Answer:	In my opinion, I think of it as a metal tip. The needle tip to me is like a safety pin end, which I am not a fan. Hope this helps.

Answer:	I have not owned the capped models but I absolutely love these pens. I have had for a while and they are still working. I got them at a great price and plan on buying more when I can catch them on sale.
