12 best life vest for kids
Life vests for kids, also known as life jackets or personal flotation devices (PFDs) for children, are essential safety gear designed to keep young individuals safe while participating in water-related activities. These vests are specially crafted to provide buoyancy and support to children in the water, helping to prevent accidents and drowning. Here are some key points about life vests for kids:
Safety Standards: Life vests for kids are subject to stringent safety standards established by organizations like the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) in the United States and similar agencies in other countries. These standards ensure that the vests meet specific criteria for buoyancy and durability.
Buoyancy: The primary function of a kids' life vest is to provide buoyancy, helping a child stay afloat in the water. They are designed to keep a child's head above water while in a vertical or slightly tilted-back position.
Sizing: Proper sizing is crucial to ensure the effectiveness of a life vest. There are various sizes available to fit children of different ages and weights. It's essential to choose a vest that fits snugly but comfortably and does not ride up when in the water.
Design: Life vests for kids typically have a bright and colorful design, making them appealing to children. Some may even have fun patterns or characters to make them more attractive to young users.
Type: There are different types of life vests designed for various water activities. Type we vests are suitable for offshore use, while Type II vests are for near-shore activities. Type III vests are often used for boating and water sports and are the most common type for kids.
Features: Many kids' life vests have additional features such as adjustable straps, grab handles, and reflective materials for increased visibility in the water.
Comfort: Comfort is important, especially for children, as they are more likely to wear a life vest if it feels comfortable. Look for vests with soft lining, wide armholes, and secure closures.
Maintenance: Regular inspection and maintenance of kids' life vests are essential to ensure they remain in good condition. This includes checking for signs of wear and tear, mildew, and ensuring that all fasteners and straps are working correctly.
Legal Requirements: In many regions, there are legal requirements for the use of life vests, especially for children on boats or during certain water activities.Always follow local regulations to ensure safety compliance.
Education: It's crucial to educate children on the importance of wearing a life vest and how to use it properly. Practicing putting on and fastening the vest, as well as basic water safety rules, can be valuable.
Life vests for kids play a critical role in water safety, whether children are boating, swimming, or participating in water sports. Ensuring that children have access to properly fitted and well-maintained life vests is an essential part of keeping them safe in and around the water.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a strap between the legs on 50-90 lb. vest |
Answer: | I have two daughters age 10 weighing 50#. This vest fits on them so well (almost fit) that I am actually doubting that they will be able to use it when they gain another 20# (for a new weight of 70#). Particularly on the chest area. |
Question: | Does this vest have zipper |
Answer: | No. The 50-90 lb vest does not have a leg strap. The 30-50 lb vest does have a strap. Unfortunately, the 30-50 lb size vest keeps showing up on this page, incorrectly described, as a variation. I am working with Amazon to get the 30-50 lb vest permanently moved to its own page so that there is no more confusion. Most of the reviews complaining that the vest is too small most likely received the 30-50 lb version of the vest and didn't realize it. |
Question: | I have a skinny 8.5 year old son who is 48 lbs . 49" Would the 50-90 vest work for him |
Answer: | I believe so-check the information on Amazon-that's what I did. |
Question: | Is there a leg strap on the 50-90lb jacket |
Answer: | I use it for both. My boys swim well but when we are floating down a river they wear their jackets, and of course for boating/tubing. |

About Us
William P. Hilger started what would become Stearns, Inc. among the lakes and plains of central Minnesota. His first successful product was an electrically powered windshield heater that was a big hit in the colder climates of central Minnesota in the late 1920's, and eventually was a must-have product for cars from California to Maine. The company changed hands after World War II and became Stearns Manufacturing Company. The heating systems in cars had matured to the point where, anymore, the idea of needing a frost shield was old-fashioned. The business then turned towards the future: Plastics. This was the starter's gun in a race towards ownership of the designed PFD market; a race that Stearns would easily win. In 2008, Coleman added to its family of brands the distinct quality of Stearns products, the most recognized player in the life jacket business. It’s a natural fit.

Answer: | Yes. The two colors are meant to act as visual aids. |
Question: | What's the difference between the puddle jumper basic and the deluxe |
Answer: | Yes the women's and medium are the same size. |
Question: | I had NO success with these the last time I went skeet shooting. Any advice |
Answer: | No, it will not click unless the Swing Impact Trainers (i.e. Swing Caddy PRO, Swing Caddy, Hole in One, Batting Pro & Batting Pro Junior) swing head speed reaches or passes the Control Scale set speed/yardage mark. It is because users are supposed to keep practicing with the Swing Impact Trainers to reach higher head speed/yardage to improve their swing speed for longer distance. Please contact us at the email address or phone number on our SwingImpact.com website if you wish to have more detailed response to your questions. |
Question: | which size is this life jacket |
Answer: | The second click of our Swing Impact Trainers (i.e. Swing Caddy PRO, Swing Caddy, Hole in One, Batting Pro & Batting Pro Junior) is to indicate swing follow-through and sinker reset in their internationally PATENTED "Sinker Spring Loaded Magnet" technology. If the second click occurs past the back of your head, it is the indication of your complete optimum swing follow-through. If it sounds before the back of your head, it shows you had an incomplete follow-through. In either case, the sinker is automatically reset back to its original position. Please contact us at the email address and/or phone number shown in our SwingImpact.com website if your need more detailed explanations and/or have any other questions. Swing Impact Team |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this life jacket rated uscg type 1, 2 or |
Answer: | Totally child! Would not fit any adult. |
Question: | can this be used for 35 lbs kid |
Answer: | Yes, both my daughter and son use this life jacket while kyacking and swimming in a lake. It fits them well and does not seem to rub and allows them to move their arms freely. |
Question: | Adult or Child |
Answer: | You are correct in commenting about misuse of the tern "Life Jacket" which this product definitely is NOT. This is also correctly describe as "Swimming Vest" and provide a non-swimmer flotation assistance while the child can learns to tread water and keep their own face out. Another common type has a large, wide collar which can with assistance float a young child on their back. As a swimming instructor and water survival instructor for the military with over 40 years experience I have seen many cases where guardians did not wish to get wet expecting the PFD to provide supervision. In any case a responsible person must be within arm’s reach of a non-swimmer. If any kind of survival is expected a Coast Guard Type one(1) or two (2) is the correct choice and any accidental fall into cold water under 80 degrees can be dangerous. Also as a foot note overall this product appears to be a reasonably well designed. I particularly like the two crotch straps preventing the jacket from riding up over the child face a potentially dangerous situation. |
Question: | can this be used for beach swimming |
Answer: | It’s adjustable or I have just put it on the side when not in use. I don’t believe it’s removable. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I see the small says up to 33 pounds, does anyone know what the starting weight is? My toddler is only 21 pounds |
Answer: | There are 5 categories of PFDs, but most paddlers should use a Type III or V USCG-approved PFD. Type I: Offshore Life Jackets. These are geared for rough or remote waters where rescue may take a while. Though bulky, they have the most buoyancy, a bright color and can turn most unconscious people face up in the water.Type II: Near-shore Vests. Calm inland waters, where a fast rescue is likely, is the intent of these PFDs. They will turn some unconscious wearers to the face-up position but not all of them. They are bulky, but less so than Type I.Type III: Flotation Aids. These are suitable for most padders where there is a chance for a quick rescue. They offer freedom of movement and the most comfort for continuous wear. Type IIIs are designed so wearers can put themselves in a face-up position, but they may have to tilt their head back to avoid being face down in water.Type IV: Throwable Devices. Cushions or ring buoys are designed to be thrown to someone in trouble and provide backup to a PFD. They are not for nonswimmers, rough waters or the unconscious. The USCG does not require these for canoes or kayaks.Type V: Special-use Devices. These are specialized PFDs for specific activities. To be acceptable by the USCG, they must be used for the activity specified on the label. Varieties include kayaking, waterskiing, windsurfing, hybrid vests and deck suits. |
Question: | Can this be used as a life jacket |
Answer: | I have the exact same problem. My daughter is 25 lbs and it fits but there is a little room (not a lot like the other styles). It could work for you but will have some wiggle room. |
Question: | Does this hold a child upright in the water |
Answer: | We advise the chest measurement for the 1-2 to be 48-52cm - which is for approx. weight 11kg-15kg. We do advise to go with the chest measurement rather than the weight, Kind Regards Gemma @ Splash About |
Question: | Is this suitable for wading in ocean |
Answer: | It clearly said inside when we received this will not prevent drowning. We returned it the next day! |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work on both a 3yr and a 5yr old kid? Trying to better understand the 1sz fits all range. Thanks |
Answer: | It depends on what they weigh. It's for 30-50 lb kids. If your 5 yr old is almost 50 lbs, you'd probably want to get the next size up, otherwise their chin may be under water. Also, this vest has a narrow fit, so if your kids are chunky, they might find it too tight. Check the provided chest measurements. |
Question: | I just purchased another life jacket for my son who is 38lbs and I could not zip it up and ended up returning it. What is the chest measurement |
Answer: | The chest measurement for that size jacket is 25-29 inches. Keep in mind that jacket will be tighter when dry and then expand when it gets wet. Hope that helps! |
Question: | Is this a bit longer than basic jackets? Im having trouble finding something that fits my tall skinny 6 year old |
Answer: | No. I remember it running on the smaller side. My son out grew it fairly quickly. I believe these jackets are designed for water skiing and aim to be minimal weight/ resistance/drag |
Question: | Is this a type I, II, or III approved floation device? Is there a strap to grap the child on the back? A review says yes, but none is pictured |
Answer: | It is type lll, and yes it has a strap. If you look at the pictures on the yellow and pink you can see it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | My twins weigh about 45 pounds what size should we get |
Answer: | Yep! My oldest son is between 56-58 lbs and this holds him up really well. I thought he'd sink a bit compared to my 38 lb son, but they seem to keep him up just as well. |
Question: | My daughter is two and half year old and 25 lbs |
Answer: | From what I've researched, the deluxe has a different material on it. After the ease of use of the basic puddle jumper, I fail to see any point in getting the deluxe. My son used his nearly every day for 10 days and the material never bothered him. |
Question: | Is there a zipper on the front |
Answer: | I don't think skeet shooting has anything to do with toddler life jackets...does it? |
Question: | Will this fit a 6 yrs old |
Answer: | This specific type of "water wings" only come in one size, I put it on my daughter for the first time around 18-months old (about 27 pounds, 33 inches). It's meant for toddlers that can walk well, not infants. It's very adjustable, so she should be able to wear it until she's 4 or 5. Hope that helps. |
