12 best 2 stroke engine oils
2-stroke engine oil, also known as two-stroke engine oil or 2T oil, is a specialized lubricating oil used in 2-stroke engines commonly found in outdoor power tools, such as chainsaws, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, and scooters. Here's what you need to know about 2-stroke engine oil:
Lubrication and Mixing: 2-stroke engines require a mixture of gasoline and 2-stroke oil for lubrication. Unlike 4-stroke engines, which have a separate oil reservoir, 2-stroke engines do not have an oil sump. Instead, the oil is mixed with the gasoline before it enters the engine.
Smoke and Smell: 2-stroke engines tend to produce more smoke and emit a distinctive odor compared to 4-stroke engines. This is because the oil is burned along with the gasoline during combustion.
Oil-to-Gas Ratio: The ratio of oil to gasoline in the fuel mixture is critical for proper engine lubrication. The specific ratio may vary depending on the manufacturer's recommendations and the engine's design. Common ratios include 50:1 and 40:1, meaning 50 parts gasoline to 1 part oil, or 40 parts gasoline to 1 part oil, respectively.
Types of 2-Stroke Oil: There are different types of 2-stroke engine oil, including mineral oil, synthetic oil, and semi-synthetic oil. Synthetic oils tend to provide better engine protection and performance, especially in high-performance applications, but they may be more expensive.
TC-W3 and JASO Ratings: When selecting 2-stroke oil, it's essential to look for products that meet industry standards and have the appropriate certifications. TC-W3 (for marine applications) and JASO (Japanese Automotive Standards Organization) ratings are common certifications that ensure the oil meets specific performance and environmental standards.
Pre-Mix vs. Oil Injection: Some 2-stroke engines have an oil injection system that automatically mixes the oil and gasoline as needed. Others require users to manually mix the oil and gasoline before filling the tank. The type of engine will determine how you should prepare the fuel mixture.
Storage and Shelf Life: 2-stroke engine oil should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. It has a shelf life, so it's important to check the expiration date and not use oil that has expired, as it may not provide proper lubrication.
Environmental Considerations: Proper disposal of used 2-stroke oil is essential to prevent environmental harm. Many areas have recycling centers or collection points for used oil to ensure it is disposed of safely.
Manufacturer's Recommendations: Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the type and brand of 2-stroke oil to use in your specific engine.Using the wrong oil or an incorrect oil-to-gas ratio can lead to engine damage.
Performance Benefits: Using high-quality 2-stroke oil that meets or exceeds industry standards can help extend the life of your engine, improve performance, reduce carbon buildup, and minimize exhaust emissions.
It's crucial to consult the owner's manual of your 2-stroke engine equipment and follow the manufacturer's guidelines for fuel and oil mixture ratios and oil specifications to ensure optimal performance and longevity of your equipment.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is 6 oz ok for my 80cc bike I have a 1 gal tank and I need 20:1 for after breaking in and 16:1 for breaking in need a response fast I need oil |
Answer: | you can make the mix what ever you want just read the mix instructions |
Question: | I have never used this before. Do i need to buy anything else for my trimmer |
Answer: | I assume you have a 2 cycle trimmer. Read the manual on the correct oil/gas mixture. Most American built trimmers use a 40:1 or 50:1 mixture. 40:1 is 2.6 oz. per gallon. A little less oil if 50:1. Chinese 2 cycle motors still use 25:1 or 20:1 oil mixture. Use 5.1 oz. of oil per gallon of gas for 25:1 or a little more if 20:1 mixture. |
Question: | How many gallons will this treat if one whole 16 oz bottle is used |
Answer: | I use 50:1. That takes 2 oz per gallon so I get 8 gallons per bottle. It is great having the squeeze section so you can precisely measure before filling gas can. |
Question: | What size (oz) is the measure cup on top? Say I neeeded 3.2 oz |
Answer: | It has numerous markings including 32 to 1 or 3.2 oz there is a graduated scale on the side, loosen the cap and squeeze gently until the desired amount is reached. Should you decide to go with this, I used a sharpie to highlight the markings to make then easier to read |

Six Pack Of Echo OEM 2.6 fl oz PowerBlend® XTended Life Oil
Part # 6450001
6 2.6 oz Bottles
1 Bottle to One Gallon of Gas
- Echo 6 Pack of 1 Gallon Power Blend Oil Mix (50:1) 6450001
User questions & answers
Question: | How do I make it 25:1 ratio |
Answer: | Usually the ratio is 50:1, that's a little container of two cycle oil (2.6 oz) to one gallon of gas. To make 25:1 use the 2.6 oz two cycle oil to a 1/2 gallon of gas. That's the simple way. I just got a two cycle engine that's Chinese made and this appears to be the trend so I tend to think it may be important to get the extra oil in the mix just to be safe. |
Question: | Does this product contain Fuel Stabilizer |
Answer: | Yes, it does contain Fuel Stabilizer. Great for off season to help jets from getting clogged and keeping fuel fresh. Highly recommended. Its what I use in all my 2 stroke motors. |
Question: | Is this a synthetic oil? If not I bought it for nothing |
Answer: | It states right on the bottle's label that it's a synthetic blend, which typically means it's part petroleum and part synthetic. I've been using the Echo branded 50:1 oil in my Echo weedeater (now 18 years old) and Echo leaf blower (now 20 years old), and with seasonal maintenance and proper care, both still start and run like they did when they were new. |
Question: | First time user...what are the directions |
Answer: | One gallon of gas to one 2.6 oz bottle of oil equals the 50 to 1 ratio. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I used jones red oil in the past. it’s been a year since i have mixed gas. do i need to be concerned about compatibility |
Answer: | If the gas is a year old you need to throw it out |
Question: | Will this work on a 3cycle rotertiller |
Answer: | Don't think there has ever been a 3 cycle motor. If you mean 2 cycle rototiller it will work fine. |
Question: | Can this be used in 40:1 machines |
Answer: | I run this mix at 40-1 in all 3 of my Husqvarna chainsaws two of the call for 50-1 mix. I used to run it at 32-1 as one of my saws, a 1978 husky 480 CD requires 40-1. I prefer to keep my saws around for a while and not have them seize up. |
Question: | first time having to use this - may be a dumb question but I have to mix with gasoline correct |
Answer: | Correct. If using this your machine is most likely a 2 stroke machine. You need to find out what ratio the manufacturer recomends for the machine you are using it in. Mix the gas and oil to the correct ratio and then add it to the machine. I recommend getting a small 1 gallon gas can specifically for your mixed solution. Gas nowadays goes bad quick, so if you are not using much, only mix around 1 gallon at a time. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this truly a 6pk? does this replace- husqvarna 2.6 oz low smoke formula 2-cycle engine oil 6-pack |
Answer: | The one I bought was a six pack. Not sure on your replacement question. I used this oil in my Husky backpack blower and Husky chainsaw. Works great. Hint: I was a professional tree trimmer for many years. One thing we learned with the newer generation of high rev saws such as Stihl and Huskys was to mix the oil a little heavier than called for. The way we did it was to use a gallon can to mix in. We put a little gas in first and then poured in the oil and shook it up good. Then pour a little gas in the now empty oil bottle, put the cap on and shake it good and pour that in the gallon can. We did that a couple times to get every bit of the oil. We then put the rest of the gas in the gallon can, but we didn't quite fill it all the way to the gallon line. The end result was the saw would put out just a bit of smoke. Which is a good thing when using these high revving engines. Kept them from seizing up under hard use, and more so in the summer. |
Question: | Is this oil jaso fd certified |
Answer: | yes and it ha s performed very well for me |
Question: | is this a six pack or 1 (2.6 oz) bottle |
Answer: | Yes, it is. (From the write up on Amazon— "Product description: Husqvarna HP High Performance 2 Stroke Oil 2.6oz 6 Pack"... so when I ordered it I was expecting 6 and was NOT disappointed. So YES: it is a blister pack of 6 each 2.6 ounce Husqvarna HP High Performance 2 Stroke Oil.) |
Question: | would this oil work for my electrial genarator |
Answer: | If only it requires oil mix for gasoline. I have the generator and it just requires regular unleaded gasoline not the oil mix. Read the manual for the generator? |

Product description
HP 2-C is a high performance engine oil that improves performance and dramatically reduces wear in two-cycle gasoline engines. It’s recommended for use in both pre-mixed and oil injected gasoline two-cycle engines in outboard motors, motorcycles, jet skis, chain saws, etc. HP 2-C increases horsepower and reduces fuel consumption, heat, wear and emissions. Its synthetic solvency keeps spark plugs and exhaust ports clean as well. Its performance advantages come from a blend of synthetic oils plus Royal Purple’s proprietary Synerlec additive technology. Synerlec significantly increases the oil film strength for optimum engine efficiency and maximum protection. HP 2-C is suitable for premix in snowmobiles, however, due to cold soak (low temperature pumpability issues with oil injected snowmobiles) Royal Purple recommends Snow 2-C for operation in temperatures below 20 degree Fahrenheit.
Motor oil is made from crude oil and is used to lubricate, clean, and cool engines. Types of motor oil include conventional, synthetic, diesel, bio-based, hybrid (blends of conventional and synthetic), and recycled oils. Motor oil varies in weight and viscosity, as well as additives that some manufacturers add to the oil during the refining process. A numerical code system created by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) grades motor oils according to viscosity--the higher the number between 0 and 60, the more viscous (thicker) the oil is. Most consumer motor oils are graded by two numbers, with the first number indicating cold weather (Winter or "W") performance.
2-Stroke Engine Oil
This oil is specifically designed for 2-stroke (or 2-cycle) engines. 2-stroke engines are typically "total-loss lubrication" engines, meaning that this oil will burn up in the combustion chamber when the engine is on and will need to be replaced regularly. Common uses of 2-stroke oil are some motorcycles, lawnmowers, snowmobiles, marine outboard motors, and other small-engine devices.
Full Synthetic Oil
This oil is a full synthetic oil, meaning crude oil is not used in making it. Synthetic oil can be used in vehicle engines instead of motor oils refined from crude oil, and often provides superior mechanical performance over traditional motor oil, including increased gas mileage and reduced engine wear at extreme temperatures. Its complex method of production means it can often cost more than conventional motor oil.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this oil for 2 stroke dirt bikes? i have a kawasaki kx250. is this a good choice |
Answer: | I rode dirt bikes for 25 years. I have used all kinds of 2 stroke oils during that time. Royal Purple is one of the best in my opinion and in the opinion of the mechanics at the bike shop I go to. Being synthetic is a huge deal also. It burns almost smokeless with very little carbon build up. I use it in all my 2 stroke motors like the weed wacker, chain saw, and back pack blower. I run it at about 45 to 1 ratio. Love it, buy it!!!! |
Question: | how can gas have high performance |
Answer: | Not knowing the context of your inquiry, I cannot respond to your question as to high performance... I use Royal Purple HP-2C (Synthetic two stroke oil) in my 1987 Yamaha Jog 50cc motor scooter and am delighted with the results it has given me. The bike has shown a marked increase in areas such as much easier starting and now produces nearly zero smoke when running even though it is a 30 yr old vintage two stroke machine. When I bought it, she smoked like someone puffing on a stogie so I'm assuming the previous owner used some brand of inexpensive off brand two stroke oil. I recommend Royal Purple HP-2C Synthetic Oil for use in any 2 cycle application IF your looking for improved results in your particular application. |
Question: | My snowblower uses 32:1 will this be ok to use in it |
Answer: | I would say yes. should work just fine. Mix ratio is 24:1 to 100:1 I use it my model plane gas engines @ 32:1 and it is very clean burning. The best 2 cycle oil I have used. Used to run honda HP2 for years but like this much better. Hope this helps |
Question: | what is its rating? JASO FC or FD, ISO-L-EGD |
Answer: | Not sure. STIHL (made in USA), Echo, and Husqvarna are rated JASO-FD and ISO L-EGD. Briggs and Stratton has no certs. I wish they would list this information on Amazon. Inhad to read it directly off the bottles. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there a real difference between husqvarna xp and hp |
Answer: | Check the Husq website. it seems there is HP, XP and XP plus. |
Question: | Is this 2-cycle oil multi ratio? I have older 32:1 & newer 50:1, can this be used in any 2-cycle equipment |
Answer: | I believe that if you use 1.5 times as much 50:1, you will be very close to 32:1. |
Question: | How much gasoline are these premeasured to be mixed wit |
Answer: | These are 6.4 oz bottles. It says right on the front to mix with 2.5 gal gas (to achieve a 50:1 ratio). 2.5 gal = 320 oz. and so 320:6.4 = 50:1. |
Question: | What is the shelf life of this |
Answer: | Unopened up to five years. Opened varies if closed, left open, temperature and if stored in a dark area. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I realize that this works in a 50:1, but can it be used in a |
Answer: | I am not in a place to "second guess" the manufacturer of your device, but I know that oil products have improved over the years. I was a hands-on mechanic with 2-stroke equipment for a lot of years and I've seen the required mix go from 20:1 to 50:1 and higher. Some of this is due to the materials used in the equipment and some of this is due to the fact that newer oils have higher film strength. I believe this Stihl product is a full synthetic oil. I don't believe that running this stuff at the 50:1 ratio will hurt anything, but I also believe that increasing the mix ratio on this stuff to 40:1 will not cause problems with your current equipment and might only show itself as an occasional fouled spark plug. |
Question: | Why is the same package only $14.99 in the little hardware in town |
Answer: | Yeah. I just bought mine for $1.95 each locally. |
Question: | Can this product be stored in below freezing temperatures during the winter |
Answer: | Absolutely! It stays in my shed all winter and I have to say that since switching my machines to this synthetic oil they have never ran better. I have been using full synthetic oil in my vehicles since around 1980. I have NEVER had any engine issues with any of my vehicles and some of them I have racked up over 200,000 miles on before I traded them away. |
Question: | Why is this $5 more then in a retail store |
Answer: | I just paid $1.99/ea at Ace - the expensive hardware store. And the chain oil that's $42+ here? I paid $15.99. I've been noticing a lot of stuff is cheaper at the store lately. |
