13 best aurora survival fire starters
Aurora survival fire starters are popular tools used in outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, and survival situations. These fire starters are designed to help you easily ignite a fire, which can be essential for cooking, providing warmth, and signaling for help in emergency situations. Here are some key features and information about Aurora survival fire starters:
Ferrocerium Rod: Aurora survival fire starters typically consist of a ferrocerium rod, which is the key component for creating sparks. This rod is made from a combination of iron, cerium, and other metals, and it produces a high-temperature spark when scraped.
Striker: To ignite the fire starter, you need a striker or scraper. This is often integrated into the design of the fire starter, and it's used to create sparks when struck against the ferrocerium rod.
Compact and Portable: Aurora survival fire starters are designed to be compact and lightweight, making them easy to carry in your camping or survival gear. Many models come with a keychain or lanyard hole for convenient attachment to your gear.
Waterproof: Many Aurora fire starters are waterproof or water-resistant, which is crucial for ensuring their reliability in damp or rainy conditions. This feature makes them ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who may encounter wet weather.
Durable Construction: These fire starters are built to withstand rugged outdoor conditions. They are often made from high-quality materials that resist corrosion and wear.
Multi-Functional: Some Aurora fire starters come with additional features, such as built-in compasses, whistles, or tinder storage compartments. These added functionalities can be valuable in survival situations.
Ease of Use: Aurora fire starters are relatively easy to use. You simply scrape the striker against the ferrocerium rod to generate sparks, which can ignite dry tinder or fuel.
Safety Considerations: While fire starters are valuable tools, it's essential to use them safely. Keep them away from children, and be cautious when striking sparks to avoid any accidents.
In summary, Aurora survival fire starters are reliable tools for starting fires in outdoor and survival scenarios. They are designed to be compact, durable, and often include additional features to enhance their utility. These fire starters are a must-have for any camping, hiking, or outdoor adventure enthusiast.

User questions & answers
Question: | Will the winter blend still be effective in summer months with 90 degree temps |
Answer: | The Trekker fire starter is made to be used in most weather conditions. Making a fire in direct rain is nearly impossible. So, if you have some shelter, and only damp or wet tinder - use a good quantity of scraped magnesium. This gives an initial 5000 degree burst of heat. This can allow you to get a fire started where a ferrocerium rod alone may fail. My wife and I have lit fires in damp or wet conditions. Also read the most popular Fire-Fast Trekker review. |
Question: | How big are the tins because i read a review that there is only enough for one fire |
Answer: | Yes, the handle is made of African hard wood. The wood contains resin that makes it water resistant - we did a test where the fire starter was submerged in water for 4 days and successfully lit a fire within 30 seconds after coming out of the water. Also the handle wood can be scraped and used as tinder - even after being soaked in water for 4 days! At times we have purchased an entire tree and the wood color varies from tan to deep red. Also the edge wood looks like oak - so sometimes there is a "calico" effect where the red color is next to the oak color. |
Question: | how long is this putty viable for? How long will it stay good in storage |
Answer: | No, it's long lasting, but they cant be replaced. |
Question: | Any idea what the shelf life is on this product |
Answer: | 6 1/2" |

Gather some kindling (such as dry grass, pine needles, small twigs) and some tinder (such as small branches, pine cones, bark).
Step 2
Use serrated edge of striker to shave some magnesium from the rod onto your pile of tinder. Keep shavings closely piled together for best results.
Step 3
Use smooth edge of striker to forcefully strike rod several times in order to release a stream of sparks aimed at the magnesium pile until it ignites.
Step 4
Gently blow on the flame and start feeding it with kindling and larger branches until you have a full-fledged fire.

User questions & answers
Question: | how loud is the whistle? dB |
Answer: | My experience with this rod is you cannot scrape off bits of rod material like the inexpensive fire starters you can get at Harbor Freight. BUT... you do not need to. Striking this rod produces some very strong and hot sparks. I have had no problems starting a fire by striking sparks into a cotton ball coated with petroleum jelly. |
Question: | How does it start the fire |
Answer: | Yes. Ferrocerium rod is made from Iron, Magnesium and mostly of an alloy of rare earth metals called mischmetal with an excellent pyrophoric percentage : 98%min. |
- SIMPLE, YET OVERKILL— Zero fail points. Above & beyond is exactly what we strive for. Extreme dependability, in every situation. Overkill is never a bad thing. Especially when life may depend on it.
- BEST FERRO BLEND, PERIOD — Überleben’s Sånft-korr ferrocerium is the perfect balance between softness & durability, consistently outperforming the leading fire starters. Easily throw a 5,500ºF shower of molten sparks in any weather (waterproof), at any altitude.
- MULTIPLE SIZE OPTIONS — Available in 5” length and 8" length, version will easily yield 20,000+ strikes. Probably more. This isn’t our lightest ferro rod, but it’s probably our best.
- SHOCK-CORD LANYARD — Allows for multiple securing options, and flex-versatility when striking. Includes Multi-tool striker (straight-edge spine, concave tinder scraper, map scale, ruler, hex wrench… and most importantly, bottle opener).
- HASSLE FREE GUARANTEE — If you’re not stoked, we’re not stoked. You shouldn’t pay for something you don’t love. If for any reason you’re not absolutely thrilled with your Kräftig, let us know. We’ll fix it.
User questions & answers
Question: | Is this a mishmetal firesteel |
Answer: | Yep. Just another term for ferrocerium! :) |
Question: | Is this a soft or hard ferrorod |
Answer: | Very soft |
Question: | Why am I having so much trouble finding the 8 inch model |
Answer: | Hi John, we are currently out of stock on our Kraftig 8. As soon as we can, we will be restocking. Thank you for your patience! |
Question: | I'm new to learning about survival fire starters. are ferro rods easier to use than magnesium? i'm teaching my 6&9 yr old granddaughter & grandson |
Answer: | Both of my oldest daughters (ages 6 and 9 also) can start fires with the Kräftig & Zünden fire starters fairly easily now (both by Ãberleben). Like any "skill" there's a small learning curve, I suppose, but otherwise it's pretty easy -- especially with a little practice, and a larger ferro rod like the Kräftig. They do have a little more trouble using the Ãberleben Leicht neck fire starter, which is extremely small.... more of a emergency backup. But thats more of an advanced ferro rod. They should have good luck with anything larger! Any issues, let us know! :) |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do you use the striker? With the saw teeth? The tip |
Answer: | I use the back side of the striker with the sharpest 90 degree edge. The black coating on the ferro rod needs to be completely scrapped off to produce adequate sparks. Wrap 6-8 layers of 1/2 inch wide duct tape on one end of the ferro rod to provide a better grip on the rod. Use firm pressure throughout the strike to produce the best spark. |
Question: | How many sticks of fat wood come with this kit |
Answer: | The tin is full with fat wood sticks approx 15 in my kit .. you will be happy with this purchase. |
Question: | What is the difference with I see another kit with a knife and so on? Love the youtube video and want to get one of these. The kit is the same seller |
Answer: | The only difference in the kits or items is the different need it satifies. The fatwood is the same in the different products, just cut in different sizes. I have purchased three items from this seller. This kit is a complete and very compact fire starting kit which I keep in my Jeep. I purchased the ferro rod mounted in the rifle casing to carry in my backpack while hiking. I also purchased the ammo can full of fatwood to start fires in my home fireplace. They all work great to satisfy the different needs I have! |
Question: | Does a ranger band (pictured) actually come with the kit |
Answer: | M. HerboldThank you for your email. Yes the ranger band comes with the fire starting kit.Steve |
User questions & answers
Question: | What do you suggest for the striker? The back of a pocket knife? Can a hard stone be used? What type of "striker" does this need |
Answer: | I wouldn't use the back of a pocket knife. It could close on you at the wrong time. OUCH! Some still advocate using a knife's blade as a striker. A little tough on the blade but an effective striker, nonetheless. If I only had a pocket knife, I'd use its (sharp side of the) blade as a striker. Ideally, you'd have and would use the back of a fixed blade knife or a dedicated (store bought or home made) striker. This striker is drilled. Attach a lanyard & a small striker & it'll always be ready to go. |
Question: | What does Each rod weigh |
Answer: | The weight of one 1/2" x 5" ferro rod is approx 115g. |
Question: | Is this ferrocerium all throughout the bar? I’ve seen some where the core is just steel and only a thin outer layer will make a spark |
Answer: | I could be wrong but I think you might be having a problem with smooth pressure if you use a knife with a sharp spine you will have more leverage to apply the pressure I don't think any ferro rod has a solid steel bar inside they all should spark all the way through some are softer than others though and I think the softer ones have more magnesium this one is hard |
Question: | they" recommend the use of a "art knife" as a striker -- what is a art knife |
Answer: | Don't know what an art knife is but THE BEST thing i have found to use for a striker is a 3 inch piece of either a hack saw blade or sawzall blade, use the edge of the SMOOTH side of the blade at a slight angle (press against it hard). practice with it you'll get it,, and it will shower sparks !!! |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do you change the flint |
Answer: | Use a mini screwdriver (eyeglass screwdriver) to take out the set screw. Be careful as there is a spring inside. Take out the remnants of the old ferro rod, insert new ferro rod, the spring and then put the set screw back in. You can see it all on our Outdoor Element YouTube channel. The back of the package also shows you how. I will try to include a link to the video in the next message. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What material is the body made from |
Answer: | The body is made from titanium-coated stainless steel. |
Question: | What size screw holds the flint in |
Answer: | I took a measurement and it "appears" to be either a #6 (SAE) or M3.5 (Metric) screw size from the .138" measured diameter. I have not verified that with a thread gauge though |
Question: | whats life time of fire starter ? 1 year or 2 years or |
Answer: | Each ferro rod can spark around 3,000 times. The Firebiner has one ferro rod installed already and comes with 2 replacements. So, this will last a long time, even if you are a serious fidgeter. Some have called this the outdoor fidget spinner. And, as mentioned, you can order more ferro rods for cheap on the website. |
Question: | What's the holding capacity? In terms of weight |
Answer: | The newer ones are rated at 100 lbs (45 kg) however there is a slight amount of flex in the metal. I wouldn't put more than 50 lbs on it as 100 lbs is too close to the yield strength IMHO. |

Question: | Is the paracord flammable |
Answer: | Paracord will burn. It is a common practice to burn the ends after a cut. |
Question: | how do you remove the knife |
Answer: | The knife is small but if you use a pare of pliers it will come straight out |
Question: | Will this clear TSA at the airports |
Answer: | First off, I love testing my limits so I've brought tons of things I know I shouldn't have brought with me but just try and get passed tsa lol I'm surprised I'm not on some kind of watch list lmao between knives, extending batons, and even similar measly survival cords/kits. You would have about a 10% chance at being stopped but the agent would have to be a special kind of person make a big ordeal over something that "could be used as a weapon" instead of being looked at as a tool for survival and at that point just toss it out and keep the backup/extra cord in your luggage, or just mail it to yourself if you have or know of your next/temp address. If you'd like to know more about pretty much everything, and if I don't know, give me a few mins to research. I've learned 10x more info with every 10 mins on YouTube or google than any teacher or professor has in an entire year. But please do message me on here if you're able to or not, if not then other means of communication |
