14 best guitar preamps
Guitar Preamps:
Purpose: A guitar preamp, short for "preamplifier," is an essential component in the signal chain of an electric or acoustic-electric guitar. Its primary function is to amplify the weak signal generated by the guitar's pickups to a level suitable for further processing or amplification.
Types of Guitar Preamps:
- Built-In Preamps: Many acoustic-electric guitars come with built-in preamps and onboard controls. These preamps often include volume, tone, and sometimes EQ adjustments. They are convenient for direct amplification and live performances.
- External Preamps: External or outboard preamps can be used with both acoustic and electric guitars. They offer greater control over the guitar's tone and can be connected to amplifiers, mixing consoles, or recording equipment.
Tone Shaping: Guitar preamps often feature EQ controls (bass, midrange, treble) that allow players to adjust the tonal characteristics of their guitar's sound. This can help in tailoring the tone to suit different musical styles and preferences.
Gain Control: Many guitar preamps provide gain or volume control, which allows you to boost the signal to the desired level. This is particularly useful for achieving distortion or overdrive effects in electric guitars.
Phantom Power: Some guitar preamps, especially those used for acoustic-electric guitars with condenser microphones, provide phantom power (typically 48V) to power the microphone element. This is crucial for capturing the guitar's acoustic sound when recording or amplifying it.
Effects Integration: Some advanced guitar preamps include built-in effects, such as reverb, chorus, or delay. This eliminates the need for additional stompboxes or signal processors in the signal chain.
DI (Direct Input) Functionality: Guitar preamps often have a DI output that allows you to connect your guitar directly to a mixing console, audio interface, or recording equipment. This is common for acoustic-electric guitars when playing live or recording in a studio.
Tube vs. Solid-State Preamps: Guitar preamps can use either vacuum tubes (valves) or solid-state components. Tube preamps are known for their warm, vintage sound, while solid-state preamps tend to be more reliable and require less maintenance.
Usage in Studio Recording: In a studio setting, guitar preamps are used to capture the clean, unaltered sound of the guitar before applying effects or amplification. This allows for greater control during the mixing and post-production stages.
Live Performances: In live performances, especially with electric guitars, preamps can be used to shape the guitar's tone before it goes into an amplifier or a PA system. This ensures that the guitar's sound is consistent and well-balanced in a live mix.
Compatibility: When selecting a guitar preamp, it's important to consider compatibility with your specific guitar and amplification equipment. Some preamps are designed for specific pickup types or guitar styles.
Price Range: Guitar preamps come in a wide price range, from affordable entry-level models to high-end, professional-grade options. The choice often depends on your specific needs and budget.
In summary, guitar preamps play a crucial role in amplifying and shaping the sound of electric and acoustic-electric guitars. They offer control over tone, gain, and effects, making them valuable tools for both studio recording and live performances. The choice of preamp depends on your musical style, equipment, and tonal preferences.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i plug this in my pa system and not have to use a guitar amplifier |
Answer: | You can but I doubt that it would sound as good as being plugged in front of a real guitar amp. |
Question: | Cual sería el adaptador que necesitaría comprar? Hay varias opciones y estoy confundido. Gracias por la ayuda |
Answer: | Adapter DC9V with the current greater than or equal to 100MA is ok. |
Question: | What power adapter do I need for this? Should list this in sales ad because a normal adapter will fry the pedal |
Answer: | I own 5 Mosky pedals all of them work perfectly with a standard Boss-style center-negative 9V ac adapter. I have them powered with Gator brand power suppies, and I have them powered with Hiree brand supplies too. Question: | Plugged this in and tried to use it. Couldn't seem to have any effect, any ideas? Knobs at max had no effect still |
Answer: | I know this is a basic question, but did you have the cable running from the guitar plugged in and firmly seated in the input jack of the pedal and the cable that plugs into the output jack of the pedal (runs to your amplifier) also firmly seated in the output jack? It’s possible that if not firmly seated, you’ll still pass a signal to the amp but the signal is either not passing through the circuitry or (in the case of the input jack) the pedal circuitry is not energized because that’s the “on switch” as it were when the guitar cable is plugged all the way in; either scenario can occur in most pedals with a hard wired true bypass. I learned this the hard way 15-20 years ago. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Could I plug this into my computer and use audacity to record |
Answer: | If you have a recording interface, you should be able to just plug from the quarter inch out on the Joyo to the quarter inch in on the interface. If you are using the computers 3.5 millimeter input, just make sure you do trial run or two to set the Joyo's Level control so that it doesn't distort the pc input. You may also need adapters or cables to fit the actone and pc jacks in order use them together. |
Question: | Can you bypass the cabinet simulator? is there a switch for that? (in case i want to use it with a guitar amp instead of direct to pa |
Answer: | Oh yeah, for bypassing the simulator you press on the switch and it turns the pedal off/on. you can use this as a preamp or a drive to get the AC flavour. The pedal itself isn't a cab simulator but more so copies the AC variety like a Drive pedal. The voice knob is the control for shaping the sound of the amp styles (inside the pedal) (I personally enjoy having the voice at 10o'clock.) I think this will do fine going into your chain and out to an amplifier. Hope this helps! |
Question: | I was wondering how much signal gain/boost this pedal is capable of? Looking to get an instrument level close to line level to feed a headphone amp. TIA |
Answer: | I'm not sure on a technical level how much signal boost this pedal can provide, and I've seen nothing online either, but I've used it straight into a PA without a guitar amp (it's an amp simulator so that sounds pretty good) and it had more than enough signal to work with. |
Question: | hi...is this good for bass |
Answer: | Ran bass through it straight into the PA. Turned effects off and it sounded really good. Used for worship. Typically play guitar and have several pedals on my board with this the last pedal on board. Bypassed all pedals for bass. Ran bass into the input and out to the PA. |

Product description
In early 1984 BOSS released two strange new devices under the name “The Pocket Series”. One of those devices was the FA-1 FET Preamp and it quickly found its rightful place among the legends of tone when The Edge of U2 used it on the recording of “Unforgettable Fire” as well as placing it in his following touring rigs. The Clover Preamp/Boost is our faithful interpretation of the FA-1 but with several additional features that we believe make this amazing circuit even better. You won’t want to be without your lucky tone-shaper at any gig!
- The Volume control allows you to set your volume at unity or as a boost to push your amp or dirt pedals
- 3 EQ controls to give you tons of control to cut or boost Bass, Mid and Treble
- The rotary switch has 3 settings: Full EQ, No Mid and No EQ
- Low Cut dip switch removes some of the lows if you feel your tone is too muddy and can help you cut through a mix
- In addition to the standard 1/4 inch input and output; the Clover has an XLR output for using as an acoustic or bass preamp
User questions & answers
Question: | Does anyone have experience using this with a bass guitar |
Answer: | Yes, It worked fine for bass and pretty much any type of instrument you plug into it. There is only the regular 1/4" guitar in jack. But, there is a XLR our as well as a 1/4" guitar out. Please note there is no option for using only a 9-volt battery. You need to use the electrical plug. |
Question: | is the buffer always on so the switch just engages the booster |
Answer: | https://www.jhspedals.com/products/guitar-pedals/prestige/In the footsteps of our long-ago discontinued Mr Magic pedal, we bring you the "final act" in boost magic...The Prestige! From buffer, to boost, to tone enhancer, the Prestige will prove to be a vital and necessary piece of gear for anyone's rig. With the boost knob set to zero, you have in your hands an amazing buffer/enhancer for long cable runs as well as a tool that will simply add some life back into your rig. When the Boost knob is in the first 25% you will get different flavors of the buffer/enhancer as well as slight volume increases. When the Boost knob is set between 25% and 50% you have a powerful, dynamic solo boost that adds definition, clarity and a little magic to your solos and lead passages. When set at 50% or more, the Prestige gives you the ability to break up your tube amp in a smooth and natural way resulting in real tube overdrive from the preamp section of your tube amp. The last 25% of the volume range can completely destroy your amp in the best way possible, resulting in rich soaring sustain, breakup, and on some amps even a smooth warm fuzzy growl. When wide open, the Prestige will give you up to 27dB. |
Question: | Hey, can this run on a battery, or only with the PS |
Answer: | The Clover's current draw is too high for a standard 9V battery, so you need to use it with a power supply. Brian Meader Sales Manager The Guitar Sanctuary |
Question: | Where is the idea location to place this unit amongst all my other pedal on the floor? (2) Should I hold off on purchasing a Buffer |
Answer: | I have personally had the best luck putting the Clover after any other dirt/overdrive/distortion pedals but before delay or reverb effects. In this way, you can dial in the volume to work as a nice boost that will allow the tone/character of your other dirt pedals to shine through with the added volume to push the front end of your amp harder. Additionally, when selecting the full EQ, it provides a variety of tone shaping options. Whenever I put the Clover before other dirt/overdrive pedals, it sounded as though the clover was saturating the input of the other dirt pedal, and the overall sound was compressed in a way that I didn’t like. With the Clover last amongst my dirt pedals, I could hear my overdrive tone coming through (Wampler Euphoria), but driven harder and much more open than having the pedals ordered the other way around. Regarding the buffer, it depends on how long your cables are. Additionally, the Clover has a moderately high input impedance, so it will not present a significant load to your guitar or any other pedal around it (unless a preceding pedal has unusually high output impedance). If you dialed the Clover in for unity gain, you might not need a standalone buffer, but that’s a hard question to answer, as it’s greatly dependent on you own setup. |

JHS Clover
The Clover is an end all preamp/boost circuit for any electric, acoustic, or bass player. The EQ is simple, powerful and doesn’t allow a bad sound. No matter what style of music you play or amp that you use, the Clover will prove to be an indispensable tool. While the Clover excels at being a preamp / boost for dirt pedals, the magic is in pushing your tube amplifier into natural overdrive. From country, rock, metal and even acoustic, The Clover covers every base.
Controls
The Clover has four standard controls and one rotary switch on the top. The Volume control allows you to set your volume at unity or as a boost to push your amp or dirt pedals. There are three EQ controls to give you tons of control to cut or boost Bass, Mids, and Treble. The rotary switch has three settings: Full EQ, No Mid, and No EQ. When set to Full EQ all three EQ controls are in operation, giving you full control over the full range of EQ available. The No Mid setting is an exact replica of the original FA-1, removing the ability to control the Mids and leaving them in a fixed setting. When in the No EQ mode all the EQ settings are removed and the Clover becomes a straight FET boost, perfect for pushing an amp. On the right side of the pedal there is a Low Cut dip switch. This removes some of the lows if you feel your tone is too muddy and can help you cut through a mix.

Question: | Will this replace a Fender Classic 4 by Fishman |
Answer: | No this will not work because of where it is positioned on the guitar if look at the fender classic it is flat square as apposed to this one whitch is arched this one is positioned on a curved section of the body where as the classic fits on a flat surface section. I hope this answers your question if you have any more inquiries feel free to ask me any time if i have an answer Ill give it if I don't I can find out fairly easily for you. Take care and good luck with the guitar I'm sure you figure it out and be jammin in no time. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I am confused; can this pedal take a solid body guitar as it's input, such as a Telecaster, and the output signal will sound like an acoustic guitar |
Answer: | I`ve tried a solid body electric strat and it didn`t sound very good. It only seems to work on an acoustic with a piezo or a magnetic. Mine is a 400 dollar guild with a piezo and it sounds great. However it might sound good on an electric with a piezo but I`m not sure. |
Question: | what is the max sample length for 3rd party IRs |
Answer: | The nuix optima air is only suited for acoustic guitar IR`s which are of very short duration maybe a few milliseconds. I use the ones from Sigma. |
Question: | Anyone try this with a 12-string with a piezo pickup to see if it gives it a more natural acoustic sound when using the IRs |
Answer: | I tried it with a Tacomine 12 and wasn't very impressed with the results. There are other similar pedals that include settings for 12-string acoustics. |
Question: | Has anyone used this for direct recording? How is the noise level? Does is have nylon ir’s |
Answer: | Yes I`ve tried it for direct recording and it sounds fabulous. I use a guild D-240E with a piezo pickup which costs 399 new. You`ll need to experiment with it to find which preset works best for you, I use number 10 or 11. I`ve used numerous simulators over the years and this one nails it more than any other. I can`t imagine how it could sound any closer, Now it doesn`t come loaded with any classic guitar ir`s but you can load some from 3 Sigma Audio ir`s for classic guitar. Be sure to do the firmware update and download the editor. The noise level is very low. |

The beauty of an analog circuit is that chaos makes the muse. While you tweak the knob, it affects itself and also other parameters.
Driven by NUX's white box algorithm (physical modeling) of Neve 1073, Optima Air can replicate the chaos in a compact size, while providing lots of features like USB audio stream, Reverb function, and IR Capture.
Editor Software
You can load 3rd party IRs and edit preset names through editor software.
Optima Air also supports USB audio stream, which means you could use Optima Air as recording interface. You can adjust USB AUDIO routing through editor software. For WINDOWS operating system, please download NUX ASIO Driver from SUPPORT. The editor software offers you built-in LEVEL adjust knob, so you can tweak the 3rd party IR level.
Capturing a Guitar Profile
Run the pedal in capturing mode; press the IR footswitch and hold, plug in the power cable.
You need to use a condenser microphone for better result. Connect the acoustic guitar to the Optima Air's input, place the microphone and connect to a microphone to a microphone preamp. And connect the microphone preamp's output to the Optima Air's Return
Make sure everything's connected, and you are all set to capture.

User questions & answers
Question: | No matter what I do, the unit stays in tuner mode. No instructions, how do I get out of tuner mode |
Answer: | Get rid of it. These tuners are a piece of garbage. First one I got the volume knob stop working. The replacement just didn't work. Got my money back. Still waiting for another alternative unfortunately. |
Question: | How much leeway is there in selecting the EQ position in terms of closer to or further from the neck |
Answer: | If I am understanding your question, you can pretty much position the EQ, at your discretion...The EQ has a slight curve on the mounting plate, allowing you to move EQ forward or backward to match the, curvature of your guitar...the guitars curvature would be more of a factor in the placement of the EQ... |
Question: | I have a fender with a fisher now that doesn't work. can i change it out with this one |
Answer: | check the dimensions of the fisher against the Kmise if they are the same then I would say yes |
Question: | Are there instructions regarding the installation of this product |
Answer: | LOL no. If you don’t understand how to install, Look it up on YouTube, or don’t attempt yourself. Try a soundhole pickup instead which can easily be installed by a novice. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Should this be used with an amp, or does it work going direct into the PA |
Answer: | It works well either way. I have had success using it through expensive and cheap p.a. systems, and various guitar amps like Fishman and Bose. It always delivers the sound I want. |
Question: | Would this be suitable for boosting/controlling the signal of an acoustic guitar with contact pickups or would a boost pedal be better |
Answer: | I have found that this pedal is mostly to enhance the tone of the acoustic guitar. If you need to increase the volume you will be better off with some kind of booster pedal. |
Question: | Does it work with a adaptor DC 9.5v - 1A |
Answer: | I would recommend sticking with the official BOSS/Roland power supply or use a 9V battery. |
Question: | Does it it work well with standard/non ac/electrics mic'd |
Answer: | This box has no mic input. There are others that do, like the Zoom A3. The main function of this one is to process a piezo signal, and its tone controls are pretty minimal, so unless you want it for a piezo pickup, you should probably look at other boxes. |

AD-2 Acoustic Preamp Pedal
With the AD-2 Acoustic Preamp, acoustic-electric guitarists can now experience natural, studio-quality sound while performing on any stage. Equipped with an advanced BOSS sound engine, this compact pedal packs sophisticated processing power that belies its small size and simple, intuitive interface. Acoustic Resonance reproduces the complex resonance characteristics of your unplugged tone, while Ambience provides pro-level reverberation perfectly optimized for acoustic guitar. The AD-2 also features essential stage tools such as a notch filter for feedback control, a balanced DI out for direct connection to a PA, and a convenient mute function for tuning and switching guitars.
Bring Your Acoustic’s Natural Sound to the Stage
The tone of an acoustic guitar is created by the complex interaction of sounds from its body, top, strings, and other elements. And as you play with varying techniques, dynamics, and more, this interaction constantly evolves to create the rich, woody sound we love. Unfortunately, the standard undersaddle piezo pickups installed on most stage guitars simply can’t reproduce this resonant complexity. The AD-2’s Acoustic Resonance effect solves this issue by analyzing the input signal as you play, and then employing advanced processing to beautifully recreate your guitar’s naturally evolving tone. Twisting the one-knob control adjusts multiple parameters inside the AD-2 to achieve the perfect tonal balance for any style, from delicate fingerpicking to intense strumming.
Enhance Your Guitar with Pro-Quality Reverb
After using Acoustic Resonance to bring back your guitar’s natural, intimate tone, adding some further depth and dimension with a little reverb makes it that much better. With the AD-2’s Ambience effect, you can dial in studio-quality reverb for any performing environment. Unlike standard reverbs that can cloud an acoustic guitar’s sound, the optimized BOSS algorithms in the AD-2 produce lush, deep ambience that perfectly complements your instrument’s voice. Like the Acoustic Resonance effect, a simple one-knob control tweaks many interlocked parameters under the hood, giving you access to a wide range of detailed reverb sounds.
DI Output and Feedback Killer
The AD-2 features two independent outputs for performance flexibility. Connect the Output jack to your acoustic guitar amp or stage monitor, and use the Line Out to send a balanced signal direct to the PA mixer. It’s even possible to turn off the Ambience effect in the Line Out signal, giving the PA engineer the flexibility to add their own reverb at the board. And if you encounter any low-frequency feedback issues on stage, the AD-2’s notch filter has you covered. As soon as you hear that familiar rumble, just turn the Notch knob until it goes away. It’s that easy!

The Practical Alternative
If you prefer the good old fashion tube amps, you hang on to that. We totally get the picture of years and years of carrying the amp anywhere you play and bonding with it. But if you've felt that carrying a tube amp is of a lot of trouble, and wanted something that is light and compact, but most importantly, sounds AUTHENTIC, take a look at this Coral Amp. This amp modeler is the real deal! The 16 models have covered from Fender Twin style crystal clean to the edge of break-up bite of Tweed, to the classic British roaring crunch, to modern monstrous hi-gain.
16 of Them
The 16 hand-picked amp models can cover basically all your tonal needs like California clean, British crunch, modern hi-gain. We simply get inspiration from those prestigious amp models through out the history of rock n' roll. And we spent days and nights trying to tune those algorithms, making them remain the maximum of authenticity.
Intuitive to Use
The layout of controls is as simple as it can get. LOW, MID, HIGH, VOL., GAIN are as what they are on those real amps. The knobs are made of LED, which can well show the working state of the pedal. And they are very responsive. Meanwhile, this thing is built like a tank. The Aluminum-alloy die-cast casing withstands wear and tear.
Bonus Features
Coral Amp has a Cab Sim function with a LED light. If the Cab Sim LED night flashes, it means that's the Cab Sim is on. If it stays still, then it's off. The 16 amp models would be divided into 2 channels. You can use the footswitch to choose between channels. And if you hold the footswitch button, you can turn the pedal off. And it's buffer bypass.

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this be connected straight to a recording interface to record |
Answer: | Yea, it is like any other pedal with in/out quarter inch guitar cables. As long as you ‘recording interface’ takes typical guitar cable input. |
Question: | Can this be used with bass |
Answer: | Was designed with guitar in mind, but can be used with Bass. You just need to find the right amp for your style of music. |
Question: | Since it has cab sim can you plug headphones in |
Answer: | It wasn't designed with that in mind. We suggest you to check our Rushead Pocket AMP if you want to use headphones. |
Product description
This is a pre-amp unit, perfect for mounting directly into the side of your standard acoustic guitar or cigar box guitar.
For standard acoustic guitars, this Curve pre-amp gives you an on-board equalizer and volume control and helps boost and clarify the signal before it goes to your amplifier. For cigar box guitars, using a FLAT pre-amp is guaranteed to make your CBG sound better, compared to wiring a piezo straight to a jack.
The rod-style piezo can be built to go under the saddle on standard guitars, and can be built into a bridge or placed directly under the bridge for optimal vibrational pickup on cigar box guitars.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this come with directions |
Answer: | No, no instructions, none of the 10 or 12 that I have purchased over the past couple of years had instructions. Question please, what is your intended application? I could help you with some tips & tricks. They are a very good rod piezo, the pre amp and graphic equilizer are very good....the 9v. Battery last a long time, hundreds of hours in my experience. The built in battery check light is very handy. The leads/wires are plenty long enough and all is soldered together & ready to go. My recommendation is to purchase the unit & experiment with it. Put a battery in it, plug you standard 1/4” guitar cord into the unit, plunge the other end into your amp. Tap on the piezo, hold it directly onto the top of a guitar or hold it tightly to the bridge, you will be impressed with the quality. Every application will have little nuances, but the concept is all the same. The pickup amplified vibrations it comes into contact with! |
Question: | What size is the small jack that connects the piezo to the amp |
Answer: | This is a 2.5 mm mono miniature Jack plug (also called 2.5 mm miniature phone plug). Make sure you have a spare one in case you plan to cut the cable for shortening purposes and re-solder this plug. The original plug is not suitable for disassembling. |
Question: | Will this work for an acoustic bass |
Answer: | It Is designed to work with a piezo pickup. You would need to install the pickup under the bridge or hook up a different piezo pickup. I modified it and installed it in a small wooden cigar box with an input jack for the guitar and the equalizer jack for output to the amp. |
Question: | Does the 9volt holder have a flat top or a slight angle |
Answer: | there is a slight curve to the face of the pre-amp unit |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the case metal, or plastic |
Answer: | Metal Best sounding acoustic preamp for the money you can find I own 4 of them. |
Question: | My unit isn't working with 9v batteries like it's supposed to. do i have to use a 9v power input or return the unit |
Answer: | It should work with 9V batteries. They just don't last long. I recommend the wall wart for it. If it doesn't work at all with a 9V battery I would assume it's defective. I only use this power adapter: http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-PSU-SB-BEHRINGER-POWER-SUPPLY/dp/B000T9L7W2/ref=pd_bxgy_267_img_y |
Question: | Would this pedal help eliminate feedback that occurs at higher volumes with Piezo pickups |
Answer: | no, the pedal had the worst tone of any acoustic pedal i tried, save your money and step up to a Fishman Aura16 Acoustic Imaging Pedal, will sound better and help control feedback!!! |
Question: | This thing only adds distortion to my acoustic guitar, no matter how I have it set. is it defective |
Answer: | The one we bought has been working fine. We haven't experienced any distortion issues with our unit. Couple of things to try: make sure the battery is fresh or you are using a 9V power source; start with low gain settings and work up with tone controls centered; Try connecting the output of the ADI21 to the line-level input on your amp, you may be overdriving the microphone-level input on your amp; your guitar may be overdriving the input to the ADI21. If none of that helps nor the other six answers help, then I'd say it could be defective. --regards |

This amazing little box is essential for piezo-equipped guitars and will make your acoustic guitar sound come to life! The ADI21 combines the features of an active DI (direct injection) box with our proprietary tube/mic emulation circuitry. Enjoy a full 3-band EQ with sweepable mids and a Blend control that allows you to mix the amount of amp and mic emulation you want with your direct signal. And if you prefer the “old-school” approach, just step on the switch and the ADI21 functions as a rather superb active DI box.
Great Sound, Naturally
By their very nature, piezo pickups tend to be very bright, with somewhat reduced bass response and warmth. The ADI21 combines the features of an active DI (direct injection) box with our proprietary microphone/tube emulation. The BLEND control allows you to mix the amount of modeled tone with your instrument’s normal output. The resulting sound is more natural with smooth saturation, just as if your guitar were being mic’ed in the great outdoors.
EQ and More…
Armed with an onboard 3-band EQ, with sweepable mids to keep feedback under control, the ADI21 effectively eliminates the harsh harmonics of piezo pickups. The output is laid out on 1⁄4" TS or balanced gold-plated XLR connectors, which can be used to send a low-impedance signal to the mixing console or straight to tape. You also get a ground lift switch to eliminate annoying ground loop hum problems. You can power this little lifesaver with a 9 V battery or our PSU-SB DC power supply (not included).
Sound Value
Putting some acoustic glory into your recordings or live performances has never been this easy—or sounded this incredible. The ADI21 gives you a full DI, amp/microphone simulation and a 3-band EQ with sweepable mids – a lot of value in one little box! Try the V-TONE ACOUSTIC ADI21 at your local Behringer dealer and find out just how affordable great acoustic sound can be.
