14 best canine dewormers for small dogs

Canine dewormers for small dogs are veterinary medications designed to treat and prevent infestations of intestinal parasites in small dog breeds. These parasites can include roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, and whipworms, among others. Deworming is an essential part of a dog's healthcare routine, as untreated parasite infestations can lead to various health issues.

Here are some key points to know about canine dewormers for small dogs:

  1. Types of Dewormers:

    • Broad-Spectrum Dewormers: These are designed to treat multiple types of intestinal parasites, making them a convenient choice for preventing and addressing various infestations.
    • Targeted Dewormers: Some dewormers specifically target certain types of parasites. Your veterinarian may recommend a specific dewormer based on the type of infestation your small dog has.
  2. Administration:

    • Dewormers are typically administered orally, either as tablets, chewable treats, or liquid suspensions. Follow your veterinarian's instructions for proper dosing and administration.
  3. Frequency:

    • Puppies are often dewormed at regular intervals starting at a young age. Adult dogs may be dewormed annually or as needed, depending on their risk factors and lifestyle.
  4. Preventative Use:

    • In addition to treating active infestations, some dewormers can also be used as a preventive measure. This is especially important for small dogs that spend time outdoors or are at higher risk of exposure to parasites.
  5. Veterinary Guidance:

    • It's crucial to consult with your veterinarian before administering any dewormer to your small dog. They can assess your dog's specific needs, recommend the appropriate dewormer, and provide guidance on dosage and frequency.
  6. Potential Side Effects:

    • While dewormers are generally safe when used as directed, some dogs may experience mild side effects such as diarrhea or vomiting. If you notice any concerning side effects, contact your veterinarian.
  7. Regular Testing:

    • Regular fecal testing is essential to monitor your dog's parasite status. Your veterinarian can perform these tests to ensure that the dewormer is effective and that your dog remains free from intestinal parasites.
  8. Prevention:

    • Maintaining good hygiene and keeping your dog's living environment clean can also help prevent reinfestation. Regularly cleaning up feces in your yard and ensuring your dog's food and water dishes are clean are essential practices.

Remember that the choice of a dewormer and the frequency of deworming should be discussed with your veterinarian, as they will consider your small dog's age, health status, lifestyle, and risk factors when making recommendations for parasite control. Proper deworming is an essential aspect of your dog's overall health and well-being.

User questions & answers

Question: Are there any other ingredients beside the fenbendazole
Answer: Yes, there are some inactive ingredients. So that we can answer any other questions you have about the product please contact us at [email protected].
Question: What are the active ingredients
Answer: The Active Ingredients listed on the box in each dosage unit: Fenbendazole Granules 22.2% (222 mg/g). Safe-guard Canine Dewormer is for use only in dogs, 6 weeks or older for the treatment and control of: Tapeworms, Roundworms, Hookworms and Whipworms. There are 3 packets in the box. You would give your dog one packet each night for three nights in a row. It is very palatable and many people will add some canned food to a small portion of dry food. We have seen very little resistance to this method of worming and it is very effective. Please let us know if we may answer any more of your questions. Thank you for your inquiry.
Question: My dog weighs 50 lbs. Will this work for her
Answer: See the 2nd pic above: you need a 4g dose, plus a 1g dose for a 50lb dog. Basically, it's 1g per 10lbs of dog. You can either buy a combination of 4g, 2g, & 1g boxes, or just 4g boxes and measure it out.
Question: Can this be used as a preventative
Answer: There is not really a worm preventative; even so-called heartworm preventatives work by killing heartworm larvae that are already present in the animal, before they have a chance to develop into adults. (It takes about 2-4 months before heartworm larvae mature and migrate to the heart.) By the same token, worming on a regular basis with a broad spectrum wormer, such as Safe-Guard or Panacur (fenbendazole), or Strongid (pyrantel pamoate), kills a wide spectrum of worms, whether they are in larval or adult stages. (These are also also the same thing as the paste wormers of the same name for horses). These are all very mild, yet effective wormers. Depending on your dogs' (or cats' as these are the same wormers used for them with different dosages) potential exposure to the eggs/larvae, which are typically passed on through feces and stay viable/active in the environment for a fairly long time, you should work up a schedule, either monthly, every other month, or at least twice a year. (Heartworms are passed on through bites by infected mosquitos, with any mammal, like a bird, raccoon or other pet acting as a host). NONE of these wormers kill the type of tape worm that typically infests dogs, cats and humans. (The type mentioned on this package is typically hosted by rabbits.) The only thing that kills tapeworms is praziquantel (brand name Droncit or Cestex). Not even ivermectin, a very powerful wormer that kills a wide variety or worms, including heartworms, (none of these other products do that either), kills tapes. (This is also why you must test dogs before giving high dose ivermectin, as if there are by chance heartworms lodged in the heart, it can kill the dog along with the worm.) Eggs of worms are generally passed on through stool, although tapeworm eggs/segments are shed through the rectum, and look like rice. They are also passed on through infected fleas, that carry the larvae and pass it on when the infected flea is swallowed (not by a flea bite). Also you should rotate the broad spectrum wormers to avoid building drug-resistant parasite populations. Although praziquantel kills tapes by dissolving their outer membrane, so they are then absorbed by the body, the other wormers often just paralyze the worms until they pass through the intestines, making it very important to dispose of the pets' poop afterward to avoid reinfestation (really need to do that anyway). Just for your knowledge, hookworms can be passed on through bare skin, so think twice next time you want to go barefoot in the park. The good news is that all of these products that are marketed for dogs, cats and horses are the exact same ones that are prescribed by MDs for their two legged friends. (Not that I'm advising you to take them without a physician's recommendation, naturally.) So you need to have a plan to worm with different products for different categories of parasites during the year, although not with the same frequency. It takes awhile for larvae to grow into an adult tape, for example, so once treated, you could do praziquantel probably once or twice a year. I'd suggest no less than every 3-4 months for febendazole or pyrantel pamoate and of course heartworm medication should be given monthly or daily (depending on the product) if you have mosquitoes. I'm no expert by any means, just sharing my experiences of breeding and showing dogs, cats and horses for over 40 years. Always do your own research if you have any doubts about dosages or products.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this have a shelf life
Answer: It does not say fda approved (that I can find on bottle) but it does say not for human consumption.
Question: Is this product for small medium or large dogs
Answer: Yes, cheddar cheese contains natural enzymes. This product s 100% cheddar cheese. It's freeze-dried so the enzymes are not compromised!
Question: Is this safe guard for heartworm
Answer: YES.... just shake it "dry" on your dog's food.... our dog loves it... BUT you can also add a little water and mix it, if your dog likes a "broth" style food. We have several flavors.... he loves them all.
Question: It doesn't say in the boxes, but I assume that the 1g has 222mg of febendazole and the 2g has 444mg? Thanks
Answer: I would just buy another spray bottle from Lowe's and transfer the shampoo. Not sure if Amazon will replace the sprayer.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this be okay for a 9 week old puppy
Answer: It says for dogs as young ast 12 weeks, so I would assume its unsafe for under 12 weeks
Question: Can this be used for cats
Answer: It’s the same two active ingredients as Rx Drontal (pyrantel and praziquantel) for cats, but not at the right doses or in the right proportions. One of these tablets has 30 mg of praziquantel and 30 mg pyrantel. On the other hand, one Drontal for a cat sized 2-16 lbs has only 18 mg praziquantel and more than double—72 mg—pyrantel. All wrong. However, you can buy each of those medications separately on Amazon as solutions (liquid formulations). Just check to make sure the version you’re buying doesn’t have inactive ingredients that would be unsafe for cats.
Question: Does it kill larvae
Answer: My understanding is, that it does. After using it. My dogs have never had worms again
Question: Does this not come for large breed to
Answer: Unfortunately they don’t have this one for large dogs but they have the Sentry HC brand for large dogs.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this ok for puppies and if so how do you administer to puppies
Answer: The Lavender Mint Detangling Spray will help with brushing, shine and conditioning, please check with your groomer or veterinarian for further information regarding your Shih Tzu (they are such a wonderful breed). Thank you.
Question: Has anyone had an issue with not receiving order from this seller? I’ve messaged them and am no longer getting a response. Any suggestions
Answer: Thank you for contacting John Paul Pet. Please refer to your veterinarian and/or groomer regarding your pet's specific grooming needs as some pets require daily care and others may benefit from weekly grooming.
Question: Are there a total of 15 - 1 gram packets
Answer: We use the SD Hairball, Lite formula for ages 1-7, which is a large chunk. We mix it 50/50 with Royal Canin hairball because we like the low calories from SD but find he needs the extra hairball from RC. He often selects and eats RC pieces leaving large SD but eventually eats those as well. We don't give more until bowl is empty. You could place a little water in dish to soften the chunks. Why do we mix foods? Vet recommended Ros to shed 3 lbs. After much research, the combo works and his coat is gorgeous, shedding is reduced and poop is manageable for an inside cat. It's nice you care enough for your cat to check around. 🐱
Question: Are there 5 boxes with 3 packets in ea box
Answer: I think it is. My Vet recommended this for our cats, but you might want to check with your Vet first, just to make sure. We also feed our adult cats a little Science Diet kitten food just to supplement some vitamins for them. We have used Science Diet for many years and we have had cats live for 15 to 19 years of age. I hope this is helpful for you. We don't feed our cats anything like 9-Lives or Kit-In-Kabotable, ect. Because of the ash content, especially if your cats are indoor cats. The ash plugs up their urinary tracts.

Question: Will this tree dogs over 40 lb
Answer: I used it on our cat also - but to be sure possibly ask manufacturer or your Vet - Our dog and cat loved it - in fact after bathing in the John Paul Pet Shampoo they looked forward to the "spritz" of the Tea Tree Spray :)
Question: The expiration date
Answer: I wouldn't use it on an open sore and you just reminded me, I forgot where I heard it but using ttea tree on animals is not recommended. I'm not a doctor or animal expert but that's what I heard. I'll be removing this from my listing now :).
Question: how effective is this product for giardia
Answer: I used it for both after a bath and sometimes just to brush them and smell good. No water is involved . I love this product !

Question: Has any one used this on their cats? If so please let me know . Thank you
Answer: I don’t know if it would be safe to use on puppies. I do know that I have been using it on my dog for the last year. He just turned 3. He sweats a lot around the groin area and after I apply the oil he has a tendency to lick himself. I’m sure he ingests some of the oil but to date it has not hurt him. Maybe you can google more info about the oil.

Answer: I don't know. This are from Catit
Question: so I understand, it's 222mg per gram, so a 4-g packet is 888mg
Answer: Water, salmon,, modified tapioca, natural flavors, salmon oil, and taurine.
Question: what is the differance between the premium pack and regular pack
Answer: Yes. Why do you ask? I purchase these for my sick cat that has trouble swallowing. I am concerned about the quality because they come from Thailand. The Catit (Rolf Hagen) company is NOT forthcoming AT ALL. Which is not a good sign. Does anyone know anything more about their quality?
Question: how long does the treatment last
Answer: Looks like Thailand. Distributed through Canada and US. One of my cats love them but my other cat won't eat them. I buy the chicken and liver flavor. Hope this helps.
