Mounting your house

Since bluebird houses can be mounted in a couple different ways which require different hardware, no mounting hardware is included with this house so that customers can better customize their installation.

Bluebird houses can be mounted on a metal pipe/pole using pipe clamps (our preferred method), which you should be able to find at your local hardware, plumbing, or fencing store. The pipe clamps should be attached above and below the nesting chamber of the house.

The bluebird house can be mounted directly to a 4x4 post, wooden fence post, or tree by screwing through the back board above and below the nest chamber of the bluebird house with screws at least 1/2" longer than the depth of the board, or by screwing through the bottom of the house into the top of a 4x4 post. Be aware that these mounting methods do allow predators easy access to disturb the nest box.

In any mounting method, the bottom of the house should be 4-6 feet above the ground with the entrance facing south/southeast in a clearing with tall grasses or shrubbery 8-12 feet away.

Answer:	I agree the roof is too dark. I live in Western NY and no birds have moved in. I am going to paint the roof a lighter color. I do love the house though.

Answer:	Sorry no. I've hung mine on a tree branch snugging the bottom in a fork of lower branches so it doesn't swing. Love this wren house. Bought last year thinking it was too late in the season for nesting. Mom and pop moved in the same afternoon! Noisy little buggers, but fun. Love it.

Answer:	A: I bought this and within 24 hours I had a wren building a nest in it. I hung it on a shepherds hook about 5ft from my Bradford pear tree. I hung it about 5ft. off the ground. Would definitely buy again.

Hanging Your Wren House

Wrens and chickadees both prefer houses that are located in a sheltered area - under the shade and protection of tree branches is ideal. When possible, hang the house so that the entry hole faces away from incoming weather anywhere from 5-10 feet off the ground. A hanging style house is preferred so that it can be placed outward on a branch to help prevent predators reaching the nest. A male wren will build a nest out of sticks and perch on the branches above the house to attract a female. A pair of chickadees will work together to build their nest with moss, pet hair, or other types of fur-like material.

Clean-Out Doors

Maintaining a clean house is important to prevent disease and promote bird health. Houses should be cleaned out at least once a year while not in use.

Answer:	The roof is galvanized steel. The galvanizing process increases the weatherability of the steel and will significantly delay any rusting.
Question:	How to hang this wren bird house
Answer:	Placement for wren houses is ideally 5’-10’ above the ground and can be under an eave, hanging from a living or dead tree or on a pole with space in front of the opening. Higher or lower placement can also work as long as there is good cover nearby.
Question:	How do you mount the box to a pole
Answer:	i used small (3/4") screws (and pre-drilled holes so the wood doesn't split) and mounted to a metal t-post with pipe support strapping. also need to install a baffle to the post to keep out predators. can't post pics here, i'm sorry.
Question:	why does the one I got, NOT have the kerfs on the inside ? the product photos feature kerfs in the wood to allow baby birds to climb out
Answer:	I am not sure why the bird house you ordered does not have the Kerfs. The one I ordered has the kerfs, but they were not very deep. I used an Exacto knife to make the kerfs a little deeper. You could also tack some wire mesh to the wood for the birds' feet to grab onto. I also drilled a hole and glued a dowel on the outside for the birds to land on. Then I made the air holes on the 4 corners of the floor a little bigger for better ventilation. Overall this is a nice birdhouse, but it could use a little design imptovement.

Answer:	Absolutely. They're determined. It took birds about 8 months to find the feeder and less than a month after that, the squirrel invasion. I almost did a spit take the first morning I found a squirrel folded up and chowing down in the feeder. Hazard of loving birds. I posted a video for your enjoyment. I don't hate squirrels, I just thought they would knock down the feeder with their weight, which hasn't happened yet.

Answer:	You will have to buy hardware to hang it it the way you prefer. Some people hang it directly on a building or on a tree, in which case you can attach by drilling through the back board and mounting it. Answer:	the ones on my item were not metal, plastic or vinyl

Answer:	up to one hundred bats, but i have counted 75 bats coming out with lots of little babies still inside with other adults

Attracting Bats

Existing evidence strongly suggests that using bat attractants or lures will not increase house occupancy rates. Extensive studies show that the number one bat attractant is a well-designed and quality-constructed bat house. Occupancy rate is highest in tall, multi-chamber house designs.

Installing your house

All bat houses should be mounted a minimum of 10 feet above ground, with 12-20 feet height being better. Houses should be installed facing East or South in a location that receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight (morning sun is preferable for locations where only partial sun is available). Be sure to place the house 20-30 feet from the nearest trees when possible to help protect the bats from predators. Locations close to a water source - preferably 1/4 mile or less - are often more successful. It is also important to install your bat house away from man-made light sources such as streetlights.

How quickly bats take up residence in a new house can depend on the location and time of year the house is erected. It is suggested to wait two full years before relocating or modifying an unoccupied house.

Question:	A bizarre question about your otherwise great feeder: numerous cockroaches feed in it at night; some end up getting into my house. Got a solution
Answer:	I wish I did but fortunately, we have not had that problem. Could it be how high the window is or the window you chose that gives them easy access?
Question:	Will the suction cups stay on winter during cold winter, rainy days
Answer:	This is my third window feeder. I have 2 house type feeders and this type both with suction cups. The house type feeder stayed on through the winter. I’ve only had this one for a few months but I’m assuming it will stay attached through the winter as well. I learned the trick to keeping suction cups working well is to moisten with olive oil before sticking them to your window. After applying the olive oil, DRY WELL or the suction cup will slide, however once in place it won’t move you have to pry them off!!!
Question:	I need to replace the suction cups (two no longer suction properly). Where can I get the right size
Answer:	They are quite standard. I haven’t replaced any on this one but have on several other window feeders. A 2 inch size should work.
Question:	How much bird seed does it hold Thanks
Answer:	About 1 1/2 cups. I use a birdseed that is a mix of small kernels (millet) and larger seeds (sunflower). If you use all sunflower seeds it would probably hold 1 cup.
