13 best peanut butter for birds
Peanut butter for birds is a popular and nutritious treat that bird enthusiasts often use to attract and feed wild birds in their backyards. Here's what you need to know about peanut butter as bird food:
Feeding Birds: Peanut butter is a high-energy food source that is rich in fats and proteins, making it an excellent choice for providing supplemental nutrition to wild birds, especially during cold winter months when natural food sources may be scarce.
Types of Peanut Butter: Not all peanut butter is suitable for feeding birds. It's important to use unsalted, unsweetened, and creamy peanut butter. Avoid peanut butter with added flavorings, preservatives, or artificial sweeteners, as these can be harmful to birds.
Serving Methods: Peanut butter for birds is typically offered in one of the following ways:
Peanut Butter Feeders: Specialized bird feeders designed to hold jars or suet-style containers of peanut butter. These feeders often have perches or platforms for birds to land on while they feed.
Pine Cones: Peanut butter can be spread on pine cones and then rolled in birdseed. Hang these pine cone feeders from trees or hooks in your backyard.
Logs or Boards: You can smear peanut butter directly onto wooden logs or boards and sprinkle birdseed on top. Birds can perch on these surfaces and feed.
Homemade Feeders: Some bird enthusiasts create their own homemade peanut butter feeders using materials like PVC pipes or recycled containers.
Variety: To attract a diverse range of bird species, consider mixing in other bird-friendly ingredients with the peanut butter, such as birdseed, crushed nuts, or dried fruits.
Seasonal Feeding: Peanut butter is especially beneficial during cold weather when birds need extra energy to keep warm. However, it can be offered year-round as a supplement to their diet.
Monitoring: Keep an eye on the peanut butter feeders to ensure they remain clean and fresh. In hot weather, peanut butter can become rancid, so it's important to replace it regularly.
Bird Species Attracted: Peanut butter is known to attract various bird species, including woodpeckers, chickadees, nuthatches, and titmice. It's a favorite among many backyard birds.
Caution: While peanut butter is generally safe for birds, it's essential to be mindful of potential issues like contamination with mold or bacteria. Ensure that the feeding containers and surfaces remain clean to prevent any health concerns.
In summary, peanut butter for birds is a popular and nutritious treat that can be used to attract a variety of wild bird species to your backyard. When used correctly and with the right precautions, it can be a valuable addition to your backyard bird feeding efforts, providing birds with essential energy and nutrients, especially during colder seasons.

Question: | What do you use to feed it to the birds: a wire suet feeder?-- what dimensions |
Answer: | we use a suet feeder with 4 wire "boxes" attached to a piece of strong wood. it is hung from a tree branch with an 18 inch baffle above it to keep our friendly squirrels from attacking the suet. we feed all year round and use this particular suet 12 months a year. it is non--melting and our birds, including woodpeckers love it! highly recommend! |
Question: | Do cardinals eat this |
Answer: | Cardinals are in the finch family and love the peAnut butter. We've had woodpeckers and many others, too. Birds love this stuff. |
Question: | Confusing - does say this is for 12 cakes but gives shipping weight of 14.4 oz which is a little over the wt. of 1 cake. Anyone purchased recently |
Answer: | Yes, there are 12 individual cakes. They are much better than ones I purchased in a hardware store. They are easy to handle |
Question: | is this made in the USA |
Answer: | Made in USA/C&S Products, Fort Dodge, Iowa. Our birds love it and we order it by the 12 pk case. |

User questions & answers
Question: | The description says 6pack, but I am skeptical that it’s less than $10 for 6 bags. Is the price for 1 bag or |
Answer: | I receive a 6-bag carton for I think $29 including shipping--that would be between $4 and $5 per bag, if I'm figuring correctly. |
Question: | Would this work in a Squirrel Buster 1057 mixed with seed or would I need a special feeder |
Answer: | I'm not sure what that feeder looks like, but I purchased this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0061O2O8K/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and it works well. The pellets are about 1/4" dia. or slightly larger. Squirrels don't get in this one. Neither do raccoons. |
Question: | Why arent there any birds at my feeder :-( i had woodpeckers at my old one and there are none at this one. Been up for 3 days |
Answer: | The chickadees, juncos and jays are the birds frequenting my nugget feeder. Can't say I've ever had woodpeckers visit this particular feeder even though they are in the neighborhood. |
Question: | On this item or the ones that sell for $5-6 there is no weight listed. How do I figure out weather spending 5 times is worth it |
Answer: | This is the same bag you'd buy in retail. It will fill one standard metal tube (11" x 2 1/2") with a little bit left over. This product is carried at Meijer seasonally and is often on sale for under $3. Problem is that it's seasonal in the retail setting. Honestly, though, spending $5-6 per bag for 27 oz is way out of line for what you get. I'd seriously look at alternatives that were more cost effective than this deal. |

Question: | What are the ingredients and what % of protein, fat, and fiber do they provide? Thank you |
Answer: | Corn, Roasted Peanuts, Rendered Beef Suet, Oats, Soy Oil Crude Protein: min 10% Crude Fat: min 27% Crude Fiber max 5% This is taken off the cake package but the log has the same ingredients in it. I have used both for years. |
Question: | how many plugs per order |
Answer: | So sorry, it has been too long since I ordered and I don’t remember 😩 ! |
Question: | Do these type of suet cylinders have a hole in the center so the hanger can be removed and the cylinder place on a rod that supports the cylinder |
Answer: | You can leave the rod in the log if you have a one pound feeder or remove it. The wire in some of the logs is very fine and I don't know if it would hold the log on a hook hanger. I would really like to find a feeder that would accommodate the two pound logs. I have adapted a seed feeder with hooks for the two pound log but would really be happy to find a actual feeder. |
Question: | What is the length and diameter of these logs? I have a feeder that includes a holder for suet logs, 3" wide by 8" tall. Will these logs fit |
Answer: | No, they will not fit the 3" wide feeders properly. They are 2" in diameter and half the weight of the 3" cylinders. It is confusing as the listing never mentions the diameter. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do these freeze in winter |
Answer: | Left outside in the winter (depending on how much of a winter you get in your area), these peanut suet nuggets will freeze– to a point... however, I have never had the problem of them freezing together in a large clump & becoming inedible for the birds. My area gets a pretty solid winter, and I continue to put these peanut suet nuggets out, because birds need suet more so in the winter months. I have never had a bad freezing issue. And actually, storing suet in your freezer keeps the suet fresher longer. (I hope was helpful.) |
Question: | Is this a "no melt" suet product |
Answer: | The packaging doesn't specifically state that, but it has a very peanutty, dry texture, and I've had no melting whatsoever throughout two very hot and humid (95+ degrees) summers. It is not at all greasy, unlike suet cakes. |
Question: | Is this product produced in the USA |
Answer: | Fort Dodge, Iowa |
Question: | I don’t understand why this product gets one review of one star and yet the 6-pack gets 200 reviews and is nearly 5 stars. Isn’t it the same product |
Answer: | People might not be reviewing this product...it's cheaper than the bags and the quality is the same. |

Question: | Is this product similar to jim's birdacious bark butter that is sold at wild birds unlimited |
Answer: | The Birdacious Bark Butter is actually thicker and less sticky. |
Question: | What can i mix with peanut butter to keep it from melting in the sun |
Answer: | I don’t know of anything you can do to prevent peanut butter from melting when exposed to the sun. |

Question: | The suet gets knocked out of the holes and my dogs eat more of it from the ground than the birds get from the log. Suggestions |
Answer: | We also have a seed feeder in a squirrel proof cage nearby, so we have so many little birds that they quickly clean up anything that falls. Any they miss the bigger birds grab, including the woodpeckers. If you don't have a seed feeder, you might get good results from that addition. Good luck! |
Question: | The suet gets knocked out of the holes and my dogs eat more of it from the ground than the birds get from the log. Is there a product or method of ho |
Answer: | Put the suet logs in the microwave for 20 seconds, take wax paper to grab suet and then push and shape suet into the inside of the holes .. pushing from each side .. may use more than one log in each hole (I actually use the larger "cakes" and just break them apart and push into the holes) .. the suet then clings to the inside of the holes and won't be easily knocked out. |
Question: | What is the diameter of these logs |
Answer: | mine was about 11 inches |
