9 best bermuda seeds
Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon) is a warm-season grass that's commonly used for lawns, sports fields, and golf courses. Here's some information related to Bermuda seeds:
Warm-Season Grass: Bermuda grass is known as a warm-season grass, meaning it thrives in warm climates and goes dormant in cooler temperatures.
Drought-Tolerant: One of the significant advantages of Bermuda grass is its excellent drought tolerance. It can survive with minimal water, making it a popular choice in regions with limited water resources.
Fast-Growing: Bermuda grass is known for its rapid growth, allowing it to quickly establish a dense turf. This can be advantageous for quickly covering large areas.
High Traffic Tolerance: It's known for its ability to withstand heavy foot traffic, which makes it suitable for sports fields, parks, and areas with lots of activity.
Sun-Loving: Bermuda grass thrives in full sun and may struggle in shaded areas. It requires at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day for optimal growth.
Low Maintenance: Once established, Bermuda grass generally requires less maintenance compared to some other grass varieties. It can withstand mowing heights as low as 0.5 inches.
Overseeding for Winter Color: In some regions, Bermuda grass may go dormant and turn brown during winter. To maintain green color year-round, some people overseed with a cool-season grass in the fall.
Types of Bermuda Grass Varieties: There are several varieties of Bermuda grass, each with its own specific characteristics. Some popular varieties include Common Bermuda, Tifway 419, Celebration, and Princess 77.
Seeding and Establishment: Bermuda grass can be established from seeds or sod. When using seeds, it's important to prepare the soil properly, ensure good seed-to-soil contact, and provide adequate water during the germination period.
Invasive Potential: While Bermuda grass can be desirable for lawns and sports fields, it's considered invasive in some areas. It can spread quickly and may outcompete native vegetation.
Remember that the success of growing Bermuda grass depends on factors like climate, soil type, and maintenance practices. It's always recommended to consult with local experts or extension services for specific advice tailored to your location.

User questions & answers
Question: | Are these phytosanitary certified |
Answer: | The Turf Builder Bermudagrass watersmart plus coating is not phytosanitary certified. |
Question: | will it grow in shade in ok |
Answer: | No. Go with fescue seeds for shade. Besides, Bermuda seeds have very low germination rate. |
Question: | Can I use it up north |
Answer: | Bermuda grass needs full sun and wont really take off growing rhizomes until temps reach 80+ for a week or more. Also, night time temps should stay fairly warm. If you live in an area where this is not the case purchase fescue. I live in central NC and it grows well but just an hour or so west from here it is too cool to be a good performer. |
Question: | How many square feet will this cover |
Answer: | A five LB bag will cover 5,000 square feet -- so they say. But, it depends on how you spread it. DO NOT attempt to spread it if your SOIL TEMPERATURE is less than 70 degrees. Get a soil temp gauge. And even then, you still have to water it with a light spray every hour. I tried it at 64 degrees, and it just didn't do ANYTHING until it got up to 70 degrees. Good luck with that. |

Certified Arden 15 hybrid bermuda grass seed is Pennington Seed's latest upgrade to Princess 77. Good quality turfgrass with excellent color and superior early spring green up! A two clone intraspecific hybrid that provides a more uniform turf compared to other seeded cultivars! Arden 15 has an improved cold tolerance which makes it an ideal solution for planting in transitional markets as far north as Tulsa, Louisville and Richmond. This variety has a faster grow-in versus Princess 77. This Bermuda Grass seed is suitable for planting on home golf greens, a first for seeded Bermuda grasses. It will not give you the same quality as hybrid Tif Bermudas that are used on golf courses, but for the average home putting green it will do well. Arden 15 bermuda grass seed can be used on golf course fairways and tees - manicured home lawns - well maintained sports turf and parks. It has several advantages over traditional Bermuda grasses: Arden 15, just has a higher overall turf quality than all commercial seeded varieties in U.S. and international tests. This bermuda grass variety has a beautiful dark green color, medium fine leaf texture. Just as its predecessor Princess 77 had, Arden 15 has a high leaf density as well as a moderate spring greenup and fall color retention, and it is easily established from grass seed. Coated seeds are easier to spread and retain moisture better which improves germination.
- Establishment Time: Under ideal conditions, full coverage may be attained between 4 to 6 weeks. If planting the putting green seed occurs early or late in the season, more time may be needed for establishment.
- Days to Germinate: After planting Arden 15 bermuda seed, with ideal conditions, germination may begin within 7 days. Allow 10 to 14 days for completion for bermudagrass seed.
- Where to Plant: In full sun on well drained soil. Proper drainage is essential for successful establishment and the development of a mature, healthy putting green.
- Time to Plant: Plant Bermuda Grass seed when soil temperatures are consistently above 65° F
- Arden 15 Bermuda Grass Seeding Rate: 2 - 3 pounds of coated seed per 1000 square feet of certified seed, hulled, coated form

- Establishment Time: Under ideal conditions, full coverage may be attained between 4 to 6 weeks. If planting the putting green seed occurs early or late in the season, more time may be needed for establishment.
- First Mowing: When grass is 3 inches tall. It is recommended that no more than 1/3 of the leaf blade be removed per mowing.
- Mower/Mowing Height/Frequency: For a Arden 15 putting green the reel mower recommended/minimum height is manageable at 3/16 inch (5mm). It maintains good leaf density at mowing heights under 1.25 inch when mowed with reel mowers. Can be mowed at higher heights for general purpose home lawns (1.25 up to 3 inches) - Rotary mowers are fine for heights above 1.25 inches. Most home / commercial lawns are best maintained at 1.5 to 2.5 inches for a good overall look. Rotary mowers can usually be used at heights above 1.5 inches.
- Winter Over-seeding: May be done for year round green color, but not generally recommended on Bermudagrass less than 6 to 8 months of age. New turf: 2 - 3 pounds of Arden 15 grass seed per 1,000 square feet. Plant the home golf green seed when soil temperature reaches 65 degrees in spring up until a minimum of 6 weeks before frost in fall.

Question: | Does the label say what VARIETY of Bermuda Grass this is? Thank you |
Answer: | Yes it does. The variety of Bermuda Grass is Sunbird Bermuda Grass |
Question: | How do you bird-proof |
Answer: | I seed in the late fall. After seeding spread a thick layer of straw over the seeded area. This will keep the birds away and keep the ground moister without the worry of mold or fungus growth on the seeds. I plant in the fall so the seed is in place as soon as the spring rains start so the grass gets an early start. |
Question: | when can i overseed after using Weed Preventer |
Answer: | since plants require spacing for height & fruiting reqmnts, that is why is says that on it.You do not want to put too many plants too close to each other so there not'choked' on each others roots, grow space....happy gardening if you want to over seed a lawn.. do a simple soil test and give to the local ag dept to test for the concentration of weed killer in soil..as long as.not eaten by ponies but lawn and lawnseed, does contain some weed seeds in it contac the mfg directly for the answer too or chk the MSDS sheet |
Question: | Is this a good grass for under a tree and dry soil |
Answer: | From Japan For white coating of seeds, it is easy to understand when you sow. Germinated in the 5th humidity of 60%, in 30 degree heat. It was a good amount to just 30 square meters. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Do you have to prep the yard before spreading? Or can you just spread this product without prep |
Answer: | I’ve tried both and prepping the yard first gives better results. |
Question: | Does it grow well in southern Florida |
Answer: | Yes, it helps your grass grow. This is not grass seed. This ensures great grass growth. We are in Coastal Georgia so almost identical weather conditions. |
Question: | Other brands pledge 99% Weed Free.. or so, this brand don't say/mention anything about weed! Did u notice/expereince any weed growth with these seeds |
Answer: | Anytime u seed a lawn there will be weed growth because you water extra hard for moisture and weeds are opportunists! You just have to spot spray and promote the best conditions to get the Bermuda grass to succeed. Sort of like with anything else in life!! |
Question: | What seed is in this? It says mix. Is it bermuda, or does it have added fescue or others |
Answer: | It's Bermuda grass seed only. FYI: I used this product a few years ago and less than 5% of the seeds actually germinated. For the price of the product, I was sorely disappointed. Your mileage may vary. |
