Answer:	It is waterproof. I returnede it and bought the Ritchie Sport Bracket Mount Compass which is smaller. The company also makes a compass for kayaks. And has a tie down to attach it to a kayak. The model name is Kayaker Surface Mount. Hope this helps.

Answer:	Push two buttons on the sides and the base detaches, attach base to surface with two stainless steel screws and drill a small hole for the light wire, then snap compass back onto base.

Answer:	Like most marine compasses of decent quality, there's an East-West compensator on the front and a North-South adjustment on the side. I wouldn't buy a compass without these because every vehicle exhibits magnetic influence on an onboard compass, which throws the tracking off. The compensators allow you to adjust the compass heading so it's more accurately matched up to the real declination by offsetting the influences of your vehicle. You can also use the adjustments to offset magnetic declination to some degree, allowing the compass to indicate closer to true North or East.

1. Durability
