User questions & answers

Question: whats the inner diameter of the hose
Answer: it is a small tank because it is divided holds about 2 gallons of water for the entire tank
Question: is it 50hz or 60hx
Answer: They take the aqueous 2000 deluxe replacement cartridges
Question: What do you have to do to clean/replace material on the inside? Better than the cleaner that sits on the back of the aquarium
Answer: Most tetra species get more than 1.5 inches each at adult size. Some species of tetras getting up to 4.5 inches adult size. Putting tetras in this small of a tank is not recommended, because it will stunt them pretty bad and will shorten their life span. Professionally we recommend tetras to be in no less than 10 gallons. They do best in schools of 4 to 6 or more and need to be kept between 78-80 degrees as they are prone to stress and disease if kept in cooler water. Avid tetra owner for 15 years. Just my two cents.
Question: Does this filter come with a spray bar
Answer: I have this tank and it’s cool but as soon as we went to clean is it was a mess. Normally I do a 20 percent water change and this makes u do 50. Also my bettas have hated the flow of the tank and I’m in the process of getting new tanks for all 3 bettas

Fluval FX4 is a high performance canister filter with many outstanding features designed to make aquarium fish keeping easier and more convenient than ever. This super capacity yet compact canister filter has a pump output of 700 gallons of water and has a filter circulation of 450 GPH, which both work to produce cleaner and healthier results. Filtering material can easily be placed in a removable stack of media baskets, which is at the heart of Fluval's multistage filtration. The baskets are precision-engineered to eliminate water by-pass, making filtration more efficient. The baskets can hold a total of 1 gallon of media and can be stacked in the precise combination of layers that will work best for your aquarium. Each one is lined with a foam insert for effective mechanical pre-filtering. Instant-release T-handles let you lift and separate the baskets quickly and easily, making routine maintenance simpler. FX4 also features Smart Pump Technology, which provides optimal filter performance. This advanced technological feature employs an electronic circuit board that continually monitors the pump. Impeller speed and force are constantly measured to ensure powerful output and energy efficiency. It also manages the filter's self-starting feature and evacuates air that may enter or build up within the filtration system. On a 12-hour cycle, the pump will pause and allow trapped air to escape, ensuring the best filtration efficiency. Only 16.5 inches in height, FX4 fits under most aquariums.

User questions & answers

Question: is it quite
Answer: Quite? don't even think about it. it gets louder and noisier at night times. normally, an under 30 [db(A)] sound lever is a safe and acceptable lever, but this one will make about 36-38 [db(A)] sound lever in the night. especially in the bedroom (away about 18 feet from the bed), you will need a sleeping pill to put you to sleep. I had one, but after 2weeks, I can't bear with it anymore longer, had to return it.
Question: I have a 40 gallon tank for two read eared sliders. Would this filter be too strong or just right for my tank? Also, does it come with the hosing
Answer: I've got it on a 55 gallon and it works fine! With turtles you want at least 3 times the filtration so 40 gallons of water needs a 160 gallon rated filter or stronger. Also it is recommended that you house your turtles separately as they are going to grow to be 8-12 inches long and are solitary in the wild! I recommend you join red ear slider turtle owners resto group on Facebook and they will have all the information on best diet best filters and best tanks for your turtles!
Question: What do you have to replace for the filter media? And how often I don't believe what the company says about every month
Answer: This is a very good filter, with "5" stages. The main foam padding, stage 1 and 2, can be rinsed out and reused about 3 times before it starts to get too worn. I rinse it in the water just pulled out of the tank to keep from killing the beneficial bacteria with tap water which contains chlorine. The soft portion of this foam pad does not hold up to even gentle squeezing out. I just rinse out the tiny filter pad, stage 3, at the top of the unit and have not replaced it yet. This thing is pretty durable and surprisingly expensive for what it is. Stage 4, the bio-media should not be replace unless they get damaged. Replacing the carbon media, stage 5, is a matter of choice. Many do not believe in it. I do. If you do use carbon media, remember it gets "full" rather quickly and should be replaced regularly, depending on the kind and amount of fish in your tank, it could last up to a month. Just think of the Brita filters. They are mainly carbon filters, and they make water taste yummy and free of junk. If you are really trying to save, you can buy loose activated carbon and make your own sachets with cheese cloth or those fill-your-own teabags. I've thought about doing that but have not tried it. I've been too lazy, and just purchased the carbon media bags, I believe they are about 8 bucks for 3. Hope that helps.
Question: The Amazon description mentions "Ceramic heater core for even and efficient heat distribution". Does this have a built in heater
Answer: The Fluval c2 power filter advertises that it has a ceramic heater core... unless its built in somewhere inside, its not visable period. so with that said, i still had my glass tube style heater and continue to use it with the power filter as i doubt that something i can not even see will heat the 20 gallon long tank enough for that fish i have.

User questions & answers

Question: Do I need an aeration system in the tank in addition to this filter
Answer: You will need something. This provide no aeration. You will need a Venturi device of some kind. I'm aware of any in-line adapter, and the Venturi pump I got is away to strong for most tanks.. Air pump are noisy as crap, avoid them. I would probably just use a U3 in Venturi mode in addition. I have one of those running on my 50 gallon tank although I changed the media to matrix.
Question: I replaced the ring gasket & smeared it with vaseline but the filter is still leaking on the right corner of one of the lift-lock clamps. More ideas
Answer: re: Fluval 206 cannister filter: I think it is a design flaw of the cannister or cheap o rings. My cannister starting leaking, so I bought two new o rings. They leaked too. I'm going to purchase another new o ring and if that leaks....I'm chunking this filter.
Question: How tall is the fluval 406? We have limited height in our cabinet and need to make sure it will fit
Answer: For the 306, the canister itself is around 14" tall. With the levers and rigid outputs on the top, it measures around 18" (or maybe a little less). From out the top, the hoses attach (but they are flexible). The directions say to keep the hoses straight, but we found that nearly impossible in our cabinet, where the hoses take a bit of a turn out the back and up. By the way, this filter works great! We have a 30 gallon tank and bought the 306 model; the water is balanced and crystal clear.
Question: What's the benefit of a canister filter over hang on the side one
Answer: I didn't say a hang over the side filter is more difficult service, I said servicing the canister style filter is easier, and here's why. #1 Because canister filters are a more efficient design, servicing them is not a high priority in keeping your aquarium in good healthy condition. I am not familiar with the type you have but all HOB filters are right there in plain sight, where as canister style filters are out of sight, neither has any thing to do with servicing them but from the view point of your aquarium being a focal point in the room, the less machinery that is exposed the better. I run 3 Fluval 406 canister filters on my 100 gallon planted fresh water tank. Some say that's over kill. I have never heard anyone say your should not over filter your water, in fact I don't think you can. When you service one of these, everything stays in place. You simply turn it off, close the aqua valve, unsnap the power head and remove the canister to the kitchen sink and do your thing. You reinstall it empty of water, so less chance of a spill, snap the power head on, open the aqua valve, wait about 30-45 seconds while the canister fills and flip the on button. I do mine twice maybe three times a year but not because of poor water quality, because the outflow is below what it should be. First time I gave you the short answer, here's the longer one. The bottom line is a filter is a filter is a filter. I like the fact that mine are out of sight, all together, sitting on a foam pad to absorb noise and vibration. My air pump hangs in mid air under the aquarium. Best way to kill the vibration and noise. I used monofilament fishing line to hang the air pump. I have an Aqueon AQ4500 submersible water pump that I adapted so you can screw a garden hose to it, for water changes. It's rated close to 1200 US Gallons per hour, which is right about 20 gallons a minute, so I don't spends much time doing that. Aquarium's can be many things, from beautiful to the worst thing you have ever experienced. They can time consuming or not. There is some joy in doing maintenance, but when it becomes a burden, there's not much joy. I have tried to make mine as self sufficient as possible and or very easy to repair or service and the simple things like feeding, sometimes is not easy if your having to look for filter cords and air pump cords and anything else that needs to be stopped, fishing around in a jumble of wires looking for the correct one's to unplug for feeding, I built a control panel that is attached to the end of my aquarium stand. Everything electrical in my tank goes through the control panel. I flip five or six switches and I'm feeding. All filters are off, air stone is off, circulation power heads are off and heaters are off. I'm sure you have heard of the KISS clique? Keep It Simple Stupid. So like I said earlier, I like my machines in the engine room to keep my aquarium un-cluttered and as natural as I can. I hide everything in the tank as best as I can and it seems like I'm always dreaming up a better way or someone gives you a tip and off you go. I guess the bad part is the fact that you never have an aquarium that's big enough. The longer you have it, the smaller it gets, or it seems like that. Enjoy the hobby, it will last you a life time even if there are times when you do not have an aquarium for whatever reason. Like bicycles and roller skates, once you got it, you got it for life. And once you graduate from HOB's to canister's you'll never go back. I have 2 of them somewhere, don't know the brand or the size but sometimes someone or some reason or something happens and there is a need for a filter and what quicker way to get it running than an HOB. They do the job and they get returned to the misc parts bin when no longer needed where they await their next adventure.

Question: Will these fit in a 306? How often should they be changed. New at this bought the 306 for 70 gallon tank and water looks great. Do I rinse them 1rst
Answer: Yes they will fit 306/406 fluval canisters. They should be replaced once per month. Rinse them in tank water, not in tap facet water. You don't want the charcoal to absorb the chlorine from tap water that will harm the biological filter in your tank.

User questions & answers

Question: yesterday i cleaned out my filter and i put it back on but it wont suck in water from the pipe there is no pressure even after i pump it. why
Answer: I came home and my filter was not running. I have had this for a month and it was running great. I cleaned out the filter, etc. and cannot get it to prime. I feel like I have tried everything! I filled the canister with water and it will not prime. When using the prime button, the water goes up to a certain point but does not prime.. Help!
Question: What is the difference between the 1000, 1200, and
Answer: What the others said. Personally I would get the largest you can afford. More filtration is never a bad thing. The 1200 and 1500 use the same filter pads.
Question: Will filter work for a 100 gallon tank for my red ear slider turtle
Answer: Yes. I use this for my CST in a 55 gallon tank. This is a great filter. Remember, it is more about the media you use than the filter alone. Experiment with media to see what works best for you. For my turtle, I have found that layering sponges in the bottom tray from coarse, medium to fine and then using Matrix bio media in the next 2 trays and then using carbon and an ammonia neutralizing carbon in the last two trays works wonders. It really keeps my turtle tank clean. This filter is easy to use, prime and clean. Plus it is very affordable. All canister filters are basically equal, the media is what really matters.
Question: Will this include an installation manual and all the tubings? I am new to canister filters and I want to know as much as possible before purchasing
Answer: Yes, though you would do well to check out some YouTube videos demonstrating the setup, as well as the steps to take to disconnect the unit from the tubes for cleaning. The manual that comes with the filter is a great start, but a little unclear at times.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it have a UV light
Answer: No it doesn't. I haven't found a UV light necessary for my pond setup. It is outdoors, in the middle of the Pacific tropical climate.
Question: Will water be crystal clear
Answer: Water will be clear when you first start it. Depending on what type of marine life you are housing will be how clear the water remains. I have an eastern painted turtle and the tank needs to be cleaned monthly because they are dirty reptiles. I imagine that fish are much cleaner and the tank can be cleaned less frequently. But you still need to do periodic cleanings according to the instructions.
Question: Does this come with filter media
Answer: Hi Mark, yes, it comes with all the necessary filter media to start it.
Question: Where to check the model number
Answer: Hi Ronald, If you are looking for the model number on the filter itself, you won't find it. There is a label on the side of it though, near the top, with information about the filter. If you provide me with that information, especially the wattage, I can give you the model information.

About Us

Marineland’s history is a story of innovation with two unique beginnings. The first opens with Robert Sherman, a Cleveland entrepreneur and businessman who manufactured high-end lobster tanks for restaurants and grocery stores. Sherman’s aquatic tanks included innovative filter technology and other features that made his tanks superior. By 1970, Marineland of the Pacific was ready to bring its knowledge of aquarium science and marine biology to consumers. Serious hobbyists quickly embraced Marineland Aquarium Products as the company that truly understood both the art and science of fish keeping.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you change the light
Answer: It's a great filter but you will/should by the EHEIM top skimmer...that solves your problem. If I don't use the top skimmer I will get a film eventually. It also depends on the tank. I would say if your tank is less than 120G you should have no problem - greater ... get the EHEIM as an addition.
Question: Will this work for the Fluval Fx
Answer: We've had our filter for just under a year. No leaks. No complaints at all with this filter. Easy, quiet, all around great.
Question: Does it come with any tubing
Answer: I have had the Fluval Fx6 Canister filter on my 125 gal saltwater tank for several months now with no problems at all. It is low maintenance but keeps my water crystal clear. It is a good way to go in my opinion. It was very easy to set up and cleaning is like any other canister but I don't have to it as often.
Question: Will this work for a sunsun
Answer: I've been using the Fluval FX5 on my 100 gallon red eared slider turtle tank for about 12 years now. It's worked flawlessly over the years. I'm about to replace it with the FX6 due to various things starting to get worn out. So yes it does have pretty good longevity.

User questions & answers

Question: This accessory would fit the fluval 407 model
Answer: Fluvals are the best. I use it plus a over the top fluval to keep the top of the water clean. They're expensive but cannot imagine a better product for turtles. Also for the canister I use carbon, zeolite and also zeolite pellets
Question: Will this work on an intex pump model 365T
Answer: I would buy carbon in bulk/jars and would use knee-hi hose and measure whatever quantity carbon I needed and put the carbon in that. The carbon should be "pourable" from the bags.
Question: Does this impeller fit 306 Fluval
Answer: Carbon can absorb the plant food & leave plants malnourished Your live plants should do a good job of filtering your water. It's up to you , use carbon or substitute other filter media in your filter system. There is pro & con .
Question: Will this work on a 404 filter
Answer: I use it for my aquatic turtle (red eared slider) in an FX5 canister filter as the first stage filtration. I change it approx. every 2-3 months. Keep in mind I have 4 of them in there at one time in stage 1. For fish tanks, I am not sure.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use bio foam in a fluval
Answer: From what I read about the 205 you can use the bio foam in the lower most basket. We have the 206 and while doing research for how to arrange our baskets/contents in the best manner the 205/206 were frequently seen together while I was reading. Hope this helps!
Question: will it fit in Fluval
Answer: I don’t know about the 207, but I was able to fit my 106 biofoam into my new 407 with no problem.
Question: Will this fit the
Answer: Yes. I used it in my 204
Question: Can i cut this pad down to fit in a fluval aquaclear power 50 filter
Answer: Yes you can cut it down to size. Another thing that you can do is buy a bag of what is essentially polyester filling like you would use to fill a pillow. You can get some that they say is specially for aquariums. You can even buy it is rolls. Search for "polyfill stuffing for aquarium" - there's lot of options. That's what I usually use.
