12 best lawn grass seeds
Lawn grass seeds are an essential component of creating and maintaining a lush, green lawn. These seeds are specifically cultivated and designed to grow into grass varieties that are suitable for lawns. Here is some information about lawn grass seeds:
Grass Varieties: There are various types of grasses used for lawns, and the choice of grass seed depends on factors such as climate, soil type, and intended use. Common grass varieties include Kentucky Bluegrass, Bermuda grass, Fescue, Ryegrass, and Zoysia grass.
Cool-Season vs. Warm-Season Grasses: Grasses are often categorized as cool-season or warm-season. Cool-season grasses thrive in cooler climates and are typically planted in the fall or early spring. Warm-season grasses are better suited to hot climates and are typically planted in late spring or early summer.
Sun vs.Shade Tolerance: Different grass varieties have varying levels of sun and shade tolerance. Some grasses are better suited for full sun, while others can thrive in partially shaded areas.
Germination and Growth: Grass seeds go through a germination process where they sprout and establish roots. This process requires adequate moisture, sunlight, and temperature conditions. It can take several weeks for grass to become established and fill in a lawn.
Soil Preparation: Before planting grass seeds, it's important to prepare the soil by removing weeds, rocks, and debris. Soil should be well-tilled and leveled to create an even surface for planting.
Seeding Methods: Grass seeds can be spread manually by hand or with the use of a seed spreader for even distribution. Proper spacing and coverage are crucial for achieving a uniform lawn.
Watering and Care: Newly planted grass seeds require consistent watering to keep the soil moist. Once the grass is established, it's important to follow a regular watering and maintenance schedule to encourage healthy growth.
Fertilization: Lawn grasses benefit from periodic fertilization to provide essential nutrients for growth and color. The type and timing of fertilizer application depend on the grass variety and local soil conditions.
Mowing and Maintenance: Regular mowing helps maintain the desired height and appearance of the lawn. The ideal mowing height varies depending on the grass type.
Disease and Pest Management: Lawn grasses can be susceptible to diseases and pests. Monitoring for signs of issues and taking appropriate measures, such as applying pesticides or fungicides, can help protect the lawn.
Overseeding: Over time, lawns may develop thin or bare spots. Overseeding involves spreading grass seeds over existing grass to thicken the turf and improve its appearance.
Seasonal Care: Lawn care practices can vary by season. For example, in the fall, lawn aeration and dethatching may be necessary to prepare the lawn for winter dormancy.
Choosing the right grass seed and following proper lawn care practices are essential for achieving and maintaining a healthy, vibrant lawn. It's important to consider local climate conditions and soil types when selecting grass varieties and to follow a consistent lawn care routine to keep your lawn looking its best.

User questions & answers
Question: | What kind of grass is this? Would like to see the back of the bag to see |
Answer: | How do I take a picture? There are 9+ ingrediences. I love the grass. Thick and a beautiful shade of green. That's about all I can say. I love it and it was my first time planting grass seed. I'm very pleased with the grass. |
Question: | What variety of grass seed is in this mix (i.e. %s |
Answer: | Hi, I am so I can't give you percentages of mix. The seeds are covered with a blue coating of fertilizer, which stays on for about 5 days even watering 3 times a day. This also keeps the birds from eating 20% of it. This is the 5th bag I have ordered as I have 1/3 acre of all weeds and dirt when I recently bought my house. It is an excellent blend and covers very well and spreads out and fills in. I have large areas that get 90% shade and it grows almost as fast as the seeds in full sun. Very happy with this seed. Can't tell you the blend, but it looks beautiful and no weeds at all. The grass comes up fast and full. I think You would be very happy with this product. Sincerely, Mark |
Question: | Is this grass okay for Arizona,s dry climate |
Answer: | No. The grass is similar to a winter rye grass that that does OK in the cooler winter months, but died in Texas as soon as it got hotter and dry. I would not recommend this grass for any southern hot and dry climate. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the coverage ratio for this seed |
Answer: | Sorry, I cannot remember as it's been 4 summers ago that I sowed this onto my new lawn in mid-Missouri where the heat is usually very intense in summer and winters are quite cold. My lawn is the envy of the entire neighborhood and I am very pleased with this seed. We broadcast this seed like we would have any other kind of grass seed and then spread a fairly thick blanket of straw over the entire lawn. We have an automatic sprinkler system and kept it watered twice daily at first. The color of our lawn is just beautiful and remains mostly green even in the winter. |
Question: | What is the tested date and expiration date for the seed |
Answer: | Test date is when they actually tested the seed to confirm the germination rates. Expiration date is the date that the expected germination rate will significantly drop off compared to the label claim. Off course this varies significantly based on environmental conditions. that's why northern states have a longer shelf life than hotter sates. Bags stored in sealed, cool and dry areas will last longer than a bag with a small hole that sat on an outdoor shelf exposed to heat, sun and humidity at a big box store. |
Question: | what is the mixn this seed |
Answer: | Scotts Turf Builder, Heat Tolerant Blue Mix, 16.57% Endeavor II Tall Fescue, 14.62% Gazelle II Tall Fescue, 13,65% Dynamic II Tall Fescue, 3.9% Tharmal Blue Kentucky Bluegrass. Other ingredients - Water Smart Plus Fertilizer Coating. We've tried tons of diff grass seeds for diff projects at diff properties - this is absolutely #1 in our book. Whenever we have another project - this is what we will be buying!!! |
Question: | Is this a wide blade grass? how does it look compared to kbg |
Answer: | This is a mix of Tall fescue and KBG (about 30-40% of the seed is a form of KBG called hybrid KBG i.e kBG crossed with Texas blue grass. The kbg blades on here are a medium width blade (essentially looks like normal kbg) . The tall fescue varieties in here are also medium bladed - will blend really well with the kbg. The caveat is though, like any tall fescue, if the turf stand is thin, the tall fescue blades will widen significantly to fill the space. Once the space thickens, the tall fescue blades width will come back down to normal. The trick is to to keep your stand thick via good cultural practices and this will be a good looking turf. What's nice about the kbg in here (the cultivar is called Thermal blue) , is that its aggressive and will rapidly fill in any voids to keep the stand thick. Thermal Blue is known for having very good heat and drought tolerance, it will be able to hold up to the same conditions as tall fescue. It's only draw back is that it's not quite as dark as some of the more elite kbgs and has a bit of a dull look. The tall fescue counters it very nicely and as a mix, it's a very attractive and hardy stand overall. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the advantage of Scotts exclusive grass seed coating?
A: Scotts WaterSmart PLUS Coating Technology absorbs water, feeds and protects your newly planted grass seed.
It absorbs twice as much water, and holds it twice as long, as uncoated seed to help prevent the seed from drying out–even if you miss a day of watering.
It feeds with essential nutrients that jumpstart growth, resulting in taller, thicker, greener grass.
It protects with a fungicide to help keep seedlings safe from harmful diseases that can attack newly planted areas.
Q: How long does it take for my newly planted grass to begin growing?
A: Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns will begin to grow in 6-14 days, but can take 30-60 days to become established depending on seasonal conditions. Make sure you continue to water as directed.
Q: How much do I need to water my new grass?
A: Watering is crucial for seeding success. Water daily or as needed to keep the soil surface moist until the seedlings reach at least 2 inches tall.
Q: When is the best time to plant Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns?
A: Cool-season grasses grow best when temperatures are between 60-80°F. Early fall is the best time to seed because of its shorter days, cooler nights and heavier dews. Your most successful seeding time is right around Labor Day. Seeding 2 weeks before or after that easy-to-remember holiday gives your new seedlings time to build strong roots before the winter. Spring is also a great time to plant cool-season grasses because of its moderate temperatures and heavier rainfall.
Q: How soon can I mow after planting new grass?
A: You can mow the seedlings when they reach 3 inches in height.
Q: When can I use weed killers and/or weed preventers on my new grass?
A: If you want to prevent weeds from invading while growing new grass, we recommend using Scotts Turf Builder Starter Food for New Grass + Weed Preventer. Never apply weed preventers to your lawn before planting grass seed unless they have been designed to be used when seeding.
All weed control products are different, but in general, it is recommended to wait until the new grass has been mowed at least 4 times before using a crabgrass preventer or other weed control product (unless the product is designed to be used when seeding). Always refer to the product label for specific information related to weed control products you are using.
Q: What types of grass seed are contained in Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns?
A: The Heat-Tolerant Blue Mix for Tall Fescue Lawns contains specially selected seed varieties.
Kentucky Bluegrass: Kentucky bluegrass provides a deep green color, medium texture, and aggressively spreading roots, giving you a thick, lush lawn. It performs well in high traffic, moderate shade and sunny areas.
Tall Fescue: Tall fescue is a wide-blade grass that grows in clumps. It was chosen for this mix because it thrives in high traffic areas and has low water requirements. Tall fescue has deep roots and grows in both areas of sun and shade.

User questions & answers
Question: | How does this do in a climate as dry and hot as New Mexico |
Answer: | I'm in Albuquerque and I think it came up nicely. I did use germination blankets to help my new lawn but with a sprinkler system i dont think they were needed. The sqft on the description is for over seeding. New lawn is 1500 I think. So I'm having to get another bag because it's a little thin in some places but where it got good coverage is growing beautifully. |
Question: | Is it good for Denver, Colorado area |
Answer: | It is. TTTF with Bluegrass. Stays green with 1- 1 1/2 inches a week. I’m in 80015 Great cool season grass |
Question: | Will this survive Minnesota's harsh winters |
Answer: | Yes, as long as its planted it the right season and has a chance to establish itself. |
Question: | How to plan the seed—walk around my land and throw it on the land by hand? Pour the seed into the machine letting the machine disperse the seed |
Answer: | You could use either method. The seed needs contact with the soil. The best approach is to aerate, dethatch, than overseed. This will looses the soil the most for seed to soil contact. If you have any dry hard dirt areas use a metal rake first to scratch the surface so there's some loose soil. Than its all about water!!!!! The seed needs to stay moist but not soaked. And it needs to stay moist until it germinates or it will go dormant. Watch out for birds. They eat seed. If you see them all over your lawn, either turn your sprinklers on(i control mine from my cell) or let the dogs out If you dont have dogs buy some! Or all your seed will be eaten |

User questions & answers
Question: | Are these phytosanitary certified |
Answer: | The Turf Builder Bermudagrass watersmart plus coating is not phytosanitary certified. |
Question: | will it grow in shade in ok |
Answer: | No. Go with fescue seeds for shade. Besides, Bermuda seeds have very low germination rate. |
Question: | Can I use it up north |
Answer: | Bermuda grass needs full sun and wont really take off growing rhizomes until temps reach 80+ for a week or more. Also, night time temps should stay fairly warm. If you live in an area where this is not the case purchase fescue. I live in central NC and it grows well but just an hour or so west from here it is too cool to be a good performer. |
Question: | How many square feet will this cover |
Answer: | A five LB bag will cover 5,000 square feet -- so they say. But, it depends on how you spread it. DO NOT attempt to spread it if your SOIL TEMPERATURE is less than 70 degrees. Get a soil temp gauge. And even then, you still have to water it with a light spray every hour. I tried it at 64 degrees, and it just didn't do ANYTHING until it got up to 70 degrees. Good luck with that. |

User questions & answers
Question: | can this be used in hydroseeder |
Answer: | Not familiar with a hydro seeder so I cannot answer that. |
Question: | How long it can grow after plant |
Answer: | WwR, it will take up to 21 days for all the grass seeds in the Scotts EZ Seed Patch and Repair Sun and Shade to germinate. |
Question: | Can this be spread in the fall |
Answer: | What Zone you are in. If you are in the North, probably not but better wait till late Winter or early Spring. However I had bad experience with Scott on this Bermuda Seed package. If you read carefully, the 10 lb package actually has less than one lb of seeds. Small percentage is fertilizer. 99% are mulch which you can purchase it much less price. It also depends how many sq. ft to plan to cover. This 10 lbs package covers less than 200 sq.ft. It also stated gauantee to germinate in any temperature, even exreme heat, it did not happened that way. |
Question: | Does this grass reproduce or spread |
Answer: | No, Tall fescue is a "bunch grass" and does not spread. Over the years a healthy "bunch" will get a bit bigger to help fill in, but not really spread |

Prep, Apply, Water
Scotts EZ Seed is a revolutionary seeding mix that takes care of the seed for you, so you can grow thick, beautiful grass anywhere!* Scotts unique growing material absorbs water like a sponge, expanding to surround the seed in a moist, protective layer. Just prep the ground, put it down, water and let it go to work!
*Subject to proper care.
Prep
Prepare the area you want to grow grass by removing dead grass and loosening hard soil to help tiny seedlings root.
Apply
Evenly apply EZ Seed so the area is mostly covered, but bare ground is still visible, so that seed can reach the soil. The mulch will expand 4x upon watering to help cover the seed and keep it moist (use half as much for thin areas). Water
A deep and thorough watering is the key to success. Gently water the area until EZ Seed is completely saturated and no more water is being absorbed (this may take several minutes). Avoid pooling water. When EZ Seed begins to turn light brown, it's time to water again. Keep kids, pets and lawn mowers off newly planted seedlings until the grass is 3 inches high.

First, shake the bag to mix the contents. Next, evenly spread a thin layer of PatchMaster Lawn Repair Mix so the area is completely covered.
3. Water
A deep and thorough initial watering is the key to success. Gently water the area until PatchMaster Lawn Repair Mix is completely saturated and no more water is being absorbed (this may take several minutes). Avoid pooling water or run-off. User questions & answers
Question: | Is this the same st augustine as grown in south Florida |
Answer: | The product listed is "Tall Fescue" which is a cool-season grass, not meant for south Florida. |
Question: | Grass seeds is not growing |
Answer: | Don't overwater, just mist it daily to keep the seeds moist. Also you should put a little soil over the seed or scratch them into the soil otherwise they wont grow if just laying on top of the soil. |
Question: | Will this grow in the fall |
Answer: | I am not sure but I am planning to toss some more out over the few bare batches I have remaining within the next couple of weeks. I don't know where you live so I guess it depends on the weather. I live in Clovis, CA and it is supposed to be 87 degrees today with the temperature in the next week or so being 89, 92, 85, 83, and then mid to upper 70's for a while. If you live in a similar area, you are probably safe to plant. I think with temps in the 70's and good watering, the grass should get off to a good start. As far as growing in the Fall, our lawn stayed green all Winter. We had very few freezes last year and none of the grass died. Good luck. |
Question: | Is this grass perennial and grows back yearly |
Answer: | If you're using perennial grass Stop! Also I'm pretty sure there is no such thing as perennial grass anyway. I mean who's gonna buy grass that dies every year and also disappears? |
