14 best bonide grub killers

Bonide is a well-known brand that produces various products for lawn and garden care, including pest control. Bonide offers several grub killers designed to target and eliminate grubs, which are the larval stage of certain beetles, including Japanese beetles, June bugs, and European chafers. Here's what you should know about Bonide grub killers:

  1. Grub Control: Bonide grub killers are formulated to control and eradicate grub infestations in lawns and gardens. Grubs can damage grass roots, leading to brown patches and weakened turf.

  2. Active Ingredients: Bonide grub killer products typically contain active ingredients like imidacloprid, clothianidin, or trichlorfon. These chemicals target grubs at various stages of their development.

  3. Application: Bonide grub killers come in various forms, including granules and liquid concentrates. The method of application may vary depending on the specific product, but generally, you'll need to spread or spray the product evenly over the affected area.

  4. Timing: Timing is essential when using grub killers. Applying the product at the right time of year is crucial because grubs are most vulnerable during specific stages of their life cycle. Late spring or early summer is often the best time for grub treatment, as this is when grubs are actively feeding near the soil surface.

  5. Follow Instructions: It's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions on the product label carefully. This includes information on the recommended application rate, timing, and safety precautions.

  6. Effectiveness: Bonide grub killers are generally effective at controlling grub infestations when used correctly. They can help prevent damage to your lawn caused by grubs, including brown patches and weakened grass.

  7. Preventative vs. Curative: Some Bonide products are designed for preventative grub control, while others are curative, meaning they are used to treat existing grub infestations. It's important to choose the right product based on your specific needs.

  8. Environmental Considerations: Always be mindful of the potential environmental impact of using chemical pesticides. Follow guidelines for safe and responsible pesticide use, and avoid over-application.

  9. Safety Precautions: When applying any pesticide, including Bonide grub killers, wear appropriate protective gear, such as gloves and eye protection. Keep children and pets away from treated areas until it's safe.

  10. Storage: Store Bonide grub killer products in a cool, dry place, and keep them out of the reach of children and pets.

Before using any pesticide product, it's a good practice to identify the specific pest problem you're dealing with and select the appropriate product accordingly. Additionally, consider alternative pest control methods, such as biological controls or cultural practices, as part of an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to maintain a healthy lawn and garden.

User questions & answers

Question: how is it applied
Answer: I applied by hand using a cup with wholes. But you can use a handheld spreader or a push spreader. What ever you use to put fertilizer down with.
Question: when is best time of year to apply
Answer: An easy way to remember: Apply in July when the beetles fly.
Question: Doesn't mention if/when small pets can be on the lawn. Does it say anywhere on the actual package
Answer: Eric's answer is nonsense. The active ingredient in this pesticide is imidacloprid. According to published testing at the Michigan State Extension Service, Cornell University et al, the instructions to apply imidacloprid to a lawn require you to water-in the product with a half inch of water. Once the lawn then dries after the watering it is safe for children and pests. Do your own query, that data is widely published. In fact, to make the point even more clearly, imidacloprid is approved by the EPA to be applied directly onto dogs over 7 weeks old as a flea treatment. Why people like Eric make their ridiculous postings is beyond me.
Question: This thing smells pretty evil. I want grubs to die but I feel the worse for my earthworms. Will this kill earthworms in the soil
Answer: As I said in my review, in addition to the grubs, it killed the earthworms in my lawn. It killed about a dozen worms per 10-square feet of turf.

User questions & answers

Question: Does it kill thrips
Answer: Although I don't grow Jasmine ground cover, I have used Ornamec around all the plants that I do grow. Remember that Ornamec is for grass not weeds! Read all the information that comes with Ornamec.
Question: Is this product organic
Answer: Read the label for specific information, so far it hasn't killed any thing but grass for me. I have sprayed it on Monkey grass with no apparent problems yet. I don't have any liatris. Please note it may take multiple applications to get the Bermuda gone and also that Bermuda does grow back (spreads) from its rhizomes so the battle is always ongoing. plan on using it for a while if not forever. I carefully spray it along the outer edge of the stones that edge my beds. That seems to help keep it out. Not perfect but it helps.
Question: Does this work for fungus gnats
Answer: The active ingredient in Ornamec is fluazafop. Used in the proper mix ratio, it will not kill Zoysia. In fact, it is used to control Bermuda grass in Zoysia on golf courses per USGA "Turfgrass and Environmental Research Online". Used alone, you may see some temporary yellowing of Zoysia. This can be mitigated by mixing with triclopyr (Turflon Ester and other name brands). Question: Has anyone used this to prevent squash borers? My zuchinni squash yield has been very poor for the last two years when only using insecticides
Answer: Most ornamental plants will not be damaged by Omamrc 170. None of mine have. However, I direct the spray to,the grasses and try to avoid directly spray toward the targeted grasses. Any incidental contact has not caused damage to the ornamentals.

Question: Will this help against cut worms also
Answer: Yes people us BT to kill Thrips.
Question: Is this product 100% organic
Answer: Yes. It's even in the product description. It's basically a naturally occurring bacteria that kills most caterpillars. You dilute the concentrate in the bottle and spray it on plants. When caterpillars eat the leaves, the ingest the bacteria which then kills them. From the product description:"Certified Organic Thuricide is a liquid formulation of bacteria, Bacillus Thuringiensis (Bt), which is specific to leaf eating caterpillars."
Question: I applied slug magic and it was gone the following day. I've used it for several years and this never happened. Does anyone know why
Answer: Hi, No, this particular BT will not work on Fungus Gnats. Different formulation than a product like Gnatrol WDG (even though both are BT's)

User questions & answers

Question: when using this how long do i have to keep my pets off the lawn
Answer: I do believe it is. My understanding is that the slugs eat this product (and they do love it) and then they stop eating. That is what kills them, it doesn't poison them.
Question: Is it safe around flowering plants
Answer: Don't know the answer for certain. My original thought in your case was that it was washed away by rain or your own watering BUT: I've applied it in past years and still still see the while granules around the plant after it rains, so that's probably not the reason it disappears. I like the product because it seems to be effective, and yet it's harmless to desirable wildlife like toads (I checked by calling the company's 1-800 line a few years ago, which you can also do - the number is on each container and they're helpful). Also we were at a garden center nursery yesterday and I asked about slug prevention. They specifically mentioned a product named "Sluggo" as a good choice.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this in my organic vegetable garden
Answer: Yes, I used it in my organic vegetable garden--and it worked! The active ingredient is castor oil, and the rest is sawdust, granite, and corn starch.
Question: Will this product really work on ground hogs
Answer: I put this down last summer I had a huge mole problem and one Dady groundhog. 2 days I put it on. I hadn't seen any moles after and nothing this summer. One ground hog showed up again this spring I put it over the lawn again and I haven't seen him or any miles again. Worked for me.
Question: WHAI ARE INGREDIANCES
Answer: castor oil is the main ingredient and the supposed one that drives the gophers/moles away. we've had mixed results using it.
Question: how long do the moles stay away from the treated area
Answer: I have had good success applying the product every other month (faithfully). It is rare for me to find gopher mounds. There tends to be more mole activity in the Spring, but oddly they tunnel along the edges of my lawn. I suspect this is where the product is least concentrated. If you are a new user, I would apply monthly for about three months, especially if you continue to see activity. My geographic location is N. California.

User questions & answers

Question: Works for golden pothos
Answer: You must keep your pets off the lawn until you water it in and the lawn completely dries. I gave it a few extra days because the pellets do not all dissolve at the same time. I had better luck using a product with a hose and sprayer and liquid product. Also children should stay off the lawn the same amount of time.
Question: Does this work on orchids outside
Answer: I experienced no problems around my plants. I have found all the Bonide products work as well or better than advertised. I went to their website. It's very informative.
Question: Does this kill the thrips
Answer: I don't know what Rollie pollies are and don't recall ever seeing them in my area. I live in Michigan and I have slugs when it's very wet and humid. This product is the best thing I've ever found for riding them from my yard. I'm sorry I've never seen these in my yard and I've been here over thirty years. Must be found in a warmer climate then here, our winter's are long and cold. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Question: Can you use this in conjunction with bti, or will the bonide kill the bti? have both to use to eradicate fungus gnats

    Question: will it harm earthworms
Answer: I no longer have the box it came but the tank has "20020" in raised plastic written on it. However, in looking at the item listed as 'Chapin 20020" there is a differnce in the wand tip, the spray lever does not lock 'on' (looks like there is a place for piece of plastic to slide for locking), and there may be a few other differences. It may be that Chapin uses the same tank and takes away some bits of plastic to make stripped down models.
Question: Can I use with crabgrass preventer
Answer: This is NOT the right model for spraying sealers and/or stains. The correct models are 25010, 25012, 25020, and 30600. See the Chapin website.
Question: Does this kill Vine Weevil grubs? Thank you
Answer: It will vary based on the product you are using so read the directions carefully for every product you spray. But in general, 1 gallon for 1,000 sq. ft. That said, I just used it on a lawn bowling green which is about 14,000 sq. ft. The pesticide I used said 1 gallon to cover 1,000 sq. ft. That would have been 12 gallons to cover the green, but when I had finished I used half that amount. This may have been because I walked too fast (I walked about the pace I do when I spread fertilizer). So, depending on how fast you walk, how comprehensive you want your coverage to be, and what the pesticide label suggest, I would say 1 gallon covers at least 1,000 sq. ft and at most 2,000 sq. ft. I also recommend using a dye/colorant so you can tell where you have sprayed and how think the coverage is.
