User questions & answers

Question: how sharp is it
Answer: Sharp enough to chop wood. Not sharp enough to shave with.
Question: Any recommendations for a replacement hande? mine broke within the first few throws
Answer: Yeah, stick it in the wood and you won't break it ;). LOL sorry. I couldn't resist. I used a Truper 13" curved handle to replace the broken one I had. It took some custom fitting though because the eye of this axe is much smaller than most. Chances are, you'll have to do a lot of custom fitting anyways. If you want a straight handle, I think Stiletto makes a decent one. Just make sure it's hickory or ash.
Question: where can you buy the replacement handles
Answer: I have only recently purchased this axe. I have thrown it one time for about two hours. I hit bulls eyes and close to center consistently for two hours and rarely had the axe hit the ground. This axe is perfect for throwing. I had the same question you did regarding replacement handles and checked. It appears that cold steel does not make replacement handles for their axe that is designed to easily replace the handle. I did find whiskeyrivertrading dot com has hickory replacement handles for the coldsteel "gang axe", which visually looks about the same as for this axe. I have not pursued or looked further into detail. Look at the picture on this axes page with multiple cold steel axes and you will see what I am talking about. It is a few inches longer which can be cut off. I have not purchased, but did want to know where I can find a replacement. I first checked amazon, then looked at home depot, lowes, then did google searches. Their are other sites that have handles as well. I suspect cold steel will come out with a handle soon, but do not know for sure.
Question: will a standard cold steel axe handle fit it
Answer: Yes item H90AT for $9.99 on coldsteel.com will fit.

User questions & answers

Question: Where can you get a replacement handle to fit this? The ones that I am finding are different lengths than the original or the head size is way off
Answer: Sorry to be so long in responding. This is a felling axe and great at it, in part, because the cheek is shaped to allow easy passage through the cut wood. The hollow cheek, however, is the opposite of what you need to split wood. When getting the best, you will want to get a nice splitter to go with the axe. Hope this helps.
Question: Does it come with a cover for the blade
Answer: We do not offer 2nd grade products so any purchase from our stock is the standard Gransfors production. While we cannot speak for other Amazon Sellers no 2nd grade axes should be offered under this listing as 'New'. It's a different matter if a product is classified as 'Used - As New' or 'Used - Good' or 'Used - Acceptable', etc. but those would not be offered in the Buy Box. Hope this helps.
Question: Is it more of a splitting axe or felling axe
Answer: Hi Aldo, as much as we would like to answer your needs, I'm afraid it is not feasible in case of FBA Amazon Sellers like us. FBA stands for 'Fulfilled By Amazon', which means that ALL of our Gransfors Bruk stock is shipped to Amazon warehouses where all the orders are fulfilled directly by Amazon and we have no control over that part of fulfilment process. So it is impossible for us to know which actual axe would get picked by Amazon warehouse staff for your order. The same would go for the photos unfortunately. Amazon listings always show representative/general images as they serve ongoing supply of products from many Amazon sellers. They are not individual item listings. Moreover, these listings are property of Amazon and changing/adding description or photos is subject to Amazon's verification process, which takes time and frequently does not get accepted. Ordering Gransfors tools on Amazon - where goods are fulfilled by Amazon and shipped from Amazon warehouse - will always have a random element to it (regardless which FBA supplier you choose). You stand a better chance if you buy from an FBM supplier (Fulfilled by Merchant) and request their attention to detail including perhaps sending you photos of the actual axe they will be sending prior to shipment. But frankly, if perfection is of utmost importance - the only way is to go to a brick-and-mortar store and pick one out of the available selection on the shelf. However, you may find it difficult to achieve due to the current serious supply shortage of Gransfors tools. Of course, you can always take a chance and see if what you receive meets your satisfaction. If not, you can return it to Amazon within 30 days of Amazon Satisfaction Guarantee. I hope this helps. Best regards - Cary
Question: Where is it made
Answer: You can, any hardware store. The handles are universal except for the brand mark.

User questions & answers

Question: throw
Answer: No. It's actually a fantastic cut of meat
Question: Could this be used as an effective replacement for a hatchet and pickaroon? I know it won't be as good, but is it functional as that
Answer: It's from Australia and New Zealand =) Here's the quote from the company's FAQ: "Currently, PRE is sourced from select regions in Australia and New Zealand. These regions offer some of the best environmental conditions (rainfall & pasture quality) in the world for grass fed cattle raising. These countries also have the highest animal welfare standards in the world." Site address is Pre-brands.com
Question: Would this CS Frontier Hawk be a better home defense weapon for use inside and also better for use while woods walking (defense) than the CS Norse and/or Spike hawks
Answer: The back of the packaging compares it to USDA Choice. I'm going to guess it is equivalent to Choice.
Question: Is this good for scalping
Answer: Sam- Thank you for your question. A whole tenderloin is a long triangular shaped muscle. When cutting our filet mignon steaks, we trim the fat off first and remove a layer of tough collagen called the silver skin. We then cut off the end of the muscle, called the tenderloin tail, because it is a very thin piece of meat. The remaining barrel shape is cut into 5 oz steaks.Hope this helps!Best,The PRE Team
