12 best reptile aquarium kit
A reptile aquarium kit, often referred to as a reptile terrarium kit, is a comprehensive package designed to provide a suitable habitat for pet reptiles and amphibians. These kits are convenient for both beginners and experienced reptile enthusiasts, as they typically include the essential components needed to create a comfortable and secure environment for reptile pets. Here's what you can expect to find in a typical reptile aquarium kit:
Terrarium or Aquarium Tank: The centerpiece of the kit is the enclosure itself. It can vary in size depending on the type and size of reptile you plan to keep. These tanks are typically made of glass or acrylic and come in various shapes and sizes to accommodate different species.
Substrate: Reptile kits often include a substrate or bedding material suitable for the specific reptile species. Substrates can vary from sand and gravel for desert reptiles to coconut fiber or moss for tropical species.
Heating and Lighting: Proper temperature and lighting are crucial for reptile health. Kits usually include heat sources like heat lamps or heating mats to create the necessary temperature gradients within the terrarium. They also provide UVB lighting for reptiles that require it for vitamin D synthesis.
Decor and Hideouts: Reptiles need places to hide and explore. Kits often include decorative elements such as rocks, branches, caves, and plants that not only serve as hiding spots but also enhance the terrarium's aesthetics.
Water and Food Dishes: You'll find water and food dishes designed specifically for reptile use. These are typically easy to clean and secure to prevent tipping.
Thermometers and Hygrometers: To monitor temperature and humidity levels inside the terrarium, kits may include thermometers and hygrometers.
Substrate Scoop or Tongs: Some kits come with tools like scoops or tongs to make cleaning and maintaining the terrarium easier.
Care Guide: Many reptile kits include a care guide or manual that provides information on the specific needs of the reptile species you plan to keep, including dietary requirements, temperature and humidity recommendations, and other care instructions.
It's important to note that the contents of a reptile aquarium kit can vary depending on the brand and the specific species it is designed for. Before purchasing a kit, research the specific requirements of the reptile or amphibian you intend to keep to ensure that the kit includes everything necessary for their well-being. Additionally, while kits are convenient, you may still need to purchase additional items or customize the habitat to meet your pet's unique needs.

User questions & answers
Question: | I don't want to use for an animal/insect so can the mesh be removed from the lid just leaving the screen to use as cover? Thanks |
Answer: | Yes, i have 1 i use just as a planted terarrium for cacti and i have the top removed so the plants can grow without hitting the top. |
Question: | will this terrarium work for a bearded dragon |
Answer: | No. Bearded Dragons grow very fast and a juvenile would outgrow any of these tank sizes within a year. I learned the hard way and had to buy a couple of tanks in the first year I got mine. A long 20 gallon terrarium accommodated her for maybe 6-8 months and after that I upgraded her to a 50 gallon. The basking rock, food dish and water dish (which they love) take up a lot of space too so that's something to consider also. |
Question: | Regarding the exo terra mini (Wide) what are the dimensions of the bottom underneath the door? Looking to make the bottom part a "tank |
Answer: | Roughly 4 - 4.5 inches |
Question: | Would this tank (12x12x12) be good for a baby corn snake? Or would the next size up be better |
Answer: | I would recommend the 18x18x18. Something I've been told is that your snake tank should be at least as long as your snake. He might be a baby now, but in another 6-12 months, the 12x12x12 is gonna be too small and you'll have to buy a new one. |

Question: | Soon to be new ball python owner! Got the 36 x 18. What light should I get with it |
Answer: | Hey Kristen, I have the 36x24 (my bp likes to climb), so you may be able to use one combo dome with higher watt bulbs or use two combo domes with lower watt bulbs. I use two "Zoo Med Mini Combo Deep Dome Lamp Fixtures" using 2 "Exo Terra Night-Glo Moonlight 75 Watt" and 2 "Exo Terra Daytime Heat Lamp 100 Watt". Because I'm out of the house most of the time, I use the "Zilla 11893 24/7 Digital Timer Power Center, 1875-Watt" to automatically switch between day lighting and night lighting. In order to make sure the terrarium doesn't get over heated in my absence I also use the "Zilla 11939 Temperature Controller, 1000-Watt" which cuts the lights off/on depending on temperature. I also keep moist towels on top of the cool side of the terrarium to keep the humidity up (heat lights dry up all the moisture otherwise). I know that's a lot more info then you were asking for, but I figured it might help. Also, be careful with the Exo Terra Terrarium when you open the doors. Make sure your snake isn't near where the door hinges or it might get lodged in the gap as mine did. Have fun... bp's make great pets! - Eric |
Question: | how many gallons is it |
Answer: | 33 |
Question: | Is this a kit or just the tank |
Answer: | Just the tank with a foam background. |
Question: | Can the bottom glass be removed? Im looking to modulate this to an existing 40gallon feeder tank |
Answer: | No, not to my knowledge. I have 5 Exo terra tanks and it doesn't seem you can. |

Whether you're an experienced hobbyist or just starting out, Tetra has everything you need–-from a large variety of quality fish food and innovative equipment to test kits and decor. User questions & answers
Question: | Is it possible to order replacement parts for this? Specifically for the double filter chamber...mine has been broken since I received it 3 years ago |
Answer: | I called the manufacturing company a few months ago because I needed a new cover for one of the filters (mine was missing one when I inherited it from work). They weren't able to replace it, but the help line was really easy to navigate and they were very nice. I recommend calling the manufacturers. |
Question: | I can't figure out how it filters because there nothing's moving the water through the filters. How is it filtering |
Answer: | The pump kind of pulls the water through the filters and the stones, it doesn't seem like it would filter much but I have had this for 2 years in a 55 gallon tank with a turtle, Algae eater and a few fish and it's amazing. I've never had to clean the tank and the water is crystal clear. |
Question: | What happen if i pass the max line |
Answer: | Going past the max line will result in the pre filtered water and the filtered water mixing together - you also wouldn't have a dry land area. |
Question: | I have one in my 20 gal tank. Love it. But want to move turt to a 40 gal tank and cant figure out what to do to make it fit. Can anyone explain |
Answer: | The tank has to be 12 inches deep, front to back. Mine is in a 40 gal tank so you must have a 40 gal high? My tank has the same dimensions as a 55 gal tank but the 55 is taller. |

Question: | My turtle lives in a Koi pond by herself, the pond holds 125 gal. but we only fill it half full about 60 gal. how much water conditioner should I put |

User questions & answers
Question: | is it good for frogs |
Answer: | Absolutely. My daughter has a small American toad that’s very happy in this cage. We placed bedding on the bottom section and a water bowl. Frog couldn’t be happier. |
Question: | Can two year old red ear slider use this |
Answer: | I don't think any turtle with a shell longer than 3 inches would be very comfortable in this habitat. We have a baby turtle the size of a half dollar and it's perfect for it. We will adjust the size of the habitat as our turtle grows and use this tank to keep him in it while we clean. |
Question: | How deep is this? Is it deep enough that my turtle can't climb out |
Answer: | Our red eared slider is just a baby!! Maybe the size of a silver dollar!! He cannot climb out due to his size and the sides are slick. We bought this just as a temporary home till he grows!!! It seems so happy on the tank, cool! |
Question: | Would a baby sulcata tortoise fit |
Answer: | I have. 3.5 month old baby Eastern Hermann turtle. Yes it fit and but is really active. |

●Box turtle(Diet: Varied diet of vegetables, fruits, insects. Can be different depending on specific species.)
●Razor-backed musk turtle(Diet: Commercial pellets, insects, worms, fish.)
●Painted turtle(Diet: Commercial pellets, romaine, dandelion, parsley, gryllidae, worms, guppies.)
On-the-Go Design
With compact design, even a little girl could bring the tank easily whatever she want : )
UV Light
Comes with professional UV light-bulb which provides pinpointed light and heat to reptiles, helps a turtle produce vitamin D3 required to metabolize calcium for a strong shell and other nutrients vital to his health. Too little UV exposure results in metabolic bone disease, stunted shell growth and premature death.
We suggest you to leave the UV light on your turtle 3 hours per day (too long time with dehydrate your turtle.) If you go the "no UVB bulb" route, you may want to consider some regularly-scheduled outdoor time for your turtles.
LCD Thermometer
Comes with a thermometer which is very easy to use to help you keep a comfortable temperature for your pets.
Turtles Have Shells But They Still Need a Place to Hide!
Even though their shells are often hard, and offer excellent camouflage – imagine a box turtle on a forest floor or a leopard tortoise among brush – most turtles become quite stressed if denied a secure place to hide. Even bold, long-term captives prefer a shelter, at least for sleeping.
Particularly retiring species, such as mata mata, bog and Malayan snail-eating turtles, will Snapping Turtle often fail to thrive if kept in bare surroundings.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this good for a chemleaon |
Answer: | It would be good for a baby chameleon. However, it is hardly bigger than a shoebox standing upright. |
Question: | How many inches tall is the glass in between the feet of the terrarium and the front vents |
Answer: | I measured on the outside of terrarium. It measured 1.5" from bottom of glass to the vents on the trim below the opening door. Hope this helps. |
Question: | Would this be good for hermit crabs |
Answer: | No, you need at the very least a 10 gallon for a small hermit. Add another 10-15 for each subsequent hermit depending on size. You also need substrate going up at least 3/4 of the tank since it will settle, the door makes it impossible to house a hermit. I highly suggest going to the page Hermit Crab Owners on Facebook. They are not beginner pets by any means. |
Question: | Would this terrarium be appropriate for small spiders |
Answer: | I would say that depends on the type of spider. My daughter had an arboreal tarantula, so the 'tall' terrarium worked very well. But for a terrestial tarantula I'd go with a longer, shorter terrarium. |

User questions & answers
Question: | would this be a good basking spot for a red-eared slider |
Answer: | This is not designed to hold water. Please contact us at 1-888-255-4527 and we can offer assistance. |
Question: | Would this be good for a Savannah |
Answer: | It would be too small |
Question: | Will this work for a created geco |
Answer: | The size will for a juvenile up to about 6 months of age when it will need a larger habitat. That said, Geckos are tropical so the tropical starter kit would be a better choice |
Question: | would this be good for a bearded dragon |
Answer: | It would be fine for a small bearded dragon, but how big do they get? It's the standard glass aquarium you see for all small land and water animals. Ours is holding a baby snake, so we'll have to move up in size once it grows. Make sure you're distinguishing between the tropical model vs the desert model. The tropical one includes one heat lamp, with a daylight bulb, and an under-aquarium heat pad. There is no night/UVB bulb, or dome. The desert model includes two dome lamps with day and night bulbs, but no under-aquarium heat pad. So choose according to which items a bearded dragon needs most. The only other difference is the color of the bottom covering--one is sand colored and one is green. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you take off the lid |
Answer: | Yes, you can. It's actually a great set up. My son has 2 small turtles in it and loves it. |
Question: | Can you use this for bearded dragons too |
Answer: | The tank and lighting would work well for a bearded dragon, yes. The other items that come with it are more designed for turtles though. If you would like more help, email petsupport@spectrumbrands.com. |
Question: | Can i add some schooling fish in the tank too |
Answer: | Thank you for asking a question, Voon Huang Chyuan! This tank can be filled with water and used as a fish tank, if you wish to do so. Fish added to tanks containing turtles, however, will most likely be eaten unless they can blend into the decor. Additionally, turtles are extremely dirty animals, and fish may not do well, health-wise, in a turtle tank. |
Question: | Why does my turtle water get algue so quikly... Help |
Answer: | This is a GREAT question, Eduardo V.! I am so glad you asked, because it is all about the proper environment and care for the turtle! First, a turtle requires a minimum of 10 gallons of water for every inch of shell diameter. So a 5 inch turtle, for example, requires a tank with 50 gallons of water in it. Second, they require a partial water change of at least 25% (1/4) once a week. Third, they require a lot of filtration. The tank and filter pictured here, for example, is suitable for hatchling turtles up to about 2." in size. A hatchling is the diameter of a quarter to give you an idea. It's a great starter tank for baby turtles, and if you are diligent about care, can work for about a year to a year and a half. Adult turtles of 5" or more should be housed in tanks of 75 gallons or larger, with their water filtered by large canister filters. Algae accumulates due to an over abundance of waste. This can also be due to the diet that that is being fed. Turtles have nutritional needs, just like any other animal, and lettuce, hamburger, goldfish, etc., are not included in those needs. Feed a diet such as http://a.co/5an1oLn, which has been formulated specifically through much research for turtles, with a reduction in waste in mind as well. This food comes in Baby, Juvenile, and Adult formulations to meet a turtle's dietary needs at different stages of their life. It has been proven to reduce the amount of waste and odor the turtle produces. Please let me know if you have any other questions! My email is PHGAmazon@spectrumbrands.com. |

Make this great tank a feature piece in your home.
Your kit includes all the essentials
Along with a 20 gallon glass aquarium, this tank includes a Tetrafauna(R) Decorative ReptoFilter(R) with three cartridges, Tetrafauna Turtle Terrace basking platform, a boxwood plant mat and a screen top with locking clips.
Heating
2- 5.5" dome lamps, a 60 watt heating bulb and a 13 watt 5.0 UVB bulb.
Take a closer look at the Decorative ReptoFilter:
Instantly create a beautiful waterfall and basking area for newts, frogs and turtles in any aquarium up to 55 gallons. The integrated three-stage Whisper filtration uses easily replaceable medium ReptoFilter cartridges (3-pack included) and keeps water clear and odor-free. Large intake holes prevent clogging and the cover keeps animals out while providing an ideal area for basking.
Step 1: Clean
Begin by cleaning out your tank with tap water (do not use soap or chemicals on aquarium or plants).
Step 2: Rinse
Rinse the Decorative ReptoFilter unit and place in the rear corner of the aquarium. Rinse gravel thoroughly until water runs clear, then add to aquarium bottom. Next, rinse the basking platform and any plants or decorations and arrange as desired.
Step 3: Add Water
Add tap water so that the water level falls between the minimum and maximum fill lines marked on the back of the Decorative ReptoFilter. The water level should be below the top of the basking platform. Add water conditioner to remove the chlorine from the tap water before adding pets.
Step 4: Add Heat and Light
Finally, install the 60-Watt incandescent bulb into one of the dome lamps included. Place lamp in screen above the basking platform. Install the UVB bulb in the other lamp and position on the screen top above the basking area.

Exo Terra Natural Terrarium - Advanced Reptile Habitat, Low 24" x 18" x 12"
These low sizes (12” or 30 cm) are ideal for ground dwelling reptile and amphibians. Especially desert reptile species benefit from these lower sizes as the ultraviolet and heat bulbs are even closer to the animal.
The 3 new lower sizes are specially designed for desert set-ups, since most desert species are ground dwellers and do not move vertically. Although very similar in shape and size as the “aquarium-type” tanks, these new versions have all the great features of the typical Exo Terra terrarium. Three new sizes: PT2603 Natural Terrarium Small - Low 18”x18”x12” PT2604 Natural Terrarium Medium - Low 24”x18”x12”
PT2611 Natural Terrarium Large - Low 36”x18”x12”
