How Does Equalization Work?

How Does it Work?

Imagine the frequency range of the sound you hear as a highway, a very wide one with nine lanes. Each of these "lanes" represents a single octave of the sonic spectrum. The first four lanes, labeled 63 - 500 (Hz) contain the really low frequency sound content, mainly bass, bass vocals, and the kick and tom drums. The three lanes labeled 1 k, 2 k and 4 k (Hz), make up the fundamental zone of most musical instruments and the male and female vocals. 8 k and 16 k cover the frequency range of cymbals, snare drums and higher pitched percussion instruments. The FBQ800 allows you to control the flow of audio traffic in each of these nine lanes. When properly applied, EQ makes it possible to hear all of these frequency ranges equally, thus the term equalization.

Feedback Elimination

When a specific frequency, or range of frequencies, reaches too high a level, feedback occurs--that all-too-familiar squeal or howl you get when the mic is too close to the speaker. Basically, feedback happens when there is so much of a particular frequency that it is picked up by the mic and run through the system again. That's why feedback typically gets louder and louder the longer it's allowed to occur. Needless to say, this kind of feedback is very undesirable.

This is where the FBQ800's Feedback Detection System really works its magic. In this ingenious circuitry, LEDs on the individual faders light up when that frequency band is approaching the danger zone. All you need do is lower the illuminated slider until the LED blinks out--voilá, feedback problem solved! What once required a highly trained ear is now an activity that even a child can master.

Sonic Toolkit

That really is the best way to describe the FBQ800. With its nine frequency bands, you easily fine-tune your sound and instantly eliminate feedback. And each fader can be used to boost or cut the frequency range it controls by as much as 12 dB (and that's a lot!).

Special attention is paid to the low frequency zone. In addition to low frequency faders, the FBQ800 features a Low Cut filter for removing unwanted low frequencies such as fl oor rumble, room resonance, electrical hum, etc. This is especially handy if your system is being used for speech rather than music.

To Boost or to Cut, That is the Question

Raising and lowering specific frequency bands can improve the frequency response of any room's acoustics. For instance, if the room you're in is "bass-heavy," lowering the 63 and 125 Hz faders can help eliminate an overall "boomy" or "muddy" sound. Likewise, gently boosting the 8 and 16 k sliders can add sparkle to a somewhat "dark" mix. Are the vocals getting lost in the mix? Raising the level of the 1 k slider can help bring them out.

It's important to note that raising a single fader level is not always the best solution; it's often better to lower the bands surrounding the frequency you want to bring out, and then boost the overall volume level to achieve better headroom.

Answer: First, this is not a player. This is a tone control with instead of just the normal bass, treble and high, divides it into 31 (from 20HZ to 20KHZ). Also, this model is mono (1 channel). You can get 2 of these or get the stereo model. You still need an amplifier and a player. You hook this up between a like a CD player and your amp.

Answer: I’m not a fan of effects built-in to the amp (except maybe reverb). I have all of the 200 series pedals going into a clean amp. They sound amazing but, beware, the learning curve is steep.

Answer: Pretty sure it’s designed for guitar, bass, even keyboards; BUT, assuming that you properly match up XLR/1/4” & mic/line level adjustments, I don’t see why not? I’d be willing to give it a try to see how it sounds. In fact, as an old user of the Boss GE-10 mono EQs - that I’ve tried on a mic before - I’d give it a go. I have 2 old GE-10’s that I use for different purposes in the studio; and now own 2 new EQ-200’s that I use for bass, guitar, and keyboards. You might like it differently, studio vs. live, but I’d say listen & see.

Answer: LOL! Yes, total overkill. Like an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. But why not? You could really shape the tone of your guitar. You could save a few bucks by getting a single unit vs the duplex unit. It's a good Eq and has some very useful extra features in it. My band uses a duplex unit for our monitors. Works great.

Answer: I route it after the board to the powered main speakers or to a power amp. you would have to use an effect loop any other way.I works well sliders are small so they are touchy on the fly but if you are sitting doing sound no issue.

Maybe you've heard the old maxim, "Make a sine-wave to get really good sound," or "Make a smiley-face, that always works." Sadly, this qualifies as advice from the uninformed. Just as every room is unique, so is every musical instrument. Even guitars made by the same manufacturer, using the same materials, on the same day can vary a great deal.People provide a good example of this principal-although we are all similar, we don't all wear the same size shoes, or even have the same color eyes. There is no one "perfect" equalization curve that fits every scenario; equalization is dynamic.Most acoustic and electric guitar energy lies between 100 Hz and 6.4 kHz. Answer: Try both. I would run it in front first and then try it after your RP360 with the settings you use. Let your ear tell you what you prefer. This pedal has more than one use so it's a hard question to answer correctly or incorrectly.
Question: has anyone ever used this little device to boost up bass/treble for voice
Answer: If the microphone that is being considered is the dynamic type, then it can be used in this experiment and it’ll boil down to the summed frequency boost & cut subjectively being what the individual is looking for. If the microphone being considered here is the Condenser type, it is best to pass as this kind requires a phantom power source that’s usually +48v and if the reader already knows how to make the condenser microphone work here, then it’s likely that the reader has a degree in electrical engineering and can just stop reading and proceed as they already know, or should know, what I’m going to explain, lol. Now, there is one major caveat that the user will have to deal with before pursuing the experiment. Both the signal level from the microphone, aka mic, and the impedance (unless the microphone being used is high impedance to begin with...high impedance mics use a cable that has a 1/4” male plug on the end that plugs into the mixer or an amplifier of some sort-unfortunately most mics are low impedance) will have to match the usual and customary level and impedance of what is fed into the pedal, e.g., a guitar. lol. The impedance match is the most important of the considerations and a direct box (or simply DI box) converts a hi-z or high impedance signal to lo-z or low impedance signal. Most will function in the reverse if one needs to convert lo-z to hi-z. As far as matching the level of the signal, that kind of depends on the microphone. Also, the graphic eq pedal that’s the heart of this matter has the ability to globally boost or cut the signal level. Most likely that’s only applied as the signal is outgoing. The signal has to have adequate but not excessive gain (the level I mentioned earlier) and in most cases, a dynamic mic signal won’t have adequate gain, so the outgoing signal, while boosted by the pedal, will be on the noisy side because of the lack of what is called headroom. If one has access to the kind of headphone amp common to both pro and quality home studios, plug the mic first into the output of the DI, then plug a cable running from the DI’s input side into the input of the headphone amp and the last cable into the eq pedal. The output of the eq pedal cab now be run to the mixer. Look for either a mixer channel identified as Hi-Z or a channel with a switch (usually a push button toggle but can be a slide or rocker) and plug the out from the pedal to this mixer Hi-Z input. Now follow Good Sound System Operation Practices (including making sure all the eq sliders are parked at the zero before powering by up the system) and see what you can cook up.

Answer: Sure. Set the equalizer like a wave. That is, the bass end nearest to the "Out" input should be above the 0-marking, then create a wave-type response, but my experience on the high end is only raise it one notch above zero. Then, you should be fine. This eq is excellent for acoustics and electrics, and your arch top will sound very nice. Dial the Rampart about half way up and enjoy. Should sound great! James
Question: Will this pedal help remove the muddiness of a cheap distortion pedal
Answer: Yes, it will remove the muddiness. Just notch out the midrange. This pedal does an EXCELLENT job with the traditional "smiley face" eq (boosted bass and treble). I removed the metal plate underneath it to lessen the weight, and use it in my pedal board. I've tried other eq's and this one is one of the best, especially considering the price.

In normal operation, the fader LEDs indicate frequency ranges with the highest energy levels, therefore replacing a separate audio analyzer. Question: How many Microphones can it connect at the same time
Answer: As many as your mixer will allow. How it is setup is you will run an aux send channel to the effects mixer and then back to the stereo channel. Question: how do you hook it up using a cd player and a dac
Answer: Thanks for the question- For a cd player, (or any accessory- dvd player, cable tv or a dish) your "audio OUT" plugs (one red, one white) get connected to the "audio IN" plugs on the equalizer. Then the Audio OUT from the equalizer gets connected to audio IN on your amplifier. Just remember Out from one component goes to IN on the next one. For the sound quality- set the amp bass and treble to neutral (midpoint) and adjust the equalizer to compensate for the speakers, the room and your preferences. For variation in the quality of source recordings- I sometimes adjust the sound using bass and treble on my amp. BTW to hook up an iPod etc- get a cable with the headphone jack (male pin) for the iPod and the red and white (RCA) male connections. The music goes OUT from the iPod and IN to either the equalizer or an AUX IN connection on your amp. OUT from one device and IN to the next.

Answer: The rack ears/brackets are fixed and designed for standard 19 inch racks. They are not removable.

Answer: Hi Steve. I looked up the Onkyo 737 so I could answer your question intelligently. I need to know how you want to use the EQ before I an give you a good answer. You could use the Zone 2 output to feed the EQ input and then connect the EQ output to another source input, say if you own a tape deck and you want to equalize the response, but I do not see the traditional "tape loop" that would enable you to equalize the front two channels irregardless of which source you pick. So the simple answer is no you can't use it effectively. Sorry.

Answer: RCA is unbalanced, meaning its susceptible to noise problems. XLR (and 1/4 trs - not 1/4 tr) are balanced, and more immune to noise problems picked up in interconnecting audio equipment. Balanced connections use shielded, twisted-pair cable and three-conductor connectors (like XLR or TRS connectors). This noise cancellation is called “Common Mode Rejection.” It's also good for long cable runs. And so XLR and TRS cables are used to transmit balanced audio from one balanced device to another. In an audio rack you might be tempted to use an inexpensive cable like RCA because the cable runs are short. That's your choice, but the professionals use XLR cables for the cleanest sound they can engineer.
