Some make sound. Others make history When developing the F8n, it was our mission to provide every sound professional with the tools to create something exceptional. With features such as Advanced Look-Ahead Hybrid Limiters, Zoom AutoMix and mic/line options for both XLR and TRS inputs, the F8n is the next generation of professional field recording. We Stacked the Deck Advanced Look-Ahead Hybrid Limiters The F8n is equipped with Advanced Look-Ahead Hybrid Limiters that provide overload protection no matter what comes your way. By adding a 1 millisecond delay, the limiters "look ahead" anticipating clipping before it's recorded. Limiting is applied to each of the 8 channels simultaneously at full resolution, with 10 to 20 dB of headroom to ensure pristine audio on every take. Mic Preamps The F8n features a super-low noise floor (-127 dBu EIN) and high gain (up to 75 dB). Mic/line levels are selectable for both XLR and TRS inputs. Zoom AutoMix Meet your new assistant sound editor, the Zoom AutoMix. This smart software automatically adjusts the levels of your mix to reduce the amount of ambient sound, so you can focus on what really matters - capturing a well-balanced mix. State-Of-The-Art Time Code The F8n utilizes a Temperature Compensated Crystal Oscillator (TCXO) that generates time code at 0.2 ppm accuracy, enabling rock-solid syncing of audio and video. User questions & answers
Question: | Is there any recording time limit per recording? I’d like to use it to record a 3 hour community event in one continuous 4K shot using a 256GB card |
Answer: | A 950 W heater at 117 vAC will draw 8.1 amps. This cube tap is rated for 15 A, which gives you an almost 2:1 safety factor. You will be perfectly fine plugging the heater into this cube tap. It is well within the operating margin of the cube tap. |
Question: | I bought this and all batteries die way to quickly. What’s going on |
Answer: | The two flat prongs are the same size. |
Question: | what's in the box |
Answer: | 3, bought this 2 weeks ago thinking it was an adabter. It's not, 3 prongs go into the wall and give you more outlets |
Question: | Is the hdmi output clean or does it show any status/meter overlays |
Answer: | The item I received in Feb 2020 did not match the "cube" picture of the 3 prong item. The dimensions of the case (excluding the prongs to insert in an outlet) are 1.73"x1.33"x1.69" (tall x wide x deep) when oriented with ground on the right and 2 spades on the left. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can you add a remote control to this recording device and daisy chain microphones |
Answer: | There is no plug for remote control, as there was for the DM 520, nor any way to add one, apparently. |
Question: | silent operatio |
Answer: | Yes! |
Question: | Can you actually hear through regular Playback mode |
Answer: | Yes, you have the option of built in speaker which you can set on or off, and headphone jack for ear buds, headphones, or playing through a boom box or stereo/HiFi system. As with any external speaker/headphone pay attention to specs on impedance (which seem reasonable normal in this case)., it has a reasonably powerful speaker for such a small device. You can adjust volume from the playback interface while playing. Volume control seems awkward at first, but it is fine - actually consult manual diagram and it is easy to access and adjust once you are clear how. See the operating diagrams on volume control steps. They make it much more clear as to how to quickly operate the device properly. The menu inside the device is not overly complex and with a little clarity from the quick start and operating manual documentation it is not hard to fully set up and use the recorder. It also has jacks for stereo headphone and microphone. Three mics are built in. The speaker is on the back top of the device. Very good for such a small compact device. This is a high quality device consistent with Olympus quality. I can hear it fine with volume set halfway or less. You must control volume from the player controls on screen which is fine. There is no physical volume wheel or slide switch. Sound quality is good and adjustable with an profile equalizer for type of source like e.g., music, rock, jazz, classical. Has scenes (modes) for recording and playback. Personally, I am just unhappy about the lack of native Audible compatibility, per my review. If it had that I would be very happy with it. I will probably keep it and add buy another recorder like DM-620 for Audible. Otherwise, so far I like the recorder in terms of operation and rest of features. Choose carefully between the various models in terms of features, model line and price. It is just not what I needed it for and was misled by Olympus pre-sales. Olympus by the way makes tremendous cameras as well. Yes I know, a little more than the question you asked. internal Menu very good and easy to navigate. Control design is very good and positive. This device seems primarily designed for lectures and meetings, notes to self, transcription; With the added benefit of ability to play music or audio files or any .mp3 or .wav (with several coices of quality/compression/file size) files and the ability to add up to 32 Gb of external storage. You can move them back and forth between your computer where you can also edit them using built in USB (2.0) connector. So very convenient and self contained. |
Question: | What languages can it transcribe |
Answer: | This does not do any actual transcription. "Transcription Mode" allows easier starting/stopping of playback for someone who is transcribing the recording...that is, capturing what was said for a printed version. |
Product features
TRESMIC Three-microphone system for superior sound
The DM-720 features a three microphone system that includes both directional and omnidirectional microphones to faithfully capture the depth and fullness of the sounds recorded. The stereo microphones are arranged at a 90° angle to produce a natural stereo experience, with an added central microphone to compensate for low-range sounds. This Tresmic combination provides a wide frequency range for the most demanding professionals.
Voice Playback function for efficient transcription
The Voice Playback function allows you to skip non-voice parts during playback, and only play the parts of the file where there is vocal content. Olympus' Voice Playback saves time and improves efficiency during transcription.
Transcription Mode
Transcription mode is convenient when creating minutes from your recordings. While transcribing, users frequently repeat play, and stop to check the content. In Transcription Mode, the recorder will automatically playback the 3 seconds before the stop, so you can check the contents before proceeding. On the other hand, fast forward is preset to 3.5x so you can conveniently skip the silences in your recording.
USB direct connection
The DM-720 can connect directly to your PC via the built-in USB connector. This makes it possible to save data anytime, anywhere. Not only can you save and share data, but the DM-720 can be charged via USB. All operations of recording, saving, sharing, and charging can be performed on this single, smart and easy-to-use voice recorder.
Zoom microphone for recording from a distance
Using the latest technologies, zoom microphone unleashes the power of proximity in noisy environments or when recording from a distant position. The zoom microphone allows you to expand and contract the microphone range by adjusting the direction with the '+' and '-' buttons on the recorder.
File Divide function
Large audio files can be divided on the recorder without the use of a PC. Split and divide files, by topic or size for easy file management.
Intelligent Auto Mode automatically adjusts microphone sensi
The Intelligent Auto Mode function automatically adjusts the microphone sensitivity according to the input level. To set this function, simply select 'Auto' for the recording level from the menu. This function automatically keeps track of the input level and simultaneously adjusts the recording so that it will always record in the best quality. User questions & answers
Question: | Any issues with sound going out of sync after a certain amount of time |
Answer: | Didn't check sRGB, but at least the one I got almost fully covered AdobeRGB, like 98%. Not as good as my old HP LP2475 which has a much wider gamut.Keep in mind, at least on Windows, Photoshop has scaling issues on a 4k display. The other Adobe programs work fine. |
Question: | Does the DR-70D lose it's settings if you remove the batteries |
Answer: | If using multiple monitors with different resolutions, make sure the highest resolution monitor is the primary one. I thought, mistakenly it turns out, that I'd like to use my 1080P monitor for the desktop and use Lightroom's dual monitor support to put the image on the higher resolution secondary display. It is amazing how many boxes from Lightroom to just plain installing software became difficult to impossible to use. My new plan is to use my HP 5K monitor as the primary display and this NEC for Lightroom's secondary image display. |
Question: | can you monitor or adjust each mic line seperately on the tascam 70d online reviews says you can only do that with the tascam 60d mk |
Answer: | since I don't have the two monitors side by side, can't answer that specifically. I am also a photographer, and once I hooked this up - the clarity blew me away. I love it - have not color calibrated it yet. |
Question: | Can the 701d be powered any way besides batteries? ex. usb or a/c |
Answer: | No it does not but it is well worth the price |

TASCAM DR-70D
The DR-70D from TASCAM is the ultimate audio recording solution for filmmakers. Four balanced XLR mic inputs meet the requirements of production sound, from professional users to indie DSLR shooters. The compact format can be mounted either above or below a camera, and a pair of built-in microphones can capture sound on-set. The interface is designed for quick adjustment, with additional features to keep recording levels under control.
Four XLR mic inputs with phantom power are included on the DR-70D, enough to cover busy scenes. The High-Quality HDDA(High Definition Discrete Architecture) Mic Preamps include 64dB of gain for quiet performances, and all four inputs have individual gain controls. Each input has a limiter and low cut filter available for controlling volume. Also included is Dual Recording mode, which records a safety copy of your audio at a lower level to prevent distorted takes. Quality components like 5532 op amps are used throughout for the clearest audio possible.
Tracks on the DR-70D are captured to SD card, SDHC or SDXC media – up to 128GB cards are supported. The recorder has tripod mounts on the top and bottom of the unit, allowing it to be mounted on a camera, a follow-focus cage, or used standalone. Other production friendly features include a slate tone, low-noise buttons, a powerful headphone output, and standard AA battery power.
Uniquely designed for the needs of filmmakers, television producers, advertisers, and documentarians, the DR-70D packs multitrack recording into a package compact enough to use with any camera.
Two built-in omnidirectional mics
Two omnidirectional microphones allow easy recording of natural stereo sound without using external mics. Used in combination with one or two other mics, the DR-70D becomes a compact setup for recording interviews and ambient sound at the same time.
4 XLR/TRS combo jacks allow a variety of setups
XLR/TRS inputs are built-into the DR-70D. The four-channel design enables combinations of shotgun microphones, lavaliere mics, and the built-in stereo mic to be recorded individually. Channels 1 and 2 can be set to stereo input and channels 3 and 4 can be set to the built-in mics, making a variety of mic configurations possible.
3.5mm Stereo Mini Jack Input Accepts Video Camera Mics
The 3.5mm stereo 1-2 input mini jack allows the connection of consumer video camera mics. For example, connect a video camera mic for ambiance to jack 1-2, and shotgun mics to the XLR 3-4 jacks. This unit can supply plug-in power to the microphone and has a maximum input level of +10 dBV.
Slate tone generator makes alignment with video files easy
The built-in generator can produce slate tones that can be used as references when aligning audio and video. Line up the waveforms when you need perfect sync between audio and video. In addition to being able to produce slate tones when recording starts or when it starts and stops, the Slate button can be used to add slate tones at any desired point.

User questions & answers
Question: | When you connect a mic into the input line. Can you mix it with the built-in mics |
Answer: | No, but ZOOM makes (and Amazon sells) another model that will record FOUR channels --- the "same" two built-in mics PLUS two LINE/XLR jacks: the H5 (which I also own). (See here: http://amzn.to/2l8U4nC) (that's a lowercase L and N) |
Question: | How can I use the zoom h1 as a dslr mic.? If it is possible do I have to press record on the zoom h1 and and press the record button on the dslr whe |
Answer: | Just a note about recording into a dslr: the bitrate and sample rate you set on the zoom doesn't affect the bitrate and sample rate recorded onto the dslr file. Your dslr always determines the bitrate and sample rate. (IE: for most Canon's that's 44khz/16 bit). The audio quality from the zoom will be better than your on-camera mic simply because the microphone itself is higher quality, but don't expect to be recording 96khz/24 bit audio straight into your dslr's .mov files! |
Question: | can I record a piece to video with the Zoom recording my voice and then synch it to video |
Answer: | Sure thing. I use mine as a primary aiduo recorder for my Nikon D5300. I use the sound from the camera as areference track and then stnc the wave file from the Zoom to the video using Final Cut X. Works perfect with much better sound quality. |
Question: | What does this device actually record onto - some sort of a memory card or flash drive? I'm looking for something that will record at least 6 hours |
Answer: | You get roughly 12 hours on the 2GB micro SD card included, in MP3 320kbps. Quality is excellent. If you want WAV format your looking at about 2.5 hours with the stock card. Larger cards are cheap though so it's upgradable. |
