This is true healing yoga on a simplified scale. I don't understand how something that looks so easy can have any affect on your well-being, but it definitely does. Soothing music and a beginning relaxation session get your body and mind ready for the exercises. Easy gentle moves all while seated in a chair with emphasis on deep breathing gets oxygen to all the muscles that are being stretched and creates the miracle :o) And the time flies by - total of 40 minutes including the ending relaxation, but it seems more like only 5 minutes have passed so don't be afraid it will take too long and that you will get bored. It's the best 40 minutes I could ever spend. I haven't gone past the basic session yet but hope to soon start making use of Anne's other DVD set for seniors, called Stretch & Strength, on alternate days. I had so much improvement in the first couple of weeks I have since bought 8 DVDs as gifts for family and friends that I thought might get some benefit from it. Yoga has been a passion of mine for several years and at 53 years old, this past spring I became a certified instructor and have been instructing the more mature adult ( no one under 65 ) at a retirement facility. An educator at the renowned Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Anne Pringle Burnell is the creator of the Stronger Seniors Chair Workout Program as seen on Lifetime Television, The History Channel, and CNN. Chosen as a presenting instructor at the National Council on Aging's annual conference in 2007 and 2010. Anne also developed the Peyow Aqua Pilates program which premiered at the Peninsula Spa.
Anne is certified by the American Council on Exercise, the Aerobics & Fitness Association of America, and she has been a guest instructor at spas and resort throughout North America and the Caribbean. I was drawn to working with Bodywisdommedia because they produce DVDs they are interactive. Rather than a "one size fits all" single routine that is typical of most products, these DVDs offer choice, allowing the user to customize and change their yoga practice to suit their needs. No two persons are the same so the ability to change your practice - easing shoulder tension one day and an invigorating morning wake up the next - come as close as possible to allowing you to address your individual needs at home. Not only do people have different physical needs, but they have different time constraints as well. If you have only 20 minutes, there is a practice for you but there are longer practices as well (some as long as 90 minutes) that address the total body/mind connection. The sheer number of yoga sequences offered on each of these DVDs is a first. They are incredibly comprehensive.
How were you able to get the Dalai Lama involved?
This project dovetailed perfectly with the Dalai Lama's message that modern stress is one of the greatest obstacles to our mental happiness and physical wellbeing. Because we are long-time sincere practitioners, having a 30-minute lecture of the Dalai Lama teaching how to meditate on the Yoga for Stress Relief DVD was a perfect fit. Bodywisdommedia also has a broader relationship with the Office of Tibet and are releasing historic lectures with "A Path to Happiness" being the first one.

The titles are very indicative of what appears on the DVD and therefore a good guide. I really enjoyed making Yoga for Stress Relief because it is incredibly relevant. We strove to make the sequences accessible to as many people as possible, whether they are a beginner or long time practitioner. Yoga for Beginners is a great, non-threatening place to get started and includes lots of sound technique developed over my 30 years as a yoga teacher. Power Yoga for Every Body is a bit more challenging taking you from the beginning level and gradually progressing to much more demanding routines.

The goal of this program is to combine elements of yoga and pilates in a way that complements and enhances the pairing of exercises and techniques in order to provide a more complete, balanced, total body core strength and stretch workout.
We’ll be taking a more gentle approach during the sessions, which means we won’t be putting any excess strain on the joints (no downward facing dog or sun salutations, for example), however you may choose to advance the poses when appropriate if you would like to add more challenge at any time. Session #1: Standing Series (30 Minutes) features standing only poses and exercises that help improve balance, functional core strength, total body stability and mobility.

Answer: | We do recommend a sturdy 4 legged chair, without arms, and a mostly upright back rest for optimal safety and range of motion during the exercises. 😊 There are seated and standing workouts. If you are standing the chair is there for balance if you need. There is no correct way to sit in the chair but I would suggest sitting near the front to engage your core and give yourself a little more of a challenge. If you need to work on posture and are not as comfortable on the front edge, I would suggest sitting all the way back. Do what is most comfortable for you! You can use a chair other than the one described above and still receive the benefits of completing the workouts. The #1 priority is your safety so be sure your chair is sturdy. Some members have even used couches or loveseats as a substitute which is fine. Let me know if you have any other questions. I am happy to help! 👍 |

Answer: | The workouts we offer are safe and low impact. Great for building strength and flexibility! Many members are in the same situation as you are and are benefiting from the program. I would recommend consulting your doctor if you have any questions on what movements you can or cannot perform. Keep in mind, all of these are low impact so they are most likely OK but checking with your doctor to be safe is always a good idea! 👍 We do not have a video showing the precise moves used but the entire workout is chair based. |
