| Answer: | The wooden shims vary. Most end at a weak 1/16 of an inch, some are feathered down to nothing. The composite shims are all the same, ending at about 1/16 of an inch thick. I bought two boxes of the all wood (pine) shims from Amazon. I bought a small bundle of the composite shims from a home improvement store in my area. I prefer the pine shims over the composite. I can glue them if i want to, and they're easy to work with. |

| Answer: | The pine wood shims are about 1/4 inch thick on the thick end, and taper over their length of about 9 inches to 1/32 inch, or less, many are tapered 1/4 inch to a feather edge. They are approximately 1 and 1/4 inch wide . Depending on how much of a 'gap' you need to fill to make the book case level, they should work well. The wood shims are easy to cut with a small hand saw; the thin end can be cut with a utility knife. You can also stack then, but if you need to do that, you should probably get a piece of wood that's not tapered to nearly fill the gap, and then use one shim on top of that to make the final leveling adjustment. If the amount needed is 1/4 of an inch or less, one shim will work, but two, one on top of the other with their thick and thin ends placed together so that they make a sliding adjustable piece piece of wood with parallel top and bottom will be more stable. There are a lot of shims in the box, with small variations on their thickness. Stacking them in the same thick, thin, thick, thin manner will give you more to fill wider gaps, but it would be safer and more stable to use a piece of wood that nearly fills the gap, and then use one or two shims to make the final leveling adjustment. The shims are very stable and do not appreciably shrink over time, as they are already dried to remove most of the moisture. |
