The white is a cotton type filter material. You need to change it pretty often as it will get nasty. You can purchase it at a pet store or Wal mart. I happened to have a bag of pillow batting and used it when it needed changing. |

The sponge, thanks to its high surface area harbors beneficial bacteria that breaks down ammonia and nitrates. |

I'm not sure that the same result will be achieved by having an air stone just sitting inside the tube. |
