Answer:	so I thought it was good for these activities. But two problems now surface, after 3 months of robust usage:1) the velcro like mechanism comes loose with muscle expansion. I can't seem to find the right tension to allow for muscle expansion. Too loose and it slips down. Too tight and the velcro breaks open and the device flops away from the skin and you lose tracking.2) Also I am losing tracking. Originally I thought it was because I went out of BT range of my smartphone, but now that's not the case for sure, as it lost tracking just being within 10 feet of the phone. So quickly this device is becoming useless.

If you're wearing an ant+/btle watch (I swim with my fenix 2) the HRM will transmit HRM information and if the watch is close enough it will pick up the information. I wear my Fenix 3 and Scosche HRM on the same arm very close to one another and get pretty consistent readings both in open water and when swimming laps.
