9 best skimboards
Skimboarding is a water sport that involves riding a skimboard on the shallow shoreline, particularly in the area where the waves break and recede. It's a fun and exciting activity that can be enjoyed by people of various skill levels. Here's what you need to know about skimboards and skimboarding:
Board Types: Skimboards come in two main types: flatland and wave.Flatland skimboards are designed for riding on flat, shallow water, such as lakes or small puddles. Wave skimboards are designed for riding on the ocean shore, where there are waves to catch.
Materials: Skimboards are typically made from wood, fiberglass, foam, or a combination of these materials. Wood skimboards are traditional and provide a classic feel, while foam and fiberglass boards offer more durability and performance.
Shape: The shape of a skimboard can vary, but most have a slightly pointed nose and a flat, wide tail. The shape helps with stability and maneuverability.
Size: Skimboards come in various sizes, with the most important factor being the rider's weight and skill level. A larger board provides more stability, making it suitable for beginners, while smaller boards offer greater maneuverability and are preferred by more experienced riders.
Deck Grip: Skimboards often have a deck grip, similar to that of a surfboard, to provide traction and prevent slipping while riding.
Wax and Traction Pads: Some skimboarders apply wax or traction pads to the deck for additional grip, especially if the board doesn't have a built-in deck grip.
Riding Technique: Skimboarding involves running onto the sand, dropping the board, and then quickly jumping onto it as it slides across the shallow water. Riders can perform various tricks and maneuvers, including spins, wraps, and slides.
Beach Conditions: Skimboarding is best enjoyed on beaches with a gently sloping shoreline and consistent waves. The ideal conditions include small waves breaking close to the shore, allowing riders to catch them easily.
Trick Progression: Skimboarding offers a range of tricks and skills to master, from basic rides to more advanced maneuvers. As with any sport, practice and dedication are key to improving your skills.
Safety: Safety precautions are essential in skimboarding. Always be aware of your surroundings, watch out for other beachgoers, and make sure the shore is free of any obstacles or hazards. It's also a good idea to wear appropriate swimwear, such as board shorts or a wetsuit, and consider using protective gear like helmets and pads for more advanced tricks.
Skimboarding can be a thrilling way to enjoy the beach and the ocean, and it offers plenty of room for creativity and skill development. Whether you're a beginner learning the basics or an experienced rider looking to perform advanced tricks, skimboarding provides a unique and enjoyable experience by the water's edge.

User questions & answers
Question: | I’m 5’6 is this board tall enough for me |
Answer: | A skimboard should reach approximately the top of your rib cage (give or take a couple of inches) when you place the tail on the ground in front of you. Keeping with this guideline makes sure your stance is a good fit for the board and aids in balance. If you are "between sizes" you'll be better off going with the longer board. Thank you for your question! |
Question: | If I’m 6’2 and want to do tricks on shore is this the board for me |
Answer: | So I am 15 years old and i got this board for a gift from my parents. The board came quick and preforms just how i thought is would. It is a very good quality board that i choose over Apex Boards.(i got one later so i did not have to travel)i am 6’0, 135 pounds and this board has great float for me. Even though i have not preformed many tricks on the board, its not the boards falt. A majority of the tricks originates from the placement of your feet and the speed in witch you run with it. I know the board is very capable of amazing tricks, however if this is your first fiberglass/carbon board, i would defiantly recommend this board. I think if you are under 200 pounds that you will have a wonderful time on this board. And also i know it does not show in the pictures, but there is some cool “paint splatter on the bottom for a nice decoration. I highly suggest you consider this awesome board. I hope i was able to help you. |
Question: | how thick is this board |
Answer: | Thank you - we appreciate the question! The foam core for both the 41" and 48" Slapfish Skimboards measures 1/2" thick. When finished both boards are approx 5/8" thick. |
Question: | Is there any way to order the board without the EVA grip |
Answer: | You can purchase the board and message us immediately after, asking that we do not apply the grip prior to shipping. Just let us know if you would like the grip sent not attached or just left out of the order all together. |
