13 best sportbike tires
Sportbike tires are a critical component of a motorcycle's performance and safety, particularly in sports and high-performance riding scenarios. Here's what you need to know about sportbike tires:
Tire Types:
- Street Tires: These are designed for regular road use. They provide a balance between grip, longevity, and performance on paved surfaces.
- Sport Tires: Sportbike tires are geared toward enhanced grip and handling at higher speeds and more aggressive riding. They are suitable for both street and occasional track use.
- Track Tires: These are specially designed for racetrack use and offer the highest levels of grip and performance. They may have a limited lifespan due to their softer rubber compounds.
Tire Construction:
- Sportbike tires often feature a radial construction, which provides better stability, cornering, and overall performance.
- They come with a variety of tread patterns and compounds optimized for specific riding conditions, such as wet weather or dry track surfaces.
Tire Size:
- Sportbike tires come in various sizes to fit different motorcycle models and rider preferences. The tire size is specified in terms of width, aspect ratio, and diameter (e.g., 120/70ZR17).
Tire Pressure:
- Maintaining the correct tire pressure is crucial for safety and performance. Riders should check and adjust tire pressure regularly, as it affects grip and handling.
- Recommended tire pressures can vary depending on the tire brand and model, so it's essential to follow the manufacturer's guidelines.
Dual-Compound Tires:
- Some sportbike tires feature dual-compound construction, with a softer rubber compound on the sides for improved cornering grip and a harder compound in the center for better durability during straight-line riding.
Tread Patterns:
- Tread patterns on sportbike tires are designed for specific purposes. Slick tires have no tread and are used on dry tracks for maximum grip. Treaded tires offer better water dispersion and are suitable for wet or mixed conditions.
Warm-Up Time:
- Sportbike tires often require some warm-up time to reach their optimal grip levels. Riders should exercise caution, especially when starting a ride on cold tires.
Replacing Tires:
- Sportbike tires wear out over time due to the high stresses they endure. It's essential to monitor tread wear and replace tires when the tread depth reaches a critical level to maintain safety.
Accessories:
- Inflation devices and tire pressure gauges are essential accessories for sportbike riders. These tools allow riders to maintain proper tire pressure for safety and performance.
Maintenance:
- Regular maintenance, including tire inspections, balancing, and alignment checks, helps extend the life of sportbike tires and ensures consistent performance.
Choosing the right sportbike tires depends on your riding style, preferences, and the type of motorcycle you own. It's crucial to select tires that match your intended use, whether it's daily commuting, spirited weekend rides, or track racing, to maximize both safety and performance.

The Metzeler Sportec M5 is one of the top sportbike tires to ever hit the road. It combines longevity, steep lean angles, and safety while on wet surfaces. The Sportec M5 features Interact Technology, a variable steel string that winds tension throughout 5 zones that alters the behavior of the tire from the crown to the shoulder. The center of the tire is constructed with higher tension to provide higher mileage usage. The next zone has the lowest tension which provides the best grip. This zone is known as the mid-lean zone. The shoulder of the tire, the section used during a full lean is comprised of high tension for greater stability. The innovative Pi inspired tread pattern helps displace water for unmatched wet weather behavior. The resins blend and silica compound help to produce a quick warm-up for excellent traction. If your high powered "crotch rocket" or sportbike needs a fresh set of skins, do your bike a favor and grab some Metzeler Sportec M5 tires.
- Guaranteed date code of 2019 or newer.
- Tread pattern designed to assist in water displacement.
- Geometry and rubber compounds allow for steep lean angles.
- Resin blend and silica compound speed up tire warm-up for great traction.
- Features a high tension center that prolongs the life of the tire for miles and miles of use.
User questions & answers
Question: | the difference between the m5 and the m3 sportec |
Answer: | Clincher is the best option than Wire Bead, if you flat your tyre, flat is more soft an easy to mount and unmount. :) |
Question: | Q fecha de fábricacion |
Answer: | In a Simple way, The clincher its the type o tire construction and how it goes on the rim, People related "clincher" as be "folding". Wirebead it comes exactly like you look the tire (big circle), and for that reason the materials are more Hard/resistant, The Folding "clincher" its for more performance so they are lighter than wirebead. Also the way they build the tire allows the tire to come Folding so that less space in case you need to carry a spare on you backpack |
Question: | Que medida de tubo interno usan estos neumáticos? Tanto el delantero como el trasero ? Deseo comprar el juego de llantas y el tubo interno |
Answer: | Yes it is foldable. |
Question: | Will these fit a 2002 Honda shadow vt750cd Ace |
Answer: | There are "folding" clinchers which are handy if you want to take an extra tire with you on a ......long....ride. There are also "wire bead" clinchers which, frankly, I feel are a better choice if you are buying new tires for your bike. As far as I know, the only color that Continental wire bead clinchers come in is ALL black. The Continental tires with the colored stripes in various colors are only the folding tire type. However, both wire bead and the folding bead tires are all the clincher type of tires ......i.e.they need tubes. I've never liked tubless bike tires because they have their own set of issues. |

Question: | It's tubeless |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are these tubeless tires |
Answer: | Yes, the are manufactured in Germany. Thank you. |
Question: | Will these tires fit on a 700cx23 50mm carbon rim |
Answer: | I’ve riden 100’s of miles in the rain on my road bike with Conti Gator Gardshell 25’s without traction issues, so they do the job. Supposedly, Conti’s 4-Season tires are the best for wet traction but I had problems with flats. |
Question: | I got on my bike 700/28c will these tires fit my bike and one more question you get Two packs for |
Answer: | My. buddy rode his Continentals until the threads started showing through the tread. I would not recommend that. Conti's have a "thread" pattern on the sidewalks however. I would check the sidewalks for cracks and the tread for thin spots or uneven wear. Also for small punctures or tears that don't result in flats. Replace if any of those conditions. I wouldn't trust a worn tire on a 35-40mph descent. |
Question: | what is the psi range for the tires |
Answer: | The "hard shell" is one of the most enduring road tires that Continental makes. It is built with bead to bead protection of DuraSkin® and an extra wide PolyX Breaker. The added material under the tread strip improves mileage and puncture protection. Wired implies there is a small wire around the circumference of the tire; it cannot be folded. Beaded is like thick rubber and can be folded; this is good if you want to travel with tires. I usually buy the wire because it's cheaper and I don't travel with extra tires. I have never had a wire bead puncture my inner tube. This Gator Hardshell performs! I have ridden 8,000 miles with NO FLATS on these tires. They are amazing. They are tough to install, but you only have to install them once a season. I am a girl, and I can get them on my rims... |
Question: | Are these tires actually manufactured in Germany |
Answer: | Correct |
Question: | How is the wet weather traction on these tires |
Answer: | Difficult but not impossible. Tire tools, windex as a lube and strong hands. |
Question: | How can you tell when the tires are nearing replacement |
Answer: | Maximum air pressure as printed on the side of the tire is 130 psi. |
Question: | What is the difference between "hard shell," "bead," and "wired?" I have heard of the later two but not "hard shell." Also, are these easy to install |
Answer: | These are all season tires that have substantial wet grip. |

User questions & answers
Question: | x23 vs 700x25, what's the difference and which is faster |
Answer: | These tires will inflate to a maximum of 120PSI. You may find if you are a heavier rider, you may want to pump them up to only 100PSI or 105PSI, as they will feel rock hard at that pressure. |
Question: | Kinda Stupid Question but...Does this include BOTH tires |
Answer: | No, just a regular tire. I'd consider it in the medium range for puncture resistance - I use tire liners which work well with these tires. https://amzn.to/2FTy93F |
Question: | If I mount the tire to rotate in the reverse direction, will I travel backwards in time |
Answer: | Not tubeless. This is an inner tube tire! |
Question: | Will these tires help me get laid |
Answer: | The M3 has dual compound: soft sides, harder center. The M5 is the softer compound throughout |

Continental Gatorskin Tire
The Continental Gatorskin is the ultimate training & racing tire where puncture protection is a priority. Using the latest proprietary technology against flats the Gatorskin range uses PolyX Breaker and DuraSkin sidewall protection.
The Gatorskin tire is made for the long haul. Backed by PolyX Breaker, a tried and true puncture protections system and the DuraSkin anti-cut fabric turn the Gatorskin into a true long distance runner.
DuraSkin - the ultimate sidewall
Tires with DuraSkin sidewall protection have to be able to roll with the punches. They are used under the harshest conditions. On messenger bikes, the tires skid along curbs; on touring bikes, they cross continents without wearing out. During races, they have to endure tough tests such as the Paris-Roubaix. The high-quality polyamide fabric protects the tire casing against the worst conditions. These tires stand out thanks to their signature brown sidewalls.
PolyX Breaker - proven technology
Continental's PolyX Breaker brings their car expertise to the bicycle tire segment. Polyester has been used successfully for years in Continental's car tires and been tried and tested many times. The extremely resistant polyester fiber is woven tightly crosswise. In this way, a very high fabric density is reached which not only makes the Breaker more resistant to foreign objects but is also especially resistant to punctures. This protection is accomplished without affecting rolling resistance.
Gatorskin for every rider
The ever popular, tried and true Gatorskin is available in wire bead and folding versions that span a wide variety of tire sizes. Designed for commuting, touring, or heavy training - the Gatorskin will not let you down.
Bestselling Tires on Amazon

User questions & answers
Question: | Are these tubeless tires |
Answer: | The 25 is 2 mm wider. Both sizes will work on the same rims. There is a definite trend in the last year or two to put slightly wider tires on road bikes. In fact I think that many bike shops and tire manufacturers are trying to get rid of their 23 mm inventory. I think this is a very good thing. The 25 will probably be as fast (some claim faster) than the 23. More importantly, you can run slightly lower pressure, which gives you a slightly softer, more comfortable ride. Also, because you have a little more rubber on the road, you will have a more secure footing on sandy or wet pavement. You may also be slightly less likely to flat as well, with the 25. As soon as I wear out the 23 mm tires I have on my Ridley Noah, I will be putting on 25 mm tires.I would most definitely recommend the 700x25. |
Question: | Will these tires fit on a 700cx23 50mm carbon rim |
Answer: | No. This is per tire. |
Question: | I got on my bike 700/28c will these tires fit my bike and one more question you get Two packs for |
Answer: | Just so we're clear. All of this dialogue is relevant. However, I want to point out that if you mount the the 700x32c's onto a unicycle it will be possible to ride wheelies. However you have been warned, a phenomenon that will inevitably rotate around your axle's axis and the tires stand still...they honestly brake that well! The first time this happened I fell off. It's definitely something to get use to. |
Question: | what is the psi range for the tires |
Answer: | It kinda depends. I have a tandem bike which I installed them on and the person I was riding with noticed them and got very excited and yes I got laid very quickly. Same thing happened with the next person to ride with me. I normally get laid 20 plus times per set but you must have a tandem bike. From my experience the answer is yes. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the manufacturing date |
Answer: | No, they require a tube. I bought tubes with them |
Question: | michlen sell motorcycle tires with y rating |
Answer: | The 700 x 23 tire will fit on your rim. |
Question: | what is the date code on the tires |
Answer: | Yes it will fit assuming you pick the 28c size. You get 1 pair, 2 tires. I’ve put 300 miles on these and they are great. I would say as good as the Conti 4000’s. As all conti tires they are a bit hard to get on the rim. So watch out for pinches before inflating to full. |
Question: | What is the DOT date |
Answer: | PSI range is determined more by tire size than the tube. Thses work up to 120 easily but even with 23 or 25mm tires you won't want to run more than 110. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How are these tires on wet pavement |
Answer: | printed on the side of the tire. |
Question: | Is this a folding tire |
Answer: | Looking at the product sticker these likely have a W speed rating which is lower than Y. A W rating indicates a max speed of 168mph and the sticker says 167mph. A lot of people (and the product listing here) think Z is a speed rating but it's not. It's just something that is added to the size designation by manufacturers when the speed rating of the tire is V (149mph), W (168mph), or Y (186mph). |
Question: | What are people getting for mileage out of these |
Answer: | Tires I received and installed 4719 front, 0519 rear. New enough manufacture date that there will not be any degradation issues. |
Question: | Do these come in a pair? or one |
Answer: | 4719 front, 0519 rear for the pair I ordered. |

User questions & answers
Question: | No air coming out of schrader pump head. is there a switch? whether i clamp down or up, air only comes out of presta valve |
Answer: | These are road tires. They are designed for fairly smooth tarmac. I would not Ride terrain, such as woodland trails or even gravel roads with these tires. They have tires with tread for this type of riding. |
Question: | What is the barrel made of? And how well is it with presta valves |
Answer: | Be cautious about confusing rim width with tire width. A 28c 700 rim is very wide. Rim width is measured between the flanges. For a 28 mm tire, Continental's recommendations for a well base rim are between 16 and 20 mm, and for a hook edge rim, designated with the letter "C" (for "Crotchet") between 15c and 19c. Relevant standards are ETRTO and din 7800, or Google Sheldon Brown tire sizes, which has a tire/rim size chart. Or... You could choose to believe the anecdotal story of some random guy who claims that all road bike tires and rims are totally interchangeable over the manufacturers guidelines and government safety standards. Your call. |
Question: | I need a pump for 60psi that is easy to compress to avoid hurting my back. Do I need a fat barrel or thin one |
Answer: | We run an older set of Bontrager wheels on one bike and Mavic Kysrium SLs on another and have had no trouble getting the Grand Sport on and off.Easy business. That said, all wheels are a bit different, so your experience may vary. |
Question: | Is it made in China |
Answer: | A couple differences: First, the Ultra Sport has a 'wire' bead, which means the tire has a built-in piece of somewhat sturdy wire for its circumference. This also means the tire will not 'fold,' as the Grand Sport Race will. (Not that one folds them much once they're on the bike.) This wire bead also makes the Ultra Sport heavier. In this case, Continental marks this difference at about 70 grams (2.5 ounces) heavier per tire. For tires this is not a trivial amount to most, as the added 'weight on the ground' may make the bike feel sluggish, etc. The Grand Sport also costs more, obviously. Most every Kevlar-beaded tire costs more than its wire counterpart. All apologies for any redundancies with others' responses, too.Good luck. |
Product features
High Volume vs. High Pressure
Bell’s Air Attack Series floor pumps are specifically designed to inflate tires fast. Their high-volume, wide-barrel design pushes more air with each stroke to quickly inflate the wider tires found on most cruiser, mountain, BMX and kids’ bikes.
Bell’s Air Glide Series floor pumps are designed for inflation of all types of bike tires. Their tall, thin-barrel design offers less resistance, making it easy to inflate cruiser, mountain, BMX and kids’ wide tires as well as the thinner, high-pressure tires found on road and commuter bikes.
Additional Features
Bicycle pumps inflate bicycle tires, but they’re also used for all kinds of other inflation jobs like pumping up sports balls, toys and rafts. That’s why most Bell pumps include a bonus ball needle and inflation cone that store conveniently right on the hose.
Additional Features
Most bikes use Schrader valves, the same short, sturdy valve used on car tires. Presta valves are typically found on road and high end mountain bike tires that require high air pressure. Don’t know what kind you have? Don’t worry – nearly all Bell pumps can accommodate both!
Additional Features
Proper tire pressure lets your bike roll quickly, ride smoothly and fend off flats. Bell offers a variety of foot, frame and floor pumps with accurate, easy-read gauges that take the guess work out inflating your tires to the correct pressure.
Additional Features
Certain Bell floor pumps feature our exclusive, soft touch handles which are co-molded with a soft, easy grip texture for comfort.
