14 best insect control for lawn granules

Insect control for lawns can be essential to maintain a healthy and pest-free outdoor environment. Lawn granules are an effective way to control insects in your yard. Here are some common methods and products for insect control using lawn granules:

  1. Insecticide Granules: These granules typically contain chemicals designed to kill or repel various lawn pests, such as ants, grubs, fleas, and ticks. They are applied directly to the lawn using a spreader, and their effectiveness can last for several weeks or even months.

  2. Grub Control: Grubs are the larval stage of certain beetles and can cause significant damage to your lawn by feeding on grassroots. Specific grub control granules are available that target these pests. They should be applied in late spring or early summer when grubs are actively feeding.

  3. Ant Control: For ant infestations in your lawn, there are granular products designed to eliminate ant colonies. These granules are applied around ant mounds or along ant trails.

  4. Flea and Tick Control: Lawn granules can help control fleas and ticks, which are not only a nuisance for pets but can also transmit diseases. Look for granules formulated specifically for these pests and apply them as directed.

  5. Mosquito Control: Some granular products are designed to control mosquitoes by targeting their breeding grounds, such as standing water. These granules release an insect growth regulator that prevents mosquito larvae from developing into adults.

  6. Organic and Natural Options: If you prefer a more environmentally friendly approach, there are organic and natural lawn granules available. These products may use ingredients like neem oil, diatomaceous earth, or beneficial nematodes to control pests without harming beneficial insects.

  7. Timing and Application: It's crucial to follow the manufacturer's instructions for proper application and timing.Typically, you'll need to apply the granules evenly across your lawn and water them in after application. Some granules require reapplication after a certain period, so be sure to check the label.

  8. Safety Considerations: Always wear appropriate protective gear when handling and applying insect control granules. Keep pets and children away from treated areas until it's safe for them to return.

Remember that effective pest control often requires an integrated approach. In addition to using lawn granules, consider practicing good lawn maintenance, such as regular mowing and proper watering, to create conditions less favorable to pests. Monitoring your lawn for signs of infestations and addressing them promptly can also help keep your lawn healthy and pest-free.

Spectracide Triazicide Insect Killer Products

There’s an army of insects out there looking for the next lawn or garden to feast on. Don’t let them turn the fruits of your labor into an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Spectracide Triazicide Insect Killer products are formulated for broad-spectrum control of outdoor insects, whether you’re controlling pests in your lawn, garden or landscape. They even take care of bugs below ground, leaving plant-munching insects with nowhere to hide.

How do you know if you have insect damage?

In the heat of summer, we all have brown patches in our lawns. If it’s irregular or mottled, the browning could be a symptom of lawn pests. To test, pick a spot in the affected area of your lawn and spread the grass blades so the surface roots are visible – this will give you a good view of turf-feeding bugs. If the browning is fairly uniform over your entire lawn, it’s most likely caused by hot and dry weather.

Aphids

These green, yellow, brown, red or black pear-shaped insects with long legs and antennae aren’t easily disturbed. They suck plant juices out of the leaves, stems or roots of plants.

Ticks

In the same family as scorpions and spiders, these tiny arachnids are blood-feeding parasites found in tall grass. They carry infections such as Lyme disease, and females inflate from flat insects to oval shape after feeding.

Fleas

Found primarily on pets, fleas are just 3/16 inch long, but they carry several diseases, including typhus, bubonic plague and tapeworm. They usually appear in clusters of two or three on human ankles or legs or anywhere on pets.

Japanese beetles

A constant source of aggravation for gardeners, Japanese

beetles eat 300 types of trees and plants. Metallic green with coppery brown wing covers, these 3/8 inch-long creatures are often found around homes and gardens, attacking flowers, fruits and lawns.

Grub control

The tough lawn grub can cause real damage to your lawn and landscape. Whitish and c-shaped, grubs feed on grass roots, making lawns incapable of drawing necessary water and nutrients from the soil. Grubs are highly active during the summer – adult females generally lay their eggs in the soil during July, and the newly hatched grubs begin to feed on turf roots in early August, causing grass to die off in irregular patches.

For grub control, use Spectracide Triazicide Insect Killer products in late spring, then again in the fall if a second generation appears.

User questions & answers

Question: is this biodegradable
Answer: I question your competency. Yes it is biodegradable
Question: How often is reapplication needed
Answer: Here in Western PA we have been having some serious rain issues. I don't doubt the manufacturers specs on the package about using the product every ninety days. However, in my case? About three days after application we had RAIN. The resulting plethora of gnats, skeeter's, flies, no-see-ums" leads me to doubt the product was invented by Noah and could survive a flood. So, if the rain is scheduled to leave for at least a week. I will re-apply. I have had great success with Ortho products in the past.
Question: Can pets be in the yard
Answer: I put it out in my yard and let my dogs loose in the yard couple of hours later and they were fine. I also have a few stray cats that were go though my yard and lay around in my yard and they were fine also.
Question: Does this kill millipedes? We figured in we got infested outside after buying garden plants at one of the big box garden stores
Answer: More than likely, centipedes are listed on the bag among what it kills so i would imagine it does.

Product features

Ants

Ants are common pests throughout the world. They are a nuisance, largely because of the annoyance caused by their presence - constructing mounds in the lawn or invading the home from the yard in search of food.

Fleas

Adult fleas are no larger than 1/8 inch long. They are reddish-brown, wingless insects that are laterally compressed, so they look as if they are walking on edge.

Ticks

Although ticks are commonly thought of as insects, they are actually arachnids like spiders and mites. They have 4 pairs of legs and no antennae. They lie in wait for a passing deer, pet, or person to walk near the shrub or grass they are perched on.

Spiders

Spiders can be found throughout the country. If you have the occasional fly or gnat in the house, chances are you’ll also have spiders in the house. Spiders live on bugs, but not enough to be considered for pest control.

Chinch Bugs

Adult chinch bugs are about one-fifth of an inch long and black with white wings folded over their backs. Chinch bugs feed on many kinds of lawn grasses, but St. Augustine grass and Zoysia grass are favorites.

Cutworms

If you see spots of brown grass and birds pecking at your lawn, you could be facing a cutworm infestation.

Mole Crickets

Mole crickets can be twice as long as their singing cousins - and their tunneling can ruin your lawn.

Sod Webworms

Sod webworms are the larvae of lawn moths. They live in the root level of your lawn and munch up the grass leaves. At root level, you’ll see small white tubes made of silky web. At dusk, you might even see the worms themselves.

  • DuoCide's unique formula contains both bifenthrin and carbaryl - two professional-grade insecticides
  • features Dispersible Granule (DG) Technology allowing granules to disperse quickly and completely when watered, moving them directly into the soil
  • Not for sale in California

User questions & answers

Question: How long do have to wait to mow again after applying duocide
Answer: Most granular products fall into the thatch layer so if it hasn’t been watered in you likely won’t suck up many of the granular. I would recommend lightly watering in after you apply which allows the granuals to disperse.
Question: Why can't this Product be shipped to California
Answer: Ask your state and local government. It probably has to do with their restrictions.
Question: They are destroying my tangerine plants. Applying it 2 ft away won't help. If there are no fruits, can it be applied closer to the root
Answer: Ues
Question: Is it safe to use at the same time I put down pre-emergent
Answer: I can’t answer that; I sprayed my pre-emergent back in February and I didn’t didnt put the Andersons Duocide Lawn Insecticide until April. I do suggest watching the short video on lightly watering and then 30 minutes later repeat to expedite its absorbing into the ground. I did apply other fertilizers etc. prior to the insecticide though. It does break down very easily, so I would say if the insecticide was put down and watered into the ground as recommended then I wouldn’t think that there would be a problem

Product features

Eliminate Pests Above and Below the Surface

The Andersons DuoCide is a professional-grade, curative lawn insect control. Fast acting DuoCide eliminates more than 50 common lawn pests, including grubs, ticks, fire ants and fleas. With a unique formula containing both bifenthrin and carbaryl, DuoCide eliminates lawn pests above and below the soil surface with a single application.

DuoCide also features The Andersons patented Dispersible Granule (DG) Technology, which makes spreading easier and increases effectiveness. With DG Technology, DuoCide granules break down upon contact with water and disperse into thousands of microparticles that move through the turf canopy and into the soil for maximum performance.

Applying DuoCide

Application rates range from 2-8 lbs/1000 sq ft and vary based on pest(s) to be controlled. See the chart below for more detail.

Proper application timing depends on pest(s) to be controlled. For surface pests (ants, spiders, billbugs, chinch bugs, etc.), treat when pests or turf damage symptoms first appear. For subsurface pests (white grubs, june beetles, etc.), apply 10-14 days after egg-laying activity and/or when turf damage is first noticed. See DuoCide label for complete detail.

Irrigation Required

DuoCide must be watered in immediately after application. Upon contact with water, DuoCide granules will disperse into thousands of microparticles, moving the active ingredients through the turf canopy and into the soil. Wait until watering is complete and the area has dried before allowing pets or people to reenter.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this work on carpenter ants and termites
Answer: It works well for Ants
Question: Does this work on ant mounds
Answer: Ant mounds are exactly why I purchased this product, and it works very well. Sprinkle the product lightly over the mound and surrounding area (no need to over do), and then water very gently with light shower nozzle setting (do not cause runoff). Ant die off is quick and long-lasting. Product is toxic to aquatic life, so do no apply within 100 feet of lakes, lagoons, creeks or waterways.
Question: Pet friendly
Answer: I have been using these granules for many years- on my deck, garden, around my house perimeter... I have two small dogs. The product is pet & people friendly as long as you follow the directions on the Ortho label- "People and pets may re-enter area after product is watered in and allowed to dry"
Question: Does this work on crickets
Answer: Chickens and Guineas work great on crickets!

User questions & answers

Question: how is it applied
Answer: I applied by hand using a cup with wholes. But you can use a handheld spreader or a push spreader. What ever you use to put fertilizer down with.
Question: when is best time of year to apply
Answer: An easy way to remember: Apply in July when the beetles fly.
Question: Doesn't mention if/when small pets can be on the lawn. Does it say anywhere on the actual package
Answer: Eric's answer is nonsense. The active ingredient in this pesticide is imidacloprid. According to published testing at the Michigan State Extension Service, Cornell University et al, the instructions to apply imidacloprid to a lawn require you to water-in the product with a half inch of water. Once the lawn then dries after the watering it is safe for children and pests. Do your own query, that data is widely published. In fact, to make the point even more clearly, imidacloprid is approved by the EPA to be applied directly onto dogs over 7 weeks old as a flea treatment. Why people like Eric make their ridiculous postings is beyond me.
Question: This thing smells pretty evil. I want grubs to die but I feel the worse for my earthworms. Will this kill earthworms in the soil
Answer: As I said in my review, in addition to the grubs, it killed the earthworms in my lawn. It killed about a dozen worms per 10-square feet of turf.
