3 best wild bird seeds

Wild bird seeds are a popular type of bird food used to attract and feed wild birds in outdoor spaces such as backyards, gardens, or other outdoor areas. Bird enthusiasts often use wild bird seeds to attract a variety of bird species for observation and enjoyment.

Here are some key points about wild bird seeds:

  1. Types of Seeds: Wild bird seeds typically consist of a mixture of various seeds and grains that are appealing to different bird species. Common ingredients include sunflower seeds, millet, cracked corn, nyjer seeds (thistle), safflower seeds, and peanuts.

  2. Attracting Birds: Different bird species are attracted to specific types of seeds. For example, sunflower seeds attract a wide range of birds, including cardinals, finches, and chickadees, while nyjer seeds are preferred by finches like goldfinches.

  3. Nutritional Value: Wild bird seeds provide essential nutrients for birds, including proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. These nutrients are vital for the birds' overall health, energy levels, and maintenance of their plumage.

  4. Feeder Types: Wild bird seeds can be offered in various types of bird feeders, such as tube feeders, hopper feeders, platform feeders, and suet feeders. Different feeders cater to different bird species and their feeding habits.

  5. Seasonal Considerations: The types of bird seeds that are popular and effective may vary by season. For instance, during the colder months, high-fat seeds like sunflower seeds and suet are particularly important for birds to maintain their energy levels and stay warm.

  6. Seed Mixes: Many commercial bird seed mixes are available, offering a combination of seeds to attract a broader range of birds. These mixes are often tailored to suit the preferences of different bird species.

  7. Placement and Maintenance: Proper placement of bird feeders and regular cleaning of feeders are essential to ensure the health and safety of the birds. Placing feeders in a sheltered location can protect them from harsh weather and predators.

  8. Wildlife Observation: Providing wild bird seeds allows bird enthusiasts to observe and identify various bird species, fostering an appreciation for wildlife and nature.

  9. Considerations for Specific Birds: Depending on the region and the types of birds present, you may want to tailor your seed choices to attract specific birds, such as native or migratory species.

In summary, wild bird seeds play a crucial role in backyard birding, providing essential nutrition and attracting a diverse range of bird species for bird enthusiasts to enjoy.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you store this outdoors? During a NY winter especially
Answer: I live in southern New York and I store Wagner's Greatest Variety Blend in a metal garbage can with secure lid outdoors all winter long, and the seed is just fine. I tried the heavy duty plastic/rubber (?) garbage container but the raccoons and other critters eventually managed to chew through it.
Question: Went to purchase again I paid $7.98, why is the price at $17.98 now for 10 pound bag
Answer: I paid $6.84 for this, last week. Its close to $11 this week.
Question: I have the concern regard the pink artificial colour that in the content, is it safe for feeding birds
Answer: I question the necessity of dye in the bird seed too and am not sure of it's safety but we are getting large flocks of all kinds of small birds that are feeding on it heavily. It seems more popular with the birds than another brand that I've put out.
Question: I paid $6.84 for this, last week. It's close to $11 this week. Why
Answer: I have been buying this bird seed for several months now getting a shipment every 2-3 weeks and always have paid around $11. I did notice about a week or two ago the price was almost $17 and I refused to buy it then. Waited to the price dropped again before purchasing.
