13 best mondo grass seeds

Mondo grass, scientifically known as Ophiopogon japonicus, is a popular ornamental plant used in landscaping and gardening. It is not typically grown from seeds, but rather through division or by purchasing established plants. Here's some information about mondo grass:

  1. Appearance: Mondo grass is a low-growing perennial that forms dense, grass-like clumps. It features dark green, narrow, strap-like leaves that can range from 6 to 12 inches in height.

  2. Growth Habit: It is known for its ability to spread and form a ground cover. There are two common varieties: mondo grass (Ophiopogon japonicus) and dwarf mondo grass (Ophiopogon japonicus 'Nana'), with the latter being even smaller in stature.

  3. Landscape Use: Mondo grass is often used as a ground cover in shaded or partially shaded areas of gardens, around trees, or along borders. It provides a lush, evergreen look and helps suppress weed growth.

  4. Maintenance: This plant is relatively low-maintenance. It tolerates a variety of soil conditions but thrives in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Regular watering and occasional fertilization can help it thrive.

  5. Propagation: While mondo grass can be grown from seeds, it is more commonly propagated by dividing established clumps or by purchasing nursery-grown plants. Dividing clumps every few years can help rejuvenate the plant and control its spread.

  6. Hardiness: Mondo grass is typically hardy in USDA zones 6-11, making it suitable for a wide range of climates.

  7. Aesthetic Appeal: The dark green foliage of mondo grass provides an attractive contrast to other garden plants and can create a striking visual effect when used as a border or ground cover.

In summary, mondo grass is a popular ornamental plant used in landscaping and gardening. While it can be grown from seeds, it is more commonly propagated through division or by purchasing established plants. It is prized for its lush, grass-like appearance and ability to serve as a ground cover in various garden settings.

User questions & answers

Question: What type of sun does this plant prefer
Answer: Full sun to partial shade. But in my experience partial shade is favorable for insects like caterpillars, pill bugs and ants and all of them damage the plant badly. However the plant's growth is fast so it helps a lot in this case. And full sun helps it very much.
Question: What is the duffrence between ornamental peanut plant and herniaria glabra
Answer: This is so good I am about to order about five more packs because it did it's sealed up the yard where I put the first part nicely
Question: How winter hardy is this ground cover and how much foot traffic can it withstand
Answer: Herniaria is described as being able to withstand light foot traffic. Some of mine are still establishing but I've walked (carefully) on them and even the younger ones weren't damaged. They seem like a fairly resilient plant once established. I've read that this plant is native to mountain areas of Europe where I'd expect it to get pretty cold in the winter. I've planted these for the first time this year in So. CA and haven't see them yet in the winter. Our winters are quite mild. You'll have to research the max limit of their hardiness yourself. Check out what will be an update to my reviewon Amazon for these seeds. Good luck. - Terry
Question: How will this hold up to dogs
Answer: A couple of things. These seeds did NOT end up growing the plant I previously knew as Herniaria Glabra (based on several labeled H. Glabra plants I bought at my local nursery). Having said that, I actually really love whatever plant this is. It's held up to dog pee MUCH better than the plants I purchased labeled H. Glabra (no yellowing despite multiple daily pees). It also held up beautifully over this winter with lots of snow and ice, as well as during our drought last summer. I'll be planting more this year.

User questions & answers

Question: Once planted how wide do they spread? For example, if I am using for edging how close together
Answer: The mondo grass in the picture is dwarf. With containers and soil it's 4 inch tall the plants from the top of the soil are not taller then 1.5-2 inch. We ship it in boxed 4 inch tall. Thanks Wolfgang
Question: Are they plugs or do they come with soil
Answer: I don’t think so, I planted some around some stones and as long as I keep it watered, just like other grass it has done great.
Question: what size are these plants
Answer: This dwarf grass is extremely slow growing. Even slower then it’s ‘normal’ cousin Ophiopogon japonicus. The plants come in 3.5 inch containers and can be pulled and divided in to 5-6 plant lets each, so one would end up with 100 or so plant tips. Still full coverage hard to achieve unless you purchase a lot of these 22x10 inch flats and plant them dense.
Question: can you mow mondo grass
Answer: No, you can't separate the plants. They were beautiful, very healthy and they are small. They are doing well and all are very green.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this grow in zone 5 on an east side with at least 4 hours of sun per day
Answer: These are cold hardy to zone 6
Question: Can these be grown in full Florida sun
Answer: It was great a little expensive
Question: how tall will these plants get
Answer: I planted my plants 4" apart and it depends on the area of how many plants are needed. I also recommend not to buy from a third party through Amazon. I have two main reasons for saying this: 1. The shipping companies like UPS and others will handle your plants very roughly. It could mean that your plants could be turned upside down and in total disarray when delivered. 2. The plants brought at Home Depot or Lowes are much healthy and perform a lot better. Also, you get more for your money.
Question: Is this the type of short grass that never needs to be cut and will spread quickly to fill in an area that is sectioned off with metal boundaries
Answer: YES, My experiences with the shipping companies is not good because they do not handle you plants properly. By the time I receive them, they're all beat up and displaced in the containers. The healthiest and best plants come from Home Depot or Lowes.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the hardiness zone
Answer: I have this in zone 8 and it only gets 4 hours of sun per day and it looks beautiful. I looked up your question on google and yes, it does grow in zone 5, even after a tough winter. These plants are just beautiful and I just love them.
Question: Are these in a 4" pot
Answer: I think Florida sun would be a bit too much for these to handle. A more appropriate planting would be one of our Liriope varieties. Super Blue Liriope is a fantastic choice
Question: What to i do with these things they are tiny. look nothing like the pics u show. can i put in the ground
Answer: Between 12-15" tall.
Question: Can I separate these into more than one plant
Answer: Each individual plant will spread to around a foot wide in a year but no further, because it is clumping rather than spreading. So that means you would need enough plants to plant them around a foot apart to have your location filled densely in a year.
