9 best usb 3 audio interfaces
USB 3 audio interfaces are devices used in the realm of audio recording and production. These interfaces connect to a computer via a USB 3.0 (or later) port and serve as a bridge between analog audio signals (such as those from microphones or instruments) and digital audio signals that the computer can process. Here are some general features and aspects associated with USB 3 audio interfaces:
High Data Transfer Rates: USB 3.0 provides higher data transfer rates compared to its predecessor, USB 2.0. This higher bandwidth is beneficial for audio interfaces, allowing for more channels and higher-quality audio to be transmitted between the interface and the computer.
Low Latency: USB 3 interfaces are designed to minimize latency, ensuring that there's minimal delay between the input of an audio signal and its playback on the computer. Low latency is crucial, especially in real-time applications like recording and monitoring.
Multiple Inputs and Outputs: USB 3 audio interfaces come in various configurations with multiple inputs and outputs. This allows users to connect multiple microphones, instruments, and other audio sources simultaneously. The number of inputs and outputs depends on the specific model.
Compatibility: USB 3 audio interfaces are compatible with a range of digital audio workstations (DAWs) and operating systems. However, it's essential to check compatibility with your specific computer and software.
Sample Rate and Bit Depth: These interfaces support various sample rates and bit depths, determining the resolution and quality of the recorded audio. Higher sample rates and bit depths generally result in better audio quality.
Phantom Power: Many USB 3 audio interfaces provide phantom power, which is necessary for condenser microphones that require external power to operate.
Monitoring and Control Features: USB 3 audio interfaces often include headphone outputs for direct monitoring and controls for adjusting input levels, gain, and other settings.
Bus-Powered or External Power: Some USB 3 audio interfaces can be bus-powered, drawing power directly from the USB connection. Others may require an external power source.
When choosing a USB 3 audio interface, it's important to consider your specific recording needs, the number of inputs and outputs required, and the compatibility with your recording software and operating system.Additionally, reading user reviews and product specifications can provide insights into the performance and reliability of a particular audio interface model.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the headphone jack on this for monitoring your inputs, or does your PC audio come through it aswell |
Answer: | Hi, You can monitor your inputs and listen to playback from your computer simultaneously, which allows you to create overdubs with next to zero latency. You can either choose to monitor the inputs using the Direct Monitor switch, or you can use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW. If using the Direct Monitor feature the input signal will be passed directly to the line and headphone outputs, whereas if you use the Input Monitor feature in your DAW, you will be hearing the audio you're recording back from your DAW. In either case, you can still hear any other audio playing back from your DAW at the same time as recording. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | What type of usb cable does this come with? is it a type-c to type-c or a type-c to type-a |
Answer: | Hi, This comes with a type-c to type-a cable. If you have type-c ports, you will need to purchase a type-c to type-c USB cable separately. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
Question: | Does the XLR input only record audio to the left side |
Answer: | Hi, When recording a single microphone, you should ensure that you create a mono audio track in your DAW instead of a stereo audio track. When you record onto a mono audio track, the output from that track will be heard on both sides of your headphones or speakers (ensuring the output is set to stereo), however, if you record onto a stereo track, the audio will just be recorded onto the left side of a stereo file and you will ony hear it on the left of your headphones/speakers. This is explained in more detail here: https://support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/206849779?flash_digest=62885ef974b4eb116f3b3ea2c9b9c38ddb871473 Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this interface compatible with logic 10 as DAW |
Answer: | If you meant, Logic Pro X, this Tascam interface works great. Just as long as the Tascam is powered on before you open Logic it will immediately be recognized and you can be recording within seconds at input defaults or configure as you please. No drivers need on Mac: plug 'n play. Thus far I've used it under OS 10.9 to 10.12.6 with perfect compatibility with Logic Pro X. |
Question: | Can this be used to play four separate audio files simultaneously, outputting to eight channels |
Answer: | Yes it can! You'll have to load your 4 files (or 8 mono files, or even more if you want to mix 2 or more together) into a DAW like Reaper and then assign them to one (or more) if the 8 outputs. |
Question: | I only see 10 line outputs, but it says 20. What am i missing here |
Answer: | There are also 8 adat outputs via optical cable and 2 digital outs via a single digital coax cable. These, in addition to the 10 analog line outs you mentioned add up to 20. The same configuration works in reverse for inputs. |
Question: | Can you record with 2 mics simultaneously? Some review article claims that because of the two outputs, you can't multi-mic record |
Answer: | Yes, there are 2 inputs which can be used at the same time. The tascam settings panel has a setting to either make them 1 stereo input or 2 separate mono inputs. |

US-20x20
TASCAM’s Celesonic US-20x20 packs 20 channels of analog and digital I/O into a single rackspace with great sounding preamps and USB 3.0/2.0 connectivity. Eight Ultra-HDDA microphone preamps provide 56dB of gain and high headroom to make microphones sound their best. Up to ten channels of digital I/O are included on ADAT and S/PDIF connectors, with word clock also provided for use with external clocks like TASCAM’s CG-1000. MIDI I/O allows use with controllers and synthesizers, and sample rates up to 192kHz/24-bit are supported.
The TASCAM Celesonic US-20x20 is the first USB 3.0 interface to use class-compliant drivers for future-proof use with computers and tablets. A built-in DSP mixer includes parametric EQ and compression on every channel and a stereo reverb send for great-sounding monitor mixes. The DSP mixer can also be used as a live mixer or submixer with computer control. The US-20x20 has three operation modes – audio interface, digital mixer, and 8-channel digital mic preamp –for maximum flexibility.
Eight Ultra-HDDA Mic Preamps with 20dB of headroom
Ultra-HDDA (High Definition Discrete Architecture) mic preamps, an original TASCAM design, use discrete construction for superior audio quality. TASCAM has achieved an EIN rating of -125 dBu (EIN is a value measurement of the absence of noise). The preamps have over 20dB of headroom, well above competing interfaces. This headroom is especially helpful on high SPL sources like drums and guitars.
Direct Inputs for Guitar and Bass
Two instrument-level inputs are provided for direct input of guitar or bass. Make the most of guitar effect plug-ins, such as the TH2 effect that is included with Cakewalk SONAR.
[Note] Guitar effect plug-ins and DAW software are sold separately.
Angled design provides excellent usability on a desktop
The angled design of the US-20x20 makes desktop viewing and operation much easier than a flat box on a table. No more stretching the neck or twisting the wrist to operate an interface.
3 switchable modes - Interface, Mic Preamp and Mixer
The versatile Celesonic US-20x20 is an Interface for multitrack recording using a personal computer and DAW, a standalone mic preamp, or a mixer for live performances or mixing keyboards.
Camp Jam Rocks Out with TASCAM US-20x20
Musicians who grew up before Camp Jam came along can only wish we had been luckier. Available as a five-day summer day camp and as a six-day overnight camp, Camp Jam gives kids and teens the chance to learn from and perform with professional musicians. The curriculum includes songwriting, instrumental instruction, playing in a band, studio production, and making a music video. More than 20,000 students have benefitted from Camp Jam in the past ten years.
TASCAM is a proud sponsor of Camp Jam, and the TASCAM US-20x20 audio/MIDI interface has become a key tool for the camp's recording and performance programs. "I love the TASCAM US-20x20," enthuses Camp Jam Vice President of Operations Steve Freeman. "Our program includes a recording and songwriting camp where the campers write a song together and record it using the US-20x20 as the recording interface. We like that the US-20x20 has built-in mixing and compression, and EQ on every channel, so we can create monitor mixes with processing, which is huge! And it's USB 3, which provides terrific performance."
Camp Jam's National Recording Director Charles Powell points to the US-20x20's flexibility as another major benefit. "The US-20x20 is the most versatile piece of gear I can imagine," Powell insists. "It has combo inputs on the front so we can plug in mics, guitars, or line-level signals from keyboards, which is super flexible. And with word clock and ADAT I/O, it can be integrated into a larger system."
Because of the ADAT I/O, Camp Jam uses the US-20x20 as an expansion module for concerts, in addition to its main role as a studio interface. "Every camp has a live concert on Fridays," explains Freeman. "We have a recording system set up but we often need more mic preamps. The US-20x20's ADAT I/O and Mic Preamp Mode let us quickly connect it to add eight more mic preamps. And it sounds great! TASCAM's Ultra-HDDA mic preamps are very clean."

User questions & answers
Question: | Are you able to monitor the output through the computer or do you need to have headphones plugged into the box itself |

Question: | does this work with fl studio |
Answer: | Yes, works well with FL Studio! No latency, after setting up drivers. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the software disk or downloads |
Answer: | The Software is downloads. ProTools first requires internet connection and has a small cloud coverage, they want you to buy more space. My ProTools sessions won’t open in ProTools first. I believe the AIR Instruments it comes with requires an Ilok dongle and Ilok account for activation. The HDH 40 Headphones are cheap made compared to the HDH 50s. The Mic is ok, the interface is nice made and nice looking. It’s worth the money Guitar Center still carries the only interface this one isn’t really circulated yet! |
Question: | Is it ever in stock? been waiting for a month now with it ordered an i keep getting a different arrival time.. is it worth the wait |
Answer: | Yes. I too received different delivery dates. It arrived as soon as it was in stock. It is worth the wait. |
Question: | will it still work if it connects from a usb c to a macbook that has usb c connection?, will it work the same with a usb c/usb c cable |
Answer: | It will you can even use adapters to change its connection to usb or thunderbolt |
Question: | Hi, can i use this with fl studio |
Answer: | Hi, M-Audio support here! Thanks for your question. I can confirm the AIR 192|4 interface in this package will be suitable as an audio interface for FL Studio! I hope this helps and If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us directly - [email protected] Thanks, Krishan |

32-bit/192 kHz audio resolution
The industry-leading converters deliver exceptional audio quality, thanks to a maximum sampling rate of 192 kHz with 32-bit resolution.
Class-A D-PRE mic preamps
The UR-C series features D-PRE preamps, offering stellar recording quality unmatched in this class of products.
Compatible with all major audio software
Our UR-Cs are compatible with all major audio software supporting the ASIO, Core Audio or WDM standard, providing a fully integrated, DSP-based monitoring setup wherever you are and with whichever DAW you use.
Monitor modes
The UR24C has two separate, switchable monitor modes: DAW and DJ. In DAW mode – used for producing music with a DAW, such as Cubase – you can adjust the balance of the signals coming from the DAW and from the UR24C’s inputs. In DJ mode – optimized for performances with DJ software or backing tracks – you can choose to either output the mono master sound to the right side of your headphones, with the mono cue sound to the left, or have both in stereo and mix the two.
Latency-free monitoring with DSP effects
With built-in DSPs, UR-C interfaces provide zero-latency monitoring with effects for every DAW, with straightforward control of all routings and settings.
Loopback function for streaming
The Loopback function of the UR-Cs offers an easy way of streaming performances live to the Internet. MIDI input and output
All UR-C audio interfaces are equipped with a MIDI I/O port to connect any MIDI device, making them extremely flexible for studio recording. Many studios and musicians still use MIDI input devices, classic sound modules, samplers and more as an integral part of their signature sound.
Cubase AI, Cubasis LE and dspMixFX included
Combining audio and MIDI recording, editing, mixing and scoring in a single, integrated software package, Cubase AI is the perfect entry into the world of computer-based music production.
UR-C’s seamless integration with iPad is enhanced by the inclusion of Cubasis LE, for creating professional music productions on your iPad.
dspMixFx provides zero-latency monitoring with effects for every DAW with straightforward control of all routings and settings.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is Reaper supported |
Answer: | Hello, Yes, you can use the Scarlett 18i8 (3rd Gen) with Reaper. Best regards, Jay Lilley // Focusrite Technical Support Engineer |
Question: | When connected to windows through usb, do the drivers let me see each xlr pair as its own device in windows sound settings? i don't plan to use a daw |
Answer: | Hello, Yes this is possible in Windows. To expose additional channels from your Scarlett interface to non-ASIO applications (e.g. Skype, Discord, Zoom, Audacity) first click the Focusrite Notifier icon in the taskbar, then click "Expose/Hide Windows Channels": Best Regards, Anthony // Focusrite Support |
Question: | How is the 18i20 3rd generation different from the 2nd generation model? What do these changes improve on? Why were these changes necessary |
Answer: | The biggest change is in the headroom. These preamps and converters are cleaner and offer more gain than the 2nd gen. These pres also come equipped with the "Air" mode which adds some high end to model the ISA preamp circuit. The 3rd gen 18i20 also has 16 ADAT I/O channels as opposed to the 2nd gen's 8 channels of ADAT. The removable ears also help with portability for the engineer who doesn't want to keep the interface in a rack. If this was helpful, please consider purchasing from us (pixelproaudio on Amazon). We can help with support after the sale as well. We have it in stock and ready to ship. - Pixel Pro Audio |
Question: | How is the 18i20 3rd generation different from the 2nd generation model? What do these changes improve on? Why were these changes necessary |
Answer: | Hi, There have been several improvements made to the 3rd generation range of interfaces. Firstly, all of the inputs on the 18i20 3rd gen feature Air mode, emulating the classic sound of our original transformer-based ISA preamps. Secondly, the 18i20 3rd gen now has the ability to switch between Main and Alternative speakers connected to it using a front panel button. Thirdly, we have added a built-in Talkback function (allowing the engineer to talk directly to the performer), a Loopback function (allowing audio from one application to be recorded into another without connecting cables), Dual ADAT ports for recording 16 channels of audio into the DAW at 96kHz, optical S/PDIF and removable rack ears. Lastly, the specifications of the preamps and conversion have been improved even further - for example, the dynamic range has been increased to 111dB and the gain range is now 56dB instead of 50dB on the 2nd generation. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it normal for every little touch of the mic or mic stand or wires or interface to be picked up loudly in the recording |
Answer: | Different mics pick up differently. |
Question: | Will this work on a macbook pro 2012 (non retina) on the thunderbolt 2 connector, using an apple usb-c -> thunderbolt2 adaptor and thunderbolt2 cable |
Answer: | It should but use the cable that's included |
Question: | Which of the Studio models, if any, can actually drive 250 ohm headphones? The 24c, sadly, did not |
Answer: | Not sure you are going to find a USB interface that will work those. Those are a very narrow use case style of headphones. I know that are marginally better for listening due to the damping effect. However, for recording and mixing a better choose would be a reference (flat EQ) design like the Sony MDRV6 headphones. |
Question: | Will this presonus iostation 24c 2x2 usb-c audio interface work with bandlab cakewalk daw |
Answer: | Yes. It uses standard usb drivers so if it works with your computer, it should work with any up to date software. |
