13 best squirrel traps
Squirrel traps are devices designed to capture and control squirrel populations, typically for the purpose of pest control in outdoor areas such as gardens, yards, and attics. These traps come in various types and designs, each with its own method of capturing squirrels. Here are some key points about squirrel traps:
Live Squirrel Traps: Live traps are designed to catch squirrels without harming them. They are typically cage-like structures with one or more entry points and a mechanism that keeps the captured squirrel contained until it can be released elsewhere.
Lethal Squirrel Traps: Lethal traps are designed to kill squirrels. They include devices like spring-loaded traps and electric traps. These traps are usually baited with food to attract squirrels, and when triggered, they quickly dispatch the animal.
Bait and Lure: Squirrel traps often use bait or lure to attract squirrels. Common baits include nuts, seeds, fruits, and peanut butter. The bait is strategically placed within or near the trap to entice the squirrels to enter.
Placement: Successful trapping depends on the strategic placement of the trap. Squirrel traps should be placed in areas where squirrels are known to frequent or where they are causing damage. This might include near bird feeders, in gardens, or along attic entry points.
Checking and Release: For live traps, it's essential to regularly check the traps to ensure captured squirrels do not suffer or remain trapped for an extended period. Once a squirrel is caught, it should be released in a safe, wooded area away from human dwellings.
Legal Considerations: Before using squirrel traps, it's important to be aware of local regulations and laws regarding trapping and relocating wildlife. In some areas, it may be illegal to trap and release squirrels without the proper permits.
Humane Considerations: If using lethal traps, it's important to consider the ethics of using such methods. Many people prefer live traps to avoid causing unnecessary harm to animals.
Prevention: In addition to trapping, it's important to take preventive measures to deter squirrels from becoming a nuisance. This may include sealing entry points to attics or using squirrel-proof bird feeders in your garden.
Squirrel traps can be an effective means of managing squirrel populations and preventing damage to property or gardens. However, it's crucial to use them responsibly and considerately, taking into account the welfare of the animals involved and adhering to local regulations regarding wildlife control.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this work to catch cottontail bunnies |
Answer: | I purchased this one to catch chipmunks; works perfect; for bunnies, it's probably too small; there is only 10 inches from the door to the trigger they have to step on; maybe real small rabbits, but overall, I would say don't trust it for rabbits; you need next size larger. |
Question: | Is this trap large enough for grey squirrels |
Answer: | I have caught 5 grey squirrels in less than 24 hrs with this trap, several of which were quite large. I used peanuts as bait. This, by far, has been the most effective trap to catch grey squirrels. |
Question: | size |
Answer: | It's about 16" X 6" X 6.5". Perfect size for one squirrel. |
Question: | I have a rat who is only attracted to Pepsi - can I put a bowl of this in the cage |
Answer: | A bowl would be to large and might block the trip mechanism. You could use a large cap off a bottle or one of those small plastic cups that fruit or pudding comes in filled with Pepsi. Balancing one of those on the trip plate so when the rat goes for a drink should work to catch your addict. |

Havahart Live Animal Cage Trap Model 0745
The Havahart 1-Door Live Animal Trap is Havahart’s extra-small trap and designed to capture a number of small-sized critters such as chipmunks, squirrels, flying squirrels, weasels, rats and voles. Designed and field-tested by trapping professionals, it uses an ultra-sensitive trip-plate to capture these tiny animals and a close-set wire mesh to contain them. With the right bait, you’ll draw your target animal into the trap. Once the animal trips the trigger, the gravity-action door drops behind them, safely holding the critter until you can humanely release it.
To protect the animal, the trap features smooth internal edges that keep the animal safe from harming itself. Each trap features a carrying handle so you won’t come in contact with the animal inside.
Chipmunks
Use peanut butter to 'glue' sunflower seeds, corn or raisins to the trigger plate of your chipmunk trap, then place it near the chipmunk burrow, under bushes they hide in or under a shed or similar structure.
Rats
Try a variety of food in your trap, including bacon, peanut butter or nuts. Place the rat trap near walls, wires or other pathways you believe the rats use. If you see rat droppings or gnaw marks, you’ve found the right spot.
Squirrels
The baits squirrels love match most other small animals – peanut butter, nuts, apple slices and grains. Place the trap where squirrels are active, but away from other food sources, such as a bird feeder.
Voles
These mouse-like animals have a small range, so place your trap within that territory. Bait with apple slices, nuts, sunflower seeds or gum drops. You can 'glue' those items in place with peanut butter.
Step 1: Baiting
Often times, it’s easier to bait the trap before setting it and placing it. For most animals, you can apply peanut butter to the trigger plate and add some supplementary item to it as further incentive to the target animal.
Step 2: Placement
Your trap should be placed where there’s evidence of the pest animal’s activity. In particular, try to place it near its nest and in any areas where it might normally find food. Remove all other food sources, if possible.
Step 3: Release
After the capture, try to make the animal as comfortable as possible. Cover the trap with a towel, and release the animal at least 2 miles away. Be sure to check your local catch-and-release laws before trapping.

Question: | Will this fit under the hood of my Camry? Rats are devastating wires under the hood. He's there almost every morning working away on his nest |
Answer: | I found that the traps are the best I have found however I also put lime on my driveway under my car rats will literally move out I put along walls in garage and around front yard I have 3 dogs and lime is harmful to domestic animals but lime and the traps helps get rid of rats and mice very quickly |
Question: | will these harm squirrles |
Answer: | Yes they definitely will. My pest control company says legally, they cannot set them outside because they can catch birds, squirrels, cat paws, dogs... they are really strong and effective for killing rats but you want to be careful. I don't know if they would kill a squirrel but I'd be careful setting them outside. |
Question: | I set 3 traps in our garage. A rat was caught 30 minutes ago, but is still moving! Is this normal |
Answer: | No. I have used the old school snap trsps made out of a wood board and metsl snap hinge and NEVER had this happen. I set out 6 of these and 2 totally took off with the trap still on. |
Question: | Rats are eating the bait without setting off trap...peanut butter bait cup is nibbled to empty. Anyone found a solution |
Answer: | Here is the answer. Take a half of a peanut and GLUE it to the bottom of the cup. Then smear a very small amount of peanut butter on and around the nut. This works because when they try to extricate the nut using force the trap will engage. |

Question: | What bait should i use for the squirrelinator |
Answer: | I use Chicken scratch, they love it! |
Question: | How tall is it |
Answer: | Its about 3' square. I have two of them and they work great. Without them I wouldn't have a garden. |
Question: | how big are the openings, are they small enough, 1/2" sq., to keep a flying squirrel trapped |
Answer: | They are perfect. Once they enter the trap the opening closes immediately and they are trapped with no way to get out unless you let them out. |
Question: | What is the size difference between $55 and $141 Squirrelinator Trap |
Answer: | Nothing, it’s a trick. They charge you 141 for one trap. Just choose the one for 55$. I had to get a refund |

User questions & answers
Question: | Why are squirrels not attracted to this trap anymore? I’ve had great success in past years with peanut butter and crackers/pretzels but not this fall |
Answer: | Not sure. I've had mine for 2 seasons and caught 2 or 3 ground squirrels per week this summer. I had little success with pecan paste but great with peanut butter. I put some on the pan and some under the pan never missed one |
Question: | How or in what way does it kill them? I cannot tell from the photos |
Answer: | There is a spring which consists of the rectangular bar you see on the outside of the tube. When the varmint trips the plate on the inside it releases and the bar slides forward and up quickly via the two slots in the tube. This has been Very Very effective in reducing the population. I can honestly say this trap has killed over 100 and still counting. Sometimes 3 in 1 day if I can remove and reset fast enough. I have had to modify the set piece because has become to slick to reset and hold the bar rectangular bar. Couple coats of clear nail polish did the trick for me. Hope this helps! |
Question: | Can I use this for tree rats? Would they be heavy enough to trigger it when they run through |
Answer: | I would think so. It is a very heavy duty trap. I have primarily used it for ground squirrels, but have also trapped and killed rats. I think this is one of the best traps on the market for rodents. Also, it is very easily to dispose of the dead animal. |
Question: | My dog chases squirrel and sniff out everything. Can this trap hurt her? Also once the squirrels are dead where do they go |
Answer: | My dogs are not able to get into the trap or get dead squirrels out of the trap. Unless your dog is very very small, there shouldn’t be a problem. As for disposal, I unlatch the trap and dump the dead squirrel into a plastic bag and then the trash can. After that, just reset the trap and bait with some sunflower seeds, and repeat. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this trap alarge rat? Would a rat's long tail keep the trap from closing? Would I need a bizgger trap to account for a long body and tail |
Answer: | Doubtful. Rats have collapsable rib cages. Usually anything the size of a nickle or a quarter they can get through. If they can get their head in it, they can get their body through it. 1x1 would be more than enough room for a rat to escape. I worked in pest control for 4 years. |
Question: | Would this work for flying squrell |
Answer: | I'm not sure of the habits or diet of a flying squirrel, but if they come to the ground, they might be tempted to go in the trap. We use sunflower seed as bait. We have caught at least 10 gray squirrels in the last 4 months in this trap. |
Question: | I've assembled this correctly but it takes quite a force on the plate to trigger the door to close. Any suggestions |
Answer: | Hmmm. Perhaps you received a defective trap because the one I have required almost no pressure on the plate. Note that the hook slips under one of the trap door rails from the rear and the rails just barely stays latched. I even needed to install a thing loop of tape around the notch in the latch to add a bit of extra friction. As long as you've installed the trigger rod in the trigger plate correctly, connected the other end with the loop to the latch hook and then slid the latch hook under the rail on the door from the backside, then very little force is needed on the plate to spring the trap. In three days use I've already caught and released five squirrels. |
Question: | I have a domesticated large rabbit in my backyard. Is this large enough to catch it |
Answer: | What you mean by "large" makes a big difference. The trap length is listed as 17 inches however the door's top hinge point is only 10 inches from the back of the trap and the door closes at an angle, with the bottom door edge an inch back from the front edge of the trap. So when closed the interior is actually only 16 inches along the bottom, 10 inches at the top.. The trap's trigger plate is hinged to the floor of the trap and there is just 8 inches from this hinge point to the place where the door hits the bottom of the trap. Any pressure on the trigger past this hinge point will release the spring loaded door. Squirrels are not long and they tend to sit up on their haunches when approaching food. Rabbits tend to be much longer and to stretch out when moving. The risk would be that the front portion of the large rabbit trips the door while it's backside is still too close, or even outside, the front of the trap . A small bunny would probably fit (as indicated in the product's description). A large rabbit, no. Get something larger. But for squirrels?, I've so far trapped close to 20, and the count would be even higher except that we've been slammed by a snow storm. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Other traps i have used have a door for release. how do i release the mouse without holding the mechanism open |
Answer: | It will become apparent when you hold the trap in your hands. Believe me, when you open the door, the animal zooms away so fast, and he is not headed towards you. |
Question: | I want want to catch rats. They have built themselves many tunnels in my rockery. I don’t want to catch the eastern gray squirrels. Will this work |
Answer: | Yes, this will work. Just be sure to bait it with a food they will like- I used a small piece of bread covered in peanut butter and rolled in sunflower seeds. I also put a towel over the trap once they are caught and I am bringing them somewhere else to release/ this helps to calm them |
Question: | Does the trap have a carrying handle? It does on some pictures and not on others; which is it |
Answer: | Yes it has a basic handle made of thin metal wire on a hinge that can lie flat on top of the trap, which may be why it’s not apparent in some photos. But it’s definitely there. |
Question: | I pull the handle back to set it and it doesn't stay. i guess i got a dud.i guess i'll have to return it |
Answer: | Mine was the same. It is not a dud though, you just have to adjust the sensitivity. Under the trigger plate is a small silver magnet. Gently bend the flap on the trigger plate away from the magnet to make it less sensitive, and closer to the magnet to make it more sensitive. If the metal flap is set too close to the magnet, the force of the magnet will trigger the trap, even with no weight on the trigger, and it won’t stay open. |
- Heavy Duty - Constructed of sturdy galvanized steel for maximum resistance to rust and corrosion. 12-Gauge wire mesh prevents animals from breaking it.
- Ultra Sensitive - Once the pedal touched slightly, the gravity-action door will drop down in a flash. Also the trigger bar is located outside the trap to prevent captured animals from damaging it.
- Non-Toxic Solution - Easy to set up the bait and catch undesired animals alive.
- Easy To Use - Comes fully assembled and ready to use. 16.3” x 6” x 6.7” TRAP CAGE FOR CATCHING: Squirrels, chipmunks, rats, weasels and other similar-size nuisance animals.
- Kindly Note - We recommend checking with your local authorities to determine the trapping laws in your area before using a live trap.
User questions & answers
Question: | why are there no reviews |
Answer: | I purchased mine for trapping chipmunks, it works like a charm! |
Question: | What do you do if the trap plate is not sensitive enough |
Answer: | The only "setting" for sensitivity for this trap are the upper and lower vertical rods. They are hold together by friction when the trap is set. It may be possible to bend one of the rods to create less of an interference fit between the two rods. VERY SMALL adjustments will be necessary. OR Maybe a small amount of lubricant where the 2 rods touch, I would try this one first. |
Question: | Is this good for cats as well |
Answer: | Yes. I caught a cat as well as skunks. |

User questions & answers
Question: | what type of material is the tube made of |
Answer: | The tube is designed with ABS pipe, the board is cedar and all the steel is galvanized |
Question: | What kind of bait do you use for squirrels |
Answer: | According to us, one of the best squirrel bait is piece of berries granola bar that you can nail pin into the nail in the trap |
Question: | When this trap kills a skunk, do you still get the fierce order, or does it kill quickly enough that the skunk doesn't have time to react and spray |
Answer: | You'll probably get stink. But you don't have to. I caught almost a dozen skunks that were coming every night to dig up my lawn. This was in NE Ohio near the lake, and the skunk population was huge for some reason. I used a (no-kill) 'Havaheart' trap. It was big enough to catch skunks, coons, and possums, but not so big that the skunk could lift its tail. And that's the key. Skunks can't spray if they can't lift their tail. The downside of live trapping is you have to release them somewhere. But none of them ever sprayed, or made any threatening move on release - they were far too concerned with getting away than getting revenge. Part of the reason might be that I left them in the trap to settle down overnight and took them to their new location the next afternoon after work. I used the same strategy on the other critters too, and they never gave me any problem on release either. |
Question: | Can you explain how this trap works? Does the critter go in and when it comes out it snaps it's neck |
Answer: | It comes down on the critter when it goes into the trap. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How do you empty body from trap? How do you clean itrap for reuse |
Answer: | Simply pull down on the trap spring, tilt trap and shake it free. I don't clean the trap between uses but on occasion use a magic eraser to clean gunky bait off the pan. |
Question: | can it trap rabbit |
Answer: | It could in theory, but it would be difficult to impossible to get a rabbit into a confined tube. Squirrels enter the trap because it is in there nature to do so. |
Question: | Will this catch opossums |
Answer: | Probably not unless they are real small like a squirrel. THE ones I have around here are bigger than a house cat. A box trap for a 330 con i bear trap would work the best, baited with regular house garbage, they will eat anything. the trouble with baiting is you don't want to catch your tame animals |
Question: | Can a baby raccoon fit in it ? I don't want to have that happen |
Answer: | Certainly possible. When I use mine, I butt one end up against the tree to allow the squirrels only one entrance, then they have to pass the trap to get to the bait. I think raccoons are more likely to explore than a squirrel, so you might want to try a live trap. |

Reliable & Durable Traps
The AB TRAPS 1-Door Animal Trap is designed to remain reliable and sturdy enough to withstand the pressures of outdoor conditions as well as the unruly animals you may trap.
Innovative Safety Features
Safety for both people and animals is always a priority when designing a trap. The 1-Door Animal Trap is no exception. The spring-loaded door ensures the animal remains securely inside.
Corrosion Proof
The metal is coated to prevent rust and corrosion, making the trap ideal for outdoor use. After an animal or rodent is caught, the trap can be re-baited and used over and over again.
Extra Thick Wiring
The trap is made of thick and durable metal to prevent animals from chewing or clawing their way out. The wire material is easy to carry. Its Use for All-Weather and Seasons.
How To Catch Them The Right Way
When having to lure a stubborn rodent:
- ✓ Keep the compression bar snapped into the Storage Latch so the door stays propped open for as long as you need to lure your rodent. Put some sweet-smelling/fragrant bait inside and outside of the trap for a few days. Peanut butter, dog food, and dried fruit are some good choices. Check to see if the bait was taken now you are ready for the next step to set the trap to catch your rodent!
When you are ready to catch a rodent:
- ✓ Place the cage in a dark and gloomy place or corner where they often appear. Preferably somewhere on the way to their nest. TIP: Make sure the trigger is extra sensitive by adjusting the tip of the compression bar just barely into the suspension loop and not all the way past the suspension loop.
- ✓ Anyone can do it quickly and effectively! Our traps make catching and releasing your unharmed rodent back into the wild so easy!
Rat
Peanut butter works very well with Rats. Place the trap against a wall or corner in a dark place where there are signs of droppings, chewed on areas or tiny openings. If you are placing the trap outdoors you can place it against a wall, where you see an opening, behind trash cans or in the garden near the fruits or vegetables.
Vole
These hamster and mouse-like animals don't typically cover large areas where they roam. So it's best to find the center of their lair. The suggested bait would be seeds/nuts, fresh berries or other fruits, sweet chewy candies and additionally peanut butter.
Chipmunk
Bird seeds are among the chipmunks most favorite food, walnuts, pears, carrots, apricots, raisins, bananas, beans or tomatoes can be used as well.
Squirrel
Squirrels love sunflower seeds, vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, peanut butter and sometimes cheese.

User questions & answers
Question: | What are the dimensions of the trap, width and length? I want to make sure it is large enough for a good sized rat. Thanks |
Answer: | Th outer dimensions of the trap base are 2-7/8" x 5-1/4". The bar that clamps down on the critter is 3" tall. The critter that it sent to rat heaven for me was about 10" body length and had another 8-9" tail. It comes down on the head because it is eating whatever you put in the cup. So it doesn't take much height to kill a good size rat. Its very well built and well constructed. The spring action is VERY strong. The instructions say to use peanut butter in the cup but the critters also love dog food. If you don't have a dog, then I would suggest almonds as well. But not walnuts for some reason.... |
Question: | Rats or something eats the peanut butter without tripping them. How is this possible since they are very sensitive to trip |
Answer: | I had the issue they would actually trip too easily and then the rats would eat up the bait. I'm inclined now to moving to traditional traps. These stop working after a few uses due to the clasp wearing out. I've thrown out 3 of the 4 as they wont arm anymore. |
Question: | I think it would be pretty important to mention the size of the rattraps, width and length in inches |
Answer: | They are about 3" X 5 1/2" I caught 10 chipmunks and a few shrews and even house mice in about a week They are easy to set without getting your fingers in it I'm sure they will also catch rats |
Question: | what do you use for bait |
Answer: | I put peanut butter in the bait holder as glue to hold the unshelled black oil sunflower seeds. But you must sacrifice some seed in front of the trap to build up their confidence. |

User questions & answers
Question: | does this work for gophers and chipmunks and small red squirrels or are the cage spaces too large to hold them |
Answer: | Wire hole size is too big for chipmunks. We have the chipmunkinator for chipmunks. As for gophers not designed for that. |
Question: | What is the best bait to use for Squirrels (Got them in my garage and now going up walls and how should it be used in trap |
Answer: | I find using sunflower seeds works well. I would dig a small hole under the trap and put the seeds there otherwise the first squirrel cleans out the bait...if he can't get to all the bait, it'll hopefully catch more than one for you. Also know they get angry when captured and the trap moves around a lot. It'll ruin grass under it so I encourage placing it on dirt or in area where grass isn't a concern. |
Question: | what is the difference between the squirrelinator with basin and the one without what does the basin do |
Answer: | the basin is for you to cool down after you see the squirrels running around your trap and don't want to go in... |
Question: | I noticed one of these is offered without the basin. What is the purpose of the basin? Thanks |
Answer: | Ground squirrels coats can begin to smell badly from running around in the dirt and heat during the summer months. The basin is used for giving them a good shampooing to freshen them up prior to releasing. It's fun and squirrels really enjoy it. I recommend using a flea shampoo (with a nutty fragrance) as these cute furry little critters are occasionally tested and found to carry the bacterium, Yersinia Pestis. Yes, I'm talking about the Bubonic/Black Plague. I wouldn't kid you. |
