14 best wah pedals

A wah pedal, also known as a wah-wah pedal, is a popular guitar effects pedal used by electric guitarists to modify the tone and create a distinctive and expressive sound. It is a crucial component in the world of electric guitar effects and is often associated with iconic guitarists and genres. Here are the key features and aspects of wah pedals:

  1. Tone Modulation: A wah pedal is designed to modulate the guitar's tone by altering the frequency response of the signal. It achieves this effect by emphasizing certain frequencies while attenuating others, creating a "wah-wah" or vocal-like sound.

  2. Expression Pedal: A typical wah pedal has a rocking or treadle foot pedal that allows the guitarist to control the effect manually. By moving the pedal back and forth, the guitarist can sweep through a range of frequencies, creating a dynamic and expressive sound.

  3. On/Off Switch: Most wah pedals feature a switch that allows the guitarist to engage or disengage the effect. When the wah pedal is off, the guitar's tone remains unaltered.

  4. Sweep Range: The sweep range of a wah pedal refers to the span of frequencies it covers. Different wah pedals may have different sweep ranges, and some can offer a more narrow or wide tonal sweep.

  5. Tonal Character: The tonal character of a wah pedal can vary between models. Some produce a sharp and aggressive wah effect, while others have a smoother and more mellow character. Guitarists often choose a wah pedal that suits their preferred style and musical genre.

  6. Historical Significance: The wah pedal has a rich history and was prominently used by guitarists like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Eddie Van Halen. Jimi Hendrix's use of the wah-wah pedal in songs like "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" is particularly famous.

  7. Genres and Styles: Wah pedals are versatile and find applications in a wide range of music genres, including rock, funk, blues, and metal. They are known for their ability to add expressive and emotive qualities to guitar solos and rhythm parts.

  8. Wah-Wah Motion: The pedal's motion mimics the vowel-like "wah-wah" sound, which can be used to accentuate certain notes or phrases in a musical composition. Guitarists often use it for solo improvisations and to add dynamics to their playing.

  9. Placement in Signal Chain: Wah pedals are typically placed early in the signal chain, before other effects like distortion or delay.Placing it at the beginning of the chain allows it to modulate the clean guitar signal.

  10. Variations and Models: There are various wah pedal models and variations available from different manufacturers, each with its own unique sonic characteristics and features. Some well-known brands producing wah pedals include Dunlop, Vox, and Morley.

In summary, a wah pedal is a quintessential effect in the world of electric guitar, known for its ability to shape the guitar's tone and add expressive qualities to the music. Guitarists use it to create the distinctive "wah-wah" sound, making it a vital component in their arsenal of effects pedals for various genres and playing styles.

Question: Could i use this with my acoustic/electric ukulele
Answer: Sure, as long as it uses a standard 1/4 inch guitar cable. It's a very good pedal!
Question: does it come with a adapter
Answer: Do yourself a favor and buy a regulated a/c adapter. They cost more but your won't get all the hum and noise that you get from a $5.00 adapter. Morley and Fulltone have them for about $20.00
Question: I'm a first timer user of this wah pedal, is it normal that when you plugin this the tone will change even it's not in used? The sound is bit muddy
Answer: If it’s off then you should be hearing just your guitar tone from your amp. If it’s sounding muddy, maybe you have it on? If it is off and your guitar tone sounds muddy, that shouldn’t happen.
Question: Does this wah have a true by pass
Answer: Yes it does Nalin.

    Morley 2020 Bad Horsie Wah

The Legendary Bad Horsie Wah now in a pedalboard friendly size. Designed in collaboration with Guitar Virtuoso Steve Vai in the 1990's it has become one of Morley's most popular Wahs and is used by countless professionals worldwide. It's Switchless, Optical, built like a tank and has a second Contour mode, which allows you to tweak the tone. All Morley 2020 pedals also come with a Buffer Circuit that protects your Guitar's natural tone.

    Spring Loaded Switchless Activation

One of Morley's great innovations. Ever thought you switched off your Wah only to find it’s still on? Or have you ever accidentally hit the switch while playing? Go Switchless! Simply step on to engage and step off to bypass. The handy spring also returns the Wah back to it's off position. You can also adjust the Wah off time between 0 and 2 seconds with it's internal trim pot. Stock setting is around 1 second.

Dual Wah Modes with Tone and Level Control plus LED Indication

The first Wah mode is set to Steve Vai's preferred tone and sweep. The second Contour mode allows you to adjust the tone of the Wah. Turning the knob clockwise will increase the treble frequencies, which can be used to mimic a vintage nasally Wah tone. Rolling back counterclockwise mellows the Wah out for a more subtle sound. Level control allows up to 20 db of clean boost in both Wah modes to help you level out in the mix or to boost your signal for solos. Handy LEDs indicate when the Wah is on and when it is in Contour mode.

Never lose your pedal on a dark stage.Morley's Pedal-Glow treadle rubber makes sure you know where your pedal is located. The Morley toe-end sticker also glows in the dark.

    User questions & answers

    Question: Is this optical
Answer: Don't what you mean by " optical "? But if you're looking for a Killer Wah pedal, with volume control ,Grab this! It sounds better than a Vox or Bad Horsey! PS I drilled a small hole at the top right of the pad ,to see work light . Easier to see
Question: My epiphone lp electric has passive pickups. should i get the active pedal (vowel) or the passive (viper
Answer: I have the vowel. What's nice is it is also an active volume pedal so you get two pedals in one and it also acts as buffer. Most of my guitars have passive humbuckers like your Epi and it works great. I use it on a mini pedalboard.
Question: Is the switch true bypass
Answer: I’m not 100% sure. I’m gonna say no. I don’t see anywhere that it says the pedal is true bypass. However I don’t notice any serious change to my sound. It’s a pretty good pedal for the price. I can for sure tell you that much.
Question: for the wah how do you active it? pushing down a pot as same as a cry baby or just puting your feet on as the The wahter (mooer)? thks
Answer: Both. Pushing down the pot changes it from wah to a volume pedal. There is a light showing what mode its in. Having the pedal all the way horizontal puts it at normal tone or volume level.

    User questions & answers

Question: Is this better than 95Q
Answer: Define better. Physically it's the same quality build. It has more features. More features is only "better" if you need the features.
Question: Does the 535Q function as a volume pedal when not in wah mode
Answer: Nope, it's a wah pedal, not a volume pedal....
Question: Has anyone been able to adjust this to go between guitar and bass? I play both for different bands and am looking for a way to carry less gear
Answer: I've tried plugging in my bass through it... it doesn't quite scoop the right frequencies for it-- sounds anemic and flat. I know Dunlop makes a bass wah pedal for this purpose if you're looking for an expression pedal. But what I like about the 535Q is that it's tailored with settings for the more advanced/professional player looking for that dynamic 'wah' sound. Sounds very warm & punchy through an EFX pedal or clean... Have fun!
Question: Does this variant have the auto heel return thing on the pedal
Answer: No, it doesn't. It operates solely by the movement of the foot rocking heel to toe. Wherever you stop your foot's movement is where the wah frequency/sweep will be set at (unless, you click down all the way on the toe end to go into bypass mode). The only pedals I know of that have the auto-return feature, is the Bad Horsie Wah by Morley and at least one other model they make. They have increased their pedal line and have a very large number of wah-wah's you might be interested in. Check out their website.

    User questions & answers

Question: I'm new to playing guitar but my father loved Jimi Hendrix and I was wondering is this plug in play. Just plug it it and start shredding
Answer: Pretty much plug and play. You may try a Fuzz Face pedal as well. Have fun !!
Question: Does this come with the power supply
Answer: No it doesn't. You either can use a power brick or a 9v battery
Question: Does this wah really sound like the wah jimi used? I know he did a couple of modifications to his wah, Is the mods added/built into the wah
Answer: The capacitor that affects the sweep range of the wah is .01uf on the standard Crybaby and .022uf on the Hendrix wah. The Hendrix wah sounds somewhat darker and less peaky in the highs as a result. The 535Q has a rotary switch that let's you select from 5 different ranges, including the stock Crybaby and Hendrix. The 535Q is the best choice, IMHO.
