14 best garden at home lawn fertilizers

Home lawn fertilizers are essential products used in gardening and lawn care to promote healthy and lush grass growth. They provide essential nutrients that may be lacking in the soil. Here's what you should know about garden at-home lawn fertilizers in relation to fertilizers, plant food, soils, fertilizers mulches, gardening, lawn care, and patio lawn garden:

  1. Types of Lawn Fertilizers:

    • There are different types of lawn fertilizers, including granular and liquid formulations.
    • Granular fertilizers are solid pellets or granules that are spread evenly over the lawn.
    • Liquid fertilizers are mixed with water and applied using a sprayer.
  2. Nutrient Content:

    • Lawn fertilizers typically contain essential nutrients for plant growth, including nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K).
    • Nitrogen promotes lush green growth, phosphorus supports root development, and potassium aids in overall plant health and disease resistance.
    • The nutrient content is usually indicated by the N-P-K ratio on the product label (e.g., 10-5-5).
  3. Slow-Release vs. Quick-Release:

    • Fertilizers can be categorized as slow-release or quick-release.
    • Slow-release fertilizers gradually release nutrients over an extended period, providing a longer-lasting effect.
    • Quick-release fertilizers provide a rapid nutrient boost but may require more frequent applications.
  4. Application Timing:

    • Lawn fertilizers should be applied at the right time to be most effective.
    • Spring and fall are common times for fertilization, with different formulations suitable for each season.
    • Follow product instructions for specific timing recommendations.
  5. Application Methods:

    • Proper application methods are crucial to ensure even coverage and avoid over-fertilizing or burning the grass.
    • Granular fertilizers can be spread using a broadcast spreader.
    • Liquid fertilizers require dilution and application with a hose-end or backpack sprayer.
  6. Soil Testing:

    • Conducting a soil test before fertilizing can help determine the nutrient needs of your lawn.
    • Soil tests provide information on pH levels and nutrient deficiencies, allowing you to select the right fertilizer for your soil.
  7. Environmental Considerations:

    • When using lawn fertilizers, it's essential to follow guidelines and avoid overuse to prevent nutrient runoff into waterways.
    • Choose phosphorus-free fertilizers if your soil already has adequate phosphorus levels.
  8. Organic vs. Synthetic:

    • Lawn fertilizers are available in both organic and synthetic formulations.
    • Organic fertilizers are derived from natural sources and provide slow-release nutrients.
    • Synthetic fertilizers are chemically formulated and offer precise nutrient content control.
  9. Safety Precautions:

    • Follow safety instructions on product labels, such as wearing protective gear when handling fertilizers.
    • Store fertilizers out of reach of children and pets.
  10. Lawn Care Routine:

    • Fertilization is just one aspect of a comprehensive lawn care routine.
    • Regular mowing, watering, and weed control are also essential for maintaining a healthy lawn.

In summary, home lawn fertilizers play a vital role in promoting the health and vibrancy of your lawn. Understanding the types, nutrient content, application methods, and environmental considerations will help you make informed choices and achieve a lush and thriving lawn. Always follow product instructions and consider conducting a soil test for the best results.

User questions & answers

Question: So anderson's innova 7-1-2 (soy meal) contains amino acids but andersons super juice 7-1-2 does not
Answer: Yes, Innova which is SOY based, granular, organic fertilizer has amino acids. Completely different product from the spray Super Juice.
Question: Cancel other service
Answer: Yes
Question: Could you spray this through a backpack sprayer
Answer: You could but we would not recommend.. here is why. 1) There is a good chance you’ll have clogs. They have TINY holes. 2) You’ll be putting down the mix in a very concentrated spray ratio of water / Super Juice. It’s better to use MORE water which will not only cover the blades of grass but also send some to the roots. Example: Many professional lawn chemicals such as pre-emergents give you recommended gallons of water per 1000 sq ft to use when applying. This not only prevents plant damage but helps deliver the chemicals to the correct areas.
Question: Full strength is .0437lb of n per 1k at a 14-2-4;half rate of 7-1-2 is .0219 lb of n per 1k. i need to apply near 1/8 lb of n per 1k is that
Answer: I have a 4500 sqft yard, the product states that it covers 42000 sqft. 42000/4500 means I can apply this to my yard just over 9 times. 9 applications * .14 lbs of nitrogen = 1.3 pounds of nitrogen for my entire yard for 80 dollars... definitely more expensive than, but i guess you're paying for the micros

How much water to use?

It does not matter if you use one gallon of water to apply or three gallons of water to apply.  You will still be applying the same amount of (dry mix) nutrients to the lawn.  The only difference is that you can take your TIME spraying it on and not be running around like a mad man out of breath at the end.

How much dry mix to use?

Most people will apply at a 14-2-4 ratio in the spring and fall, then switch over to the 7-1-2 during the summer months.  If you want to apply at a 14-2-4 ratio, use 1/4 of a bag.  You can also convert to CUPS if you want. 1 CUP of DRY mix will treat approx. 1500 sq ft at a 14-2-4 rate. If mixing at 7-1-2 ratio then one cup will treat roughly 3000 sq ft.

User questions & answers

Question: how far can it spray
Answer: Hydrophobic fluids need a stabilizer, you can’t have pure hydrophobic extract... look at any of the other providers that use hydrophobic extract of neem oil and it will be a 70%/30% mix! If you want 100% neem oil, the product won’t be an extract and the instructions will tell you that you have to add dish soap + only to mix up what can be used immediately
Question: Where is it made? China
Answer: My bottle says one fluid ounce per one gallon of water -- hope this helps!
Question: Could we use this to spray pesticides as mist? If yes, then how can we do that setting as I tried, but couldn't find such setting of nozzle
Answer: Good question. I just got mine and checked. It has 70% and 30% other ingredients and I can't see what the 'other' ingredients are right now. But it does stare that it is for organic gardening. However, I will be looking for some that is a 100% neem oil in future. Thanks for the intelligent question. I wonderered why it mixes so easily with water. The good thing is it only takes 2 table spoons to the gallon and seems to be doing the job it states it will.
Question: Does this unit have a "release pressure valve" (used for expelling air safely from container before opening
Answer: Bonnie the Neem oil doesn't appear to kill Japaneese beetles. We have the beetles and we spray the plants but they keep eating the plants. The only thing that seems to work is to pull the beetles off and step on them. I hope this is hepful.

User questions & answers

Question: It is ok to put Weed and Feed after putting this product but before 30 days are over. Says at the back to wait for 30 days before another application
Answer: You would want to wait the entire time before applying another product with fertilizer. If you have broadleaf weeds now, you can spot treat with Ortho Weed B Gon.
Question: I just applied Crabgrass preventer. How long must i wait to lay down seed to grow grass
Answer: In what I’ve read before, 6-8 weeks. At that point you should wait until fall, which is there ideal grass time in most climates. It gives the grass a chance to start growing on top, then winterize and grow strong roots so that spring will be awesome. About 3 years now I’ve been applying this strategy and find my grass is greener than all the neighbors. There is one neighbor who has a thicker lawn but he has a different slope in his yard and has been at it much longer. I will overtake him!
Question: How soon can I throw down some new seed? I would like more kentucky blue in my lawn
Answer: you have created a force field. only way is to put down new loam 1/2'' thick then seed . late august aerate lawn then seed,& do it like your feeding the chicken & those hens are hungry. next year you will not believe, keep your deck clean & blades sharp. GOOD LUCK
Question: Okay to use in August
Answer: I have Poa Annua and have been doing a lot of research on it. Many websites with information about Poa Annua say for effective control, besides Spring treatment it is good to put pre emergent down in August/September. Here is a quote from the Purdue University Extension website: "Poa annua is a winter annual that germinates in the late summer/early fall once soil temperatures fall below 70o F. Seedlings mature in the fall, overwinter in a vegetative state, and flower and produce seed in late spring and early summer." I just chatted with Scott's website and they said this product can be effective when used in this manner. I plan to apply it then AND next Spring. Most of the lawns in my development have been taken over by Poa Annua but I am still fighting the fight and hope to win or at least keep it to a minimum.

Get An Early Start This Spring

Protect your lawn all season long against listed weeds, including crabgrass, all while feeding for a fast green-up after winter.

When To Apply To Prevent Weeds

Apply in early spring to prevent the germination of crabgrass, chickweed, poa annua, and other common lawn weeds, before they start to spread. Apply before the 3rd or 4th mowing to protect all season long.

Tips For Lawn Care Success

First, regular feedings help your lawn look it’s best and provide the nutrients it needs to withstand the stress of weeds, weather and activity. Secondly, after you mow leave the grass clippings on the lawn. This allows grass to use water more effectively. Finally water, utilize nature’s sprinkler as much as possible. When you do have to water, do it between 6 and 10 am - less water is lost to evaporation and more reaches the roots.

Question: What is the difference between this and big bloom? Do you use 1 or the other, same time, or different timing for each. Thank you so much
Answer: It won't burn the grass just make sure you do it with alot of water afterwards.keep the grass seeds moist. Even better get some straw to cover the seeds. It will keep them moist. We use this.......... EZ-Straw Seeding Mulch with Tack - Biodegradable Organic Processed Straw – 2.5 CU FT Bale (covers up to 500 sq. ft.). we get it on amazon. User questions & answers

Question: Would I have to apply seed if there wasn’t any grass

Answer: Not sure what the ratio would be but if you contact them I'm sure you'll get a prompt answer, customer service is great
Question: How much area covered by one bottle
Answer: Hi there, The bottle will cover up to 3,200 square feet.
Question: Can you also use on a garden
Answer: If you apply monthly. the lawn begins strengthening. In time you will notice less stress to your lawn from the heat and lack of water during the hot days. This is mainly due to the Organic kelp found in this product. Look at label and keep away from Muriate of potash if its in your Label. That is basically Chlorine and that will dry out your soil and kill microbes that turn organic waste into food for Roots. Does the same for Gardens Too

Question: My back yard was just seeded with new grass. I was told to fertilize it once the grass just comes up, with a 20-15-10 mix. Will this fertilizer work
Answer: Hi, J. Catlin! Ratio of Scotts Lawn Food is 32-0-4 on a new bag that I have- the 15k sq ft bag has long been thrown in the trash. I elected to not use the bag I have left because it would have been TOO MUCH on my lawn!. This is NOT one of those items where ,if a little bit does a little good... you know the rest! You must follow the directions when using this product!!! As you can see from the first number (nitrogen), all manner of bad stuff will happen to the grass if over applied. Conversely, it will do a fantastic job if properly applied. At least that has been my experience when using the product. Good Luck! JBH

Natural & Organic

Scotts Natural Lawn Food is formulated with natural ingredients to green and feed your lawn naturally, and it is OMRI-Listed for organic use. Apply this lawn fertilizer during any season to any grass type. For best results, feed four times a year and allow 6 to 8 weeks between application.

Use Around Kids and Pets

You don’t have to worry about waiting after application before you can use your lawn again—it is safe to walk on immediately after application! Plus, this lawn food can be used around kids and pets.

Application

For best results, apply with a Scotts drop or rotary spreader. Grass will become greener within 1 to 3 weeks after application (may vary depending on weather conditions). Can even be used with new lawns, before or after seeding or sodding. See product label for complete instructions.

Tips for Lawn Care Success

First, regular feedings help your lawn look it’s best and provide the nutrients it needs to withstand the stresses of weeds, weather and activity.

Secondly, after you mow leave the grass clippings on the lawn! This allows grass to use water more effectively.

Finally, water; utilize nature’s sprinkler as much as possible. When you do have to water, do it between 6 and 10AM - less water is lost to evaporation and more reaches the roots.

User questions & answers

Question: is this Spike for Dogwood Trees
Answer: I do not know about dogwood trees. I have used this spike on my Hickory tree, Ash tree, Maple tree and Spruce tree. They have all done well. Grew larger with many leaves. I am not a 'gardener' but person who uses fertilizer on my lawn, shrubs, flowers and trees. Dogwood is a deciduous tree and I would think that these spikes would not harm it -- as I have used it with my deciduous trees.
Question: We have a 25 year old (40ft) maple tree in tx that doesnt look healthy. Will this product work? How should we use it? Thank you

User questions & answers

Question: Is there a trick to using these. I need to use 48 for my maple tree and they dissolve so slowly. It will take a very long time this way! Help
Answer: LOL This is not a bird feeder, it's a plant root feeder.
Question: is it really that flimsy
Answer: N-P-K(nitrogen-phosphorus-potash) is 2-8-4 for this product, the middle number being phosphorus, which is what the plant needs most during the blooming stage. Had really good results with this fertilizer.
Question: Do you hook a hose to this
Answer: I think they are backordered trying to fill distributor orders first. It was a spring that caught us all off guard and with low inventory
Question: How many suet cakes are included
Answer: The recommended amount to use is 2-3 teaspoons per gallon of water. There are 8 pints (16 oz) in a gallon of water; So 1/4 to 3/8 teaspoons per pint (16 ounces) but be sure to check your pH level in that pint of water. You will most likely need to use pH up to balance the acidity. This is a very acidic fertilizer. My pH tap water is 8. and to get a pH of 6.0 I need to buffer with an equal amount of pH up.

Product description

1 Gallon of Liquid Concentrate. What Makes GS Plant Foods' Organic Liquid Fish Fertilizer so much better than the competitor’s? First, our product is made only from fresh, sustainably sourced fish, untainted by dangerous coastal pollutants. We use a cold enzymatic process that leaves the natural fish proteins and beneficial oils and collagen. Don’t be fooled by cheaper products that are diluted by as much as 50% water- ours is 97% pure! GS Plant Foods' Organic Liquid Fish is an all-natural fresh fish liquid fertilizer; a high quality organic product that gives excellent plant growth, rebuilds soil, and offers higher production yields. Fish fertilizer has been used by ‘in the know’ gardeners for decades, and now it is available to you! This bottle is 1 gallon of concentrate that will yield as much as 128 gallons of finished liquid fertilizer (just add water). GS Plant Foods’ Liquid Fish N-P-K is 2-3-1 Do not be deceived by this. In studies at the University of Massachusetts, our product outperformed standard 10-10-.10 products. UMass has demonstrated that 80% of the nitrogen in standard fertilizers either gasses or leeches off - our material does neither due to the oils and collagens in the product which help lock it into the soil. That fact alone gives our Liquid Fish an equivalent nitrogen level of 15. GS Plant Foods- High Performance Products for your Plants!

User questions & answers

Question: In the listing, it says the n-p-k is 3-3-3, but in the description, it says the n-p-k is 2-3-1. which is it
Answer: Can't find the answer on the actual bottle, but it works on any plant, including grass. I'm using the Fish & Kelp blend.
Question: Is heat used in the concentration process
Answer: No, not in GS Plant Foods process. Our manufacturing process is purer than any other method we could find, and we do not strip out valuable elements, (like fish oil) as many competitive products do. This results in a much more beneficial product.
Question: Does it mean I can add two tablespoons with a gallon of water keep in a watering can and spray my cucumber in a grow bag
Answer: Haven't used it in 3 years but if I do remember it right it can't sit more then 24 hours or it becomes toxic to plants.
Question: what is the ratio of this product
Answer: Instructions on the bottle say to use: for houseplants, 1 Tablespoon per gallon of water; for outside plants, 2 Tablespoons per gallon; and for trees and shrubs, 8 Tablespoons per gallon of water. Minimum dilution is 1 part fertilizer to 15 parts water.P.S. If you use for houseplants, it stinks horribly for at least 2 days.
