11 best bottom inserts media

Bottom insert media, in the context of aquarium filtration, refers to filter accessories used to enhance the performance and efficiency of aquarium filtration systems, particularly in the filter chamber or at the bottom of the filter. These media are essential for maintaining a healthy aquatic environment for fish and other aquatic pets. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Purpose:

    • Bottom insert media serve several purposes in an aquarium filter system, including mechanical and biological filtration.
    • They help remove debris, waste particles, and excess fish food from the water, improving water clarity and quality.
    • These media also provide a surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize, facilitating the biological filtration process by breaking down harmful ammonia and nitrite into less toxic nitrate.
  2. Types:

    • Common types of bottom insert media include foam pads, sponges, filter floss, and ceramic or plastic bio-media.
    • Foam pads and sponges are excellent for mechanical filtration, as they trap large particles and detritus.
    • Ceramic or plastic bio-media provide ample surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow and convert harmful compounds.
    • Filter floss is often used as a pre-filter to catch larger debris before it reaches other media.
  3. Placement:

    • Bottom insert media are typically placed at the bottom of the filter chamber or stacked on top of each other in a specific order within the filter.
    • The order of media placement matters, with mechanical filtration media usually at the top to trap debris and biological media lower down to ensure efficient bacterial colonization.
  4. Maintenance:

    • Regular maintenance of bottom insert media is essential. Mechanical media should be rinsed or replaced as needed to prevent clogs.
    • Biological media should not be cleaned too often, as it houses beneficial bacteria crucial for biological filtration.Rinse it gently in tank water only if it becomes excessively dirty.
  5. Compatibility:

    • Bottom insert media should be compatible with the type of aquarium filter you are using, whether it's a canister filter, hang-on-back filter, or internal filter.
    • Ensure that the media you choose fits the available space in your filter and complements any existing filter media.
  6. Sizing and Customization:

    • Some aquarium enthusiasts customize their filter media by cutting or shaping it to fit specific filter chambers or compartments.
    • Be mindful of media size and shape to ensure proper water flow and filtration efficiency.
  7. Benefits:

    • Bottom insert media help maintain water quality, reduce ammonia and nitrite levels, and provide a clean and healthy environment for aquatic pets.
    • They contribute to the overall effectiveness of the aquarium filtration system, ensuring a stable and thriving ecosystem.

When setting up or maintaining your aquarium filter, consider the type and arrangement of bottom insert media that will best suit your specific needs and the requirements of your fish or aquatic pets. Proper filtration is crucial for maintaining a stable and healthy aquatic environment.

User questions & answers

Question: I have a fluval 406 canister filter any want who recomended me this product to keep the water clean?? Or any good product for a turtle tank
Answer: You will need something. This provide no aeration. You will need a Venturi device of some kind. I'm aware of any in-line adapter, and the Venturi pump I got is away to strong for most tanks.. Air pump are noisy as crap, avoid them. I would probably just use a U3 in Venturi mode in addition. I have one of those running on my 50 gallon tank although I changed the media to matrix.
Question: Are the particles large enough to take out of the bag? i have a small tom filter and they no longer make the cartidges, so i just need a small amount
Answer: re: Fluval 206 cannister filter: I think it is a design flaw of the cannister or cheap o rings. My cannister starting leaking, so I bought two new o rings. They leaked too. I'm going to purchase another new o ring and if that leaks....I'm chunking this filter.
Question: Why does it say " ; Use carefully when keeping live plants" in the last sentence above where the benefits are listed at the top
Answer: For the 306, the canister itself is around 14" tall. With the levers and rigid outputs on the top, it measures around 18" (or maybe a little less). From out the top, the hoses attach (but they are flexible). The directions say to keep the hoses straight, but we found that nearly impossible in our cabinet, where the hoses take a bit of a turn out the back and up. By the way, this filter works great! We have a 30 gallon tank and bought the 306 model; the water is balanced and crystal clear.
Question: how often does this have to be changed
Answer: I didn't say a hang over the side filter is more difficult service, I said servicing the canister style filter is easier, and here's why. #1 Because canister filters are a more efficient design, servicing them is not a high priority in keeping your aquarium in good healthy condition. I am not familiar with the type you have but all HOB filters are right there in plain sight, where as canister style filters are out of sight, neither has any thing to do with servicing them but from the view point of your aquarium being a focal point in the room, the less machinery that is exposed the better. I run 3 Fluval 406 canister filters on my 100 gallon planted fresh water tank. Some say that's over kill. I have never heard anyone say your should not over filter your water, in fact I don't think you can. When you service one of these, everything stays in place. You simply turn it off, close the aqua valve, unsnap the power head and remove the canister to the kitchen sink and do your thing. You reinstall it empty of water, so less chance of a spill, snap the power head on, open the aqua valve, wait about 30-45 seconds while the canister fills and flip the on button. I do mine twice maybe three times a year but not because of poor water quality, because the outflow is below what it should be. First time I gave you the short answer, here's the longer one. The bottom line is a filter is a filter is a filter. I like the fact that mine are out of sight, all together, sitting on a foam pad to absorb noise and vibration. My air pump hangs in mid air under the aquarium. Best way to kill the vibration and noise. I used monofilament fishing line to hang the air pump. I have an Aqueon AQ4500 submersible water pump that I adapted so you can screw a garden hose to it, for water changes. It's rated close to 1200 US Gallons per hour, which is right about 20 gallons a minute, so I don't spends much time doing that. Aquarium's can be many things, from beautiful to the worst thing you have ever experienced. They can time consuming or not. There is some joy in doing maintenance, but when it becomes a burden, there's not much joy. I have tried to make mine as self sufficient as possible and or very easy to repair or service and the simple things like feeding, sometimes is not easy if your having to look for filter cords and air pump cords and anything else that needs to be stopped, fishing around in a jumble of wires looking for the correct one's to unplug for feeding, I built a control panel that is attached to the end of my aquarium stand. Everything electrical in my tank goes through the control panel. I flip five or six switches and I'm feeding. All filters are off, air stone is off, circulation power heads are off and heaters are off. I'm sure you have heard of the KISS clique? Keep It Simple Stupid. So like I said earlier, I like my machines in the engine room to keep my aquarium un-cluttered and as natural as I can. I hide everything in the tank as best as I can and it seems like I'm always dreaming up a better way or someone gives you a tip and off you go. I guess the bad part is the fact that you never have an aquarium that's big enough. The longer you have it, the smaller it gets, or it seems like that. Enjoy the hobby, it will last you a life time even if there are times when you do not have an aquarium for whatever reason. Like bicycles and roller skates, once you got it, you got it for life. And once you graduate from HOB's to canister's you'll never go back. I have 2 of them somewhere, don't know the brand or the size but sometimes someone or some reason or something happens and there is a need for a filter and what quicker way to get it running than an HOB. They do the job and they get returned to the misc parts bin when no longer needed where they await their next adventure.

User questions & answers

Question: I put one of these into my filter and my water is cloudy. Did I mess up
Answer: I don't think you messed up. If you didn't quickly rinse with cold water to remove any AquaClear dust then it is just small filter particles. Give it a day or two.
Question: How often do i need to change the zeo carb, i have 3 common goldfish in a 55 gallon running two 110 filters
Answer: About once a month is usual. I use regular carbon in one and zero carb in the other and I have a 75 gal. I had 9 fish in it so it got really dirty. I have another filter as well, a Whisper 40i. With 3 fish you might go for 2 months!
Question: can this be used in a salt water tank
Answer: I don't have one, mine is fresh with turtles. Works great for all the sludge from them but not sure about salt
Question: I have one of these Aqua Clear filters& just use the foam, carbon and bio-max it came with. whats different with this one
Answer: The Zeo-Carb combines the activated carbon and the ammonia remover. It allows the filter to have four substrates instead of just the three it came with; the sponge, carbon and bio-max. Some aquarists substitute the bio-max with the am-rid since there is only room for three substrates in the filter, but the Zeo-Carb allows to have both the am-rid and bio-max.

Question: I wear a size 8 shoe. Should i order a
Answer: I wear a size 7 and ended up ordering a size 6. I originally ordered a 7 and had to send them back. I am using them as rain boots. If you plan on using them for winter boots and use the insert, then I would get the size 8. Otherwise go down a size. Hope this helps. Good luck.

User questions & answers

Question: how often do you need to replace the zero-carb insert
Answer: Depends on what you have in the tank. We've got RES turtles so that's every 2-3 months. I just rinse it out monthly. When it gets nasty, I change it. Hope this helps.
Question: Does this work well in a turtle tank
Answer: YES! My kids have 2 RES that are almost 5 yrs. - so they're big. Absolutely no smell anymore and I only have to clean the tank every 3 months. I have 2 - Aqua Clear 110 filters in a 150 gal. tank.
Question: do you use zeo carb and replace the bio max insert
Answer: I use Zeo Carb in place of the Carbon insert. I don't replace the Bio Max insert. If the filter has been running for a long time you can then replace the carbon insert for the new zeo carb insert and at the same time replace the bio max with a new bio max insert. You can take the old sponge and rinse it out with some aquarium water. With that same water soak your new bio max insert in the water for around 5 minutes or so before putting it into the filer with the old sponge and the new zeo carb insert. Soaking the bio max will let the good bacteria have a chance of setting up faster on the new bio max.
