It is used for that purpose which if something is blocking the ir receiver on the front of the set, this emitter can be placed by adhesive some where in clear view for the remote to fire at. The did not fail dramatically they just slowly became less and less sensitive. Find another source such as Jameco in California or Digikey. There are tons of how-tos on the web for the problem you want to solve. Use a search engine with the phrase "building an ir remote" and go from there.
