10 best at home soil test kits
At-home soil test kits are handy tools for gardeners and homeowners who want to assess the quality and composition of their soil without the need for professional testing. These kits are typically related to gardening, lawn care, and outdoor home maintenance. Here's what you should know about at-home soil test kits:
Purpose: Soil test kits are designed to help you determine the pH level, nutrient content, and other important characteristics of your soil. This information is crucial for optimizing plant growth, adjusting fertilization, and improving overall soil health.
pH Testing: Most soil test kits include pH testing as a fundamental component. Soil pH levels affect nutrient availability to plants, and different plants thrive in specific pH ranges. Kits often come with color-coded test strips or solutions to measure pH accurately.
Nutrient Analysis: Some soil test kits provide basic nutrient analysis, assessing levels of essential elements like nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). This information helps gardeners decide on appropriate fertilizers and soil amendments.
Organic Matter and Texture: Advanced soil test kits may also assess organic matter content and soil texture, which can influence water retention, aeration, and drainage. Soil texture is typically categorized as sandy, loamy, or clayey.
Simple Procedures: At-home soil testing is typically straightforward and does not require specialized knowledge. Most kits come with step-by-step instructions for collecting soil samples and performing tests.
Interpretation Guides: Many kits include guides or charts to help users interpret their results and make recommendations for soil amendments or adjustments based on the findings.
Multiple Tests: Some kits offer multiple tests, allowing you to assess several areas of your garden or lawn, each with different soil conditions.
Speed and Convenience: At-home soil test kits provide quick results, usually within minutes or hours, allowing you to make timely decisions about soil management.
Cost-Effective: These kits are cost-effective compared to professional soil testing services, making them a practical choice for regular soil monitoring and maintenance.
Maintenance: Properly maintaining your soil, based on the results of these tests, can lead to healthier plants, improved crop yields, and a more vibrant garden.
Brand Variety: Various brands produce at-home soil test kits, offering different features and levels of sophistication. Some well-known brands include Luster Leaf, Rapitest, and Soil Savvy.
Online Resources: Some soil test kit manufacturers also provide online resources and customer support to assist users in understanding their results and making appropriate adjustments.
When using an at-home soil test kit, it's essential to follow the provided instructions carefully to obtain accurate results. Regular soil testing can be an essential part of successful gardening and lawn care, helping you maintain optimal soil conditions for your plants' growth and health.

User questions & answers
Question: | Are there instructions on how to take a soil sample? Are any delays to be expected with the quarantine |
Answer: | Hi, Yes, we provide full instructions on how to use our test kit and take a soil sample. We have not been experiencing any delays and are up and running at full capacity. We typically have samples analyzed within 1-2 days of arriving at our lab. |
Question: | How can I test my soil to see if it is contaminated |
Answer: | I was looking here for a soil test kit... MY local Agriculture Center is emailing me a form to send in my own sample to the U of F agriculture center. THEY only charge 10 bucks, so, do a littler research and you will find other options available to you, and usually at a much lesser cost... Just FYI ;o) |
Question: | how many samples can you send in (eg., lawn, flower beds |
Answer: | Thank you for the inquiry. Each MySoil Professional Soil Test Kit is good for one soil sample. If you were testing a lawn & flower beds, I would recommend two separate kits (one test kit for your lawn and one for your flower beds). If you reach out to our customer service staff, we can provide additional sampling tutorials and address any further questions you may have. |

Specific Product Recommendations
To make it even easier for our customers to have the most success, we have vetted a number of vendors and quality soil products that match your fertilizer recommendation.
Advantages
• Measures and reports your plant-available nutrient levels
• Uses your field-moist soils in its most natural state to measure nutrient levels
• Recommendations are based on your soil’s nutrient release matched to plant uptake requirements
Why Are MySoil’s Recommendations So Effective?
It’s not the total amount of nutrient in the soil, but that soil’s ability to release those nutrients in forms and amounts that match plant uptake demands during the time they are growing.
Science
Soils often contain an abundance of nutrients that may or may not be in available forms to plants during the time they are growing. Conventional soil analysis methods measure nutrient levels by drying and grinding your soil and extracting nutrients with different chemicals. This is still a "guess" with regards to what chemical extraction may best represent the available nutrient levels in your soil. MySoil uses the customer's field-moist soil to adsorb available nutrients without using chemicals that can over or underestimate nutrient levels and soil release. The MySoil Analysis Method does not require your soil to be dried and ground, two processes that change the physical and chemical characteristics of the natural soil.

User questions & answers
Question: | what does "plug and read" mean? I'm wondering if there are no batteries, does this have to be plugged in, does it charge from an outlet |
Answer: | Hi, After dipping your test strip into the soil/water mix the test strip pads should match one of the vertical columns on the color chart which will correspond to a given pH number. If you are have trouble interpreting the results we are glad to take a look at a picture. You can reach us using the contact information on the box that the test strips came in or through the Amazon messaging system. We do this all the time for customers. Question: | Soil ph is reading an 8 on every soil does anyone have issues with the soil ph. i even tried in a soil that's ph is |
Answer: | The Garden Tutor Soil pH Test Strips are calibrated for soil testing only, so just dipping the test strips into straight water won't give you an accurate pH reading of the water. The strips use reagents that react to the presence of dissolved solids/minerals found in soils. |
Question: | My meter just came in and it is showing wildly different readings when I test the same exact spot |
Answer: | Hi, Thank you for your question. The Garden Tutor pH test strips are designed to help you zero in on your soil's pH level. So if you are getting truly inconsistent readings, it could be that there are contaminants in your soil that are skewing the results. You should also double-check your results and make sure you are following the test instructions and interpreting your results correctly. The goal is to find the column on the color chart that best matches the colors on the pH strip from top to bottom. This can take a little work. If you think you are getting inconsistent results or want help with interpretation, please reach out to us from our Amazon seller profile and click "Ask a question" We can respond with details on how we can help interpret your results. Please know that we always stand behind our products, so if you are not satisfied, we will make sure you get a full refund Best, Angus |
Question: | Can you use this also to check the ph in water before you water your plants or just soil |
Answer: | Thank you for your excellent question. The pH of the water can affect your results. In areas that have excessively hard water (water with lots of minerals in it), the pH of the water will be strongly alkaline (pH of 8.5 and higher), and this can impact the reading you will get from your Garden Tutor Soil pH Test Strips. The impact is typically about .5 of a point for pH, but the drift can be up to 1 point. For most gardeners getting a pH reading within .5 of a point is sufficient. Most municipal tap water has a pH of 6.5 to 8.5, so using tap water will be OK but may cause your reading to be off about .5 of a point. If you want to get the best reading possible from your test strips, it's a good idea to use fresh unopened distilled water. You can check the manufacturing date on the unopened distilled water container, and if it is under 30 days old, it should be about a 7.0 pH. When using distilled water, you can be assured that you will be getting the most accurate soil pH reading possible. One of the main reasons distilled water is used for soil pH testing is that it has a low "buffer capacity" and will not meaningfully impact the actual pH reading of a soil sample. It is important to note that the Garden Tutor Soil pH Test Strips are calibrated for soil testing only, so just dipping the test strips into straight water won't give you an accurate pH reading of the water. If you have additional questions, please let us know. We are glad to help. Angus Junkin Garden Tutor |

User questions & answers
Question: | does your guide include a reading for boston ferns |
Answer: | Yes if the soil has moisture. Might be broken. |
Question: | Do you need to calibrate this thing ever or no |
Answer: | No meter like this is going to give you specificity. If you want that you need to use a PH meter and the pour-through method of testing. You simply water or fertilize your plant then wait one hour and pour distilled water through it until it comes out the bottom and then test that runoff with a PH meter. Even this is only accurate for an hour as the PH is the measure of the hydrogen ion concentration which constantly changes as chemical reactions take place in the soil. Also, no meter like this could ever give a specific reading because the scale is not fine enough. The difference between a PH of 7 and a PH of 6 is ten times more acid not one times as acid. Any meter that does not give specific readings for every tenth reading between the main numbers is not accurate, it is just close, you need a PH meter if you want a specific accurate reading but even that is only good for a short period of time and will change so you might as well go ahead and use the XLUX which gets as close as any of this type of meter. If you need more info you should check with the web sites of agricultural colleges for better information on soil PH. The University of North Carolina has a Monitoring and Managing pH and EC Using the PourThru Extraction Method. I don't have time to look it up it is called the 1, 2, 3’s of PourThru by Brian E. Whipker, Todd J. Cavins, and William C. Fonteno of North Carolina State University |

User questions & answers
Question: | HI, will it work together with Ambient Weather ws-2902c wifi smart weather station |
Answer: | Step 1: Switch to moisture/pH/light position according to which you demand to test Step 2: Insert the probe into the soil about 2-4 inches Step 3: Adjust the position of the probe until the pointer on the dial swing slightly Step 4: Check moisture/pH/light level in the dial after 10 minutes ,now you get the result you need Step 5: Remove probe from soil and wipe clean after each use. |
Question: | Does this really work?I can't see the pH-position works,what happened |
Answer: | I haven't had that happen so not sure what is going wrong with yours. Which of the three parameters are you measuring? You have to be sure you have selected the right setting ie: for moisture -- be sure it is set to the moisture setting. Are you plunging the prongs in to the appropriate depth? Do you wipe the prongs off with a cloth after each plunge? 1. The moisture or pH values are different for different depths of your spot soil. 2. In order to get more accurate readings, the soil meter needs to be inserted into soil 4 inches or deeper(about 2/3 of the probes) Hope you get it working the way it should -- good luck!! |
Question: | How to use this tester |
Answer: | It includes a reading for all plants including my Boston Fern. Just insert the reader in root depth for an accurate reading. In my fern which is large I place it in two or three different places in the pot to insure that it is being watered uniformly. |
Question: | I just recived my meter and it is showing totally different readings when I test the same exact spot. How can I do |
Answer: | No you don’t. It does water as well as ph balance. Works great! |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the range for testing iron |
Answer: | The test range is between 0.0 and 5.0 ppm |
Question: | can this test spring water |
Answer: | Hi, I think you should be able to test your Spring water with it. It's not as accruate as a lab test. We used it to test tthhe water and make sure it was ok for our livestock. |
Question: | What are the indicators/results to suggest the well water is : (1) safe to drink, (2) safe to shower in/wash hands, (3) safe on washing clothes |
Answer: | We followed all the instructions and test indicators with ease of instructions. I don't remember what all the test were but it covered most of what was the most important of chemicals and bacteria. All the test came back safe for 0 nitrates, bacteria harmful to drink, etc. I would feel safe to shower/wash hands and to wash clothes in. We only used it to drink and wash our hands as it was put up at a lake. I would recommend that water not be stored and changed daily as we left the test water alone for 4 days further than it asked for and it did grow organisms as the chlorine is not there to kill them. However, drinking it fresh daily we never became sick and the water was perfect!! I am going to send a sample off to the state level for curiosity but I feel safe drinking what we draw from the well. I hope this helps. |
Question: | How many times can I repeat the test? Is it one time use only |
Answer: | This test kit can only be used once. |

The Water Quality Test Even Government and Water Municipalities Recommend You Use. Regularly.
This isn’t just for peace of mind, this is your physical health and well-being. Time and time again, water systems we have come to trust allow polluted water to flow freely into homes causing disease and chronic health problems. Since children and pets are the most sensitive to contaminants, with sometimes devastating results, this can heighten the need for testing. Testing gives you the power of knowledge, and it costs only 24.95.
Environment
Aging water systems, contaminated runoff that introduces human and animal waste, and industrial chemicals are just three of the actors influencing drinking water quality—and the impact is growing greater every day. Chemical spills, toxic substances, people living more densely; the depth of the problem is yet to be fully realized.
Government
These days, most government officials agree that it’s nearly impossible to completely avoid contaminated drinking water. The biggest questions are which chemicals, and to what degree. The fact that both information and management of these systems are controlled by people in politics is a disturbing factor.
Well Water, Too
Rural areas that receive their water from wells contain some of the most contaminated water sources. Microorganisms and toxic chemicals seep into water supplies. People are advised to use a well water testing kit regularly, as new contaminants invade groundwater with little to no oversight or enforcement.
Pittsburgh Downplays the Threat of Lead-Contaminated Drinking Water.
In 2017, the Water and Sewer Authority in Pittsburgh issued a warning for residents to boil their drinking water first, even for brushing teeth and washing dishes. City officials are accused of misleading residents as to the risk.
Flint Michigan’s Drinking Water Harms Children.
In 2018, when 57 of 86 Detroit public schools tested positive for elevated levels of lead, the government confirmed that children could suffer permanent brain damage, which often results in learning disabilities and violent behavior.
Lead-Contamination in Milwaukee’s Drinking Water Since 2015 Continues.
From 2015 to 2017 the children of families living in Milwaukee were testing positive for elevated levels of lead. Even after the health commissioner resigned for failing to notify the community of the risk, the “serious failure” persists.

User questions & answers
Question: | how long do the test strips last? I'd likely keep them in the garage, with temps from 40-125 F throughout the year. Thx |
Answer: | Hi Denise, You would hold the test strip vertical next to the reading chart. The pH level that matches your soil test strip the closest will be your result. If you have any other questions feel free to reach out to us at support@stripthealth.com. Thanks, Bryan |
Question: | what are the instructions for use |
Answer: | Maybe if you shake the water dirt mix vigorously then let it settle all day so the water is clear at the top you may get better results. |
Question: | How do you read the color chart. There are several rows with all the colors in each row |
Answer: | I doubt it. It just a meter. No batteries or anything. |
Question: | I purchased ph test strips from supportstripthealh and i am not happy with the product when i pull the strip out after three seconds it’s brown no mat |
Answer: | It does work. I am using it. I have also encountered this problem. I studied it for a long time, and later I found out that it was a problem with the soil itself. The general soil pH is close to neutral, so the pointer does not change significantly when tested with this tester. In fact, this shows that the soil you tested is neutral. That is to say not acidic or alkaline. |
