale.

Stitching

I stitched the artwork for My Bed entirely by hand, using a variety of techniques I’ve developed through years of experimentation. Sewing machines can’t replicate the look and feel that I want. Manipulating materials in my hands is the best way I’ve found to translate what I imagine into something real to share.

Beads

To add a touch of 3-dimentional whimsy and help bring out the charm of the little environments, I sewed on beads of all types. The bead selection process was like an audition for bit parts in a play. I combed through my collection of beads, searching for the precise type and size to make the scenes more true to life.

Wire

Besides fabric, thread and beads, the most essential element in my artwork is wire. I used it as a structural framework to keep limp materials firm and upright and to form free-standing shapes. I covered all of the visible wire with thread and incorporated it into the overall design.

Figures

As I painted the children’s faces on wooden beads, constructed their bodies, formed their little fingers and sewed their pint-sized pajamas and nighties, I fell in love with them. Then, it didn’t matter how much time it took to build the places they call home.

Found Objects

When I find objects with special features that I think will convincingly replicate something in miniature scale, I put them aside and occasionally, they make it into my artwork. These items are like exclamation points used for emphasis, as a way to enhance the storytelling.

Animals

Throughout the book, individual stitched felt animals are pictured on white text panels adjacent to the scenes. I want them to act as visual cues, which readers can identify and associate with the different regions of the world.

Answer:	Yes, it will fit a small frame revolver. It would probably fit two of them. Also make sure your fingerprints are really good, I had to send mine back because it would not read my wife's prints. Her fingers were slightly cracked from washing dishes and would not read them at all. One more thing I did not like was that the lock is on one side. This made it possible to lift the other side and insert a screwdriver. I actually felt like I could pry it apart with just my hands.Good for keeping a kid away from a gun, but not much else. Hope this helps.

Answer:	I find it quite tolerable, with no noticeable or memorable smell. I'm sure it's not scent-free, however.As a scent-sensitive person,this grease has never been a problem for me. It is good quality lubricant as well!

Answer:	The Orbitrac was designed for cleaning standard 12" size records, however it can be used to clean other style/size records including 45's with the 1 1/2" hole if you have a plastic 45 record adapter insert (not a turntable adapter). Answer:	Hi Christopher, to clean the excess dust from the brush you need to clean it with a wet microfiber towel; when too much dirt accumulation is present on the Velvet Brush, the performance and cleaning capabilities might get compromised, if that is the case please soak the brush on a warm soapy solution (you can use a soft hand cleaning soap or baby shampoo diluted 1/20 in water), then dry it using a microfiber towel to get it back to top performance. Question:	Would this work in an ultrasonic cleaner
Answer:	yes works fine; our pistol team used to clean the .22s by immersion in Hoppes and ultra sonic once a year (shot maybe 200 rnds per week). No other cleaning or lube. Shot them "dry" (when dripping shoot a few rounds starting with a rag over the back of the slide so that you don't "clean your face" by accident :)

Answer:	Jeff,Hoppes's No. 9 is not an "oil (as in lubricant)". It is used to clean the bore of the rifle and does an excellent job. The caliber of rifle is not a factor and I have used it for more than 50 or so years with great results.John

Answer:	NO!!! I have Hagland's Disease (bump on back of foot) and cannot wear a shoe that touches the back of my foot. These shoes are the PERFECT answer!

Answer:	I bought the white with silver in my usual size: HUGE! My husband who is a man's 12-13 found them too large for him. Then I bought a whole size down: still too big and fell out of them. So now I'm going to buy 2 full sizes smaller than my usual size.

Answer:	I have the white ones with silver strip on the side. They do not have laces. they have 5 silver eyelets going up the front with fake bands across them to make it look like fake laces if you look quickly. But these are slip on shoes and do not lace up

Answer:	If you are a sz 7 or 37, then I would suggest going up a whole sz.(8 or 38) They run small and very narrow. I hope that helps
