13 best red ant killers

Red ant killers are products designed to eliminate or control red ant infestations in and around your home, particularly in the context of patio, lawn, and garden areas. Red ants, also known as fire ants, are known for their aggressive behavior and painful stings, making them a nuisance and potential hazard in outdoor spaces. Red ant killers come in various forms, and their effectiveness depends on the specific product and application method. Here are some common types of red ant killers and how they work:

  1. Baits: Ant baits are one of the most common methods for red ant control. They typically consist of a toxic substance mixed with attractive bait. Red ants are drawn to the bait, consume it, and then carry it back to their nest, where it can eliminate the entire colony. It's an effective way to target the source of the problem.

  2. Sprays: Ant sprays are used to directly target red ants on contact. They often contain chemical insecticides that kill ants upon contact. These can be useful for immediate reduction of ant populations in specific areas but may not provide long-term control.

  3. Granules: Granular ant killers are designed to be spread over the affected areas, including lawns and gardens. They release chemicals over time, killing ants that come into contact with them. Granules are effective for treating larger outdoor spaces.

  4. Dusts: Insecticidal dusts can be applied in and around ant mounds or nests. When red ants come into contact with the dust, it can lead to their eventual demise. Dusts are best used in conjunction with other control methods.

  5. Ant Repellents: Ant repellents are designed to deter red ants from entering specific areas. They often contain natural or chemical ingredients that create a barrier to keep ants away. These can be used around patios, gardens, and the perimeter of your home.

When using red ant killers or repellents, it's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully for safe and effective application. Additionally, consider the potential environmental impact and opt for environmentally friendly options if possible.

Regular maintenance and monitoring of your outdoor spaces can help prevent red ant infestations in the first place. Keeping food and water sources sealed, eliminating nesting sites, and maintaining a clean environment can all contribute to effective pest control.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this safe to use around plant
Answer: Si es en polvo muy bueno
Question: Why can’t this be shipped to my address in Minnesota
Answer: I bought this and have not tried it but I imagine if you put down the drain and go to bed it may work. I wouldn't run the water till the morning so it wouldn't be diluted. Roaches also love popping up from the seal around the sink and counter. Also from behind and under the back splash. In those hard to get in cracks I purchased a rose duster for a few bucks and used it under the house, holes in walls cracks in the wall, pulled out the kitchen drawers and dusted the area inside, under and behind all appliances and gaps, in the attic. I noticed Roaches coming in from outside so that's why I dusted the crawl space and attic. Good luck.
Question: What if the ground isn’t moist before application? Do the granules have to be wet to work
Answer: It's just powder, so easily cleaned up, but it depends on where you put it...I usually use it in the backs of drawers and cabinets, along baseboards, etc...wherever you think the insects may be traveling from. Results are fairly quick...you will see a decrease withing days
Question: Why will this state that it will not ship to my address in Texas, however, no problem with the shipping of the same product that is in the 4 lb size
Answer: No, it doesn't even kill Roach.

User questions & answers

Question: would someone list the active ingredients percentage by weight
Answer: Hi Lisa! Yes! You may apply to trees and other ornamental landscape plants to control listed pests. You would just not want to apply to edible trees or plants.
Question: Can this be broadcasted in 12,000 foot garden without hurting plants(tomatoes, squash, peas,, lettuce)just got garden tilled & saw few ant mounds
Answer: Thank you for asking! Carpenter Ant & Termite Killer Plus would become rain proof, once it has been allowed to dry. However, you would not want to reapply for at least 2 weeks.
Question: Is this the same as the stuff that comes in the hard plastic container? I don't want to broadcast it. I just want to put it around the mounds
Answer: We answered this a few years back and did not mantion that it is a CONCENTRATED liquid. Wear protective masks and full coverage clothing. We spray for ants around the foundation and our deck every spring and we're set for the entire year. My grandson recommended a battery powered sprayer sold by Tractor supply for about $110. It makes up to about 19 gallons of diluted mix. Fantastic buy. Will reach 15 foot trees with ease. We thoroughly sprayed the top and underside of our deck with ease. Never see an ant. Fabulous product. Can hook it up to garden tractor battery or regular car battery,
Question: How long before the ants die? It's been 3 days so far and all the mounds are just as active as before. It hasn't rained, so that is not the problem
Answer: The instructions say yes to both.

The Two-Step Method

What is the Two-Step Method?

The expert-recommended Two-Step Method to fire ant control is one of the best proven approaches to effectively manage fire ants, which involves broadcasting a bait over your entire yard and then treating individual mounds with granules.

  • Step 1: Broadcast AMDRO Kills Fire Ants Yard Treatment Bait over the entire yard to kill the colony in both the hidden and visible mounds, as well as for season long control.
  • Step 2: Target individual "problem" mounds with AMDRO Kills Fire Ants Fire Ant Bait.

Why is this method so effective?

Bait is considered the best method for killing ants since bait works even when you can't find the nest. Unlike contact pesticides, bait can wipe out the entire colony by destroying the queen. Worker ants find the bait and think it's food, so they bring it back to share with the queen and the rest of the colony. Once the queen and other ants eat it, the whole mound dies.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does ant bait take to work?

Given that ant bait is intended to be disguised as food, it has a built-in delay that gives foraging ants time to take it back to the mound to share. Once the queen and other ants eat it, the whole mound dies. Typically, the bait will begin to kill the queen within one week of application and will kill the colony within two weeks of application.

Is AMDRO safe to use around livestock?

After applying AMDRO Kills Ants Fire Ant Yard Treatment Bait and AMDRO Fire Ant Bait we recommend that you do not graze or feed treated lawn or sod clippings to livestock.

IS AMDRO safe to use around pets?

While instructions vary by product, it is recommended that you do not apply the product while pets are in the treatment area. However, you can let your pets back onto treated areas once the dust has settled.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this safe to use around plant
Answer: They suspend in water
Question: Why can’t this be shipped to my address in Minnesota
Answer: 6 inch.. Baby brushes at 4.5 I think.. Babies for the spring.. Big ones for late summer and fall
Question: What if the ground isn’t moist before application? Do the granules have to be wet to work
Answer: They work well on largemouth but you will get more bites on the baby brush hogs for sure ! I like the big ones because I have caught several big fish on them and tournament fishing you have to catch some bigger fish to compete
Question: Why will this state that it will not ship to my address in Texas, however, no problem with the shipping of the same product that is in the 4 lb size
Answer: In my opinion, this bait is best used for flipping into heavy cover, like weeds, grass or lay-down logs, etc. I rig it 'texposed' with a 5/0 extra-wide gap hook and a 1/2 ounce(or heavier, depending on the cover) bullet weight. If this terminology is unfamiliar to you, there are lots of good videos on youtube- it's abit complicated to explain with text, but by actually watching someone do it, it's not hard at all to learn. Use heavy line, at least 20# if you're using mono or fluorocarbon, but I personally use braid, 50# or even 65#, and a stout rod.All that being said, one CAN use the smaller sizes as a drop shot bait. Here is where spinning gear and lighter line, 8# or 10# test, depending on cover/water clarity, can come into play. Again, youtube can show you how to rig a Brush Hog on a drop shot rig.

User questions & answers

Question: does it kill sugar ants
Answer: Yes!
Question: Will this product kill tiny ants? Also, will it get rid of the entire colony what is already nested in your house? Thanks
Answer: It kills every ant on your property if you use it right. It was more effective than my pest control companies stuff. Been using it for years. I am back here to order more. Don't use before it rains and use the whole product as it will degrade if you open and let it sit.
Question: Has anyone used this around lizards or squirrels? Or would anyone use it around these critters
Answer: I have used this product for a couple of years now. It works great. I sprinkle it around my home and around my yard perimeter. I have not seen a decrease in the gecko's/lizards so I assume they are ok. I don't think squirrels are attracted to it either. The product works great for about 45-60 days.
Question: My ants ignore this bait completely. They are not interested in sugar or p.n.butter either. What's the solution
Answer: Amdro perimeter bait is a preventive solution for around the outside of the house to prevent ant from coming inside. If you already have ants in your home, try a different solution...such as Terro Liquid and bait. They shouldn't ignore that. You will have to put up with an ant trail for a couple of days, but they will go away.

Why is Bait Better?

Bait is considered one of the most effective methods for killing ants. Bait works even when you can't find the nest and unlike contact pesticides, bait can wipe out the entire colony by destroying the queen.

Bait is designed to taste like food, so it is enticing to ants. Once worker ants find the bait, they bring it back to be shared with the queen and the rest of the colony. Once the queen and other ants eat it, the whole mound dies.

As a means to ensure that the bait is shared with all the ants in the colony, there is a delayed reaction before the bait begins to take its full effect and kill all the ants in the colony. Therefore, bait is considered to be more effective than contact killers since bait is shared with the entire colony, while contact killers will only kill ants that come into contact with the product.

With AMDRO, it's game over for ants.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Ant Bait take to work?

The active ingredient in AMDRO works with delayed action, ensuring worker ants have time to share the bait with the colony. Typically, the bait will begin to kill the queen within one week of application and will kill the colony within two weeks of application.

What is the best way to treat for ants I found inside my home?

If there are ants already inside your home, we recommend doing two things. First, use one of the AMDRO Kills Ants products listed for indoor usage above to kill the ants that are already inside. Second, apply AMDRO Ant Block Home Perimeter Ant Bait granules around the outside of your home to prevent ants from getting inside.

Do I have to reapply granules if it rained after being put down?

For best results, we recommend not applying the product when the ground is soaking wet or when heavy rains are expected.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this the original Amdro with yellow granules
Answer: Yes. The ants have caused so much damage that when this kills them, the plants recover quickly. Especially grass. The ants carry it down into their nests very effective. Only small amount needed for each best. About a tablespoon of two. Do not broadcast. Just drop on nest entry.
Question: What ant bait works on ghost ants
Answer: Too many environmental concerns for your state...
Question: Why is this only $20 at Home Depot
Answer: If the ground is dry, water the area to be treated the night before. Apply the product to dry grass and water as directed after the application.
Question: I don't live in an area with fire ants (thank goodness) - just have ants, big and little, does this work on them
Answer: Everything in Texas is bigger? So you need the Taxas size

Terro

Based on 49 reviews Check latest price

Product description

To kill common household ants, simply place TERRO Liquid Ant Baits stations near indoor areas where ants are spotted. Ants enter the trap, consume the liquid ant bait and return to the nest where they pass on the bait to the rest of the colony. TERRO Liquid Ant Baits are specifically formulated to allow worker ants to consume the product and survive long enough to carry the liquid back to the nest and deliver a dose to the rest of the colony . The liquid ant bait stations prevent the bait from drying out and provide the ants with a continuous supply of liquid, day and night. Monitor the baits regularly for activity, but do not interfere with the ants or baits. Replace with additional baits when the first set is depleted. Depending on the size of the ant infestation, complete control may take up to two weeks.

  • Patented design prevents bait from drying out
  • Attracts ants fast
  • Contains Borax

User questions & answers

Question: Why is the pricing so weird? It's actually 2x more in bulk! Did someone make a mistake? Sorry for the rhetorical question, silly vendor person
Answer: It has to do with who the actual "seller" is. If you select a quantity of "1", in this case, it is "sold and fulfilled" by Amazon. If you select a quantity of "2" it is "sold" by another company while still being "fulfilled" by Amazon. Yes, both quantities are, as of this writing, "fulfilled" by Amazon but that just tells you that Amazon stores, packages, and ships both items(1 and 2 packs) even though there are, in reality, two different "sellers". If you click back and forth on the quantity selector you'll see the "sold by" name change. Look just under the price after you switch. The seller of the 2 pack sets the price whereas the seller of the 1 pack(Amazon) sets its own price. I'm sure Amazon buys the 1 pack in very large quantities and, therefore, can get a bigger discount, per piece, than the other "seller" can get, per piece, for the 2-pack.
Question: How safe is this product in the kitchen? We have a few ants crawling around our kitchen sink and would like to place one of these bait stations on our kitchen counter. Bad idea? Thanks
Answer: This is a generally safe product according to my research. Make sure to read the packaging and follow direction. (FOR INDOOR USE READ THE FOLLOWING) One lesson I learned the hard way: the sugary syrup is irresistible to ants, even though it is laced with poison. This means when you use Tarro, you're actually providing access to free food! The poison will work on the ants and it takes about 18-24 hours to kill them... but as you wait after 24 hours, Tarro syrup will attract other thriving colonies into your home. They'll follow the same rich trails laid behind by the previous colony and even scavenge on the carcases of the previously fallen colony. This cycle will continue, attracting ants from far away reaches and allowing them to setup massive colonies within your home. This is especially true with Argentine ants (available throughout the world), which form massive colonies with multiple queens - a trait unique to this type of ant, whereas others will battle for territory. So the lesson learned is simple... once the initial 1 or 2 swarms die down, remove all baits and all forms of food from open spaces in your home; patch up all openings in walls, baseboards, cracks around windows, etc; apply perimeter pesticide around your home; and look for signs of wandering ants in the next week. If you see more ants then you missed an opening and already have an established colony in your wall.... repeat!! Just don't leave out Tarro and keep replenishing, especially in the case of Argentine ants.
Question: Is this safe to have around pets? I have a curious cat
Answer: I'd say no. My cat knocked one of these over once and licked the syrup. She was fine but it wasn't a fun afternoon (trip to the vet, etc.). Terro sells a version of this that encloses the bait in plastic and has sticky squares to attach them to the floor, counter, or other surfaces. I use those instead now.
Question: I have a baby in the house and I would like to use this product to kill ants in my house. Any precautions you suggest before I use this product
Answer: The ant trails at my house sometimes go from the floor to the ceiling. I turn the bait so that the liquid will not run out and use Scotch tape to tape it to the wall next to the ant trail. I tape the bait high enough that babies and grand children cannot get to it. It usually takes two days for the ants to disappear. Then three days after they disappear, they return to the trap. Another two days and they disappear again. The second time they disappear is usually the last time I see them at that location.

TERRO Liquid Ant Baits

Ants can be a problem anywhere – in the home, at work and everywhere in between. To kill common household ants, place TERRO Liquid Ant Baits in areas where they attract foraging ants that take the bait back to the nest. As the bait circulates through the colony, it kills the ants you see and the ones you don’t. The new and improved snap-off tab makes the stations easy to use. To open the bait, hold the station vertically and twist the tab. This opens up the station and allows ants to access the bait. Place the entire station on a flat surface, keeping the ant bait inside the station. Plus, the closed bait stations prevent the bait from drying out to provide the ants with a continuous supply of liquid, day and night. Note: complete control may take up to two weeks.

How Liquid Ant Bait Works

Since this is a bait, initially you will see more ants – but don’t worry, this is a good thing. Why? As ants forage for food, they are easily attracted to the sweet, sugary liquid inside the bait stations. After finding the bait, worker ants consume it and leave behind a pheromone trail leading back to the colony. This trail lets other worker ants know where the newly discovered food supply is. This is why you will see more ants in the beginning.

Meanwhile, the active ingredient, Borax, is slowly interfering with the ant’s digestive system, ultimately killing it, but leaving enough time for the ant to go back and share the dose with the rest of the colony. This slow kill is necessary so that foraging ants can make several trips to the bait. The communal nature of an ant colony allows the bait to be spread to hundreds, if not thousands, of individual ants.

How to Use Liquid Ant Baits

TERRO Liquid Ant Baits are very easy to use. Before placing the bait stations, be sure to remove other sources of food, such as crumbs, sugar and grease spots to prevent attracting ants elsewhere. Do not place bait where you’ve already sprayed insecticides, as the pests may avoid the bait stations.

  1. Hold the bait station firmly with bait pack tab facing up. Break off the tab being careful not to spill the bait.
  2. Place the bait station label side up on a flat surface near signs of ants. Place additional bait stations anywhere they may enter your home. For best results, use all bait stations to ensure a sufficient supply for the ants.
  3. Monitor placements regularly, but do not interfere with the pests or bait stations. Replace when bait is depleted. Complete control may take up to two weeks.
  4. Once ants are controlled, replace the baits every 3 months to keep them from returning.

It is also weatherproof so one application lasts the whole season. It can be used for protecting any outdoor area from ants, such as patio tables, bluebird houses, beehives, and hanging plants. It's one line ants refuse to cross! Nectar Fortress is safe for these reasons: It is not sticky, tacky, or adhesive in any way. It does not contain petroleum products, including oil, waxes, or grease It is made entirely from food-based materials. Nectar Fortress is made almost entirely of a fatty acid, which birds naturally secrete to preen and condition their feathers. Oleic acid, also called omega-9, is one of the major fatty acids secreted from a bird's preeening gland (uropygial gland). In the unlikely event a bird were to come in contact with the product, it is part of what birds already use to condition their feathers.

Fire Ant Facts

Fire ants have become a major problem in the U.S. in recent years. These deadly ants are prevalent in Southeastern states, Texas, Oklahoma and south-central California. However, in the next few years the range is expected to extend up the Pacific coast through Washington, into Kansas and Missouri, and into New Jersey. Fire ants often attack in swarms, causing painful stings to humans and destroying whole ecosystems by killing other insects, birds, lizards and small mammals. Queens can live up to 6 years and produce millions of eggs. They live in mounds that extend above ground. Another hazard from fire ants is their attraction to electric current. Where they build their mounds they often chew through underground cables. In light of the growing danger from these invasive insects, Spectracide(R) brand has developed a deep-reaching formula that will kill the colony and the queen.

Decreased ant activity will be observed as soon as 24 hours after bait placement, and fire ant control will occur in as little as 48 hours after application. Use this convenient shaker canister for broadcast or mound treatment – treats 3,000 square feet for broadcast treatment. Apply in early spring or summer at the first sign of fire ant activity, then again the fall to reduce the number of ants that return next spring. For best results, apply Spectracide One-Shot Fire Ant Killer in morning or evening hours. At these times, fire ants are actively foraging. Avoid watering or mowing the treated area for 24 hours after application to allow ants time to forage the bait and take it to the mound.

User questions & answers

Question: What size package and how many mounds does it treat
Answer: Checked the packaging, and it really doesn't directly address the issue. It does warn about getting it into runoff water, as it kills fish and invertebrates. Frogs are a sign of a healthy ecosystem, so whats bad for them is bad for us as far as I'm concerned. I use it for fire ants, and only put it on nests not near my citrus trees. As for the garden, raised bed, not so worried as the mechanism for killing is the taking of the poison to the queen in the nest. As long as the nest is away from the garden I feel safe(er). This is more concentrated (x2.5) than most of the normal selections at Lowes, which is why I get it at Amazon.
Question: Is this the same formula as the 12 ounce container
Answer: 10 lbs.
Question: Will this also kill black ants
Answer: No idea. I just sprinkle per mound
Question: is it for indoor or outdoor
Answer: We thank you for your inquiry. Yes, you will want to lightly water your lawn after applying the Spectracide Fire Ant Shield Mound Destroyer Granules.

User questions & answers

Question: how long do a can last
Answer: This is the BEST fire ant killer I have ever used, more effective than the granules. I use it in our pastures and it usually kills within 24 hours. Use about 1 Tbs. per mound and the can is 24 oz.
Question: It says it can be mixed with water but there are no instructions for that on the canister. Has anyone tried that
Answer: I am not sure, but would assume it is the same....we wanted the larger size. How interesting for your request, as my husband used ours on our neighbor's yard this morning. It really will kill ants, and gets used each time we see an ant hill on our driveway.
Question: What other things that it kills
Answer: I couldn't tell you for sure but it will run them off to build another mound. I do not believe it is a 100% any killer although I believe it gets some of them. They will build another mound. I haven't found a good ant killer, except what the EPA outlawed many years ago. Good luck!
Question: Does it kill most ants other than fire ants
Answer: Outdoor.
