how often do you change the filter

Answer:

Filters can be used up to six months under a normal condition (ie. no food sticking to the inside of the lid. However if experiencing moldy filters please replace them. It is best to keep filters dry by not having the surface to contact sticky materials where possible. The first 2 filters installed inside the lid. How to avoid stainless steel rust

1. If the stainless steel surface contains dust of other metal elements or attachment of dissimilar metal particles. In humid air, the condensed water between the attached material and the stainless steel connects the two into a micro battery, triggering an electrochemical reaction. The protective film is destroyed, which is called electrochemical corrosion.

2. The surface of the stainless steel adheres to the organic juice (such as melon, noodle soup, etc.), which will constitute an organic acid in the presence of water and oxygen, and the organic acid will corrode the metal surface.

3. The surface of the stainless steel adheres to acid, alkali, and salt substances (such as splash of alkaline water and lime water), will cause local corrosion.

4. In polluted air (such as the atmosphere containing a large amount of sulfide, carbon oxide, nitrogen oxide), sulfuric acid, nitric acid, acetic acid liquid spots will form in the condensed water, causing chemical corrosion.

5. Please take care to avoid the damp environment and avoid washing with steel balls and bleaching agents or abrasives.

All of these can cause the stainless steel surface protection film to corrode, then causing rust. Therefore, in order to ensure that the metal surface is bright and not rusted, we recommend:

1. Rinse with neutral cleaner. Dry them after washing.

Answer:	The white filter stays in place. This goes over it and replaces the one it comes with that is also black, but this one is thicker than the black one that comes with it.

Answer:	NO. You cannot wash any activated carbon product. Once the carbon adsorbs the pollutants, they can't be "washed off." You can only wash off dust but this is a totally different filter. You are not filtering only dust. If you want to only filter dust, you should get a non-carbon dust filter. THAT you can wash and reuse.

If used under the proper conditions, when indoor compost is emptied into an outdoor composting bin or tumbler in due time, expect these filters to last longer - we advise you replace them at intervals that suit you and, most importantly, your nose best!

Ease of install...

First, simply pinch and pull out the old filters. Second, our square shaped compost filter is replaced by pushing the center of the filter into the lid with a finger and then tucking each of its corners in, allowing the filter to sit flush against the inner curvature of the lid's dome. Last, our circular shaped filter fits into the notch at the bottom of the lid - it's best to insert it bit-by-bit while rotating the lid in yours hands. It takes just a matter of moments to have your compost pot smells trapped and under control!

Worry-free...

It's normal for a bit of the odor absorbing activated carbon to flake off during installation and for you to have to bend and wrinkle the filters slightly to install them - you won't hurt them and they will absorb odors just the same!

Also, if your filter replacement kit bag comes with a couple of holes punched in it (done for shipping purposes,) just place a small piece of tape across each hole to trap out outside air so that your replacement filters don't get oxygenated before you need them!

And, if your composting pail lid is a different size, no problem - trim our 6.5-inch filters for smaller 4, 5, 5.5, and 6 inch lids or use loosely-installed in 7, 7.25, and 8 inch lids. Trim for DIY projects also.

Answer:	As a general rule, activated charcoal can safely be incorporated into compost as the filter material and the carbon infused within are indeed both organic and will eventually break down. As an added bonus, used filters have the potential of continuing to neutralize unpleasant odors in your compost heap as they break down.
Question:	Why do I need two shapes? Double protection? If yes, which one goes closer to the waste
Answer:	My container requires 2 filters the square one inserts to the top of the lid where the air holes are located and the square one fits inside the base of lid. May need to cut to fit. I use the old filters as a size guide. Easy to cut with scissors

Question:	What do you do when the week is up? I mean, I know you take the compost out, but where does it go
Answer:	Compost is very beneficial in your garden or flower beds. I have a larger outdoor compost box that I keep adding to year-round and I incorporate the compost into my garden in the spring.
Question:	Is anyone having trouble keeping the filter to stay in the lid? This worked for awhile, but it is annoying to have it continue to fall in the compost
Answer:	Yes this is somewhat typical. Just buy some new filter material and cut it to size so your new filter disks fit snugly into the lid. I’ve also seen people simply put a piece of wax paper over the top of the container and pushing the lid tight down over the wax paper. In a perfect world you would not need to do this.
Question:	Does this bin draw fruit flies through the vents at the top
Answer:	I have not had any issue with fruit flies. I've been using this bin for three months.
