Answer:	The black cap pulls off. You then fill the feeder with sunflower seeds. The container should be skinny and flexible; for example, a plastic cup you can squeeze as the opening to fill is not too big. I used a regular cup first time and lost a lot of seeds while filling. Also, FYI just the top part of the snowman (face) lights up from solar. The middle and bottom do not.

Until Perky-Pet redesigns this feeder by addressing these three problems, I'd suggest you purchase the newer hummingbird feeders with plastic bottoms. Inside the base is a foam float that will rise up as the nectar fills. Once the base is full, the float closes off the hole, preventing the nectar from overfilling the base and pouring out.
