13 best cast iron fireplace inserts

A cast iron fireplace insert is a type of heating appliance designed to be inserted into an existing fireplace or used as a standalone unit in outdoor fireplaces, fire pits, or patio settings. These inserts are known for their durability, heat retention, and classic aesthetics. Here's what you need to know about cast iron fireplace inserts:

  1. Material: Cast iron is a popular choice for fireplace inserts because of its excellent heat-retaining properties. It can radiate heat for an extended period, even after the fire has burned out.

  2. Design: Cast iron fireplace inserts often feature intricate and decorative designs, which add a touch of elegance and charm to indoor or outdoor spaces. They are available in various styles, from traditional to contemporary, allowing you to choose one that matches your aesthetic preferences.

  3. Efficiency: These inserts can significantly improve the efficiency of an open fireplace by directing heat into the room rather than letting it escape up the chimney. This can help reduce heating costs in the winter.

  4. Installation: Installing a cast iron fireplace insert typically involves placing it within an existing masonry or wood-burning fireplace. Some models can also be used in zero-clearance fireplaces or as standalone units in outdoor settings.

  5. Fuel Options: Cast iron fireplace inserts can burn various fuels, including wood, natural gas, propane, or even pellets. The choice of fuel can impact the heating efficiency and convenience of the insert.

  6. Maintenance: Cast iron inserts require regular maintenance to ensure they remain in good condition. This may include cleaning the interior, inspecting and replacing gaskets, and ensuring proper ventilation.

  7. Safety: Safety is essential when using cast iron fireplace inserts. Ensure that the insert is installed correctly and follow all safety guidelines for its operation. This includes using a spark guard to prevent embers from escaping.

  8. Indoor vs. Outdoor Use: While cast iron fireplace inserts are commonly used indoors, they can also be installed in outdoor fireplaces and fire pits. When used outdoors, they can create a cozy and inviting ambiance for outdoor gatherings.

  9. Heat Output: The heat output of a cast iron fireplace insert can vary based on its size, design, and fuel type. Some models are primarily decorative, while others are designed for substantial heating.

Cast iron fireplace inserts are an excellent choice for homeowners who want to enhance the aesthetics and functionality of their existing fireplaces or create cozy outdoor heating solutions. They offer both practical heating benefits and a timeless, classic look that can elevate the atmosphere of any space.

User questions & answers

Question: Can i fasten the fireback to the back wall
Answer: Not as it comes. It would need to be drilled or perhaps there are accompanying brackets that can be purchased seperately for that application.
Question: Are there any requirements/recommendation for first time use? Do I need to "cure" it with smaller fires vs just using it with multiple size fires
Answer: None that I am aware of, I just placed it in the back of the fireplace and started a fire. 2nd year in use with no problems.
Question: Does it really need feet, or is it heavy enough that it will stay put once installed on the back of the fireplace
Answer: It might look better with feet. However, it's plenty heavy enough. I placed mine with the bottom about 2 inches from the back of the fireplace and leaned it back. Looks great. I purchased it to help save the brick from deteriorating on the back of our 1880's walk in fireplace.
Question: How much hight do the feet add
Answer: I did not buy the feet as they are not necessary. I just propped it up in the back and it works fine.

Answer: I love mine and have no issue with the metal piece! looks real to me like who is going to get in the fireplace and look!!!
Question: if the flames in the background stay the same or do they have motion like they are actually flaming up? Thanks

Copperfield 61302 23 Inch One Piece Cast Iron Grate, 23 Inch Front x 18 Inch Back x 12 Inch Deep, Leg Height 2 1/8 Inch, 19lbs

Product description

A practical and functional one-piece grate. The simple design will work perfectly in your wood-burning fireplace. 23" One Piece Cast Iron Grate, 23" Front X 18" Back X 12" Deep, Leg Height 2 1/8", 19lbs

User questions & answers

Question: will this not bend over time with very hot fires that can go for 10+ hours at a time. the screen I put over grate now gets deformed with the heat
Answer: I have this grate for 2 winters. And it doesn't warp or bend after prolong use. But keep in mind that the little factory build fireplace box this crate designed for will not last long. This fireplace is obviously designed for looks, not for heavy duty use. If you make long hot fires, the insulating inside panels will eventually erode and crack. There are replacement panels available for $150-200 each, and I don't know how to replace them without taking the entire box out of the wall. Bottom line: This grate is the most long lasting part of your fireplace, it will outlive the other parts.
Question: I read headquarters are in iowa; however, is the grate manufactured in the usa
Answer: I have it for two years, and it is the best part of fireplace. It has cast lettering on it "VESTEL USA 1987" (may be 1967 hard to tell). So I guess the cast form was made about 30 or 50 years ago.I don't care where is actually manufactured. It is good, and already outliving the rest of factory build in USA fireplace, which I cannot say a good word about.
Question: someone please use a tape measure and give me the precise info, what are the outside dimensions? please, thx
Answer: I don't have one in front of me at the moment, but I do have the measurements that I, myself, had taken from a few years ago. I can't imagine that they have modified the mold, so these should be what you are looking for:This is crafted of ~1/2" thick Cast Iron and finished a Semi-gloss Black. Measures 5" High x 22.5" Wide at the top (18" at the rear - note that it tapers back) x 12" Deep. The Base "Footprint" is 19" Wide (16.5" for the back Feet) x 7.25" Deep. The Legs are right about 2.25" Tall and the Grate holds the logs ~2.75" from the floor. There is ~1" of space between the individual Ribs of the Grate. As before, these measurements are from a sample that I received a few years ago, but they should be exactly the same.I hope that this helps,Lauren of Aiden's Hearth
Question: Does the copperfield 61302 grate have hollow legs? - Display picture on Amazon shows them to be hollow looking on top, ashes will drop in them
Answer: No they are not hollow legs. This is the very best fire grate we have ever had. In fact we found to be more safe when burning logs in the fireplace. It keeps the logs off the fire bricks and keeps any smoke coming out into the room. Highly recommend this fire grate!! Hope this helps with your question.
