13 best paste wood fillers

Paste wood fillers are a type of product commonly used in woodworking and home improvement projects to fill in gaps, cracks, holes, and imperfections in wooden surfaces. They are a crucial part of the finishing process, as they help create a smooth and seamless appearance on wooden surfaces before painting, staining, or varnishing. Here are some key aspects of paste wood fillers:

  1. Composition: Paste wood fillers are typically made from a combination of wood fibers or sawdust and a binder. The binder can be water-based, solvent-based, or oil-based, depending on the specific product.

  2. Types: There are different types of wood fillers available, each suited for specific applications. For example, water-based wood fillers are easy to clean up and are suitable for interior projects, while oil-based fillers provide a durable finish and are often used for exterior applications.

  3. Color Matching: Many paste wood fillers come in various colors or can be tinted to match the color of the wood you're working with. This helps achieve a seamless blend with the surrounding wood.

  4. Application: Paste wood fillers are applied using a putty knife or a similar tool. You spread the filler into the gaps or imperfections, ensuring it's level with the surface. It's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions for drying and sanding times.

  5. Sanding: After the wood filler has dried, it should be sanded smooth to create a flush and even surface. This step is crucial for achieving a professional finish.

  6. Painting or Staining: Once the filler is sanded smooth, you can proceed with painting, staining, or varnishing the wood as desired. The filled areas should blend seamlessly with the rest of the surface.

  7. Interior vs. Exterior Use: Some paste wood fillers are specifically formulated for indoor use, while others are designed to withstand outdoor conditions. Make sure to choose the right type for your project to ensure durability.

  8. Drying Time: The drying time for paste wood fillers can vary depending on the product and environmental conditions. It's essential to allow the filler to dry completely before moving on to the next steps in your project.

  9. Cleanup: Water-based fillers are relatively easy to clean up with water, while solvent-based fillers may require specific solvents for cleanup. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleanup.

  10. Safety: When working with wood fillers, it's essential to wear appropriate safety gear, including eye protection and gloves, and work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes.

In summary, paste wood fillers are versatile products used to repair and enhance the appearance of wooden surfaces in various woodworking and home improvement projects. User questions & answers

Question: Did anyone try to stain this with color? Does it blend

Question: can dye or colorant be mixed in before application
Answer: It is pink before it dries, so don't see how you could pre mix the dye
Question: I need to repair a pine table, but will only be sanding and waxing it -- will the white show? Is this only for use on something to be stained or paint
Answer: The white will show...I don't recommend it for what you need. Good luck!
Question: I bought a container about two years ago, and its a little stiff. can it be thined out to make it softer. what can i thin it with. thank you
Answer: Thank you for contacting Elmer's. You could add a little water to thin out the product. We would be unable to determine how well the product will work because the product does have a 2 year shelf life. Thanks, Newell Brands Office Products

Old Masters

Based on 91 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Woodgrain Filler is natural in color, but is best used when intermixed with a solvent-based wood stain to obtain desired colors. If no color is desired, we suggest using a \"natural\" stain. SURFACE PREPARATION: All surfaces must be clean, dry and free from dirt, wax or grease. Bare Wood: If persistent wax exists, remove with fine steel wool saturated with paint thinner or alcohol. Surface must be lightly sanded and sanding dust removed. Previously Finished Surfaces: Strip the surface completely down to bare wood with paint or varnish remover, making sure all previous finishes are removed. Surface must be sanded smooth and sanding dust removed. Sets up in 5 to 15 minutes. Thoroughly dry in approximately 4 hours.

  • Designed to fill the pores of open-grain woods and help to achieve a smooth finish
  • For interior use on open grain woods such as oak, ash and mahogany
  • Natural in color, but best when mixed with oil-based wood stain to match desired wood tones
  • Mix with wood stain with a 2 parts filler to 1 part wood stain ratio
  • Covers 125 square feet per quart

User questions & answers

Question: Is this filler stainable
Answer: I use the filler after I stain the wood and under certain circumstances I add stain to the filler.
Question: Yes, I see it is for oak, mohogany etc But just wondering how it how it would do on something like pine or ash or birch??? Any recommendations
Answer: I use it on mahogany for guitars. A rather wide grain, however I know this is of very high quality and i would expect you would get good results on a finer grain wood such as your three listed
Question: Does this have bad fumes
Answer: This product itself does not have bad fumes. However, if you mix it with an oil based stain you will have the oder of the stain you use.
Question: How would I use this proud if I wanted to paint? Can I apply without thinning? I would apply full strength let dry then prime w/ shella
Answer: While it can be thinned. I use it as is. Usually on Mahogany , Walnut or Rosewood.. I use a paint brush to apply all over the surface I am working on. One surface at a time.. Then as it hazes over in about 10 to 15 minutes. I scrape it off with a rubber edged drywall spreader. across the grain.. (Not with the grain. It will pull out the filler if you scrape with the grain) I put all scraped material back in the can and add a bit of wood grain filler thinner for future use. Then I use the green Brillo pads on a random orbit sander to polish the wood grain filler smooth.. Then add what ever kind of alcohol based tincture dye the surface. (oil stains will rewet and remove the filler) Then follow with several coats of precat vinyl sealer. Then top coat with pre cat lacquer. Good luck.. But then.. I rebuild Steinway pianos.. The extra effort is required for a perfect finish..

User questions & answers

Question: Do this product work with laminate kitchen cabinets?! I want to fill in the 70s door designs and make it flat; I’ll than paint over it
Answer: This product is used to repair holes, dents, scratches, and defects on wood, wallboard, molding or painted surface.
Question: What color is it
Answer: This wood filler is color beige.
Question: What color does it dry
Answer: Same color as when it's wet, tan or light wood color
Question: Is this shapable like a putty or is this more of a liquid
Answer: It is shapable like a putty. It doesn't dry so quick so have to work real fast with it. It doesn't take a long time either though once you've applied it for it to dry enough to sand it although I try to leave it drying overnight. It's one of the best wood fillers on the market in my opinion.

User questions & answers

Question: I have old polyurethaned oak cabinets. Do I clean, sand prime cabinets first then apply aqua coat or is the process reversed
Answer: The most successful process for refinishing your cabinets with Aqua Coat Grain Filler would be as follows. 1 We highly recommend you do this process completely to the end on the back of a drawer to help you assure success. 2 Sand with 220 grit sand paper. Wipe down with a dampwater paper towel or old t-shirt. Do not use tack rags. they contain oils or wax 3 De gloss 4 On your sample drawer back, apply 2 coats of Aqua Coat Grain Filler with a credit card. bondo blade, rag for curves. Lightly sanding with a 320-400 grit paper in between coats. You are not sanding it down, you are not sanding it off, the only reason you sand is to form a better bond between coats. Only sand immediately before applying the next coat. 5 for testing purposes On half of this drawer back apply a third coat. When you have completely gone through the testing process you will be able to decide if you need 2 or 3 coats. Lightly sand 3rd coat with 320-400 immediately before applying primer. 6 Apply 2 coats of a high build primer water based, oil based, solvent based 7 Apply 2 coats of a quality paint. water based. oil based, solvent based To save an immense amount of time we highly recommend going completely through the testing process to see if you need 2 coats or 3 and have confidence in your process.
Question: Have you had any problems when filling in deeper gouges or chip out? I have used another product and it left the areas white when it dried
Answer: If you left areas white then you applied it to thick. It is a pore and grain filler. Not a deep gouge filler. If you would like to touch up deeper indentations add a little sawdust from the piece you are working on to the grain filler.
Question: How do i apply material
Answer: I've used this on several guitars (including mahogany, spruce, padauk, bubinga). After sanding, I apply any stain I might want. Usually, I just use Minwax natural to add depth with not much color. I follow that with a coat of Zinsser Wax Free Seal Coat, diluted 50:50 with denatured alcohol. After a light sanding I do 2 or 3 coats of Aquacoat, using either a motel keycard as a spatula or just rub it in while wearing nitrile gloves, making sure to wipe off the excess to minimizing sanding. After it's dry, I lightly sand it, looking carefully for any spots that had build up, and finish it off with a dozen plus light coats of aerosol Deft Lacquer (gloss of your choice).
Question: If this has a jello consistency, how will it stay in place when applying it to my upper cabinet frames? Won't it run off a bit
Answer: Yeah, it will stay in place in a vertical application. Even upside down. It's way thicker than Jello. More like vasoline once spread. Once any stain or sealer is applied, I add a coat of gloss finish. Then, you can really see the pores or tear out your trying to fill. Add a the aquacoat, let it dry (20 minutes or so), sand, and repeat a few times. Then, proceed with finishing. Works great.

User questions & answers

Question: If you can reconstitute this product with water, then doesn't that mean the repair applied to your job cannot be cleaned with water
Answer: If you repair, stain/paint and seal the wood, as a *good* repair SHOULD be done, then there should be no problem. If the product in the jar is a bit dry and one adds water to reconstitute, it’s not the same as if one has filled gouges or cracks... let the product dry and cure... THEN cleaned with water. Fillers are a different creature once they cure; especially if painted/stained/sealed. There’s a big difference between the two circumstances.
Question: Can you use this to fill in permanent gaps between my old school farm house wood boards on floor
Answer: It's a putty for small projects like fixing a chip, or grain filling the surface of wood before a finish. It's not a building material. has no structural properties.
Question: Does this dry hard and is it sandable
Answer: Yes, and yes. It dries very hard and is easily sanded.
Question: what material are these made from
Answer: It's made from calcium carbonate and assorted binders.

FAQs

Q: Do I need to match the filler to the color of the wood if I plan to stain the wood?

A: GoodFilla is designed to accept stain similarly to wood. However, the stain needs to be darker than the filler. If you are using a light stain, match the filler to the color of the wood.

Q: How do I make a custom color with the base/neutral?

A: A liquid or powdered universal tint or dye is ideal. You can also use paints, food dyes, or stains to tint the filler to your desired color. Results will vary depending on the pigment load. Always test by applying the final finish over the dried filler.

Q: Can you use the filler outside?

A: Yes. Mix with a water-based weather-proof glue. For extra protection, be sure the area is coated/sealed with a clear coat.

Q: Can I mix wood flour into the filler?

A: Yes. Test the results and color by applying finish to the dry, sanded filler.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this harden once dried or is like the putty that always stays soft
Answer: It hardens after it dries and is easy to sand.
Question: Will this work on a scratched vinyl floor
Answer: Sorry, wood filler only works on wood. It won’t adhere to vinyl or plastic. I’m not sure how deep the scratch is, but an epoxy might work. Good luck!
Question: When this hardens is it gritty or smooth? Thanks
Answer: It's slightly gritty. But you can sand it as smooth as you want. I use it mostly on vintage loudspeakers.
Question: Can this be used on cracks in hardwood floors and if so, is it waterproof
Answer: The manufacture states: From filling nail holes in molding strips to filling gouges in hardwood floors, Elmer's Carpenter's Wood Filler tubes make the task quick and easy. However, it does also state: Easy water clean up, so I do not believe it is waterproof ( unless you glazed over it.)

User questions & answers

Question: Will it fill a 3"x3" hole in my wood plank shed? Had to drill a hole to get out just after the wind blew the door shut
Answer: It would likely work. However you would need install a backing board to support it while drying. I would probably keep the backing board in permanently. I used it for filling in large gaps in a rotten window sill and it is performing great.
Question: Is it stainable
Answer: Hello, Yes; To test, I applied some of the platinum patch to a small canvas, allowed it to dry, (did not sand) then applied some black Gel Stain to the canvas, and it took really well. Good luck with your project!
Question: Will it work to patch a chip/gouge on PVC trim
Answer: I haven't done that personally, but I think that's exactly what this product for. It is essentially sandable filler for PVC (and other materials).
Question: Does anyone know how to prevent the unused portion in the plastic can from drying up before I have a chance to use it
Answer: Scrape all material off the container wall, then put a piece of Saran Wrap over the rest of the unused portion. Not on the top of the can, push it right on the material inside the container then put the cover back on. Works great!

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used outdoors like on a mailbox post
Answer: Yes, but it needs to be mixed with a water-based weatherproof glue like Titebond 3 or WeldBond.
Question: Can this be used after a coat of polyurethane
Answer: Yes. You can use it between coats of finish. You can also mix it with the polyurethane prior to application. which will take away the step of putting a finish on to seal after application. However, this process also makes the dried filler more difficult to sand (either water or solvent base will work)
Question: This is water based, will oil based stain be compatible to go over it on a deck? I use an oil based stain on my deck
Answer: Yes, an oil base stain will work. Since you are planning on using it outside, we recommend mixing the GoodFilla with a water-based weatherproof glue like Titebond 3 or Weldbond.
Question: Can anyone who has used this to fill floor cracks tell me how it handles expanding and contracting over time due to humidity
Answer: If your floor is stable (by that I mean it does not move up and down like a trampoline), the wood filler will remain in the crack. You may want to fill in the winter when the gaps are the widest.

Question: Would this product help minimize the grain on oak cabinets before priming and painting
Answer: Yes. But why paint over oak cabinets and hide the grain?
Question: Is this putty easily sandable? Not harder than the wood itself (maple, in my situation
Answer: Yes it is easy to sand. I have used a lot of wood-fillers over the years, but Famowood is by far the best.
Question: I need to fill deep gouges in particleboard flooring under carpet. Is something better or cheaper when color and stainability aren't issues
Answer: Its a great product. I have used both the Famowood and Durhams Rock Hard water putty to fill in blemishes, cracks and large knot holes in plywood subflooring. Both worked very well with negligible shrinkage. A little sanding and a second application was required on large repair work. Both should work equally well on particle board. So far I have had no blemishes show through the finished VTC Vinyl flooring. As for pricing I would check local pricing and compare the cost with Amazon. Probably shipping charges will dictate your final choice.Regards,W. Les Clarke
Question: Am I the only one that is struggling to open the vapor lock seal lid? Certainly I am doing something wrong
Answer: Yes, had a hard time opening the lid myself. I tried just about everything I had on my workbench to try and pry open lid. I ended up using pliers to pry open the lid but it didn't look the same when I was done with it. Good product poor lid design

User questions & answers

Question: Will this fill nail holes on pvc quarter rounds
Answer: I don’t think so it’s a wood putty for nail holes etc. It’s oily and you varnish over after filling in the wood surface.
Question: What can be added to revive jar when it starts to dry? Linseed oil changed the color. Anything else
Answer: I’m not sure. Product pages do not say either. Put some putty in a separate container. First Try first mineral oil. If this does not work, try a few drops of asetone. Good luck.
Question: Is this wood putty stainable
Answer: No, this is not a wood filler that can be sanded and stained. It is an oil-based putty used after a wood product is stained and finished, primarily to fill nail and/or staple holes.
Question: I just purchased this product, it came out dry out of the box and almost solid. This doesnt make sense to me anyone got the same issue,is this normal
Answer: The putty drys when it gets old. It is useless for putty when it is old and dry. If you need to use it, sometimes mixing some linseed oil will get you through the job, Please complain to the supplier, nobody wants what you got.
