12 best tree fertilizers

Tree fertilizers are products specifically designed to provide essential nutrients to trees, promoting their growth, health, and overall vigor. These fertilizers are a crucial component of tree care, especially in situations where the natural soil conditions may lack certain nutrients. Here's what you should know about tree fertilizers:

  1. Nutrient Requirements: Trees require several essential nutrients for healthy growth. These include nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), as well as secondary and micronutrients like calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, and manganese. Tree fertilizers are formulated to provide these nutrients in appropriate proportions.

  2. Types of Tree Fertilizers:

    • Granular Fertilizers: These are solid, slow-release fertilizers that are typically applied to the soil surface. They gradually release nutrients over time, providing a consistent supply to the tree's roots.
    • Liquid Fertilizers: These are dissolved in water and can be applied directly to the soil or sprayed onto the foliage (foliar feeding). Liquid fertilizers are absorbed more quickly by the tree but may require more frequent application.
    • Spikes or Stakes: Fertilizer spikes or stakes are designed to be inserted into the ground near the tree's root zone. They slowly release nutrients into the soil.
    • Organic Fertilizers: Organic tree fertilizers are derived from natural sources, such as compost, bone meal, or kelp. They are environmentally friendly and provide a slow-release source of nutrients.
  3. Timing: Fertilizing trees should be done at specific times of the year. Spring and fall are typically the best times for application, as these coincide with periods of active growth. Avoid fertilizing during hot summer months, as it can stress the tree.

  4. Application Method: When applying tree fertilizer, it's essential to spread it evenly around the tree's drip line (the area under the outermost branches). This is where the majority of the tree's feeder roots are located. Water the area thoroughly after applying to help nutrients penetrate the soil.

  5. Proper Dosage: Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the recommended dosage of fertilizer. Over-fertilization can harm the tree, so it's essential not to exceed the recommended rates.

  6. Soil Testing: Conducting a soil test can help determine the specific nutrient deficiencies in your soil. This information can guide you in selecting the right type and formulation of fertilizer.

  7. Young vs. Mature Trees: Young trees often benefit from fertilization to encourage rapid growth. Mature trees may require less frequent fertilization but can benefit from occasional nutrient supplementation to maintain health.

  8. Environmental Considerations: Be mindful of environmental factors when using tree fertilizers. Avoid excessive runoff into water bodies, as nutrient runoff can contribute to water pollution.

  9. Safety: Handle fertilizers with care and follow safety precautions. Keep them out of reach of children and pets.

  10. Professional Assistance: For large or valuable trees, or if you're uncertain about the best approach, consider consulting an arborist or tree care professional. They can assess your tree's specific needs and provide expert guidance.

In summary, tree fertilizers play a crucial role in maintaining the health and vitality of trees by supplying essential nutrients.Proper application and timing are key to ensuring that trees receive the right nutrients at the right time to thrive in their environment.

User questions & answers

Question: Just a couple questions... how do i place these spikes around the trees and shrubs, how far away? one spike each? what type of fertilizer is it? safe
Answer: The pictures and instructions depict placing them at the drip line of the tree, so about where the bulk of the branches extend. It a circular pattern so like 6 for a bigger tree. In my case about 6 ft away from the trunk, I put 2 on each side of my smaller trees 45 degrees apart due to sidewalk and street restraint etc...
Question: Que tan retirado del arbol se deve poner el abono
Answer: Las espigas deben plantarse alrededor de la línea de goteo del árbol, a no menos de 2 pies del tronco del árbol.
Question: Is this a 10-10-10 fertilizer
Answer: It is 15-5-10.
Question: what is the fertilizer (N, P, K) composition of these, e.g
Answer: (No, it’s not 10-15-15, as another answer says). It is 15-5-10. I have a recent package right in front of me, so I’m relaying this directly from the “source.”

Use Once A Season, Spring & Fall

Trees, shrubs and ornamentals can make low-maintenance and long-lasting additions to your landscape. Providing color, structure, shade and even fruit to your garden, one of their biggest requirements is an occasional feeding, particularly for younger trees and shrubs. They use a lot of energy in the spring, pushing out flowers, leaves and seeds, so they benefit most from plant food during this active period. Feeding your flowering shrubs after they’ve bloomed will encourage more blooms next year.

Miracle-Gro has tree spikes specially formulated for trees, shrubs, evergreens, fruit, citrus, and palm trees. They should be used annually, in the spring and early fall, for a continuous release of nutrients.

Tree & Shrub

Promotes lush, beautiful foilage in trees, shrubs and evergreens.

Fruit & Citrus

Promotes enhanced fruit production versus unfed trees.

Prep Spike

Place enclosed plastic cap on top of spike. If the ground is dry, wet before driving spikes.

Identify Your Tree Drip Line

The drip line is the outermost circumference of the tree branches. For small trees and shrubs with drip line closer than 2 feet, insert spikes 2 feet away from center. Spikes should be at least 3 feet apart.

Drive Spike into Ground

Drive spike into the ground around the tree or shrub following the drip line. Be sure to remove cap and save for future use. Then continue to drive spike at least 2 inches below the surface.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used for pomegranate plants
Answer: Pomegranate plants or trees can use this fertilizer, since their needs are similar, but I read that a 8-8-8 formula would be better formulation. This fertilizer ,Miracle Grow Shake'n'feed for citrus is 13-7-13.
Question: Has anyone used this product on avocado trees
Answer: I am a science teacher and have grown many Avocados from a pit, and have only used this product. Many of my trees are 1-4 years old and doing better than expected.
Question: What is the NPK ratio for this fertilizer
Answer: These answers show exactly why the product's back label (or wherever the ratio is shown) should be in the product description. We should not have to rely on someone checking a container which may not even be the same product!
Question: What is the n-p-k ratio of this product? why are we having to ask this, this is basic
Answer: A 12-4-8 NPK ratio is not a good formula for tomato fruit production. It's OK to give it this when the plant is small, but you will not get a good tomato crop if you continue with this ratio. Fruit production requires more phosphorus than this fertilizer can provide. I always have excellent fruit production with 10-10-10.

Tree Fertilizer, Tree Secret 64oz, Save Your Dying Tree, All Natural, Bioavailable, Loaded with Nutrients, Works On All Trees !

Dr. JimZ

Based on 229 reviews Check latest price

Product description

WHY BUY TREE SECRET Forty years of experimentation lead to the product we now call Tree Secret; this one of a kind product is a fermented blend of over 60 natural ingrediants that create a special nutrient cluster which allow the tree to more easily absorb the vital nutrients needed to be healthy, strong, and disease free.....applying Tree Secret is very similar to the process we see in nature when a tree feeds on the nutrients from composted leaves found on the forest floor. When you apply Tree Secret you are doing much more than growing a tree; you are feeding it all the nutrition that the tree needs to be healthy from the roots on up. Tests by microbiologists at Boise State University showed that 24 hours after an application of Dr. JimZ, there was an increase of 70 percent in beneficial bacteria in the soil. After a week, there was a 400 percent increase. This organic matter in the soil sets the stage for solid trees with beautiful color that yield increased amounts of delicious fruit. Traditional fertilizers are aimed at quick growth. “You can force-feed a plant by applying high doses of water-soluble fertilizer, and get a 10-foot tall rose bush. But the quality of the roses may not be what you want. Plants like roses may become more susceptible to aphids, because rapid growth means thin cell walls, and it is easier for the aphids to attack. Today's organic gardeners understand this.” - Jos Zamzow The solution to week trees and over-fertilized bushes is to feed them with the proper nutrient clusters they need to heal themselves and strengthen their immune system (yes, trees and bushes have immune systems too). So, if your trees and bushes look like they could use a little help, or if you just want to make your beautiful yard even more stunning.... there is nothing better than Tree Secret. This is mother natures premium cocktail for extraordinary results!

  • SAVE YOUR DYING TREE AND CREATE A LUSH PARIDISE AROUND THE YARD!
  • Tree Secret liquid tree fertilizer formerly known as Save-A-Tree is the only natural tree fertilizer that has been created specifically for optimum tree health. Our small batch, extra potent blend of readily available nutrients is exactly what your trees, plants, and bushes need to regain their health and stay bug free. The competition doesn't come close!
  • Nitrogen found in most chemical lawn fertilizer is largely responsible for the unnatural rapid growth that weakens trees by thinning their protective cell walls; this opens the door for disease, wind damage, and bug infestations.....
  • Plants and bushes need the same nutrition as slow growing trees. Give your yard a serving of this ultra potent, undiluted, all natural tree fertilizer and watch in amazement as your trees thrive and your landscape transforms into a lush paradise.
  • Strengthen your trees, less bugs, less disease. This stuff works.

Answer: Yes they are screw on. I have them and they are great inexpensive atomizers that never get clogged or break easily.
Question: Can this be used on palm trees

User questions & answers

Question: Would these work well for Blueberry bushes
Answer: Funny how everybody says that Blueberry bushes love acidic soil, and to look for evergreen fertilizer . Then tells your that these acidic evergreen fertilizer spikes won't work.
Question: What is the ideal depth to plant the spikes
Answer: not necessary to go very deep, but that is only an uneducated opinion...I use a root auger and go down about 12", and place the fertilizer spike in, and then cover it over with soil; it seems to help, especially my shrubs
Question: I have trees 1-2 inch trunck diameter. I did not see 30' requirement. I placed 2 spikes for each tree , 6 inch from trunck. Will this burn my trees
Answer: Well first off it's 30" not 30', but it may very well burn them putting them that close. If you just did this I would dig out the spikes and either place new ones at 30" or try to reuse the old ones. These are a great product and I have used them for many years. Stay with it but please watch the placement.
Question: Can i use it for fruit tree
Answer: The Jobe's 1611 Evergreen out door spikes are just used for evergreen's in the fall. There is a Jobe's fertilizer spike just for fruit or regular trees.

User questions & answers

Question: is this Spike for Dogwood Trees
Answer: I do not know about dogwood trees. I have used this spike on my Hickory tree, Ash tree, Maple tree and Spruce tree. They have all done well. Grew larger with many leaves. I am not a 'gardener' but person who uses fertilizer on my lawn, shrubs, flowers and trees. Dogwood is a deciduous tree and I would think that these spikes would not harm it -- as I have used it with my deciduous trees.
Question: We have a 25 year old (40ft) maple tree in tx that doesnt look healthy. Will this product work? How should we use it? Thank you
Answer: Your maple needs iron like someone else posted. So no, this product is not enough because you need the IRON! Try this product from Jobes: Ross® Green Again Iron Formula Root Feeder Refills Make sure your trees are healthy and green all season long with Ross® Root Feeder Refills Green Again® with Iron. Chlorosis, a yellowing of the leaves with green veins, is caused by a lack of iron in your plant’s diet. These refills are a special formula of fertilizer plus iron for plants suffering from yellow-leaf iron deficiency. Apply when first symptoms appear or to prevent deficiency if chlorosis has been a problem previously. Ross® pre-measured refills make for fast, easy and mess-free fertilizing.
Question: I have a small Japanese Maple and 10 young tea olives that I want to use the spikes to fertilize. How many per tree would be enough trough spring and
Answer: It depends on the diameter (i.e., trunk width at 1 ft from grade) of the trees. If 1-2 inches, then plan on 2 spikes per tree. Above 2 inches, its basically 1 spike per inch diameter.
Question: What is nutrient composition? Nitrogen, potassium, etc

The Jobe’s Biozome advantage for organic gardening: improves the long-term soil quality of your garden, increases root mass, promotes plant growth and helps your garden resist disease, insects, drought and other unfavorable conditions within a growing season. Delivers long-term benefits without chemicals. Jobe’s Biozome is a unique and proprietary blend of beneficial microorganisms Archaea, Mycorrhizal fungi and healthy bacteria. Archaea, a recently identified microorganism found in some of the planet’s most extreme environments, such as hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor. In garden applications, scientists have discovered that these microbes actually clean the soil, returning it to a healthier, more natural state. Jobe’s Biozome contains a proprietary species of Archaea that quickly breaks down complex hydrocarbons and minerals into basic nutrients and trace elements that plants readily absorb. Mycorrhizal fungi expands the surface-absorbing area of the roots by 100 to 1,000 times, sending out filaments that act as extensions of the plant’s root system, helping plants absorb more water and nutrients. In return, the fungi receive essential sugars and other compounds from the plant roots, fueling their own growth. Finally, the healthy bacterial strain in Biozome improves the soil structure and quality, keeping nutrients near the roots. Jobe’s Organics Fruit & Citrus granular fertilizer is OMRI listed and may be used in certified organic food production according to the USDA National Organic Program. User questions & answers

Question: The seller of our meyer lemon tree recommends npk 3-1-1 fertilizer. i do not see this on amazon. what would you recommend? thank you
Answer: Jobe’s Organics Fruit & Citrus Fertilizer with Biozome, 3-5-5 Organic Fast Acting Granular Fertilizer for All Fruit and Citrus Trees, 4…by Jobe's Organics$ 7 99 $13.23
Question: Can this be used for potted citrus tree
Answer: I have used spikes in potted trees but I'm not so sure they don't burn the plants, personally I wouldn't do it again at least not those large spikes, I think you are safer with a time released granular product. Spikes are wonderful for in ground trees where you can place them at the edge of the drip line, but in my opinion they are too close to the trunk in a potted container and will burn the plant.
Question: meyer lemon
Answer: I use this for my apple trees and yes I get bigger and better apples. This formula (9-12-12) is for fruit and citrus. Lower nitrogen for less greenery and higher phosphorous and potassium for improved fruit production. If you want to grow lemons on your "meyer lemon" then this is what you want.
Question: How many spikes do I need for 13 recently planted trees with 1" to 2" trunks
Answer: I would buy 2 packages, or 30 spikes. You will want to use 2 spikes per tree, 1 on each side about 30" from the trunk. We have a rectangular orchard with about 20 trees on 10 foot centers that we put in last year. We used a total of 40 spikes on the east and west sides of each tree. I would also recommend that you purchase a handheld auger (Yard Butler 30 inch Roto Digger) to drill into the ground about 18 inches before dropping in the spike. You want your roots to go down for their nutrients rather than across the surface, and burying the fertilizer stakes helps make that happen. These say right on the package do not use within 30 inches of tree trunk". Take that seriously. Buried or not, they will burn your roots if you stick them right next to the trunk.

Answer: I haven`t used it as a plant mister ...but it does spray water out as a fine mist
Question: How much of the Advanced is used compared to the Original formula? of Bayer Tree & Shrub insect control
Answer: Comes in boxed
Question: I have two very tall ash trees, Would I use one gallon per tree or for both trees. Would I apply once a year or twice a year. Would I apply for one year or two years
Answer: It definitely helps with stopping your makeup from transferring onto your collar. This pink bottle has a bit of fragrance, but not too much. The lavender bottle is labeled as sensitive, and has even less fragrance. I have very sensitive skin - and I can wear both formulas. I cannot live without this product. I get raccoon eyes no matter what mascara I use - this is the ONLY makeup setting spray on the market that works for me. I have tried them all. Give it a try. The only down side to this product is the pump on the bottle - I wish it put out a finer spray.

User questions & answers

Question: Could this be used in containers for boxwoods
Answer: I am using it for arbs, but I don't see why it would not work for boxwoods if they are evergreens. Since it is in tiny pellet form, it would be easy to spread it out near the edges of the container and water it in....
Question: Is this safe for potted tulips
Answer: i have never used it on tulips in the earth or in a pot. I use it on bulbs in pots such as hyacinth and crocus and blue bells with success.
Question: Can you use this as you’re planting new bulbs in the fall
Answer: I'm not sure about bulbs you plant in the fall (tulips, daffodils), but I did use it on iris rhizomes that I'd planted in the late summer of 2016 and every one of the iris I planted bloomed in the spring of 2017 so apparently they "liked" the product. As such, I would assume that it would be safe to use this product on new bulbs that are being put in now.
Question: What are the ingredients? I'm comparing against Dr Earth bulb food, which uses fish meal, making it smelly
Answer: I don't 'have the bag in front of me, but there is no bone meal (my personal "won't use") and seems to be be like coarse cat litter with very limited smell. Any smell would be considered perhaps chemical in nature, not fish. I've used this stuff for years and have been very happy

User questions & answers

Question: Does it work on peach trees
Answer: I have no idea what the warranty is. but I have seen some spray bottles lat 6 months and others last two or more years. My advice would be to buy a few bottles so if a bottle fails you always a have a couple of spare bottles. The reason I say this is that companies are always changing their product lines & you may not be able to replace the spray bottle you have.
Question: Is the jobe's fruit bulk fertilizer spikes, 160 spikes organic
Answer: single bottle, and no you can't purchase the same bottle as this at Walmart or home depot not high output spray. I know I've tried many bottles before finding this one (probably close to 20) before using this one. I use it at work in a factory. high output spray means a full spray to spray and a half vs 7-8 sprays on a regular spray bottle
Question: Is jobe's fruit bulk fertilizer spikes, 160 spikes organic
Answer: It’s an empty bottle. Unless you put in something that isn’t safe to consume I would think it’s components in the sprayer and/or glass materials are safe?
Question: A review said you only get 5 spikes, is this true or do you get 160 as advertised? Thank you for your time
Answer: It's not printed on the glass, its a sticker that peels off.
