I remove my tactical light when I put my AR in the case. If you have other accessories mounted on the sides of your rifle, you will need to remove those. When you zip the case, it has a nice snug fit around the rifle. What is making your rifle measure 6 inches across? I have a red dot sight mounted on top of mine, and that presents no problem when putting the rifle in the case. If you could describe your rifle set up in more detail, perhaps I can answer your question better. I have been very pleased with this case. In fact, I bought a second one not long after getting my first one. It has good padding, the magazine pockets are nice, it closes easily, offers good protection, and looks good.
