10 best usb2 audio interfaces

USB 2.0 audio interfaces are a type of hardware used in audio recording and production, especially in home and project studios. These interfaces connect to a computer via a USB 2.0 port and serve as a bridge between analog and digital audio signals. Here's what you need to know about them:

  1. Connectivity: USB 2.0 audio interfaces use a USB 2.0 connection to link up with your computer. USB 2.0 is a common and widely available interface, which makes these audio interfaces compatible with most computers.

  2. Audio Input and Output: These interfaces typically offer a range of audio inputs and outputs. Common options include microphone preamps, instrument inputs, line inputs, and headphone outputs. The number and type of inputs/outputs can vary depending on the model.

  3. Conversion Quality: USB 2.0 audio interfaces include analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) for recording and digital-to-analog converters (DACs) for playback. The quality of these converters impacts the overall sound quality, and many USB 2.0 interfaces offer high-quality converters for professional audio recording.

  4. Sample Rate and Bit Depth: USB 2.0 audio interfaces support various sample rates and bit depths, allowing you to choose the level of audio fidelity you need for your recordings. Common sample rates include 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 96 kHz, and 192 kHz, with bit depths of 16-bit or 24-bit.

  5. Phantom Power: Some USB 2.0 audio interfaces include phantom power, which is essential for condenser microphones that require external power to operate. Phantom power is often switchable on individual input channels.

  6. MIDI Connectivity: Many USB 2.0 audio interfaces also offer MIDI input and output ports, allowing you to connect MIDI instruments and controllers to your computer for music production.

  7. Software Compatibility: These interfaces are typically compatible with a wide range of digital audio workstation (DAW) software, making them versatile tools for recording and producing music on your computer.

  8. Portability: USB 2.0 audio interfaces are often compact and portable, making them suitable for musicians and producers who need a mobile recording solution.

  9. Latency: Low latency is essential for real-time monitoring during recording. USB 2.0 audio interfaces often come with dedicated software or hardware features to minimize latency and ensure a seamless recording experience.

  10. Price Range: USB 2.0 audio interfaces come in a variety of price ranges, making them accessible for beginners and professionals alike. The price typically depends on the number of inputs/outputs and the quality of preamps and converters.

In summary, USB 2.0 audio interfaces are versatile tools for capturing and processing audio on a computer. They are widely used in music production, podcasting, and home recording studios, offering a balance between affordability and professional-grade features. When choosing an interface, consider your specific recording needs and the compatibility with your computer and software.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the headphone jack on this for monitoring your inputs, or does your PC audio come through it aswell
Answer: Hi, You can monitor your inputs and listen to playback from your computer simultaneously, which allows you to create overdubs with next to zero latency. You can either choose to monitor the inputs using the Direct Monitor switch, or you can use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW. If using the Direct Monitor feature the input signal will be passed directly to the line and headphone outputs, whereas if you use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW, you will be hearing the audio you're recording back from your DAW. In either case, you can still hear any other audio playing back from your DAW at the same time as recording. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support
Question: What type of usb cable does this come with? is it a type-c to type-c or a type-c to type-a
Answer: Hi, This comes with a type-c to type-a cable. If you have type-c ports, you will need to purchase a type-c to type-c USB cable separately. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support
Question: Does the XLR input only record audio to the left side
Answer: Hi, When recording a single microphone, you should ensure that you create a mono audio track in your DAW instead of a stereo audio track. When you record onto a mono audio track, the output from that track will be heard on both sides of your headphones or speakers (ensuring the output is set to stereo), however, if you record onto a stereo track, the audio will just be recorded onto the left side of a stereo file and you will ony hear it on the left of your headphones/speakers. This is explained in more detail here: https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/206849779?flash_digest=62885ef974b4eb116f3b3ea2c9b9c38ddb871473 Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support

User questions & answers

Question: It appears that phantom power gets switched on all 4 mic pres simultaneously. Can I use dynamic & condenser mics together without causing damage
Answer: Because the one in the front is NOT powered. The rear inputs can power mics or active pickups, up to 48v. I run 9v batteries in all my active guitars, so they're already powered, so I just run all my guitars into the front input. If I'm recording my 4x12 cab, I use the XLR in the back with my SM57.
Question: will this power a microphone that requires phantom power? sorry if this is a dumb question, im new to XLR microphones
Answer: Your question has me curious. The data speed for this device will not get close to the rates requiring a cable with the thunderbolt 3 type throughout. The audio stream will get there just as fast with their stock cable and with a reasonably priced ($6-10) usb type c cable. The nicer cables are more about throughput than latency.
Question: Can it write four tracks simultaneosly
Answer: Audio is routed from the computer through USB-C to Evo. There are two 1/4” outputs on the back of the Evo to plug into speakers.
Question: Does this include a usb power cable that goes from the interface to the computer
Answer: My interface remembers its gain settings when rebooting. Both when I power cycle the unit and when my computer power cycles. Make sure you download the most up to date drivers for it.

Question: tv has no audio out but has usb. Will this work
Answer: You can use it as either. It has Left and Right 1/4 and XLR outputs for stand-alone, and a USB cable if you want to connect it to your computer. Keep in mind, if you do connect it to your computer it will only output a stereo track (2 tracks)
Question: ASIO Driver
Answer: I haven't tried it but I don't think it will work. It's made for PC and Android systems. I'm pretty sure the Xbox and ps3 won't recognize it as an input device.
Question: I want to digitize reel to reel recordings and vinyl LP records. Will this work to input the sound to my laptop
Answer: The signal strength is great. No direct line of sight necessary. U can actually control the TV box perfectly from another room.
Question: bit
Answer: Yes u can use it for quick typing on Ps4, it's not a pc keyboard which would be better fit 2 hand use like a pc keyboard, but if you're like me I prefer this small one it Also don't require a lot of table space like a full keyboard.

S/PDIF optical output and headphone out with volume control.

Includes software such as XT Software's energyXT for recording right out of the box.

PC and Mac Ready

This ultra-compact, USB-powered device lets you connect your PC or Mac computer to virtually any piece of audio gear. It gets its power from your computer's USB bus, so no external power supply or batteries are required. And the UCA222 requires no special setup or drivers--just plug it in to a free USB port and start recording.

Versatility

The UCA222 features two analog mono inputs for connecting any line-level device, such as a mixer or tape deck, and two analog mono outputs for connecting active speakers or studio monitors. On the digital side, the UCA222 provides USB connectivity and an additional S/PDIF optical output for direct analog-to-digital conversion. The stereo headphone output has a dedicated level control and allows you listen to either the input source or the computer output.

Plenty of Options

When used as a professional interface between a mixing console and your computer, myriad options become available. Some of these might include connecting the UCA222's RCA outputs to the TAPE INPUT jacks of your mixer or active monitors, or directly into the input channels of the mixer. Connecting to mixer input channels gives you access to equalization and allows you to use the AUX Send features of your mixer to build extremely versatile monitor mixes for your recording sessions.

Tons of Free Software

Because you'll want to take full advantage of the UCA222's podcasting and recording potential we've included a massive software package including Audacity, Podifier, Juice, Podnova and Golden Ear. You're ready to go live on your Mac or PC computer right out of the box! You also get more than 100 virtual instruments and over 50 effects plug-ins, turning your computer into a complete home-based or mobile recording studio from input to output.

When you're ready to take your recording projects to the next level, XT Software's energyXT is just the trick. This amazing DAW (digital audio workstation) makes it easy to manipulate your audio and MIDI files, turning song ideas into stunning CD or web-ready recordings. energyXT includes its own multi-FX processor, built-in synthesizers and a drum machine, both of which can be accessed directly via an external controller (such as our UMA25S or UMX25) or programmed in step-write mode.

Great Value

For a fraction of the cost of other USB audio interfaces, you can have state-of-the-art digital conversion, world-class recording and editing software, and hassle-free connectivity between your PC or Mac Computer and any piece of audio gear.

User questions & answers

Question: Will this device be able to take a stereo signal, have it processed by a linux machine and then output the modified stereo signal to it's RCA outputs
Answer: If the device is plugged into the linux machine via the USB cable, it will do this for you. With this hookup, it will produce a 2 way signal, even simultaneously, 1 going into the computer, 1 coming out from the computer. If need be, it’s even capable of looping an output signal back in, say to a recording app on your computer. Just make sure you flip the little black monitor switch to the off position to eliminate distortion, and the signal looping back in will be crystal clear and strong.
Question: Do I need to buy a separate cable to use this product? I'm not really sure how the I/O system works. Can someone explain? Thanks
Answer: Not sure of your intended use for this product.I bought the UCA222 because the earphone jack on my Dell laptop went bad. It worked really well for my needs, it has a USB plug that connects to the standard USB port on my laptop. Then I connect my earphones to a standard plug on the device. No other cable required for me.
Question: Can you connect to a USB power supply and use the analog to S/PDIF output
Answer: I don't know about the S/PDIF but I suspect it won't work very well. I tried using the analog in to headphone jack using a USB power supply and it sounded terrible. I thought it would be a way around having to use a computer and it didn't work. Once I plugged the UCA222 into a laptop instead of a power supply it sounded way better.
Question: Can I connect 5 of these to get 10 independent audio output channels generated by the computer via usb
Answer: There's nothing technically preventing you from connecting 5 of these to get 10 independent audio outputs. If your software supports it, your computer will just see them as 5 individual audio cards. The problem your likely to run into is your computer does have a limit on how many USB devices can function simultaneously (USB Bandwidth). One way around this problem is to use a Quad USB PCI Card, that has 4 USB port and each one in it's own controller. The next thing you will need to consider is how many PCI lanes you have (will determine how many USB controllers your PCI bus can support) Hope this helps.

Old School Meets Cutting Edge

The UCG102 is a USB interface that, like a guitar amp, receives signal from your guitar via a 1/4-inch input jack. A built-in USB cable then sends signal directly to your computer. It has a 1/4-inch headphone jack and PHONES volume dial so you can monitor your performance as you record, a CLIP LED to tell you when your signal is too hot, and a HI/LO level selector.

Plug Right In

The UCG102 works directly with your PC or Mac computer (ultra-low latency ASIO driver for PC audio optimization included). Since it's powered via the USB bus, no additional power supply is needed, saving you valuable power supply real estate.

User questions & answers

Question: ableton
Answer: IDK I got when I haINXP the damned thing never worked with,But I see no reason why it should not I got mainly as platfrom to hook my guitar up to and play with applications I had on computer and online. Dasically this should work with any recording software you have .
Question: can i use this as an output for a DAW
Answer: Perhaps i'm misunderstading but by output I assume you mean output to speakers/monitors? If so, I dont believe this unit can as it only has input and headphones for ports. Could maybe use headphones as a mono line to speakers.
Question: I would like to use this for playing on-line lessons and youtube videos. Will the pc's audio come through the devices headphone jack with the guitars
Answer: Most likely, unfortunately I couldn't use the one I bought because it doesn't work with Windows 10, and Behringer Customer Service was unable to provide a solution for that.
Question: i used audacity to record my guitar going through this device unto my computer, however, the recording volume is too low, should i use a pre-amp to correct this problem
Answer: I do know that a pre-amp would help boost recording volume and add effects, but I'm interested to know why your volume is so low. I didn't use a pre-amp for recording with this device and had no problem with input volume. I use reaper and have little experience with audacity, so I don't know if you are already maxing out your volume or not in audacity. I would make sure that your input volume in the software you are using isn't too low before spending money on a pre-amp. The whole point I bought this device is so I didn't have to spend a lot of money on a pre-amp in the first place.
