1 Introduction
This book makes hydroponics accessible to gardeners of any experience level. You'll learn both the science of hydroponics and its practical applications and see that DIY hydroponics is not just a way to avoid purchasing expensive hydroponic systems; it's also a way to create a beautiful garden better suited to your needs. Offering build guides for hydroponic gardens that range from simple to complex, this book shows systems suitable for nearly any environment or application. The build guides include many options for customizing the design so you can create a garden catered to your space, crop selection, and budget.
2 Equipment
The equipment you'll need for a hydroponic growing system depends, of course, on what kind of system you want to create. Except for the most basic systems, hydroponics usually includes a pump to recirculate the mixture of water and fertilizer. The recirculating water is important because it is through movement, and in some cases an airstone with tubing, that oxygen from the ambient air is supplied to the liquid and then to the plants. These pumps, along with the tubing and joining connectors, are the heart of the system and probably the most important equipment you will buy.
3 Hydroponic Growing Systems
DIY Hydroponic systems are a great way to create a custom garden catered to your location, crop, and desired aesthetics. Many beginning hydroponic growers decide to build their own systems because of the cost of retail systems, but from personal experience, I have found building DIY systems may not always be the cheapest option, especially if there are mistakes in the system design. I love creating original systems built for specific locations, but creating original systems can often involve a lot of expensive mistakes. I've purchased items that don't fit, or wouldn't hold after I glued them into place, or broke, or didn't provide enough light, or didn't provide enough drainage . . .
4 Starting Seeds And Cuttings
Growing a healthy, robust seedling or root cutting is often one of the biggest challenges for new hydroponic gardeners. The ideal conditions for germination or root establishment are dependent on crop selection. Refer to the crop selection charts in the appendix to find recommended germination temperatures for various crops.
5 Plant Nutrition
Plants cannot tell the difference between natural and synthetic fertilizers. Plants have specialized pathways that only allow them to uptake a very short list of ions and simple molecules. In traditional soil-based gardening, these ions and molecules are often derived from manure or decaying plant matter broken down by a series of biological processes.
6 System Maintenance
At some point, even the most basic hydroponic gardens will require some upkeep. Hydroponic system maintenance includes everything from monitoring and adjusting nutrient concentrations to regularly flushing the system, and even the occasional scrubbing of pots and reservoirs.
7 Common Problems And Troubleshooting
Now that you have learned to be a system builder, an indoor gardener, and a maintenance worker, it is time to learn to be a doctor. Here is a brief primer on how to diagnose and troubleshoot your hydroponic growing system.
Growing System: Bottle Hydroponics
A quick google search of “bottle hydroponics” will reveal the many ways to use bottles in hydroponics. Unfortunately, most of these are either complicated, ugly, or both. These simple hydroponic bottles are easy to build, low cost, low maintenance, require no electricity, and look great.
Kratky Method and Aeration
The Kratky method is the easiest hydroponic growing technique. No pumps, no complex irrigation systems . . . just plants sitting in water. Most of the early hydroponic research focused on static water systems like the Kratky method. These systems worked, but, as scientists tend to do, they kept experimenting and eventually found there was an increase in plant growth rate when the nutrient solution was aerated. This discovery spurred the development of circulating hydroponic systems with increased aeration, like nutrient film technique (NFT) and top drip irrigation.

User questions & answers
Question: | Any one use this for there reptiles/snakes |
Answer: | I've generally seen coconut husk used for ground snakes. Tree snakes get coconut fiber |
Question: | Why does this take 1-2 months to ship |
Answer: | There are limited supply quantities available nationwide from the main distributor and that could be one of the main reasons. Also due to state restrictions we are not able to ship this product to Oregon at this moment. |
Question: | If I use blower to clean the leaves, will these chips still stay in the same place under the power of blower? Thanks. Rose |
Answer: | I doubt it. They are very light even when wet. I've used them as a potting medium for cymbidium orchids and they support the plants well without adding a lot of weight but I would not use them as a ground cover or mulch. |
Question: | would this product be usable in an aquaponic setting |
Answer: | Yes you can use this for aquaponics but you may want to look into clay pebbles as well. |

Product description
The Hydrofarm Super Coarse Perlite is a unique volcanic mineral which expands from four to twenty times its original volume when it is heated. Perlite can reach temperatures of approximately 1600-1700 degrees F. The media's expansion is due to the presence of two to six percent combined water in the crude perlite rock, which causes the perlite to pop in a manner similar to that of popcorn. When expanded, each granular, snow-white particle of Super Coarse Perlite is sterile with a neutral pH and contains many tiny, closed cells or bubbles. The surface of each particle is covered with tiny cavities which provide an extremely large surface area. These surfaces hold moisture and nutrients and make them available to plant roots. In addition, because of the physical shape of each particle, air passages are formed, providing optimum aeration and drainage. Because perlite is sterile, it is free of disease, seeds, and insects.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this work for making hypertufa containers |
Answer: | You should not have a problem using HSCP for your purpose. Some customers received great results in using it with a combination of other ingredients to make rock gardens. Combined with Portland cement, peat moss, and water, the combination make great light-weight planters. |
Question: | Is this organic? I noticed some perlite brands are listed as organic, not sure exactly what that means |
Answer: | Organic is plants or animal products that are raised without the use of man made fertilizer, feeds or sprays to kill bugs. I am not sure if this product is organic or not. I use it in my orchid mix, but not on my vegetables I grow them organically. |
Question: | how big are the chunks jumbo or |
Answer: | 1/4" is about the largest in our bag, and most were slightly smaller. Still works perfectly in our hydroponic buckets (with strainer nets), and the 100L bag is HUGE, but the pieces are much smaller than we expected from "super coarse". |
Question: | how big are the perlite pieces |
Answer: | They are bigger than most perlite. We tried to order it locally at any of the gardening centers here and could only find small. My husband was very particular and wanted the space in his soil. The pieces are a little bigger than popping corn. |

Jump start heating cable - place in ground to heat soil for seed germination - forty eight feet long - bright orange for visibility.
- Place in ground to speed germination and seedling growth with gentle heat
- Perfect indoors or out, this cable is 48 feet long, safely encased in a tough, waterproof PVC coating with orange color for visibility
- Cover the cable with 3 to 4 inches of soil, then plant your seeds, seedlings, or plants above this height
- It is designed to last for many seasons, offering an economical and effective solution to the problem of cold weather slowing down your garden
User questions & answers
Question: | How warm will this soil heating get |
Answer: | I won't be using this cable for a few weeks. I can't give you a definitive answer except to say that they are designed to heat the soil from 70-76 degrees. |
Question: | Can this be used in the winter to keep a small area above freezing? I am hoping to keep banana tree roots from freezing in winter |
Answer: | Yes, the heater is designed to do exactly that. There may be limits to that -- extremely low temps may overwhelm the device -- but I don't live in such a cold climate. My use is generally restrict to cold nights during the fall and winter growing seasons and it accomplished that easily. Good product IMHO. |
Question: | I am planning on using this on my concrete patio deck and putting my plastic Bonsai pots above the cable. How hot does the cable get |
Answer: | The built-in thermostat designed to maintain 77°F-85°F, but the cable needs to be buried in a sandy substrate with a plastic cloth on top to protect tools from damaging the cable when working in the garden. Please review the user manual (link provided below) for installation instructions and illustrations. https://s3.amazonaws.com/hydrofarmpubdocs/JSHC_Instrux_7.1.14_22966.pdf |
Question: | In the reviews people say there is a thermostat. Does the cable turn itself on at a certain temp? If so what is the temperature and is it adjustable |
Answer: | There is a tiny thermostat built into a bump on the sub-soil wire. It is not adjustable. I found it capped the soil temperature in my raised bed at about 70F. I'm very satisfied with this heating cable. Just make sure you follow the instructions about laying the cable out in a close zig-zag pattern, a certain distance apart and not crossing any wires. If used outside in cold and very cold temperatures, the soil temp can drop below 55--due to much greater heat loss, not the thermostat. In cold situations, it is much more effective with 1" styrofoam insulation laid flat about 4" below the surface and a tight fitting plastic or glass cover to put over your raised bed or coldframe on cold nights. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will the pebbles stop floating |
Answer: | Mostly, yes. They should become saturated after about 24 hours. But some may always float no matter what. Don't know the application, but you can either add more of them or lower the water level. As long as the bottom pebbles are wet, the water will sick upward through capillary action. |
Question: | How much do 4 L weight |
Answer: | In a dry state-maybe 1-2 pounds! |
Question: | Can these be put in home made heating pads and get heated in the microwave? Thanks |
Answer: | Oh yes, you can heat them in the microwave. And even boil them in the water. |
Question: | liters, how many 4 inch pots will that fill |
Answer: | I don't exactly remember, but figure 8 liters = a bit more than 2 gallons, I would say 3, 4 inch pots |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it has smal peices of sand and plastic like othe cheap brands |
Answer: | I have been using this brand for a couple years and I have not found any foreign objects in it. I usually mix about 1/3 of the hydrated coir with 2/3 potting soil. I find most potting soil mixes, like Miracle Grow, too strong for most house plants. My observation is it definitely helps prevent potted plants from becoming root bound. |
