11 best solar powered electric fence for garden
A solar-powered electric fence for garden, commonly used in agricultural fencing, farm ranches, and gardens, utilizes solar energy to power an electric fence system. This type of fencing serves several purposes, including deterring animals and pests from entering or damaging the garden area, protecting livestock, and maintaining security around the property. Here are some key points about solar-powered electric fences for gardens:
Solar Power Source: The primary feature of these electric fences is their reliance on solar panels to generate electricity. A solar panel is typically mounted on top of a fence post or nearby structure to capture sunlight and convert it into electrical energy.
Energy Storage: Solar-powered electric fences are equipped with rechargeable batteries to store excess energy generated during the day. This energy is then used to power the fence at night or during periods when sunlight is insufficient.
Electric Shock: The fence system delivers a non-lethal, low-voltage electric shock to any animal or intruder that comes into contact with it. This shock is uncomfortable but not harmful, designed to act as a deterrent rather than cause harm.
Installation: Setting up a solar-powered electric fence typically involves installing fence posts, insulators, and wires. The solar panel is connected to a controller unit that manages the energy flow to the fence. Many systems come with detailed installation instructions.
Maintenance: Solar-powered electric fences require minimal maintenance. Regularly checking the condition of the wires and ensuring that the solar panel remains clean and unobstructed by debris is essential to keep the system functioning optimally.
Versatility: These fences can be used for various purposes, such as keeping out deer, rabbits, raccoons, and other garden pests. They can also be used to contain or protect livestock like chickens, goats, or horses.
Customization: Some solar-powered electric fence systems offer customizable settings for adjusting the intensity of the electric shock, allowing users to control the level of deterrence.
Cost-Efficiency: Solar-powered systems are cost-effective in the long run since they reduce electricity costs and are environmentally friendly. They are particularly beneficial in remote or off-grid locations where access to traditional power sources may be limited.
Legal Considerations: Depending on your location, there may be regulations governing the use of electric fences. It's essential to check local laws and ensure that your fence complies with them.
Safety: Proper signage and warning indicators should be placed near the fence to alert people to its presence, reducing the risk of accidental contact.
In summary, a solar-powered electric fence for a garden or agricultural area is an eco-friendly and effective solution for protecting crops and livestock while minimizing energy costs. It's a versatile option that can be customized to suit your specific needs and is relatively low-maintenance once installed.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the panel require a day of sunlight in order to hold a charge |
Answer: | I never got mine to work, so I called the manufacturer and they told me that they knew there was a lot of problems with this model and the seller was less than helpful. I would buy another one. I tried charging for 3 days too. |
Question: | Can you use this charger on a tape fence |
Answer: | Yes, this energizer will work with tape fence. |
Question: | Will this fence work with poly rope?does this work with poly rope |
Answer: | Yes, that is what I'm using. The poly rope has wire woven in the rope itself along with the poly. |
Question: | Can I connect a wire from this to my actual fence to make the whole fence shockable if touched? I need my huskies not to ruin my fence & the wild out |
Answer: | I believe the answer to be NO - the reason being that your fence is most likely grounded in which case hooking the charger to the fence would cause the charger to short out. Should your fence be built with wooden posts, then using standoff insulators you can install wires at whatever height you need and then hook the charger to them. I hope this helps. |

Zareba Battery-Powered Garden Protection Kit
The Zareba Garden Protection Kit comes with all you need to quickly and easily install your electric fence! Use the 250 ft spool of 17-gauge aluminum wire and string it through the clips in the 30-in poly fence posts. Connect the battery-powered 5-Mile fence charger to the 6 or 12-volt battery (not included) and insert the ground rod into the earth. Attach the ground rod clamp to the rod, and connect the ground rod to the charger with wire. This garden protection kit is a customizable setup, ideal for protecting areas around the home.
Battery Power for Remote Areas
No plug? No problem! You can set up this Garden Protection Kit in areas far away from electrical outlets thanks to its battery-powered design. The kit includes a 5-Mile DC powered charger that runs off of a 6volt deep cycle, marine battery. Check the battery every month to ensure it still has ample charge to power the fence. While the kit only provides 250 ft of wire, you can expand your fence with additional posts and wire up to 5 linear miles.
Keep Nuisance Animals Out
Create a perimeter with this kit to keep animals out of flower beds, vegetable gardens, and areas of the lawn. Ideal for small nuisance animals like rabbits, cats, dogs, raccoons, squirrels, and groundhogs, this fence will send a mild shock. The shock is gentle but provides enough jolt to scare them away and condition those animals to the boundary you set.
5-Mile DC Fence Charger
This energizer powers up to 5 miles of electric fencing. Keep the charger out of the elements in weather-proof housing. Use the fence tester to test voltage on the charger and on the fence line.
250 ft Aluminum Wire and Warning Signs
Use the 250 ft of rust-resistant aluminum wire for the perimeter of your fence. Hang the attached warning sign onto the fence line to let friends and family be advised you have a live fence.
10 Garden Green Fence Posts
This kit includes 10 green fence posts, each has 8 built-in clips in which the wire can string through. Depending on which animals you wish to deter, will help you decide where the wire should be placed on the posts.
Ground Rod and Clamp
To provide power to the fence, it must be grounded. This ground rod will insert into the ground leaving a few inches above for the grounding clamp. Slide the clamp over the rod, add a piece of wire, then tighten the clamp.
Product description
The Patriot PE2 electric fence energizer is a 110-volt AC plug in 0.10 Joule model. Low impedance energizer designed to deliver power to the end of the fence, even under heavy load (foliage, undergrowth). Has a LED indicator that pulses when energizer is working. Easy installation. Distance range: 2 miles Distance range: 8 acres Peak Output Energy: Up to 0.1J Peak Stored Energy: Up to 0.16J Combine the PE2 with a 250ft spool of Patriot Made n the U.S.A. 17 gauge aluminum wire and you've got the ideal solution for containing pets and keeping out small nuisance animals. Make sure your electric fence charger meets the requirements of your electric fence, refer to your Patriot installation manual for guidance. This will vary depending on the type of fence, the number of fence wires, how much vegetation is growing around the fence and the climate. Remember, if you extend the length of the fence by adding to the fence or subdividing it with temporary fences, you need to make sure your charger is powerful enough. If you use a more powerful charger, make sure you increase the number of ground rods in the ground system. Avoid using different metals in your electric fence. In damp conditions, when an electric current passes through the differing metals, electrolysis will occur. For example, using stainless steel ground rods and an aluminum leadout wire will cause problems. In a short space of time, the aluminium will disintegrate. If possible, keep the wire joints above the soil to improve airflow and reduce electrolysis. Seal the wire joints with thick paint, epoxy or tar to keep moisture away from the joint area. Use identical metals in your electric fence will avoid problems with electrolysis altogether.
- Set includes 1 Patriot Electric Fence Charger plus 1 250ft spool of Patriot Made in the USA 17 Gauge aluminum wire and Quick Tip Guide. Does NOT include a ground rod. Only effective for small nuisance animals.
- PE2 Output Voltage: Up to 5 kV max, 2.8 kV @ 500 ohms;Patriot Wire tensile strength 38,000 PSI; Fi-Shock Breaking load: 90 lbs; Fi-Shock aluminum wire Will not rust; Will Keep Dogs from Digging Out of Their Pen; Keep Rabbits and Deer Out of Your Garden; For Use as an Electric Dog Fence
- If you test the wire to see if it will shock you, don't be standing in boots that insulate you from the ground. It will not work then! The ground system should be at least 33' (10 m) away from electric or telephone ground systems to avoid interference.
- Moist soil conducts electricity much better than dry soil. If possible, locate the ground system in a boggy area. In dry weather, wet the area around the ground system to keep the soil moist.
- Make sure there are a sufficient number of ground rods. See your charger’s user manual for recommendations. If in doubt, use at least three ground rods. Use more ground rods if your soil conditions are not ideal. Ground rods should be at least 6'6" (2 m) long. One long ground rod works better than several short ground rods.
User questions & answers
Question: | I just need to cover the back of my yard. The dog only digs under the fence in the very back of my property. Will this work for me |
Answer: | The dog needs to cross the circuit in order to shock. The ground stake is one side and a hot wire above the ground where he digs is the other side. While standing on the ground, if he touches the hot wire, he's zapped. It can be done. |
Question: | I know this comes with 250’ is 17 gauge wire but if I need to can I add more to travel the intire circumfrance of my yard |
Answer: | yes you can add more wire. I think that the range of that transmitter is about a quarter mile. |
Question: | Is this waterproof? I cannot mount it inside my home |
Answer: | They are sturdy but not waterproof; most manufacturers recommend installing under shelter but you can make your own cover out of a milk jug or plastic container to fit over the top, just cut out holes for the wires and cord or plug to come through. You will have to replace occasionally as they break down but for a small price (or nothing if you recycle a container) you will extend the life of your charger. |
Question: | I want to add this to a 6-foot chain-link fence is that possible |
Answer: | Yes it is and there are insulators to attach the wire specifically made for chain link fences. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Could this be used to keep raccoons out of garden areas |
Answer: | When hooked to a charger it could. It would need to be put close to the ground and then couple of more strands up about 4 inches apart |
Question: | What’s the wire gauge |
Answer: | Not sure what gauge but very poor quality , kept breaking and did not give the animals a jolt at all go with the aluminum wire really great |
Question: | Is this all i need to have an electric fence? Would i need to buy anything else |
Answer: | Yes. You still need to insulate it from whatever kind of fence posts you are using, have a way to attach to your charger, and a way to ground it. |
Question: | How many bags will i need for a 250 ft fence |
Answer: | Depends on how many strands you’re going to run. M=Meters. 1 Meter=3.37 Feet so a 200m roll would be 674ft (200x3.37=674). Divided by the number of strands you intend to run. For a 250’ fence you’ll need 750’ for three strands 1000’ for four strands etc... |

With 0.15 output joules, this energizer will support animals and livestock such as cattle, horses, bulls, and goats. If using poly products, you should expect about half of the power from the energizer. The more material along the fence line, the harder the energizer must work to pass voltage through the line. A well-kept fence line will provide optimal voltage from the energizer along the fence. To prepare the 10 Mile Solar Charger for first use, place it in full sun for 3 days in the off position. After this time has passed, the unit is ready to use and install. Set the charger's built-in mounting bracket onto a T-post, Y-post, or round-wood post. The durable case will protect the energizer through various weather conditions. Built in the USA, it is tested with a full load at our manufacturing facility and comes with a 1-Year Limited Warranty including damage from lightning.

Question: | I’m not understanding the “grounding” thing. what can i use to ground? how do i ground it? and what is “insulated” wire? this would be my 1st elec fnc |
Answer: | These are excellent questions! We recommend copper, galvanized steel, or even rebar for grounding rods. They should be approximately 6 foot in length. Please reach out to us directly at 1-855-5-ZAREBA (1-855-592-7322) for additional assistance. |
Question: | Is this strong enough for bears |
Answer: | I've personally seen two different bears at different time get their noses zapped! Let me tell you , they won't touch it again. I keep a 150x200 foot pen . 5 foot high chicken wire . Zareba wires ever 6 inches up . It's use to protect my apple trees , bee hives , chickens , and their feed safe . I'm on my second one in 10 years .(lighting got the first one) never lost a bird period! I've touched it myself, and man does it hurt . (Watch out !). I would recommend using sticky trap around what ever pole you mount it to. Cause ants are attracted to it's electric impulse. I've found them inside the unit . Thought it wasn't good so evicted them. It works |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this a pulsed shock or constant shock? Thanks |
Answer: | Pulsed...though I am not an authority...I believe intermittent chargers are the only chargers now sold. And, you'll find this particular charger as being quite shocking! |
Question: | Is it effective on bears |
Answer: | Yes. I needed to keep a 600 lb. bear out of my fruit orchards and vineyards. I used 2 strands of aluminum wire, one hot, one ground. Marked the hot wire between each post with a small piece of red caution tape tied on as inducement to "nose it". Bears are curious. Worked great, and worked immediately. Before, I had massive destruction of both trees and fences every summer and fall, after installation, no disturbance at all. Used one 6' ground rod, with insulators holding the wire out from a T-post and 6' turkey wire fence with top rail so deer won't jump it. Effective for deer, bear, any animal because once they touch the wire, they learn real quick to leave it alone. The steel turkey wire plus steel T-posts also act as additional ground. If they put a paw on the fence, and touch the hot, zap! |
Question: | does the battery come with it |
Answer: | Yes, the battery does come with it. However after I received mine it worked for a couple of days and quit. The manufacture is providing warranty work after I pay the expense of shipping. |
Question: | I just ordered this charger but I plan on using HorseGuard tape fencing... I just read a review that said the charger does not work well with tape |
Answer: | We have never used it with tape, but one thing we found that REALLY helps with the connection between the box and the fencing is good copper wire. It helps transmit a very hot shock. It might be worth a try with the tape before returning the box! |
