Answer:	I have never had to puncture one - they have always had an opening, a very small opening. The syrup will not really come outo unless the hummingbird is feeding.

Answer:	I noticed the same thing when I first bought mine. There is actually a little slit already in the red plastic feeder part. I just used a small kitchen knife to get it started. But be careful not to poke it too much or the fluid will all run out.

I'm sure you've resolved your problem by now but in case anyone else wonders.
