12 best emergency water filtrations
Emergency water filtration systems are essential tools for ensuring access to safe drinking water in outdoor, camping, hiking, and emergency situations where clean water sources may be scarce or contaminated. These devices are designed to purify or filter water from natural sources, such as streams, rivers, lakes, or even questionable tap water, making it safe for consumption. Here are some key aspects of emergency water filtration:
Portability: Emergency water filtration systems are typically compact and lightweight, making them easy to carry in backpacks or include in emergency kits. This portability allows outdoor enthusiasts and emergency responders to access clean water on the go.
Filtration Methods:
- Mechanical Filtration: Many systems use mechanical filters, such as microfilters or hollow fiber membranes, to physically remove larger particles, bacteria, and protozoa from the water. These filters have defined pore sizes that block contaminants while allowing water to pass through.
- Chemical Treatment: Some systems utilize chemical treatments like chlorine dioxide tablets or iodine drops to kill or inactivate harmful microorganisms in the water. These chemicals are effective against bacteria, viruses, and protozoa.
- UV Sterilization: UV water purifiers use ultraviolet light to destroy the DNA of microorganisms, rendering them harmless.UV treatment is effective against bacteria, viruses, and some protozoa.
Capacity: The capacity of emergency water filtration systems varies, ranging from personal-sized devices for individual use to larger systems capable of purifying water for groups or families.
Speed: Filtration speed can vary between different products. Some filters provide a quick flow rate, while others may require more time to process the water. This is an important consideration when choosing a filtration system.
Maintenance: Proper maintenance is crucial to ensure the continued effectiveness of the filtration system. This may involve cleaning, replacing filter cartridges, or replenishing chemical treatment supplies as needed.
Compatibility: Emergency water filtration systems are often designed to be compatible with common water containers, such as water bottles, hydration bladders, or gravity bags. This makes it easier to collect and filter water.
Durability: These devices are typically built to withstand outdoor and rugged conditions, ensuring they remain functional in challenging environments.
Emergency Preparedness: In emergency situations like natural disasters or when traveling in remote areas, having an emergency water filtration system can be a lifesaver, as access to clean drinking water may be disrupted.
Testing and Certification: Many water filtration systems undergo testing and certification by relevant authorities or organizations to ensure their effectiveness in removing contaminants and making water safe to drink.
In summary, emergency water filtration systems are crucial tools for outdoor enthusiasts, campers, hikers, and emergency preparedness. They provide a reliable means of obtaining safe drinking water from potentially contaminated sources, helping to ensure hydration and overall well-being in challenging environments or during emergencies.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it filter sea salt water |
Answer: | Fresh water is considered to be any water source but salt water.0.01 Microns will remove just about anything including viruses. It will remove chlorine. Try to put intake hose below the algae using the floater.I would trust this filter in almost any fresh water source, except a pool of nothing but chemicals in it. |
Question: | How long is the shelf life |
Answer: | According to their literature, they filter down to 0.01 microns, which is 10 nanometers (billionth's of a meter). I looked up viruses, and viruses vary in size from 20 to 400 namometers. That means the smallest virus is twice the size of the holes it would have to fit through! In other words, NO viruses should be able to get through, however, it may be possible if it was very small and constricted somehow, or if there was a minor defect in the structure of the filter, so that's probably why they aren't claiming it's totally impossible for a virus to get through. |

User questions & answers
Question: | does it produce only h2o |
Answer: | Only thing I can find is on the sawyer website is the lifetime warranty so if you read it the will fix/replace the filter for life as long as you dont modify the filter in anyway or open the housing or run juice or drink mixes thru it they will replace it the 100,000 gallon guarantee is to tell you you will have it for life you will lose it beforeit breaks I hope I was of help you can find all the tech data sheets on there website |
Question: | Is the "ultra filter" just another name for hollow-fiber membrane filter? if not, what is the material in the "uf |
Answer: | You are right about the 2 ounces being the filter only-that is what Sawyer advertises. The entire unit, inside the packaging is 4.8 ounces. I cannot take it out to weigh the items outside the packaging as I would need to destroy the container to get them out. I am guessing the plastic covering weighs less than an ounce so the entire unit probably weighs about 4 ounces. |
Question: | Your literature says " removes contaminants from Fresh Water". What about algae covered ponds and swimming pools?s |
Answer: | This filter is advertised as up to 100,000 gallons by Sawyer. When you begin to notice a decrease in flow, I recommend back flushing with potable water using the included syringe. I normally keep an ounce or two of 90% isopropyl alcohol to sanitize the drinking tip and any tubes I may use when setting up different systems. After use and before long term storage (especially if you filtered a lot of biologically questionable water), it is recommended to run a sanitizing solution of bleach/water (1tbsp plain, unscented bleach to 1 gallon water) through the filter then rinse very well with potable water, shake out vigorously and allow to air dry for several days before capping and placing into storage. An unopened filter should have indefinite shelf life unless it is subjected to extreme temperatures, hot or cold. |
Question: | Does this filter viruses |
Answer: | Sawyer's claim for the filter is that it removes 99.99999% of all harmful bacteria and 99.9999% of protozoa. Viruses are not included nor are other impurities mentioned. I have written to Sawyer to ask about tannin and brackish water and will reply again once I receive a return message. I'm not sure when that will be, but hope it will be soon.Keri-LynnFour Seasons Survival |

Product description
A lightweight, versatile personal filtration system, the Sawyer MINI Water Filter fits in the palm of your hand and has a total field weight of just 2 ounces. Perfect for everything from camping with the kids to traveling abroad where tap and bottle water can't be trusted, the tiny MINI provides 0.1 micron absolute filtration for clean drinking water on the go — filtering out bacteria, protozoa, and microplastics. The MINI filter removes 7 log (99.99999%) of all bacteria (like salmonella) as well as other harmful bacteria which causes cholera and E. coli and 6 log (99.9999%) of all protozoa such as giardia and cryptosporidium. These removal rates equal or exceed other filter options. EPA guidelines allow ten times more protozoa left in the water than Sawyer MINI filters allow. The MINI also filters out 100% of microplastics. The MINI 0.1 micron absolute filter houses a cluster of micro-fibrous tubes which use similar technology found in medical dialysis. As water passes through the side walls of the tubes, harmful bacteria and protozoa are trapped on the outer walls so you can be confident your water is safe to drink. Great for outdoor recreation, hiking, camping, scouting, domestic and international travel, and emergency prepping, the Sawyer MINI gives you a number of ways to access clean water. Attach it to the included drinking pouch, use the included straw to drink directly from your water source, connect it to hydration pack tubing (sold separately), or screw it onto standard disposable bottles (28mm thread). Since 1984, Sawyer has used technological advancements to create products that keep you outdoors — from the backcountry to the backyard — including insect repellents for both skin and clothing, water filters for camping and emergencies, and sun protection.
- Ideal for outdoor recreation, hiking, camping, scouting, domestic and International travel, and emergency preparedness
- High-performance 0.1 Micron absolute inline filter fits in the palm of your hand and weighs just 2 ounces; 100% of MINI units individually tested three times to performance standards by Sawyer
- Attaches to included drinking pouch, standard disposable water bottles, hydration packs, or use the straw to drink directly from your water source
- Removes 99.99999% of all bacteria (salmonella, cholera, and E. coli); removes 99.9999% of all protozoa (such as giardia and cryptosporidium); also removes 100% of microplastics
- Filter rated up to 100,000 gallons; Includes one Sawyer MINI filter, 16-ounce reusable squeeze pouch, 7-inch drinking straw, and cleaning plunger
User questions & answers
Question: | Has the Sawyer Mini gone through End of Life testing in laboratories to ensure that it will ACTUALLY filter 100,000 gallons of water |
Answer: | NO. Tap water has minerlas, salts, bacteria, etc. These pills only kill bacteria but filter nothing. All the minerals will stay in the water and will break your machine. Use distilled water. |
Question: | What's the total weight of the full system? (Including the filter, tube, syringe, and pouch) It seems the listed 2 oz refers to the filter alone |
Answer: | The front of the package states"Proven effective against Giardia lamblia when used as directed". The back states "Potable Aqua Germicidal Tablets have not been shown to inactivate Cryptosporidium cysts." Keri-Lynn, Four Seasons Survival |
Question: | What is the shelf life for this? Used and properly cleaned or unopened |
Answer: | I called the company and they said unopened, they expire in Jan. 2017. When the bottles are opened, they expire in one year. The product has no expiration or mfg. dates on the bottles. |
Question: | Does this filter work with tannin in the water? Also, how about brackish water |
Answer: | "The colder the water, the less effective the chemical is as a purifying agent. Research has shown that at 50 degrees F (10 degrees C), only 90 percent of Giardia cysts were inactivated after 30 minutes of exposure. If the water temperature is below 40 degrees F (4 degrees C), double the treatment time before drinking. It is best if water is at least 60 degrees F (16 degrees C) before treating. You can place the water in the sun to warm it before treating." - Rick Curtis, The Backpacker's Field Manual.Basically, wait longer: double time every 10 degrees F under 60 to be safest. |

Sawyer's International Mission
Sawyer believes everyone deserves access to clean water — from hikers in the backcountry to indigenous people groups in the remotest corners of the world.
For over 10 years, Sawyer has been working with a variety of charities and churches who are on a mission to make a long-lasting impact in the lives of those around the world without access to clean drinking water.
Hollow Fiber Membrane
Sawyer’s water filters are comprised of tiny hollow fiber membranes that allow water to enter into their core through tiny micro-pores.
Thicker fiber walls combined with a smaller inner diameter make Sawyer fibers 75% stronger* than typical hollow fiber membranes, giving you a fast flow and enabling the filter to be continually backwashed forcefully to restore up to 98% of the original flow rate.
* Clean Water Institute of Calvin University; July, 2018
1 Absolute Micron Filtering
Each Sawyer water filter features 0.1 micron absolute filtration, meaning there is no pore size larger than 0.1 micron in size.
This makes it nearly impossible for microplastics, harmful bacteria, protozoa, or cysts like E. coli, Giardia, Vibrio cholerae, and Salmonella typhi (which cause Cholera and Typhoid) to pass through.
Fiber Protection
Sawyer's hollow fiber membranes are fully encased and sealed to keep them protected. When fibers are not enclosed, physical damage of exposed fibers could allow harmful pathogens to pass through.
Tested 3 Times
Every Sawyer filter is performance tested three different times during the manufacturing process for your protection.
Testing occurs after the fiber element construction and twice after casing assembly to ensure no harmful pathogens leak through the sealed case or internal O-rings.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a trick to getting clean water through this thing? Even Hulk Hogan couldn't squeeze hard enough as it is |
Answer: | The filter should be able to process a gallon of water in less than 10 minutes. Two fixes ... 1. There could be an air bubble trapped in the filter or tube, to remove it, unscrew the end cap that is attached to the tube and filter (make sure you do not get water on the drinking water outlet), then screw the cap tight again and test the flow. 2. Use the included backwashing syringe to clear the filter, there might be much debris from turbid water slowing your flow. |
Question: | Where is this product made |
Answer: | Our products are made designed in Switzerland and made in South Korea. |
Question: | Why does the initial filter last for 500 gallons but the replacement filter only lasts for 25 gallons? that seems like a ridiculous difference |
Answer: | There are two replacements for this product. The main membrane would still last for 500 gallons of water and then the carbon capsule is 25. These are two separate filters. |
Question: | Will this work for well water |
Answer: | It should work for any water source. Just know, the dirtier the water, the more often it needs to be replaced. Also, it is not made to filter large amounts if water, and it's very slow. |

Question: | Does this filter salt water |
Answer: | I work at a hospital and I'm on my feet for about 75% of the day and these shoes have been great! I used to have to wear gel insoles in my other shoes for extra padding but not with these. I also have chronic low back pain, but I find these shoes very supportive. I would recommend ordering 1/2 size up for the best fit. I usually wear a 7.5 but needed an 8 in these shoes. |

User questions & answers
Question: | are these bpa free |
Answer: | Yes, the buckets used for the Outback Emergency Filtration System are BPA FREE. |
Question: | Can the filters be stored long term if not used |
Answer: | The Outback filters have an indefinite shelf life if filters are left in original packaging and away from direct sunlight. |
Question: | Would this remove a bleach taste from water if I have bleach added to my stored water |
Answer: | Also, FYI--the Outback system can remove up to 6 ppm chlorine for up to 1,500 gallons. The higher the chlorine levels, the less overall chlorine removal capacity (in gallons) of the filter |
Question: | In an emergency could it filter my swimming pool water that is a salt water system |
Answer: | The Outback Plus system can filter water from pools treated by chlorine, but cannot filter out the sodium chloride in salt water pools. Removing salt from water typically requires a reverse osmosis system. If filtering chlorinated pool water, the multi-media filter will exhaust more quickly, due to the high chlorine levels in pools, and need to be replaced sooner than indicated. |

User questions & answers
Question: | EBOLA! if it mutates and gets in water supply, will this remove it |
Answer: | YES. The ebola virus is 0.08 microns in size. Almost no filter will remove this. BUT the LifeStraw Family filters to 0.02 microns, so yes ebola would be filtered out. That is if it mutates to survive in our water supply, which is unknown. |
Question: | Does it remove contaminants such as if we had nuclear fallout |
Answer: | "Food Grade Zeolite" a volcanic crystal powder, removes radiation and has been used in both Japan and Chernobyl to help absorb the radiation in the people around those nuclear disasters. Zeolite is easily mixed with food or water and taken, and 1 pound with last a family for quite some time. It was cooked into biscuits during Chernobyl and given to children, decreasing the amount or radiation in their bodies by about 60% with just one serving! The LifeStraw will get rid of the viruses and bacteria, and the Food Grade Zeolite will absorb the radiation and many other chemicals you could be exposed to ;-) |
Question: | I am pretty sure the answer is not but just need to hear it for myself. Will this work on seawater |
Answer: | It's pretty amazing, but it won't remove salt. Here's a link to a more in-depth review: http://www.portablewaterfilters.org/whats-new/lifestraw-family-1-0-review/ |
Question: | Is there a shelf life for this if it's unused |
Answer: | On the next packaging run, the shelf life comment will be removed. A short shelf life was stated on original packaging as the product was designed for the high temperatures and stress of the African environment. Stored in our homes here in the USA, there's nothing to cause the product to degrade or expire. Direct and constant sunlight will cause any plastic to eventually degrade, which is why the lifespan statement was developed. If you use it for camping and periodically use and store it, it's a good idea to flush it with tap water and allow it to dry before storing. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the filter replaceable |
Answer: | MSR is not selling a replacement filter only at this time. The main cost of this product is the filter cartridge, and it is packed in a sealed bag designed to keep the filter safe and fully ready to use after long term storage. - The MSR Customer Service Team |
Question: | Can this be used as the in line water filter system as well |
Answer: | Hi Michael, The MSR Home Water Filtration System for Emergencies and Disaster Preparedness uses exactly the same filter as the MSR Thru-Link Inline Filter. However, the male and female quick connect fittings are attached to sections of hose so you can connect the filter to a spigot. To use the Home Water Filtration System you'd have to remove the fittlings from the hose they're connected to and attach the to the hose of the hydration bladder you're going to use. The quick connect fittings are just pressure fitted inside the hose sections and can be pulled out of the hose, but it can sometimes be difficult to remove them. - The MSR Customer Service Team |
Question: | Will this work with hydration bladders |
Answer: | Hi Mark - This filter will not work with hydration reservoirs. There is another version of this filter called the MSR Thru-Link In-Line MicroFilter that uses the same filter cartridge and comes with quick connects to allow it to be connected to most most any hydration reservoir. - The MSR Customer Service Team |

User questions & answers
Question: | What are the dimensions of the bottle |
Answer: | Yes. The pump does not remove chemicals; acids, oil, gasoline, ect. It is best used in waters that have biological agent contamination; bacteria, viruses, amoeba, particulate matter. It cannot be used in salt water. |
Question: | is there any unusual taste to treated water and should it be filtered |
Answer: | We used the filter pump on a 4 day trip camping and it worked well, but it does take some effort to maintain your water supply as the pumping can take a while and be a little tedious. |
Question: | How many gallons of clean water will the bottle give |
Answer: | The only contaminants this product will remove are those with a physical size of .2 micron or greater. This is sufficient to remove bacteria and protozoa. It DOES NOT use any sort of active chemistry in the filtration process, therefore it cannot remove or neutralize any dissolved chemicals, viruses or heavy metals present in the water. Therefore, it is exceedingly unlikely that it would be of any use in a bioterrorism attack. |
Question: | Some reviews have stated that their product was old and expired. Are these new? And how long would they last in my BOB? Thank you |
Answer: | I would think you would order them front the manufacturer. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are replacement filters available |
Answer: | They ARE narrow. I want a wider size and according to the shoe size chart link, I wanted a 2E, not 4E Ultrawide, BUT Amazon Zappo's only stock the 'normal' Narrow and 4E Ultrawides. @WayneM, there is no 'half size larger' to select, apparently they don't pay attention to what people are buying and they don't bother to restock. I went ahead and ordered the D 'medium' which is actually very NARROW. The shoes came and they just fit me with the laces all the way stretched out. That said, I like them anyway - they're light and the sole is solid. The box only says size 10.5 and No width letter. And they don't show the width letter on the shoe's label either. Good shoe, not great sizing. So, Zappo's / Amazon has some work to do to avoid confusion and returns, just stock the medium wides, please. And start labeling the shoes better. |
Question: | What is the flow rate |
Answer: | I've been wearing them for walking for almost a year now. I started walking a few hundred yards a day last summer when I weighed 270 and by fall I was walking 6-8 miles a day! I am down to 190 and my asics venture 5s have finally begun to wear out. I normally wear orthotics but have never put them in the asics and my feet are just fine! As a side note I bought some new balance on sale a couple weeks ago and my feet immediately began to hurt! I am buying another pair of asics venture5s today! |
Question: | is the storage bag BPA free |
Answer: | These shoes kick A$$ and take names. These new Matt 5 running shoes are outta names now |
Question: | Is there any type of warranty for the product or filter |
Answer: | Yes! They have worked very well for me |
