14 best audio recording interfaces
An audio recording interface, often referred to simply as an audio interface, is a crucial piece of equipment used in studio and computer-based audio recording setups. It serves as the bridge between analog audio signals (such as those from microphones and instruments) and digital audio data that can be processed and recorded on a computer. Here is what you need to know about audio recording interfaces:
Purpose:
- Audio interfaces are used to convert analog audio signals into digital format and vice versa. They allow musicians, producers, and recording engineers to capture, process, and edit audio on a computer.
Inputs and Outputs:
- Audio interfaces come with a variety of input and output options, including XLR and 1/4-inch TRS inputs for microphones and instruments.
- They also have outputs for connecting to studio monitors or headphones.
- The number and types of inputs and outputs can vary, with some interfaces offering just a few channels, while others provide many inputs and outputs for more extensive recording setups.
Connectivity:
- Audio interfaces connect to computers via USB, Thunderbolt, FireWire, or PCIe, depending on the model and compatibility with your computer.
- USB is the most common connection type and is widely supported.
Sample Rate and Bit Depth:
- Audio interfaces support various sample rates (e.g., 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 96 kHz) and bit depths (e.g., 16-bit, 24-bit, 32-bit).
- Higher sample rates and bit depths can provide better audio quality but also result in larger file sizes.
Preamps:
- Many audio interfaces include built-in microphone preamplifiers (preamps) for connecting microphones directly. These preamps amplify the weak microphone signals to line level.
Phantom Power:
- Some audio interfaces provide phantom power (usually +48V) for condenser microphones that require it to operate.
MIDI Connectivity:
- Some audio interfaces have MIDI inputs and outputs for connecting MIDI instruments and controllers.
Low Latency:
- Low latency is crucial for real-time monitoring while recording. High-quality audio interfaces are designed to minimize latency to ensure musicians can hear themselves without delay.
Software Compatibility:
- Audio interfaces often come bundled with recording software or are compatible with popular digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Ableton Live, and others.
Price Range:
- The cost of audio interfaces varies widely, with budget-friendly options suitable for beginners and high-end interfaces with advanced features for professional studios.
In summary, an audio recording interface is a vital tool for anyone involved in studio or computer-based audio recording. It enables the conversion of analog audio signals into digital data, providing musicians and producers with the means to record, edit, and produce high-quality audio on a computer. The choice of an audio interface depends on your specific recording needs and budget.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the software disk or downloads |
Answer: | The Software is downloads. ProTools first requires internet connection and has a small cloud coverage, they want you to buy more space. My ProTools sessions won’t open in ProTools first. I believe the AIR Instruments it comes with requires an Ilok dongle and Ilok account for activation. The HDH 40 Headphones are cheap made compared to the HDH 50s. The Mic is ok, the interface is nice made and nice looking. It’s worth the money Guitar Center still carries the only interface this one isn’t really circulated yet! |
Question: | Is it ever in stock? been waiting for a month now with it ordered an i keep getting a different arrival time.. is it worth the wait |
Answer: | Yes. I too received different delivery dates. It arrived as soon as it was in stock. It is worth the wait. |
Question: | will it still work if it connects from a usb c to a macbook that has usb c connection?, will it work the same with a usb c/usb c cable |
Answer: | It will you can even use adapters to change its connection to usb or thunderbolt |
Question: | Hi, can i use this with fl studio |
Answer: | Hi, M-Audio support here! Thanks for your question. I can confirm the AIR 192|4 interface in this package will be suitable as an audio interface for FL Studio! I hope this helps and If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us directly - [email protected] Thanks, Krishan |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it normal for every little touch of the mic or mic stand or wires or interface to be picked up loudly in the recording |
Answer: | Different mics pick up differently. |
Question: | Will this work on a macbook pro 2012 (non retina) on the thunderbolt 2 connector, using an apple usb-c -> thunderbolt2 adaptor and thunderbolt2 cable |
Answer: | It should but use the cable that's included |
Question: | Which of the Studio models, if any, can actually drive 250 ohm headphones? The 24c, sadly, did not |
Answer: | Not sure you are going to find a USB interface that will work those. Those are a very narrow use case style of headphones. I know that are marginally better for listening due to the damping effect. However, for recording and mixing a better choose would be a reference (flat EQ) design like the Sony MDRV6 headphones. |
Question: | Will this presonus iostation 24c 2x2 usb-c audio interface work with bandlab cakewalk daw |
Answer: | Yes. It uses standard usb drivers so if it works with your computer, it should work with any up to date software. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this bundle come with a microphone |
Answer: | Yes it does. And it's a great setup for the price. I recommend it. |
Question: | What’s the name of the Mic & is it just a basic mic or does it have a really good sound quality |
Answer: | This does not come with a microphone, at least it did not in mine. |
Question: | Can you record guitar |
Answer: | I haven't tried it but I'm pretty sure you could. |
Question: | Can someone please help me figure out how to use this mic? Idk what I’m doing |
Answer: | You have not described what problems that you are having. I don't use this microphone. However, condenser microphones normally require 48volt phantom power to drive them. These are usually supported by a mixer, with that feature. I use a presonus USB mixer, that has a button that I press/turn on. I also have a VoiceLive that I can set the microphone type. So, I have two options. I connect the mixer to my PC which is running Presonus StudioOne DAW software. However, I can connect the mixer to my amplifier as well. I don't normally use a condense mic with my Amp due to feedback. With my Amp I use a Shure dynamic microphone. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does the output jack in the front passthrough audio from your computer as well or does it only output the input signal for monitoring |
Answer: | Yes. It has phantom power. It will also work with any none phantom power condenser mic. |
Question: | Is there live monitoring? And can i turn it on and off |
Answer: | It gets 2-4 hours of battery life normally unless you use the 48db boost as when you are using unpowered professional mics. With that activated I would guess about 60-90 minutes. If you use that a lot you better plan on having spare batteries. Monitor your audio too as the last couple of minutes before it shuts off is not very useable. |
Question: | Do i need a pre amp for vocal mic? also i currently use pod by line 6. does this have something similar |
Answer: | Yes. The unit will be connected by usb, Or also as a standalone controller. Hope This Helps. |
Question: | Is the trs line input on the audio 1 balanced? I already have a mic pre amp and would like to bypass the amp. I don't want to degrade sound quality |
Answer: | yes there is, is programable |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is Reaper supported |
Answer: | Hello, Yes, you can use the Scarlett 18i8 (3rd Gen) with Reaper. Best regards, Jay Lilley // Focusrite Technical Support Engineer |
Question: | When connected to windows through usb, do the drivers let me see each xlr pair as its own device in windows sound settings? i don't plan to use a daw |
Answer: | Hello, Yes this is possible in Windows. To expose additional channels from your Scarlett interface to non-ASIO applications (e.g. Skype, Discord, Zoom, Audacity) first click the Focusrite Notifier icon in the taskbar, then click "Expose/Hide Windows Channels": Best Regards, Anthony // Focusrite Support |
Question: | How is the 18i20 3rd generation different from the 2nd generation model? What do these changes improve on? Why were these changes necessary |
Answer: | The biggest change is in the headroom. These preamps and converters are cleaner and offer more gain than the 2nd gen. These pres also come equipped with the "Air" mode which adds some high end to model the ISA preamp circuit. The 3rd gen 18i20 also has 16 ADAT I/O channels as opposed to the 2nd gen's 8 channels of ADAT. The removable ears also help with portability for the engineer who doesn't want to keep the interface in a rack. If this was helpful, please consider purchasing from us (pixelproaudio on Amazon). We can help with support after the sale as well. We have it in stock and ready to ship. - Pixel Pro Audio |
Question: | How is the 18i20 3rd generation different from the 2nd generation model? What do these changes improve on? Why were these changes necessary |
Answer: | Hi, There have been several improvements made to the 3rd generation range of interfaces. Firstly, all of the inputs on the 18i20 3rd gen feature Air mode, emulating the classic sound of our original transformer-based ISA preamps. Secondly, the 18i20 3rd gen now has the ability to switch between Main and Alternative speakers connected to it using a front panel button. Thirdly, we have added a built-in Talkback function (allowing the engineer to talk directly to the performer), a Loopback function (allowing audio from one application to be recorded into another without connecting cables), Dual ADAT ports for recording 16 channels of audio into the DAW at 96kHz, optical S/PDIF and removable rack ears. Lastly, the specifications of the preamps and conversion have been improved even further - for example, the dynamic range has been increased to 111dB and the gain range is now 56dB instead of 50dB on the 2nd generation. Best regards, Laurence Clarke // Focusrite Technical Support |
