12 best chopping axes

Chopping axes are essential tools commonly used in gardening, lawn care, and various outdoor activities. They are designed for cutting and splitting wood, making them useful for tasks such as chopping firewood, clearing branches, or preparing logs for construction. Here are some key features and uses of chopping axes:

  1. Blade Design: Chopping axes typically have a sharp, wedge-shaped blade that is specifically designed for splitting wood fibers efficiently. The blade's shape allows it to easily penetrate the wood and then force the fibers apart as you strike the wood.

  2. Handle Material: The handle of a chopping axe is usually made from wood or fiberglass. Wooden handles provide a traditional look and feel, while fiberglass handles are more durable and resistant to weather and wear.

  3. Weight and Size: Chopping axes come in various sizes and weights. Smaller axes are suitable for one-handed use and are often called hatchets, while larger axes are used with both hands for more substantial tasks. The weight of the axe should be chosen based on the user's strength and the intended application.

  4. Head Material: The head of a chopping axe is typically made of steel, which provides the necessary strength and durability for cutting and splitting wood. High-quality axes may have a heat-treated or hardened blade for improved performance.

  5. Sharpening: Regular maintenance is crucial to keep the axe blade sharp. You can use a sharpening stone or file to maintain the edge. A sharp blade is more efficient and safer to use.

  6. Safety: When using a chopping axe, it's essential to follow safety guidelines. Always wear appropriate safety gear, such as gloves and safety glasses. Ensure that there is a clear, safe area to swing the axe and be aware of the direction the wood may split.

  7. Applications: Chopping axes are versatile tools and can be used for various tasks, including:

    • Splitting firewood: Chopping axes are excellent for splitting logs into smaller pieces for use in fireplaces, stoves, or campfires.
    • Limbing and pruning: They can be used to remove branches from trees or shrubs.
    • Shaping wood: Chopping axes are sometimes used by carpenters and woodworkers to shape and smooth wood surfaces.
    • Clearing debris: In outdoor cleanup and landscaping, axes are useful for removing roots, bushes, and other obstructions.
  8. Storage: When not in use, store your chopping axe in a dry place and consider using a blade cover or sheath to protect the blade and prevent accidents.

In summary, chopping axes are valuable tools for anyone involved in outdoor activities, gardening, or woodworking. Choosing the right size and type of axe for your needs, maintaining it properly, and using it safely will ensure that it remains a useful and reliable tool for years to come.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the X27 (36" handle) too long for a short (5'2") female
Answer: I am 6 feet 200lbs and the 36 " I have is a tad long. If it is too long for you it will lag behind the line of your arms which can cause you to hit log with the handle and possibly rebound on you. You might find it helpful to find a tool like a spade or bat and swing it with your arms at different lengths to see what is comfortable for you. Although they are likely to be lighter than an axe head. Your strength and weight are key elements in making the decision. You have to be able to get the head around so that it strikes the wood in line with your arms and lands accurately. Choking up on handle can make that alignment harder. Of course the best way is to try one out or a sledge hammer would give you a good answer. This splitting maul is excellent and sharp. The best I have used. I wish I had it when I was heating with wood.
Question: how to replace handle on Fiskars Axe
Answer: Fiskars products are warranted to the consumer purchaser to be free of defects in material and workmanship for as long as the consumer owns the product. Warranty does not cover sharpening, normal wear and tear, environmental factors, accidental damage, misuse, industrial/commercial use. well after a quick look at the warranty i think you may only get a replacement if it was shipped that way if it was wear and tear or anything like that it isnt their responsibility
Question: Brand new axe split a dozen dry logs. Corners of blade already slightly chipped. Never hit rocks or hard objects. Is this normal
Answer: My older Fiskars splitting axe, older than the X-series of Fiskars axes, has never been damaged from use. The blade has not been chipped out anywhere. It has been used almost entirely on 16" billets of oak, which has been reasonably straight-grained and not full of knots, although of course some knots have had to be split through. I cannot imagine how or why chipping of the blade would occur, unless it might be from glancing blows struck at an angle with perhaps a twisting motion of some kind not normal to the typically straight downward splitting blow. it's a head-scratcher.
Question: On a scale of 1-10, how useful is this super splitting axe against a zombie
Answer: With Zombies sometimes recovering from FATAL BLOWS it has always been my practice to follow-up with a GOOD WOOD CHIPPER. AMAZON sells a good 7HP Heavy Duty 212cc Gas Powered 3:1 Multi-Function Pro Wood Chipper Shredder https://www.amazon.com/GreatCircleUSA-Heavy-Duty-212cc-Powered/dp/B075SG6372/ref=sr_1_4?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1538798975&sr=1-4&keywords=wood+chipper This can be very messy but is made easier by cutting section with a chainsaw. I use the STIHL MS 271 FARM BOSS 20" bar.

User questions & answers

Question: What's the difference between the chopping and the splitting axe
Answer: Chopping axe doesn’t have the wide V shape cheek (part of the head) the splitting axe does. Very difficult to make a good chop perpendicularly (cut down tree or cut limb in half) with a splitting axe because of the wide cheek of the head. However, the wide V shape makes splitting wood effortless.
Question: Does this come with a belt clip
Answer: Hello, The LEXIVON V14 Camping Hatchet comes with a protective carrying sheath/hanger for optimal use outdoor. Belt clip is not included. We also added a bonus - XS blade protector to use when space is limited in your backpack. Regards.
Question: Where are Lexivon hatchets/axes made? thanks
Answer: Hi, The LEXIVON LX-V14 Designed & Warranted by LEXIVON US - Manufactured in Taiwan. We carefully monitor manufacturing throughout the entire process to ensure high-quality standards. Regards.
Question: Can the other side of the V14 camping hatchet be used as a hammer for tent stakes
Answer: I've used mine to drive tent stakes and didn't have any problems. Been a great little hatchet for me as I prefer to do things without power tools.

LogOX 3-in-1 Forestry Multitool – The Back-Saving Log Hauler, Cant Hook, and Timberjack (Patented & Made in USA)

LogOX

Based on 768 reviews Check latest price
  • ✓ 21" LogOX HAULER - Quickly engage, lift, and move log rounds or split pieces without continually bending over, swinging a pulp hook, or pickaroon. This mechanical advantage saves your back by reducing back strain up to 93 percent! The ergonomic, EZ-grip horizontal hardwood handle also makes this tool a great short cant hook for rolling logs.
  • ✓ 38” CANT HOOK - A cant handle extension easily attaches to the Hauler for extra leverage. The sharp precision ground hook tip and beveled toe design helps securely grip and roll logs up to 32” in diameter. Tree care work results in a high percentage of back related injuries, but with the LogOX Hauler you can save time, money, and your back.
  • ✓ 38" TIMBERJACK - Quickly lift smaller logs (up to 12" diameter) off the ground. This forms a solid elevated cutting platform, in order to prevent chain damage from ground strikes, bar pinch, and dangerous kickback. T-bar attaches easily using clevis pins, without additional tools.
  • ★ PATENTED - PROUDLY MADE IN USA & GUARANTEED FOR LIFE- We offer a 100% Ironclad Lifetime Warranty against manufacturer's defect. Made from a rugged, hollow frame, American steel construction you can trust.
  • ★ GREAT VALUE - The LogOX’s multifunction design combines normally over $300 worth of the best forestry tools in a woodsman's arsenal into a single compact, portable, 12.0 lb. package. Saving you time, money, and storage space. If you use a chainsaw, log splitter, or portable sawmill, the LogOX is a must have! LogOX accessories like the Hauler Holster, PickOX Pickaroon Attachment, and CarryOX Bag are sold separately, or together as part of the LogOX Forester Package.

User questions & answers

Question: Why dont you sell the pickeroon attachment individually? I bought the 3 in 1 tool already
Answer: They do
Question: What diameter of log can it handle
Answer: For rolling logs, it can handle over 2 ft in diameter. You can watch the Facebook video of Lucas Mill owner rolling a huge log! For lifting, it will handle as much as the lifter can. With logs that are too heavy, we hook it on and drag it.
Question: will this handle 24 in. logs
Answer: For rolling logs, it can handle over 2 ft in diameter. You can watch the Facebook video of Lucas Mill owner rolling a huge log! For lifting, it will handle as much as the lifter can. With logs that are too heavy, we hook it on and drag it.
Question: I’m looking for something to lift larger logs off the ground for cutting, description says its a timber jack for smaller. Can it lift 24” log for cut
Answer: John, For logs much larger then 12-14" we recommend using the LogOX as a full cant hook. After the tree has been de-limbed, mark out your desired log round lengths into the bark with your chainsaw along the entire length of the log (we use our chainsaw bar length for reference). Then make all of your initial cuts 3/4 of the way through the log. Once that is complete, utilize the LogOX as a cant hook to roll the entire log over and simply finish the back side of your cuts. Similar to using a timberjack, this method will help keep your chain from accidentally striking the ground and you'll find it to be a lot easier than trying to lift up a tree that size.

  • Ideal for splitting medium- to large-sized logs
  • Designed for maximum efficiency to give you more one-strike splits
  • Perfected balance and power-to-weight ratio increases swing speed to multiply power, much like an aluminum baseball bat
  • Shock-absorbing FiberComp handle is lightweight yet stronger than steel to prevent overstrike damage
  • Lifetime warranty

User questions & answers

Question: Is the length of 28 inches inclusive of the head or just the handle
Answer: Yes axe lengths are measured from top of the head to bottom of the handle.
Question: I am 5'2" would the Fiskars 28" be a better choice for me than the 36" ? I want to split firewood into smaller pieces for my fire pit
Answer: That seems like it would be the better choice. I'm not sure if there's a weight difference between the 25 and the 27 but seems in your case the 25 would be better suited for you.
Question:
Answer: I purchased the Fiskars with the 36 inch handle for my son as a gift he is 5'9" and he really likes the longer handle. It really does split wood like they claim. I read a lot of reviews and from a 67 year woman to a 5'6" guy and every review that I read prefered the longer handle. There were people that purchased the 28" and liked it until they got the 36". I would watch the video as well as read the tons of reviews that are out there. The only draw back is now Fiskars is starting to have them made in China,to me that can only mean a lack of quality. When I made my purchase I made sure that the one I purchased came from Finland, that is where they were originally made. When I received it I could not believe how sharp this thing was and how light. It really has an awesome balance. But all and all I really think you would be really pleased with the longer handle.
Question: I am 5'6", which handle length would be best for my height, the 36" on the X27, or the 28" on the X
Answer: Probably the 28", but to be safe you can always get the 36" and choke up on it. Do you use a chopping block or split on the ground? If you always use a block, the 28" will probably work.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the distance from the center of the cutting edge to widest point of the flared cheeks
Answer: Cutting edge to widest point of wedge measured 4.75 inches and wedge measures 2.75 inches at widest point Best wedge I ever used!
Question: How does it compare to the popular fiskar x
Answer: It's a different altogether. I own both and the maul is a heavy beast! I like that that 8 lb maul's Iso Core handle absorbs vibration much better than the X27mif the wood you are trying to split is tough like twisted elm and you need repeated strikes. The X27 is a shorter and it is a much lighter axe(not a maul) to swing making it great for splitting straight grained wood. The 8 lb maul is great for splitting large rounds it is my favorite maul for heavy splitting.
Question: Is this a good axe to fell medium to larger diameter trees
Answer: It is NOT an axe but a wood splitting maul( blockbuster in Aussie speech). To fell a tree you would be much better off with a chainsaw. A purpose built felling axe such as a Plumb, Kelly, Gilpin, Gransfors is the alternative but you would need to be very skilled and fit to use one No doubt Fiskars would manufacture good felling axes but the Iso Core is not suitable for felling.
Question: Mine broke while splitting oak. the links to fiskars' "warranty contact" and the "general contact" don't work. how can i get warranty help
Answer: I contacted Fiskars via phone and uploaded photos of the damaged blade. They sent a new one out right away! Start your claim here: http://www2.fiskars.com/Customer-Service/Warranty-Claim-Form

Product features

Helko Werk Classic Forester

The Forester is a highly capable, full-size general purpose axe. Its 3 ½ pound head provides enough heft and power for most cutting and felling work. It is big enough to take down medium and large trees without over-encumbering the average user. If you are looking for a full-size axe but aren’t able to comfortably wield the larger Expedition, the Forester is a solid choice and perfect for the farm, home, or cabin.

Forging

Helko axe heads are individually forged by hand using a drop hammer on open dies. The blacksmith does this work on a drop forge, using tongs to hold and shape the hot steel as a hammer falls repeatedly onto it. The drop hammer runs continuously at remarkable speed, requiring a highly skilled and time-tested smith. The hand-eye coordination and judgment required for this process can only come from years of experience, as every split-second decision ultimately affects the shape and integrity of the final product. Once satisfied with his work, the Smith hammers the Helko Werk crown logo into the cheek. Only minimal supplementary work is performed, allowing each blade to proudly display its forging marks and ensuring that no two pieces are exactly alike. All Helko tools are manufactured in Germany from premium, C50 high grade carbon steel.

Rockwell Hardness

Rockwell hardness is an important factor to consider when evaluating the quality of an axe head. The steel must be tempered just right, without being too soft to hold an edge or hard enough to become brittle. A soft bit will lose its edge quickly, requiring constant sharpening and honing. Conversely, over-hardened bits are liable to chip during normal use. Helko's Master Smiths have cumulatively spent hundreds of years perfecting the hardness and temper of our axes, creating an ideal balance between superior edge holding ability, ease of sharpening, and resistance to chipping. After forging, the heads are hardened and cooled in a continuously running 70°C oil bath. They are then heated to 180-200°C to relieve strain on the surface of the steel and achieve the desired level of hardness. Helko axe and hatchet edges are hardened to approximately 53-56 HRC (Rockwell) up to 30 millimeters from the cutting edge, while the eye is generally left unhardened to prevent cracks in the steel.

Handle Making

The quality of the handle is a significant measure of the tool’s integrity. Helko proudly equips their axes with some of the finest woods available. Our hickory handles are crafted from sustainably sourced Grade A American hickory. Helko promotes environmentally sound, socially beneficial, and economically prosperous management of the world's forests. Our hickory wood is softly air dried over periods of approximately 9 months in order to bring the wood's moisture content down the the proper level. American hickory, growing between 60 and 120 feet high, is a hardwood that maintains remarkable bending properties and flexibility. Hickory is known for its shock absorbing and resistance capabilities. It has a coarse texture and a straight grain, and is highly receptive to oils and finishes. Hickory’s sapwood, or outer layer, is primarily white with shades of brown, while the heartwood is a pale reddish brown.

Leather Sheaths

Our Leather sheaths are made from vegetable tanned, full grain, cowhide leather. The sheaths are made with a heavy duty welt, which is an added strip of leather that rests against the blade, for maximum blade protection. The buckle fasteners are nickel plated with an adjustable strap that will always ensure a tight and snug fit, regardless if the leather stretching over time.

User questions & answers

Question: Steel type
Answer: Did some digging for you. Best info I could find is: It's made from Forged carbon steel, HRC 50-56. Hope that helps.
Question: how do you sharpen it
Answer: Use a 4" grinder with a very fine flap wheel, and sharpen the blade WITH the slope of the head - not against. Use a diamond hone to finish it.
Question: On the description it says country of origin:China. On the website: Made in Finland. What's the deal
Answer: That's what I'm trying to figure out too. The fiskars website no longer says made in Finland. Just designed in Finland. And "Made in Finland" doesn't seem to be molded into the top of the handle on the axe head anymore. My 9 inch Gerber only says "Finland" on the head but it does say "Made in Finland" on the card it came attached to. I paid extra for that Gerber because I was able to ascertain that it really was made in Finland. I'm not have as much luck with this 14 inch. Too bad they don't include images of the card stock, box, whatever so a person can know beforehand. Usually I assume that when Country of Origin is not included it's because they're not very proud of what they've did. So I assume it's likely manufactured in China. I have some Svea 123 backpacking stoves. The old ones are stamped "Made in Sweden" and they really are. The new ones are simply stamped "Sweden" which isn't really a lie since the company is based there. You'd be surprised how many people see "Sweden" stamped on the stove base and take it to mean it was made in Sweden. My fear is that is what's happening here. People see "Finland" stamped on the axe head and read "Made in Finland" into it. Then again, maybe Fiskars doesn't play that game? BTW, I'm not saying it's not a good hatchet if it's made in China. But I suspect the odds go down unless Fiskars has a heavy presence at the factory, to insure quality control.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the material & hardness of the axe head
Answer: It is 3Cr13 Stainless steel. It is a Chinese made steel that has 3 percent carbon and 13 percent carbon making it a true stainless. It is equivalent to 420J2 or AUS4 steels. It has a Rockwell hardness of around 53-55 depending on how well it is heat treated. It has a good combination of toughness, stain resistance while being easily shapenable. For a hand axe, it allows the steel to take blows from wooden objects very well and still maintain its sharpness relatively well. Overall it is a good steel for the Schrade axe if a stainless is preferable due to its ability to resist the elements. It is also well made with a good handle material for both grip and shock resistance. I believe you will be happy if these qualities meet your need.
Question: Where are they made
Answer: I am not sure where they are produced, but I really, REALLY like mine, a LOT !!!It is a great little hatchet, does smaller jobs very well - exactly what it's designed for.
Question: Does it come with any type of case or sheath
Answer: Yes, the axe comes with a sheath. However, the quality is such that I wouldn’t rely on it for durability or attachment to a pack, belt etc. It’s connected by a single button. So buying a more quality sheath might be the better option. The blade itself seems decent enough though.
Question: Does it come with a cover for axe head
Answer: Yes! It comes with a plastic head cover (which most axes this size didn’t offer) and it has a belt loop to keep it on your hip.
