11 best high speed modem

A high-speed modem, often referred to simply as a modem, is a crucial networking device that facilitates internet connectivity for homes and businesses. It falls within the category of networking products, computer accessories, and electronics. Here's what you need to know about high-speed modems:

  1. Functionality: A modem, short for "modulator-demodulator," is a device that modulates (converts) digital data from a computer or network into analog signals for transmission over various communication channels, such as telephone lines, coaxial cables, or fiber-optic lines. It also demodulates incoming analog signals back into digital data that computers can understand.

  2. Internet Connectivity: High-speed modems are specifically designed to provide fast internet access. They support high data transfer rates, enabling users to access the internet quickly and efficiently. Common types of high-speed modems include DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) modems, cable modems, and fiber-optic modems.

  3. DSL Modems: DSL modems are used for broadband internet connections over traditional telephone lines. They come in various speeds (e.g., ADSL, VDSL) and are commonly used in residential settings.

  4. Cable Modems: Cable modems use cable television lines to deliver high-speed internet. They are prevalent in both residential and business environments and offer faster speeds than DSL in many cases.

  5. Fiber-Optic Modems: Fiber-optic modems are used for connections over fiber-optic networks, which provide extremely high-speed internet access. Fiber-optic connections are known for their speed and reliability.

  6. Compatibility: It's essential to choose a modem that is compatible with your internet service provider (ISP) and the type of internet connection you have (e.g., DSL, cable, fiber). ISPs often provide a list of approved modems that work well with their services.

  7. Router vs. Modem: While modems handle the connection to your ISP, routers are responsible for distributing the internet connection to multiple devices within your home or business. Many modern devices combine both modem and router functions in one unit (known as a modem-router combo) for convenience.

  8. Upgrading for Speed: If you experience slow internet speeds, upgrading to a higher-speed modem can often improve your internet experience. However, it's crucial to ensure that your ISP supports the higher speed.

  9. Security: Modems can have security features to protect your network, such as firewall capabilities. It's essential to configure these settings to keep your network secure.

  10. Maintenance: Regularly updating the firmware of your modem and ensuring it is free from physical obstructions or interference can help maintain optimal performance.

When choosing a high-speed modem, it's essential to consider your specific internet requirements, including the type of internet service available in your area and the speed you need for your online activities. Additionally, consult with your ISP or review their recommended modem options to ensure compatibility and performance.

User questions & answers

Question: How is this model different than the arris surfboard sb
Answer: The sb6121 only has speeds of 172 Mbps download and up to 131 Mbps upload. This model has up to 343 Mbps download and 131 Mbps upload.
Question: Going with the cable modem option what’s the best router to pair this with for spectrum
Answer: It depends on your needs. Needs are based on the number of devices connected and the size of area you are trying to cover. I would highly recommend a mesh network unless your home is 1200sqft or smaller. A centrally located router could cover that. The biggest problem is getting the 5ghz frequency to reach throughout the home. The 5ghz gives you speeds over 30mbps on wireless devices. 5ghz will reach roughly 40ft in all directions from your access point (ap). A mesh system gives you multiple ap and thus more area covered by the 5ghz.
Question: How many devices can connect at once? Is that that the 8x refers to
Answer: The 8x doesn't refer to the number of devices you can connect to it. You only want to connect one device and that's your WiFi router. You wireless router determines how many devices can be connect based on the available number of ip addresses on the wireless device. The 8x refers to the speed of Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS). Its informing you on the speed of DOCSIS 2.0 vs the newer DOCSIS 3.0. Ultimately your speed will be determined by how much you want to pay your internet provider. And you can determine how many devices you want to connect by the router you choose.
Question: Do I also have to buy a router for the modem? And to make sure it obviously speeds up internet connection right
Answer: If you only need to have one computer hooked up to the internet you do not need a router. If you want to hook up more than one computer or if you want a wireless network, you will need to buy the appropriate router. My internet speed went from 20mb to 100mb(the speed I pay extra for). TWC has also stopped charging me $8.00 a month for the use of their inadequate equipment.

User questions & answers

Question: Why does it say 4x ethernet ports in your description where there is only one
Answer: Because Amazon hasn't corrected their product subscription. I submitted one two weeks ago and has yet to be done. If you need more than 1 ethernet port, then this one is not for you. This has only (1) 2.5 Multi-Gig port.
Question: Does netgear cm500-1aznas work with tds provider
Answer: Yes. But you need to call the TDS customer service and provide your CMAC or SN to register your device. These numbers are on the box and the unit
Question: Can you use a phone to ethernet splitter for voice to work
Answer: I have never heard of a phone to internet splitter, at least not expressed in those terms. However, for VOIP (which means Voice Over Internet Protocall), you must have at least one phone jack in a modem, or a modem-router combination. Some modems have two such jacks, which could provide two different "lines." Most importantly, you must have your internet service provider's PERMISSION to install and use such a modem, or modem-router combination! My own ISP (Wow, aka Wowway.com) REFUSED to give such permission because that would cut into their profits, since they would no longer receive a monthly FEE to RENT their age-old junk, much of which are at least five years old, which is like a millenia in this day of super-fast-paced electronic offerings. I had to send back every VOIP-capable modem I bought from Amazon and other places because my ISP REFUSED to enable them to work with their so-called service(s). Talk about anti-competitive business practices ... U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), are you paying any attention?
Question: I understand that this modem says it will only work with xfinity. but has anyone tried this with spectrum? (aka time warner cable
Answer: Hello. I am writing this Dec 2, 2020 and just activated this modem 2 days ago with Spectrum. It is not on the list of approved modems, but oddly enough the CM400 is. I just told the tech support who activated it that it was compatible and it's worked fine with no problems. I went from 100-120 mbs on my 100 mb plan to 250 to 450 mbs, still on the 100 mb plan. This modem is not on the list of approved models but it seems to work fine so far without periodic latency/drops like the Arris model from Spectrum had.

Speed references are provided, marketed, and sold by your broadband service provider and not Linksys. Actual performance, including network speed and data throughput rate, may vary. Performance depends upon many factors, conditions, and variables, including products used, number of users accessing the Internet, type of traffic generated by each user (interactive browsing versus video streaming), interference, and other adverse conditions. User questions & answers

Question: is it compatible with netgear nighthawk x6 router
Answer: Will work with any router especially a better but any router i s fine
Question: This is a modem/router or just a modem
Answer: Router and Modem combined. Router has all the functionality you need for home network. Firewall/DHCP/Port forwarding etc. I just put my wireless router in Firewall/DHCP OFF and made it a wireless access point. Plugged the DM200 into a LAN port of the wireless router and now all wireless clients have internet/LAN access. Great having a router/modem in one box under $100.I have Century Link. They are unfortunate souls....clueless. They couldnt make their ADSL2+ modem work. Come to find out they have VDSL and didnt know it. What a bunch of bozo's :) Once I had my PPPoE login and password the DM200 took it from there.Firewall test show the DM200 is totally stealth. DM200 is easy to configure and a great little Router/Modem combo.
Question: Will this work with at&t dsl
Answer: Be certain it is actual AT&T DSL not UVerse DSL. The line between the two is often blurred in many areas.
Question: Will this work with windstream vdsl (not bonded
Answer: I have it. Yes. You have to set it up as vdsl pppoe. Search up the user manual for it and go to that section.

User questions & answers

Question: what is the range on this modem. we are having trouble picking up a strong signal. Moden router is downstairs and the streaming tv is upstairs. Thanks
Answer: Depending on how many walls or floors and the materials it has to pass through, I suspect the range to be able 100-150 feet. We have this router in an office building and the plaza next door to us (approx 250 feet) can see our signal. Downstairs and through a concrete floor, people who are only 20 feet away can get 1 bar of reception because the signal is trying to pass through cement. If you're using this with a wood floor, carpet or tile, you should still be getting decent signal.
Question: Is this modem compatible with window 8.1 devices
Answer: Yes. I am using 8 Windows 8.1 devices, and multiple TVs, Roku boxes, Android phones and tablets as well as several DirecTV receivers in wireless and wired situations. It should be compatible with pretty much anything that uses a wired or wireless connection.
Question: is this better and faster than the westell ultra line 3 i have from verizon. and if i buy this one can i hook it directly up with no problems
Answer: I know it was better than the one I got from Verizon-much faster, and no problem what ever in hooking it up. Buying this was the best thing I did. I plugged it in, and that was it-simple.
Question: Will this work with Verizon Fios Quantum
Answer: It is not compatible with Verizon FIOS at all, at least that was written on the box I received (although not mentioned anywhere on the description on the site).
Question: I have a smart tv that does not have wifi, will this box bring the internet to my tv
Answer: No, you will need some kind of adapter to the TV that sorts out TV feeds. I highly recommend Amazon FireTV or Roku for that. This router (box) connects that TV device to the internet, enabling your TV to receive Netflix, Amazon Prime TV, etc.
Question: Does this router come with a small stand to prop it up? (so it has a smaller footprint, similar to AT&T modems propped vertically
Answer: This one does not have a stand, however it does have a mount that allows you to mount the router to the wall.
Question: Is it possible to create 2 independent networks with this router
Answer: I don't know. I am not using it now since I got U-verse. AT&T sells their own router.
Question: can any body tell me the range for this device please
Answer: The specs and features indicate it is for a small home. I would assume that it means a one-bedroom one-level home, depending on whether you have cement or wood-frame, two-bedroom with more of an open plan could still possibly work fine. http://us.dlink.com/products/connect/wireless-n150-home-router/

User questions & answers

Question: Does this have the Linksys Parent Control software like their routers
Answer: You will not need a modem as it is a modem and router in one and it is compatible with xfinity service.
Question: does it works with optimum
Answer: There are 4 gigabit Ethernet ports. Not sure why this isn't listed clearly everywhere, I had the same question."Ports:4 x Gigabit Ethernet 1x USB 2.0 port Cable: F-type female 75 ohm PowerNumber of Ethernet Ports:4x Gigabit LAN ports "source = http://www.linksys.com/us/p/P-CG7500/
Question: does it compatible with xfinity modem
Answer: The SBG6782-AC is a MoCA enabled Router and would require that you use other MoCA Adapters on your network to communicate with the SBG6782-AC and create a MoCA Network. When you get adapters, be sure to enable MoCA on the SBG6782-AC (Basic --> MoCA) after you add the other MoCA Adapters on you in-house Cable Network. Also note, that once you enable MoCA on the SBG6782-AC "Privacy" will be enabled by default and you want to turn that off as your adapters likely do not have that enabled. ARRIS also has good information on configuring both your SBG6782-AC and SURFboard MoCA Adapters via and just select the product of choice and the topic in general FAQs.
Question: No images of the back of this thing...is this wi-fi only or are there ethernet ports for PCs
Answer: I replaced my Arris / Motorola 6580 with the 6782 for two reasons: The WiFi range sucked on the 6580 and I didn't want to spend the $8/month rental fee anymore, among a number of Xfinity charges I'm trying to pare back. As for Wifi signal, the 6782 is a vast improvement over the 6580, where I couldn't get anything to connect to it that was more than a few feet away, and if it was downstairs, forget it! I now own the 6782 and have even added a Netgear EX6200 WiFi Range extender. I now have complete, strong coverage, encrypted, all over the house (three story townhome).

User questions & answers

Question: How warm does this modem run? Some of the more recent SB modems ran too hot, leading to early failure
Answer: Handling of heat was definitely considered in the MB7420 design. All cable modems generate heat, the good designs get rid of the heat efficiently. The MB7420 is very well ventilated on both sides and on the top, and has robust heat sinks on the circuit board to dissipate the heat. The vertical design also helps air circulation. The two year warranty is the longest in the industry and speaks to the durability of the product. With that said, definitely do not operate the MB7420 on its side. The MB7420 is intended to be in a vertical position.
Question: Are the leds insanely bright like on other motorola modems
Answer: Whether the LEDs have the right amount of brightness is an opinion. The MB7420 LED brightness was reduced in response to user reviews on earlier modem designs. Definitely attention was paid to the output level and the electronic design throttled back the brightness. You will probably find it a good, but can't say for sure. Your opinion would be welcome.
Question: Can the stabilizing foot be removed so the modem can lay on its side? Is it screwed/clipped on
Answer: The foot is attached with 2 screws under the label. It is designed to stand up on the foot to allow for adequate cooling for the modem at high speeds. It is not designed to lay flat on its side with one panel blocked. It is recommended that both side panels and the top not be blocked. Laying it on its side and blocking the ventilation could produce improper operation and unit failure.
Question: Is this part of the arris motorola surfboard line up of modems
Answer: No, it is not. This is a much newer design. The MB7420 has a Full Band Capture Digital Tuner, upgraded power handling to protect against lightning and power surges, robust heat sinks to handle a broad temperature range. And the MB7420 looks a lot better than the Arris SB6141.
